I tried out this book when I taught a course on performance management. This is a sound text for a practitioner willing to sift through the text to find answers to specific problems. (It's not a briefcase book, so it will take some work to find the answers.) It is also useful in that it provides multiple examples of forms and procedures that can serve as templates.

On the other hand, Grote has a palpable disdain for research that is evident in the very first chapter. He rarely cites other literature, academic or otherwise, and is even loathe to provide general references. In fact, his recommendations seem based entirely on his own experiences, which in many cases are consistent with the best practices suggested by research, but in some respects are oddly divergent. (He also not above pushing his own programs, such as his "discipline without punishment" system, which are are not as widely accepted as the text would lead a reader to believe.) Additionally, the quality of the writing varies WILDLY between chapters. Some are quite coherent and smooth, whereas others are an absolute mess for students to outline and follow.

In the future, I will probably recommend this book as a supplemental text, particularly for MBA students or undergraduates who intend to go straight into the workforce. I would not recommend it as a primary text, especially in an I/O Psychology setting or for PhD students.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for researchers, students.......2002-12-29

This book is the heavyweight of books on performance appraisal, in terms of size, price and detail. As such it's an excellent reference book for researchers, hr professionals, students and academics if their interest is the "traditional" way of doing appraisals.

On the other hand, it is not as practical for managers, due to its size and price. Or rather there are better choices. One other significant disadvantage of this book is that it is traditional, and lacks new ideas or approaches such as put forth by Deming, Scholtes and Coens.

Of course the manager who likes to read on these topics will also gain. It's just that these days it's hard to get anybody to read anything related to work that is this size.

5 out of 5 stars Take The Pain Out of The Appraisal Process!.......2007-04-05

Nothing is more vital to the success of an organization than the contribution of each of its employees, but managers are usually experts in fields other than human resources. "199 Pre-Written Employee Performance Appraisals" takes the pain out of the performance appraisal process. Stephanie Lyster and Anne Arthur have written a well-organized, easy to read book that will enable managers to provide performance appraisals that keep employees motivated and striving for defined goals and objectives that benefit both themselves and the organization. No longer do you have to worry about what you can or should say and how to say it. This book addresses every situation from problem employees to executive appraisals, telecommuting and seasonal employees. It even shows managers how to easily design new performance appraisal systems. Get this book and get back to business with improved morale, drive, productivity and communication. Don't make it a goal, make it a reality!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know to set up a performance review system.......2007-03-20

Lyster and Arther outline the entire process of how to start, use, and maintain a performance appraisal system for your employees. The book has specific, concrete examples of what to do, as well as what not to do. I found the section about potential errors that managers can make was especially useful, since I have made some of those errors in the past without realizing it. The book also comes with a CD that contains useful forms and checklists for the entire process. This CD alone is worth the price of the book.

If you are working for a company with an already established performance review system, this book will help you figure out how to deal within the system, make improvements to the system as needed, and ensure your employees are provided with quality reviews. It was also helpful for figuring out how to talk to under-performing employees.

This book is probably most useful to new companies or companies who don't already have an established system in place, since this will give you step-by-step instructions on what you need to do (including checklists and examples).

I recommend this book to anyone who is a manager (new or experienced), anyone in HR, or anyone starting their own performance appraisal system within their company.

5 out of 5 stars Both business reference libraries and company managers will want this........2007-02-09

Plenty of books include mention or discussion of the performance appraisal in surveys of managerial success; but how many offer examples of successful written performance appraisals - much less nearly two hundred examples? These pre-written employee appraisals provides reviews of all issues, from performance evaluation structures and legal ramifications to handling problem employees. Chapters survey all angles and provide managers with plenty of concrete references for building concrete performance appraisals. Both business reference libraries and company managers will want this.

5 out of 5 stars Good resource for any manager.......2007-01-04

This easy-to-use book is a good resource for any manager who needs to write or conduct employee performance appraisals. From defining the employee performance appraisal to detailing pros and cons, this book covers it all in clear, concise, easy-to-understand language. I especially liked the chapter on Special Circumstances Employee Performance Appraisals, which covers telecommuting employees, an ever-increasing portion of the workforce. The companion CD provides excellent templates that managers can adapt to fit their needs.

