A unique book... A collection of the best teambuilding-tools from the Pfeiffer-annuals. If you only should buy one book in your life about team activities... Choose this one!

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for HR consultants and general professionals.......2001-08-12

I found the book to be chockful of helpful information--particularly the checklists, personal evaluations, and learning games and tools. I also liked the step-by-step instructions on everything. Very well organized. Easy to find things--just want you're looking for to solve a key issue or use in a special training class.

5 out of 5 stars More Teambuilding Tools!.......2001-07-18

A terrific book of tools for trainers, consultants and facilitators. Edited by Elaine Biech, the contributors provide comprehensive and integrated teamwork activities to help you develop high-performing teams. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Practical and In-Depth.......2001-07-14

In my work as a training consultant, I get called on to do a lot of work in the area of team building. There are a lot of books on the market that offer games and exercises, but fall short on theory and in depth debriefing. Elaine's book does a tremendous job of doing al of the above. Not only is there a wealth of the practical, but Elaine has gone over and above the expectations of delivering in depth training for the trainer so that one's tool kit if filled with reserve information when conducting teambuilding. YEAH!! Elaine has a way of taking the best of herself and others to make it work for the least to the most experienced trainer in the field. I will use this new tool a lot in my upcoming seminars. I look forward to new books from Elaine...they are ALL on my bookshelf and I use them all regularily for research as well sa recommend them to others!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas for teams.......2001-07-11

This new offering from Pfeiffer/Elaine Biech allows trainers to learn from their peers - working professionals in the field of human resource development. The Ten Block Model clearly presents both a roadmap for new teams and a diagnostic tool for established teams that want to move to the next level. Each of the chapters offers training activities that focus on one of the ten blocks. The final chapter presents a series of team building tools that are practical, easy to use, and thought provoking. This book is the team building equivalent of a recroding star's top hits CD - it presents only the best, culled from a large selection of really good ideas from past Annual editions. A wise addition to your library - a book you'll turn to again and again!

        Book Description

This collection of essays brings together the author's work on th growth of administrative monarchy in Angevin England, concentrating upon the personnnel of royal government and especially upon the common law courts. It describes the institutions of the English common law during its formative period, including the growth of the jury and of the two central courts, Common Pleas at Westminster and the court following the king, later King's Bench. Another group of essays illustrate the justices' handling of cases coming before the law courts, examining please that touched the king's interest. After a discussion of the authorship of England's first great lawbook, Glanvill, other essays examine the justices, their level of literacy, the conflicts facing the clerics among them in hearing secular cases, and the hostility that they aroused as 'new men' in the king's service from conservative elements in society.

        Book Description

Here is a unique and fascinating reference book for every serious deep-sky observer! Entries for each of more than 500 deep-sky objects provide far more than the usual astronomical data - they also detail, in every case, the most interesting facts. Physical factors, astrophysical information, evolution, unusual features, the list is endless. The objects are all listed in NGC order, which were originally assigned in approximate order of location from west to east, convenient for reference because objects that can be seen on a given night will occur within a few pages of each other in the book. Astronomers can now get an insight into exactly what they are looking at, to add a new level of insight and enjoyment to deep-sky observing.

5 out of 5 stars A guide for the knowledgeable astronomer.......2005-02-08

At last. A Guide to telescopically observable deep-sky objects that also contains astrophysical information about each one all in one book.
This could replace hours of cross-referencing a variety of astronomical source books.
Especially handy for any owner of today's GoTo telescope, it is also useful for the starhopper, as it contains chart numbers for a couple popular star atlases likely to be used by amateur astronomers.
Other nearby objects are often only mentioned in the text for each object, so the book actually covers more than just 500 objects.
If I can fault the book at all, it is the lack of small-scale finder charts for some of the objects that are in crowded fields of objects. You will have to have charts of some sort to make sense of the fields in which these objects lie. Perhaps in a second edition.
There are many books for the amateur who wishes to expand beyond the basic 500 object lists, but there is a dearth of observing guides for the scientifically up-to-date amateur astronomer just expanding beyond the Messier list.
This is one, and I recommend it.

From the author: We have experimentally investigated the coupling between interfacial instabilities and mechanical interlocking in polymeric films consisting of the incompatible polymer pair of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene and the compatible polymer pair of linear low-density polyethylene/high-density polyethylene. Our experimental results show that mechanical interlocking between the two phases can be achieved by controlling the extent of interfacial instabilities by properly selecting the initial disturbance frequency and amplitude as well as the layer depth ratio. Additionally, it has been shown that strength enhancement of the interface due to mechanical interlocking is directly proportional to the extent of wave bending in the processing apparatus. In fact, it has been demonstrated that in our test geometry maximum strength enhancement can be achieved at dimensionless wavenumbers near unity that correspond to disturbances with the largest growth rates. Overall, it has been shown that mechanical interlocking induced by a controlled amount of interfacial instabilities (i.e., based on knowledge of the stability of the interface and growth/decay rate of interfacial waves) can significantly increase the interfacial strength of two layer polymeric structures consisting of incompatible and compatible polymer pairs. Moreover, this effect is more pronounced in incompatible polymer pairs that possess negligible interfacial strength in absence of mechanical interlocking.

            Book Description

Acknowledging that Darwinian biology has considerably deepened our understanding of life, John Haught argues that we should dig even deeper than Darwin - and that religious belief helps us do so.

In his acclaimed book God After Darwin, John Haught argued that religious belief is wholly compatible with evolutionary biology. Now, in Deeper Than Darwin, he advances his argument further by saying that religious belief is even more revealing about life than Darwinism.

