Book Description
`This book is a good comprehensive text and comes highly recommended to anyone currently involved in, looking to get involved in, or just interested in environmental management, environmental accounting and reporting' -
Pacific Accounting Review
This is the long-awaited 2nd edition of the benchmark publication that helped shape the developing agenda of environmental accounting. This excellent new edition provides an overview of the subject ranging from environmental management to sustainability, and integrates the major advancements that have occurred since the first edition - in both research and practice. It introduces and explains environmental issues as they relate to accountants today.
This new work also places an increased emphasis on the emerging research literature in the field and reveals a consciousness of the difficulties of developing an environmental agenda in business. It makes an excellent stand-alone text for lower level students, a firm base from which the advanced student or researcher can explore research and more complex issues, and a useful guide for practitioners seeking to understand and implement environmental practice.

Book Description
This centenary volume of essays explores a number of related themes which differentiate and characterize the approach of the LSE. Central to this, is the assumption that law is one of the social sciences and that law should be studied "in context" as a social phenomenon. The contributors have been chosen both for their distinction and for their connection with the LSE, and include such eminent figures as Mrs Justice Arden, Judge Rosalyn Higgins, Sir Stephen Sedley, and Roberto Mangabeira Unger. The essays focus on three main subject areas: Law and Economy; Dimensions of Law; and Courts and Process which are discussed against the broader canvas of the School's approach to Law . Thus, Comaroff, Cohen, Unger and Teubner adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, stressing both legal and social theory, while the contributions of Cranston, Cornish and others stress an internationalist approach. A characteristic LSE focus on the dynamic nature of law runs through the work of Collins, Higgins and Lord Wedderburn, while a reformist tradition (allied with concern for the practical) is explored alongside the introduction of new legal subjects into the curriculum. Fascinating and thought provoking, this volume is an accesible summary of current thought and debate presented by today's leading scholars and practioners. Law, Society and Economy will be of enduring interest to scholars and practioners worldwide, akin to Ginsberg's celebrated and widely cited volume of essays which marked the School's fiftieth anniversary.

Customer Reviews:
Great text for an introductory class or interested amateur.......2006-06-08
"Voyages to the Stars and Galaxies" by Fraknoi, Morrison, and Wolff is one of the best introductory astronomy books I have come across. The book is marketed as a textbook for a (non-science major) college course, and as such it works great. But I also think the book would be ideal for anyone who is interested in astronomy, and wants something more substantial than what is offered in most popular astronomy books, but who also does not have the math background (or the time or inclination) for a math intensive textbook. In fact, even if you are interested in a more math intensive book, if you are new to astronomy, this might be a better starting point from which you can branch out later. The reason I say this is because the book gives such an excellent overview of astronomy, while providing very clear explanations of the underlying scientific principles. Thus you walk away from the book seeing the big picture and having a good grasp of the science behind it all. You have an excellent foundation from which to delve into more math intensive books if you so desire.
For example, consider the life of a star. A popular astronomy text will generally give you a nice description of the various stages in a star's life. Interesting, but just not enough meat for some people. A university level textbook will give you all the meat you want, but it may be difficult to see the forest through the trees so to speak. Voyages, on the other hand, gives you the descriptive overview, AND explains the scientific principles behind each stage, all without losing you in lots of math. It is a good balance.
Not that this book has no math in it. There is some, but it is generally minimal, or presented in side bars or additional problems that you can explore.
I've read other introductory astronomy texts, and none have been as consistently clear while striking the right balance for a first year college student or interested amateur.

An eclectic linking of the micro- and the macro-universe.......1998-06-19
Unequalled for friendliness of tone and accessibility, a personable survey of the microscopic and macroscopic phenomena of the universe. Some of the science is slightly out of date (it was written in 1967) but if you want a thought-provoking introduction to the current views of the physical universe, this is it. I read my copy over and over, and it always gives me new insights in the way Murchie combines ideas that have not been combined before. With excellent illustrations by the author, and the author's own index, which is a deep work of art in itself.