1 out of 5 stars This "idiot's guide" is aptly named.......2004-06-07

The premise of this book is that all managers are sadistic and power-hungry, that all employees are industrious peak performers hamstrung by their incompetent bosses, and that supervisors ought to simply wake up and realize this. Because of this simplistic attitude toward the subject matter, this guide truly is for idiots. A very naive approach to the topic, and probably written by authors who have had a lot more experience as consultants than as managers. Also the text is heavily laden with "really cool" marketing-type lingo. Hey, we already bought the book, okay! (Don't rub it in! ) A waste of time and money.

    Book Description

Roman public and private law regulated many aspects of life in Antiquity. The legal sources, statutes, juristic opinions, textbooks, documents and reports preserve a wealth of information that illuminates Roman society and economy. However, the use of this kind of evidence can be extremely difficult. With this volume, classicists, historians, and legal scholars propose various ways to integrate the legal evidence with other sources for ancient social and economic history.
Speculum Iuris examines the complex relationship between law and social practice from the particular angle of Roman legislation and jurisprudence as conditioned by or reacting to a specific social, economic, and political context. Using various strategies, the editors and contributors mine a huge body of texts to study attitudes and behaviors of the Roman upper class, whose social concerns are reflected in the development of legal rules.
A close reading of juristic opinions and Republican or imperial legislation allows the contributors to find rationales behind rules and decisions in order to explain practices and mentalities of the elite within a larger social context. This book demonstrates clearly that Roman law was not divorced from the realities of daily life, even if some jurists may have been working with purely hypothetical cases.
Speculum Iuris provides a multidisciplinary approach to the question of the interplay of legal and social forces in the Roman world. As such, it will be a helpful study for general classicists and ancient historians, as well as for legal historians, social historians, economic historians, sociologists, and cultural anthropologists.
Jean-Jacques Aubert is Professor of Latin Language and Literature, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Boudewijn Sirks is Professor of the History of Ancient Law, the History of European Private Law, and German Civil Law, Institute for the History of Law, Germany.

                  Book Description

This is a wide ranging and deeply learned examination of evolutionary developmental biology, and the foundations of life from the perspective of information theory. Hermeneutics was a method developed in the humanities to achieve understanding, in a given context, of texts, history, and artwork. In Readers of the Book of Life, the author shows that living beings are also hermeneutical interpreters of genetics texts saved in DNA; an interpretation based on the past experience of the cell (cell lineage, species), confronted with and incorporating present environmental clues. This approach stresses the history, not only of the digital record saved in the DNA, but also of the flesh - the cellular organization which has a direct time-continuity with the very origins of life. This book is aimed at reconciling two opposite approaches to life. The first strictly sticking to a belief that all phenomena observed in the realm of the living can be explained from laws of physics. The opposite stressing the importance of features characteristic for a given level of description. To bring both views into a common understanding, the first part gives a comparison of the two problem solving strategies. The second part surveys the development of 20th century biology, bringing to light branches that never became part of the research mainstream. The third section of the book reviews a large body of recent evidence that can be interpreted in favor of the hermeneutic arguments.

Lloyd seems like a good guy. He's got an average wife, two kids, $200,000 a year with perks, plus a nice dog named Steve. But what happens to Lloyd when he starts to climb the corporate ladder? Lloyd--What Happened : A Novel of Business is the story of the modern corporate workplace--its greed, politics, affairs, drugs, groveling cohorts, graphs, and dietary habits. Fortune magazine columnist Stanley Bing follows Lloyd month-by-month in his pursuit to reengineer his company and pull off one of the biggest deals ever (we're never quite sure what the deal is exactly).

Bing is at his best when describing Lloyd's many idiosyncrasies: what he buys when grocery shopping, his love of his dog Steve, his appraisal of various beers. For example: "There was Foster's lager, which was average beer but came in an enormous can, which was not something to be sneezed at. When one's wife said, 'How many beers have you had?' on the cusp of driving off to someplace social of an early evening, the honest Foster's husband could say 'One!' and not be criticized, even though that one beer was the equivalent of two gigantic tankards of lusty ale."

Lloyd includes a portfolio of full-color presentations chock full of business clip art that graphs everything from the "Number of Laughs Enjoyed in Lloyd's Corporation As a Function of Profit Growth" and "Suit Size As a Function of Income/Vodka Consumption" to an examination of "What Lloyd Eats" and a summary of Lloyd's travels in Germany. If you enjoyed Stanley Bing in Esquire and Fortune, then you'll find that Lloyd is a must read. Bing's good humor captures many of the follies of business life that most readers will recognize and appreciate. --Harry C. Edwards

                      Book Description

Celebrated columnist Stanley Bing is an anthropologist of corporate culture, a satirist of corporate greed, a comedian of the libido. In his remarkable first novel, Lloyd: What Happened, Bing gives us the last word on business in America.

