The three boxes (education, career, and retirement) are re-examined by the master himself. Don't view these three important aspects of your life as part of a linear progression.

Bolles' What Colour is Your Parachute? has, in the short time since its release, become a classic in how to find a job. The Three Boxes is a related but rather different work. The author takes on the broader issues of life planning, which includes not only career, but also educational and personal planning. In some ways, this book is a rebuttal to the traditional college/career/retirement paradigm by showing that people don't have to (and,for that matter, won't even if they wished to) live their lives in the traditional career path straitjacket. The tone of the work is thoughtful but practical.

A lot of self-help oriented material nowadays seems to focus on mustering your potential to achieve your dreams. These works have their place, but they fail to answer a preliminary question--how does one know what one wants from life?

The Three Boxes is about the task of actually figuring out what you want, and then implementing what you want. It's remarkably free of needless fluff about the inner person, while filled with practical ideas on "breaking out" of the "traps" of modern career life.

This is a book to own. It's an easy and thought-provoking read, presented in light style with interesting graphics.

A Great Work for Its Time -- But for Today?.......2000-04-14

Richard Bolles has a delightful writing style and a light touch for addressing some of the most profound issues of our lives. I bought this book because of how much I enjoyed Bolles' treatment of job hunting in "What Color is Your Parachute?" Unlike "What Color," which has been constantly updated and revised to reflect the changing realities of the job market, "The Three Boxes" was written for a mid-70's audience and does not address the new realities faced by people in the 21st century. When Bolles wrote this, his (younger) audience was likely idealistic college students ready to join the Peace Corps and forgo material gratification for the sake of larger social issues. Today's college grads seem to be bent on amassing huge fortunes very quickly, even at the expense of their social and personal lives. This book is written for people of all ages, but this is just an example of how far priorities and attitudes have changed. I hope Bolles updates this book since it hits on very important life issues, but I find this edition has lost much of its relevance as our society has changed dramatically.

Still a mind-opener after all these years.......1998-06-23

I first read this book when it had been out only a few years, and it turned my head around. I had been brought up, like most children of the 'fifties, to think of life as a series of rigidly defined serial roles: first you were a student, then you were a worker, and finally you retired and got to do all the fun things you'd been putting off for the past 40-odd years. Having worked my way through graduate school, and done a bit of traveling in the process, I of course knew how artificial these distinctions were -- but I still tended to feel vaguely guilty about my "immature" lifestyle and rebuke myself for not "settling down" like a Real Grownup was "supposed to." Bolles set me straight -- in fact I was doing a pretty good job of balancing growth, work, and leisure in my life, and had nothing to be ashamed of. My subsequent work history has borne out the wisdom of his advice: I've been happiest and most productive when my life achieves that same balance; the most miserable time of my life was the nine-year period when I succumbed to the siren song of Silicon Valley and became a money-obsessed workaholic. This is a terrific book, and one that bears rereading every few years, especially when you feel your life slipping out of balance.

Very informative.......2006-06-06

This was a great book! It helped me take the blinders off when it comes to the famous phrase " They can get out of it!" Or "They must enjoy the treatment they choose to stay" I learned how the abuser is slowly step by step breaking down the lines of communication and outside family to mentally brain wash them. I also learned that it is so so very sad what these children witness and turn into with out the proper help. I also learned that we as a society would close our ears and eyes to these woman and kids until it was too late and they were tragically killed by a terrible slaying by their abuser. Thank you to Dan Dacus for opening my eyes. It was an amazing book i am proud to have it and i have refered it to a personal friend that is in a bad situation.

This book really gives you a front row seat to what really happens in this world. None the less right next door, you can only imagine what kind of stress and problems these events caused the people who witnessed them and those involved. I did witness the stress, troubles and nightmares and a few events that the author wrote about. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a second hand account of what goes on in this world, next door and even right under your own nose.

Lukewarm review.......2007-01-12

To me the title of this book, "The 20-CM Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope," suggested that it might be an after-market owner's manual. I was mistaken. Most of its content applies to the first time user of any amateur-class telescope. The only SCT-specific information it provides is: a brief history; a superficial treatment of its optics; principles of collimation; and pictures of an SCT with accessories attached. If you're looking for instrument-specific technical information of even the most meager variety, or maintenance, modification, and "accessorizing" tips, then find another book.

The author's discussion of polar alignment illustrates my point. He describes the use of a home made, 45 arc minute finderscope reticle. Nifty - just what I'm looking for! Alas, he fails to explain how to make one - not in detail, and not even in principle. So the whole discussion is nearly worthless. The author hits on most of the topics I find interesting, but I inevitably came away wanting more details. For example, the author discusses photography, photometry, spectroscopy, computers, image intensifiers and televideo. Impressive, right? But the whole of it is compressed into a mere 40 pages - and no single topic receives thorough treatment.

As suggested by the subtitle, "A practical observing guide," this book discusses the observational possibilities for an SCT owner. It is not a practicum on the use, maintenance, modification or technical aspects of any particular SCT.