Book Description
"Nigel Barber's KINDNESS IN A CRUEL WORLD provides a well-written, accessible, and much-welcomed discussion of moral beliefs and moral behavior from an evolutionary perspective. The insightful discussion of kindness and cruelty will stimulate debate, and provide an excellent introduction to these issues for the nonspecialist and an excellent review for students of evolutionary thinking. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in human morality." DAVID C. GEARY, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychological Sciences, University of Missouri, Columbia
"Although altruistic and self-sacrificial behavior have been considered puzzling by psychologists and biologists looking for individual benefit in the acts, such behavior is perfectly consistent with current theories of evolution. Nigel Barber's fascinating book KINDNESS IN A CRUEL WORLD takes the reader on a guided tour of current research on the diverse ways in which altruistic motives shape both human and animal behavior. Written in a style that is accessible to the lay public, Barber's book will also be stimulating to professionals for its thoughtful integration of diverse findings and its provocative speculations." MICHAEL R. CUNNINGHAM, Psychologist; Professor of Communication, University of Louisville; Past President, International Network on Personal Relationships
"Nigel Barber provides a most memorable explanation of kindness and its ultimate origins. From birds and bees to bats in trees, this book reviews the classic theories and examples of prosociality in the natural world. Most important, it serves as a primer for human sharing and caring. From nuns and priests to guns and cheats, evolutionary explanations of human sociality provide the best chance for creating a world in which we all thrive at being alive." DAVID P. SCHMITT, Associate Professor of Psychology at Bradley University; Founding Director of the International Sexuality Description Project
"This is a well-written, highly informed discussion of the fundamental problem in evolutionary studies of humans-altruism and the delicate balance between self-interest and the demands of groups. It should attract a wide audience of professional and nonprofessional readers alike." KEVIN MACDONALD, Department of Psychology, California State University, Long Beach.
Customer Reviews:
Behaviorism.......2006-05-21
A disappointment. It's about behaviorism and how it tries to make sense of altruism.
I don't think I like behaviorism very much. Behaviorists study animals by way of painful experiments, and they believe that all emotions and actions of animals and humans are just these machine-like motivations for an end that benefits themselves and their species. We're all supposed to be cold selfish robots, and even love is just this glandular activity that exists for cold selfish robot reasons. It has a way of sucking all the joy out of how you view nature; not because it tries to supply answers, but because it's so ugly in the way that it does it.
The book says that behaviorists are all puzzled by altruism that benefits other species than that of the altruist (whether the altruist is an insect, dolphin, or human) since it goes against their whole philosophy, so the book admits, and so it tries to explore this very puzzling terrain by way of colorful descriptions of experiments that I don't even want to think about.
I admit that my review is partially a complaint about behaviorism, not the book itself. However, since the book's exterior didn't make clear that it was exclusively about behaviorism, and the cynical tone in which the text was written, I need to make it clear in this review.
If you're okay with behaviorism, you'll probably be okay with this book.
If you're not okay with behaviorism, and you're actually looking for a feel-good read about altruism, read the book Ordinary Grace instead.

Book Description
Comprehensive, clearly presented work considers such subjects as quantization of the electron-positron field, response to an external field, quantization of free field, quantum electrodynamics, interacting fields, Heisenberg representation, the S-matrix, and Feynman's approach to quantum electrodynamics. An excellent resource for individuals as well as libraries and other institutions.
Customer Reviews:
A master teaches the basics of quantum field theory.......2002-01-15
These are notes taken from the Pauli lectures on field quantization at Zurich, where he taught for many years. They are magnificent in their clarity and succint as only Pauli could be. Basically they explain how to quantize the basic free fields and introduce in a beautiful way the Dyson method of introducing (perturbative) interactions, renormalization comprised. Fine points, like the Gupta-Bleuler method, get a critical and clear treatment. The language is surprisingly modern, with emphasis in vacuum expectation values, kernels, etc. The last chapter treats the Feynman method of path integrals. This must have been one of the very first published reviews of this method: it is done, of course, quite originally. One should read every scrap of paper left by Pauli, a deep and original thinker who expressed himself with unsurpassed clarity, let alone this lovingly produced book.

Twelve year-old Jet tells anyone who will listen that they've got to face life's frustrations. His older brother violently disagrees. His father firmly believes that chaos breeds chaos and order begets order, and is living disproof of the theorem. Meanwhile his mother is in the throes of the fourteenth of what will ultimately be seventeen religious sects she will belong to, fervently rehearsing the art of speaking in tongues in front of the mirror.
Life is eccentrically calm until Jet launches a series of Zen-like break-ins. Only the display materials are stolen from Cordin's Jewelers. The grocery bags are missing from the Food House. The Penultimate National Bank opens with no deposit slips. By the time the media, particularly the Weekly World Scene, grab hold of it the town is in an uproar. Then the Quite Reverend John Joseph Matthew Paul III pitches his orange and blue striped tent in the parking lot of the now-closed Two Guys store and holds a revival meeting which changes everyone's life. Including his own.

Mad Dog captures a wonderful mix of humor, reality and solid storytelling in Skywriting at Night. Mad Dog's years as a humor columnist did not force this novel into an episodic no-plot piece of garbage as all too often happens with modern media artists. Instead you find this compelling work that makes you think about everything, the meaning of the title, your life and how good it feels to read and reread a good book. He's an artful writer, easily bringing characters to life. I reccommend this book to everyone from the avid reader to the casual Sunday skimmer. I personally guarantee that you will not be able to put this book down until you've finished turning the last page.
Finally in print!.......2000-07-09
A friend read this at a website and turned m e onto it. I bought one of the first copies, then bought two more to give to friends. That's the highest recommendation I can give ANY book!
I'm so glad it's in print!.......2000-07-07
I read this book at Mad Dog's web site and I have to admit, I never thought I'd read a whole book on a computer but I did! It was completely absorbing, fun, and my husband kept asking me what I was laughing at so I had to read parts to him. I'm just glad it's in print so hopefully more people will get to find out how wonderful this book is.
Now that I have plugged it, can I get your autograph, M.D.?.......2000-06-10
I stumbled across Mad Dog quite by accident while learning howto use the Internet in school... I haven't laughed this hard in QUITEa while! I will probably get this hard copy for myself when I get my post graduate job.
Mad Dog is consistently funny. ( ) He is a columnist in the Art Buchwald tradition, with his skewed view of life. A funny, funny guy! END
A Pure Delight.......2000-06-02
If you want to have some great offbeat fun, this is the book for you. A very different plot, very different characters, and a fast-paced style make "Skywriting" hard to put down. I couldn't wait to see what Jet would do next -- what trouble he would get himself, his friends and the town into -- and looked forward to the laughs and smiles on my face as the story progressed. I hope to see a follow-up with even more zany antics. For the open-minded reader, "Skywriting" is a winner!
