Accounting for Corporate Reputation
Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui , and Ellen L. Pavlik Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899307175 |
Book Description
This unique book examines conceptual, empirical, and practical issues associated with corporate reputation. Emphasizing the importance of the roles of corporate social disclosure and organizational effectiveness, the authors emphasize the need for an integrative framework in explaining the nature of corporate reputation. Utilizing valuable data provided by Fortune magazine, the book provides both a historical evaluation of reputational rankings of Fortune 500 firms for the period 1987-1991 and insights as to the market reaction to disclosure of these rankings. These can be utilized by firms in building reputation, investors in evaluating their strategies, and public policy officials in dealing with corporations. Following an extensive review of the conceptual foundations of corporate reputation, namely corporate social performance and disclosure and organizational effectiveness, the authors present explanatory and predictive models of corporate reputation. They then examine the potential relationship between corporate reputation and shareholders' wealth--the market reaction to reputation signals. Their findings suggest that a firm's benefit from the disclosure of reputation signals will depend on size and expectations, and that such disclosure appears to lead to a significant, lagged market reaction. Based on a detailed analysis of the 1987-1991 performance of U.S. firms on eight key attributes of reputation, the authors conclude with insights that can be utilized by corporations and investors alike.

The Role of Corporate Reputation for Multinational Firms: Accounting, Organizational, and Market Considerations
Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567204082 |
Book Description
Among many factors contributing to a corporation's success, none is more crucial than reputation. It affects the way management makes decisions and the positions it takes, and how it takes them, on critical issues. A good reputation is also a signal to the market--one way that stakeholders will know that a corporation is successful. Riahi-Belkaoui looks at the most crucial functions and influences that determine corporate reputation, among them, the way it affects a firm's market value; the quality of its disclosures; how well its earnings are managed, how its executives are compensated. He also addresses other processes, such as international production, the informativeness of earnings, accounting choices, and the characteristics of earnings forecasts. The result is a succinct, readable, probing study for corporate decision makers in various functions of the firm, their academic colleagues, and knowledgeable onlookers who need ways to evaluate and buttress their investment decisions. Riahi-Belkaoui examines the process of reputation-building first, then the role of corporate reputation and how market value and accounting value differ. He moves to the impact of contextual factors of multinationality and corporate reputation on accrual and cash flow valuation models. In Chapter Four he shows how corporate audiences construct the reputations of firms by interpreting information signals about the firms from various monitors. He then reports the result of an empirical study of the 100 most international firms, which supports the general hypothesis that corporate audiences construct reputations on the basis of information and firms' earnings management. In Chapter Six he turns to the relationship between the level of corporate reputation and managers' ccounting choices, and in Chapter Seven examines the value relevance of earnings, cash flows, multinationality, and corporate reputation. Chapter Eight advances the hypothesis that corporate boards control top management behavior by means of compensation, but also by judging them on organizational effectiveness and social performance. He restates a general model of international production, and in Chapter 10, hypothesizes that the level of corporate reputation affects both the informativeness of earnings and the magnitude of discretionary accounting accrual adjustments. He ends the book by providing empirical evidence of the relationship between economic performance and organizational effectiveness, a measure of overall social performance.

Omphalos--A Meditation on the Concept of Creation ex nihilo.......2000-04-29
Every living thing in the world, he begins to prove, is part of an interconnected temporal system, and has a four-dimensional nature that goes to its very core. Nature cannot be created ex nihilo without creating time ex nihilo and nature's whole process "in medias res", so to speak.
This is where Gosse's meditation has been so misunderstood. His argument is that IF the world has been created out of nothing by an act of creative power, AND that event happened recently as his fellow churchmen were fond of claiming, THEN there could be no physical evidence of the point at which that creation took place. To put it crudely, the world is by nature a spinning top, and if it has been created at all, it has been created spinning, and there will be no finger-marks on it, no scars of a sudden acceleration.
Gosse's thoughts were directed at the believers of his time, and were not intended to convert skeptics. It is sad that his prejudice against Darwin and the evolutionists (which he shared with most people of his day, believing and non-believing) has been held against him.
The next step for a 21st century person of belief is to think beyond Gosse about the Big Bang.