Haught looks hard at the question of how, after Darwin, religions may plausibly claim to be bearers of truth and not just of meaning and adaptive consolation. While he assumes the fundamental correctness of evolutionary biology, he firmly rejects the non-scientific belief that evolutionary biology amounts to an adequate explanation of living phenomena. Even though Darwinism is illuminating, Haught argues, it by no means tells us everything we need to know about life, even in principle. To find the deepest, though certainly not the clearest, understandings of life and the universe, we may still profitably consult the religions of the world. Deeper Than Darwin takes up where God After Darwin left off, arguing that Darwin's vision is important and essentially correct but that we can still dig deeper in our understanding of what is going on in the life-story.

4 out of 5 stars Easy there, Big Fella. Hold your horses .......2006-06-07

John Haught rejects at length the very points that a top 500 reviewer accredits to Haught. This critic's careless reading is the cause of the supposed contradictions. Haught has published extensively in his academic career at the University of Georgetown, so there should be no mistaking the thrust and context in which this book is written.

1 out of 5 stars Deeper than Darwin or More Baffling than Behe?.......2006-03-10

John Haught's concern, in his book "Deeper than Darwin" to convince us that science and religion cannot only co-exist, but can co-exist without relegating either the former or the latter to second chair.

He tries to explain this by arguing that the two may well simply be interpretations of the world 'on different levels.' To show how 'different levels' of interpretation are possible, he resorts to metaphor. Just like social issues can be explained in terms of psychology, economics, politics, biology, etc. (each interpretation being right on its own level of explanation) he agues that science and religion can also do this.

But this is where Haught's coherence ends. Nowhere does he give much of an explanation as to what the "deeper" level that religion supposedly gets to. Nowehere does he address the question of how, as the Bible (and other holy books) make historical predictions that can be checked by science (many already disproven), the two are not at odds.

What's more, Haught gives no reason to suppose that religion occupying a "deeper" realm than science is anything short of the kind of Gouldian "non-overlapping mysteria" he writes so sternly against! If he means something different, he never made it explicit in the book. We are constantly left guessing what "deeper" might actually mean.

Lastly, Haught seems to resort a decent amount to the "god of the gaps" idea that he, again, rails so much agianst in the Intelligent Design movement. Science hasn't explained x, he exclaims, and might not be able to. Therefore, religion should supplant science here. But that is EXACTLY what ID is.

In brief, this book needs to be rethought. The ideas need to be presented more explicitly (rather than every paragraph seeming to be a rehash of the one that came before). Haught never quite gets to the point and (maybe) because of that, fails to offer anything convincing; his only offer is poetic prose.

2 out of 5 stars big title - little delivery.......2004-06-18

Mr. Haught's book initially raises great expectations for the reader due to his supposed familiarity with his subject material. But IMHO nothing was delivered. He seems skilled in introduction and critical appraisals. But he has nothing tangible to offer except vacuous prose. I would say the book is worth reading for those interested in what an opposing view to Dawkins or Dennett might entail. In my mind one of Daniel Dennett's footnotes from Darwin's Dangerous Idea nicely sums up such an attempt to offer an alternative view to real darwinism in a criticism of Paul Tillich's theological approach as "bombastic redescription."

4 out of 5 stars FLAWED BUT AMAZINGLY INTERESTING.......2003-08-31

This is one of the most annoyingly schizophrenic books I have ever read.

The author launches off into many wonderful attacks against literalism then employs literalism himself! The author points out the problems of metaphysics and especially the problems we encounter when we are not able to put off "metaphysical gratification" then lapses into his own brand of feeble metaphysics, the idea that there is "in fact" inexhaustible "depth" to the universe or that the Cosmos is "narrative to the core."

I believe the author gets pulled off course because his personal agenda requires conclusions that his arguments do not allow him to reach, so he leaps. In fact, to some extent this book is a fascinating record of a learned mind veering away from its own awesome conclusions. I do not use the word "awesome" lightly. Indeed, I think the book's strengths far, far outweigh its weaknesses. The attacks on literalism and metaphysics (though undercut) are highly inspirational and informative, the straining toward a new view of religion essential, the attack on scientific literalism necessary.

This book does not heal the rift between science and religion as much as it shows the width and depth of a chasm that continues to open. With all its flaws, "Deeper Than Darwin" is an engrossing and important book that should be read and reread by anyone interested in religion, science or philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars God survives Darwinism.......2003-05-20

John Haught has no problem reconciling his religious beliefs with evolution. He argues that evolution, and all science, only goes so deep in explaining the world. He points out his objection to scientists, such as Dawkins, using evolution as a weapon to promote their own atheistic beliefs. He sees this as science overstepping it's bounds and becoming a religion of it's own. I am an evolutionist, butI agree with him here.

He also takes strict creationists and "intelligent designers" to task for trying to recast their religious beliefs as science. The "God of the Gaps" approach of taking anything currently under debate in the scientific community as evidence of evolution being wrong, and therefore creationism or intelligent design being right, ultimately will backfire as science progresses to fill in the gaps. He sees this as poor reasoning, since science isn't done yet.

But Haught goes on to say that untimately science cannot provide the final answers or final truth, and this is where religion can step in and reach deeper. I agree with this; science can only explain so much and religion has plenty to explain after that.

All in all, a very positive book that presents a "middle way" in the current evo-creation debate. Science and religion are compatible if the two side will recognize where science ends and religion begins.