These criticisms, however, reflect my own misapprehension of the book's intent. I hasten to say it adequately addresses the question, "What can I expect to do with an SCT?" The author's organizational skill and conversational writing make this 246 page book an interesting read. The narrative flow, however, suffers from the excessive use of footnotes (228 total) - of which the most relevant could have been thoughtfully worked into the text, and the least relevant left out entirely.

You can get a fairly good idea of the material covered by browsing the table of contents online. Be advised: this is a non-technical, non-mathematical, non-detailed, generic SCT oriented book. It is anybody's guess why the author chose such an approach for a geeky market like amateur astronomy. If you can buy it at a deeply discounted price, do so - you'll have a couple of hours of reading on a topic to which you can relate. Better yet, buy a used copy as it will probably not become a part of your permanent reference collection. Best of all, try to borrow a copy from your local library, which is where my discarded copy will eventually end up.

Excellent user's guide.......2004-04-05

As the author points out, the first economical 20 cm. S-C telescope by makers such as Celestron and Meade revolutionized amateur astronomy back in the 70's and 80's, and their influence is still being felt today. The telescope's design has many advantages over the competition, such as good portability, excellent control of optical distortions, and ease of use. The S-C telescope is distinguished by having a concave paraboloidal primary with a convex hyperboloidal secondary, compared to the Gregorian telescope with it's similarly paraboloidal primary but concave secondary, which produces an upright image, unlike the S-C which is inverted like most telescopes. The corrector plate on the front of the S-C corrects for spherical aberration.

This design is different from the little 3-inch Maksutov scopes from Questar. These use a hyperboloidal primary and secondary. The advantage to this arrangement is that the positive and negative surfaces act to cancel out various optical aberrations and distortions. My understanding is that the Celestron telescopes actually employ elliptical rather than paraboloidal optics, but anyway, tens of thousands of these scopes have proven their worth in the hands of new and experienced amateurs around the world for decades.

If you're an experienced amateur, many of the topics, especially on viewing various sky objects will already be familiar to you, but if you're a new amateur there is much good information here. The author starts out with a brief intro and history of the instrument and then proceeds to a discussion of how to get started in viewing using easy subjects such as the moon and planets, and then proceeds to more advanced and harder to locate subjects like nebulae, star clusters, double-stars, galaxies, and so on. For the intermediate and advanced amateur, there are chapters on special topics such as observing variable stars, asteroids, comets, and multiple Jovian eclipses.

The last half of the book has sections on some of the more modern accessories and topics aspects such as international networking, astrophotography, photometers, spectroscopy, televisions and image intensifiers. There is an extensive series of appendices on topics such as cleaning the corrector plate, how to align the polar axis, collimation of the S-C telescope, mount vibrations, a field operations packing checklist, astronomical nomenclature, and a list of dozens of the brightest stars and nearby stars.

The author's story about how he was the first person, using an amateur group of observers spread out over Arizona, to gather the necessary obsevational data to calculate the size of the asteroid Aglaja during it's occultation of a star, was interesting. And the section on astrophotography reminded me of my first experiences in that area in the early 70's using a 25 or 30-year old Exacta VX Thagee-Oresden camera. Overall this is an excellent user's and observer's guide that should be valuable to new and experienced observers alike.

Good Book, But Now Dated.......2002-12-02

This is a good introduction to the SC telescope, and when first published it helped to fill a great void. While most of the information in the book is still useful and valid, it needs an update to include the modern computer-enhanced SCT (GO TO scopes). I would love to see a new edition.

There really are some genuine nuggets of wisdom in this book. One has to become accustomed, however, to the first-person narrative and the sometimes "I'm so cute" humor.

This is a very good book; at times humorous, and at times just plain warm-feeling! It deals with many aspects of SCT's , some chapters are a bit too thin for my tastes now.

Although I read it cover-to-cover already; I keep going back to it quite often..

The Handbook of Solvents contains up-to-date information about the usages of solvent. The references of each chapter show that the book was written with up-to-date materials. As a coating and paint technology engineer, I have interests in solvent selection. This book guided me to select solvent by its solubility properties, evaporation properties, toxicities and their relation to the appropriate applications.

An introductory chapter summarizes observations on the globular clusters of our Galaxy. Then follows a full description of the theoretical analysis developed during the last twenty years. The final two of the seven chapters discuss how the collapse of a cluster core terminates as a result of double star formation, with neutron stars and black holes possibly involved. In addition, the postcollapse phase, currently a rapidly developing field of research, is briefly described.

This volume reviews recent progress in the study of dynamics of star clusters. The meeting focused on the enormous progress of both the observation and the theoretical modeling of star clusters. New results from the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope (HST) include the mass function down to the hydrogen burning limits, white dwarf sequence, and central density profiles of `post-collapse' clusters by star counts. On the theoretical side, this symposium saw the first direct evidence of gravothermal oscillation through N-body simulation, which was made possible by GRAPE-4, the dedicated special-purpose computer for N-body simulation. Numerical techniques to combine stellar evolution and dynamical evolution of the cluster were presented.
The book will be of primary interest to astrophysicists.
