Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Covers the "business side" of consulting quite well.......2007-01-09

This book is great for learning about how to run your consulting business. It's assumed that you already know about to do the consulting work, so the focus is specifically on managing the business. It covers topics like financials, record keeping, billing, managing client relationships, and marketing efforts.

On the plus side, the book offers a lot of creative ideas to the reader - especially when it comes to managing client relationships and marketing efforts. A potential downside, however, is that many people may not feel comfortable with a lot of the ideas...many are kind of "off-the-wall" and would really require just the right kind of personality to be pulled off well.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for All Consultants.......2005-10-05

The subtitle of this book should be "What You Always Wanted to Know About Consulting But Didn't Know Who to Ask." Elaine is very generous in sharing her knowledge and experience with colleagues and potential competitors. The book is straight-forward, practical, and immensely readable. It covers everything from what to carry in your briefcase to what ethical considerations you may face. Not just for new consultants, this book has something for everyone in the profession.

1 out of 5 stars Very light on content.......2002-11-01

This disappointing book skirts the issue of consulting and instead uses generic advice about building any business. It consists of laundry lists, not usable advice. Bottom line: This will not help anyone build a consulting business.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!.......2002-10-17

One of the difficulties of independent consulting is the loss of colleagues to "bounce ideas with." Elaine's book helps to fill that gap! It's extremely easy to read, full of information, very practical, and well-organized! Elaine talks about lifestyle changes as well as business considerations-the complete guide for a new or an experienced consultant!

1 out of 5 stars It's a waste of money even for beginner.......2002-05-02

Sure this book is only for beginner or outsider of Cosulting business. But then, for the price of this book, I would rather buy a much cheaper book but with more useful information and ideas - such as Consulting for Dummies. The book is full of motherhood statements and it is more liked written by a grand mom and she called herself consultant; But come on, Consulting is a highly skillful business that require structural, systematic yet creative thinking. Overall, I think this book is a waste of money for experienced consultant. While for beginner, the reader will risk the wrong impression that it's this easy to win a consulting work - highly unlikely in a complex and competative world.

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Text on Inorganic Chemistry.......2000-09-05

"Concepts and Meodels of Inorganic Chemistry" is neither an encyclopedia of descriptive inorganic chemistry nor a textbook of structural inorganic chemistry. The book is organized into six major parts: Basic concepts, bonding structure, chemical reactions, coordination chemistry, organmetallic chemistry, and selected topics.

This text distincts itself from Cotton's "Basic Inorganic Chemistry", Shriver's "Inorganic Chemistry", and Misseler & Tarr by the amount of information and details presented in each chapter. Inoformation regarding chemical reactions is presented within a framework of concepts and models that help readers organize and retrieve chemical knowledge. Descriptive chemistry is woven into almost all chapters and is the subject of special topics chapters.

Atomic and molecular structure, symmetry and bonding are discussed n very thorough and detailed manner. Almost all the topics in DeKock and Gray's "Chemical Structure and Bonding" are included in this volume. Topics that are usually discussed briefly or omitted altogether in many inorganic chemistry texts are given special attention: stereochemistry models, spectra and bonding, and inorganic mechanisms. Section on organometallic chemistry can serve as an ideal supplement for an organic course. "Concepts and Models of Inorganic Chemistry" will suit a two-semester inorganic chemistry sequence. While no major texts can cover all the topics in bonding and structure, main group elements, transition metals and spectra, this text has fulfilled all the above purpose. The text is written in a more advanced level than Shriver and Cotton. Well-written book!

                        Book Description

In an intellectually engaging narrative that mixes science and history, theories and personalities, Pat Shipman asks the question: Can we have legitimate scientific investigations of differences among humans without sounding racist?

Through the original controversy over evolutionary theory in Darwin's time; the corruption of evolutionary theory into eugenics; the conflict between laboratory research in genetics and fieldwork in physical anthropology and biology; and the continuing controversies over the heritability of intelligence, criminal behavior, and other traits, the book explains both prewar eugenics and postwar taboos on letting the insights of genetics and evolution into the study of humanity.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, thoughtful and comprehensive.......2000-05-28

Shipman begins her book with Darwin and reflects on his struggles in presenting "The Origin of the Species" as he understood the controversy it would unleash. It is remarkable that the controversy has not abated in over a hundred years, but has instead evolved as delineated in the book. Shipman's work should be required reading for students in a variety of disciplines to give them the tools to defend against the henchmen of pseudoscience such as Rushton and Kevin MacDonald. Shipman reflects on the complexities of evolution and of human differences while making it clear that the human experience is diverse, and the use of science to support racism is not good science by any measure. This book is need badly in an updated version to uncover the flawed arguments of the newly prominent racists who are sheltered by academia.

5 out of 5 stars The Evolution of Racism.......1999-12-03

Creationists can be funny (See below). But this is no laughing matter. Pat Shipman, and other scientists, should be applauded for taking a stand against pseudoscience, not belittled. Kudos to Shipman for writing such a wonderful book.

Alas a writer who acknowledges that evolution implies racism and selection of the superior race. Politicians have been trying to suppress this, but they will fail in the end, as evolution wins. You cannot stop nature.

                              Book Description

Do you hate chick-lit? Floren Felvturn does. And in her own words, most romantic novels featuring well-meaning British dames couldn't organize a piss-up in a brewery. Cry On Cue introduces the anti chick-lit genre with rebellious zest. Through the demented narration of Floren Felvturn, a virginal nymphomaniac ordered to undergo court-ordered therapy, the novel savagely parodies romantic clichés, psychological healing, and all but destroys the familiar concept of a single Brit looking for love in all the wrong places. The book is edited by the controversial author of "Attempted Rapture", Mitchell Warren. Somehow, after listening to hours of conversational rambling and reading thousands of pages of meandering rhapsodies, Warren has taken Floren's traumatic memories and manic delusions and formed them into a coherent novel. And as you can see, for the creation of this book the authoress insisted that a hamster be placed prominently on the cover. An act of madness or the pinnacle of rational thought?