Brazenly honest and wildly funny, Lloyd shows us one crucial year in the life of an upwardly mobile executive for whom pain and gain walk hand in hand. Lloyd is a pretty decent guy. He has an assortment of flaws. He's married, a little chunky, well into the mid-six
figures, which sounds great but means only that he has to work harder every day just to stay where he is. He can see through the corporate veil of stupidity and brutality when  he wants to, which is not very often. He loves his wife and children and, suddenly, a senior financial officer named Mona.

Reeling toward the millennium in the era of gross, global consolidation, the corporation is on the verge of launching the most audacious transaction in the history of capitalism. They call it Moby Deal, and Lloyd is put in charge of making it all happen, a mandate he receives early one morning through the miasma of a let-me-die-now hangover. The good news is that Lloyd is perfectly suited to the task: he looks okay in a suit, can drink or eat just about anything that's put in front of him, and has a strong value system that has never stopped him from accomplishing any assigned duty.

Can Lloyd achieve Productivity? Can he get lean without being mean? Can he inspire increasingly greater numbers of people to do more for less while he himself does less for more? Can he gain the world without losing his soul? Can he keep his hands off a valued and extremely attractive associate?

Lloyd: What Happened is brilliantly and comically annotated with color bar graphs, pie charts, diagrams, and illustrated flourishes. It is the iconographic equivalent of an illuminated manuscript for the modern world, with a story that will make readers laugh out loud and cringe with recognition of every character and situation. Bing is a master storyteller and has written what is sure to be a classic of our time.

                      1 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-06-09

The charts and illustrations were a riot but I just couldn't really get into the book, it was very hard to like the characters. If you enjoy Bing I strongly recomend "You Look Nice Today."

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2004-01-06

I wish there were more books as funny as this one. I can still quote a few passages from it, and it has been a few years since i last read it. Especially if you've been involved in any large corporation, you will especially appreciate the absurdities, but it's just an incredibly funny book. I used to read Stanly Bing in Esquire and I just love his writing. I wish there were more like this!!

                      5 out of 5 stars a darn good read..........2003-10-19

Lloyd: What Happened is quirky, funny, and totally satisfying. only a guy like stanley bing would be so audacious as to use pie charts and graphs to illustrate the ups/downs/curious fluccuations of a middle manager-type corporate guy trying to hold on to a marriage, his job, and a red-head named mona (although anyone married to a corporate middle manager might bristle at the thoughts of his/her partner leaping into the sack (much less licking the toes) of a co-worker the first time they're left alone in to conference room!)

still...Lloyd's strength lies in his inherent good character. he is flawed (aren't we all) and sometime weak, but overall, he's a good good guy just trying to do the best job he can, in spite of those who would have him fail/his job. i liked this novel so much...i read it TWICE!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great start, then big fizzle.......2002-07-25

Stanely Bing's "Lloyd, What Happened" starts with a great satirical send-up on corporate life, complete with accompanying PowerPoint slides. But once Lloyd and his wife start having affairs about half-way through, the book loses its energy and its heart, and careens towards a rather unbelievable, slightly unsatisfying ending.

But this book is worth reading for the delicious parodies and witty comments on the state of American and International business as the reader follows the exploits of Lloyd, middle-manager extradonaire, has he attempts to complete the Big Deal, that would cost thousands their jobs and Lloyd his soul (he thinks). The book is presented as a journal, detailing one-year of Lloyd's life, and while Lloyd's business dealings with a variety of people and cultures are laugh-out loud funny, the interpersonal (business-speak) relationships Lloyd has with his family and his girlfriend, fall rather flat.

However, if you are looking a highly comic read on all aspects of business then "Lloyd, What Happened" is for you. Its a quick 400 page read, since many pages are devoted to hilarious Powerpoint Graphs detailing Lloyd's life. Overall, this book is worth reading.

                      4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Strange...but a bad ending.......2000-03-17

Wonderful novel. Bing really captures the idea of corporate life (business friendships, appearing productive, meetings). It is dead on. The strange part of the book is that it is littered with these PowerPoint-esque charts and graphs that pertain (sometimes only tangentially) to the plot line. I have never seen anything like it before. It is marred however by a week and contrived ending (almost like he had to hurry up and get it to his publisher or something).