Product Description
This is a ARMY WAR COLL STRATEGIC STUDIES INST CARLISLE BARRACKS PA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A950793. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Lieutenant Colonel Dallas Owens analyzes current integration programs and initiatives and evaluates them for their potential to resist transformation s possible threat to AC/RC integration. In Part I, Lieutenant Colonel Owens examines historical and current concepts of integration. He shows how programs emerged from the concept, the barriers to integration that they attempt to address, and their success. In Part II, he looks into the future of AC/RC integration, starting with an overview of transformation, then discussing transformation s impacts on the Reserve Components and their integration with the active force. Finally, he provides conclusions about the current and future state of AC/RC integration and offers recommendations to overcome transformation s challenges to integration. Maintaining an integrated force during transformational turbulence is imperative if the Army is to retain its ability to support the National Military Strategy. ....... The concept of "Total Forces Policy" is widely attributed to Defense Secretary Melvin Laird, who in 1970 directed that a Total Force be considered when planning, programming, manning, and equipping Defense Department forces. It was designed to meet Cold War requirements to fight a European war between huge mechanized militaries. Ten years ago a total force policy remained important, but proved inadequate to meet the need for increased use of the reserve components (RC) in response to challenges posed by a smaller military, more diverse missions, and more frequent deployments.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A662423. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research evaluated the affects of perturbations in time phased force deployment data (TPFDD) on airlift system performance. Four characteristics of two TPFDD files were perturbed according to a 2(4-1) fractional factorial experimental design and then fed into the Airlift Flow Module (AFM) simulation. Specifically, small, constrained perturbations were made to the specified locations, the timeline, the amounts of cargo and passengers, and the proportion of outsize and oversize cargo categories. The effects these perturbations had on AFM output were interpreted using factor analysis. The computed factor scores, when plotted against one another, provided sensitivity plots, graphically depicting the sensitivity of the airlift performance response to the perturbations. Counter to recent airlift analysis discussions which promote completely unconstrained random TPFDD generation, this research indicated that small, constrained variations could cause potentially significant and unpredictable changes in airlift performance. of potential interest to the simulation community, another by-product of this research was the potential to use factor analysis as a verification and validation tool for large, complex simulation models.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A686724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A need exists within the U.S. submarine force to employ an operational schedule that provides more sleep and that is in better alignment with human circadian rhythms, thus improving cognitive effectiveness. This study compares an experimental watchstanding schedule derived at Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) with the schedule currently used onboard the submarine USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN 730 GOLD). As part of the final stage of a larger effort, it is designed to determine if the new watchstanding schedule can significantly improve circadian physiology performance and submariner perceptions of their ability to perform their jobs while on board operational submarines. NSMRL's three-part project was designed to study the following: (1) approximately 350 surveys that assessed sleep quality and fatigue on active duty submariners, (2) a laboratory analysis of three separate and distinct watchstanding schedules on submariner physiology and performance, and (3) at-sea trials in support of laboratory findings. The study reviews pertinent literature on sleep deprivation and shift work to emphasize important concepts needed to make schedule comparisons. Results of this study demonstrate that there were no significant improvements in either cognitive effectiveness or daily sleep while on the new schedule. Also, a majority of the crew members did not like the new schedule, which attempted to compress watch periods together to widen periods for contiguous sleep. These results, taken together, demonstrate that the new schedule is not compatible with an operational submarine environment.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A881924. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The anticipated ability of the Future Force to See First requires proactive research to transform the emerging concepts of embedded training and networked sensors into assets. This report documents initial research on an innovative training program to provide small unit commanders the tactical and technical skills needed to exploit networked sensors to meet the See First objective. The research addressed three areas: design of a prototype embedded training program on networked sensors, design of a subset of training exercises for the training program, and development of those exercises in a prototype command and control (C2) system compatible with virtual simulation. Design and development stressed a structured training approach with progressive simulation- based exercises. A representative subset of 20 exercises were developed that focused on exploiting an array of networked sensors on unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) to support the commander's critical information requirements. Results provide lessons learned on technology dependent training that will be used to refine and extend the prototype training on employing networked sensors, and that may apply to the Army's ongoing effort to develop embedded training for the Future Force.

Bidding for Contract Games Applying Game Theory to Analyze First Price Sealed Bid Auctions

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A376133. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study analyzed the first price sealed bid auction (FPSBA) using computer simulations. The first price sealed bid auction is a static Bayesian game with incomplete information. These games have a well defined symmetric Bayesian Nash equilibrium. The existence of the equilibrium makes it possible to find the bidders' equilibrium strategies. The equilibrium strategy maximizes the bidders' profit. This thesis assumes, (1) the bidders act rationally and have private information about their production cost, (2) the bidders' preferences and information are symmetric, (3) the buyer is committed not to deviate from the auction rules, even if a deviation would be profitable. Considering these assumptions and the equilibrium strategy, this Thesis constructed a FPSBA model. The model was transformed into an algorithm and coded in Visual Basic language. The code was used to simulate the FPSBA in different scenarios. The simulation showed the bidders' behavior and identified factors affecting the bidders' decision during bid preparation. Critical factors include the cost distribution and number of bidders. The concluding chapter presents the analytical results.

A Comparison of Computational Cognitive Models: Agent-Based Systems Versus Rule-Based Architectures
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423502930 |

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA MODELING VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND SIMULATION report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A681514. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Increased operational costs and reductions in force size are two of the major factors driving the need for improved computer simulations within the military community. Human performance models are used in various aspects of simulation, including the control of computer-generated forces, as tactical decision aides, in intelligent tutoring systems, and in new system design. This research compares two categories of human performance models: multi-agent systems and rule-based architectures. Each model has its own strengths and weaknesses and is best suited for certain applications. Complex military simulations need human performance models that take advantage of the strengths of more than one type of model. This study compares the implementation and performance of these two models, and demonstrates the need for hybrid systems that employ the best aspects of each for a given situation. The thesis is organized as follows: Chapter II discusses the background of naturalistic decision making and provides overviews of the following computational cognitive architectures: Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R); Soar; COGnition as a NEtwork of Tasks (COGNET); Java Expert System Shell (JESS); Operator Model ARchitecture (OMAR); Micro Saint; Neural Networks; and Agent-Based Systems. In Chapter III, the two models are applied to the decision making problems of the Officer of the Deck onboard a submarine as he maneuvers the vessel to carry out the assigned mission.

Comparison of Performance Measures in the Virtual Environment and Real World Land Navigation Tasks
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423533283 |
The Storming Media report number is A396483. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Spatial knowledge acquisition is an integral part of navigation related studies. With the improvement of technology, the researchers gained the capability of testing the spatial ability in a virtual world as well. However, little research has been conducted to understand whether VE performance can predict Real World performance or not and amongst the measures used what measures are most predictive. This thesis research addresses the validity of performance measures used in virtual and real environments. Ten subjects have participated in two experiments. The first experiment was a navigation task in a building type virtual environment. With some modifications, Herman Hall model was used for this experiment. The second experiment was a navigation task in a real building. For this experiment Middle East school in DLI was used. Measures of landmark, survey and route knowledge were taken for each participant. The results did not suggest a correlation in overall performance measures. However a correlation is observed in the performance for the landmark knowledge. The acquisition of survey knowledge by time is also seen in the results of the study.
