    Book Description

One of the outstanding accounting theoreticians of the twentieth century, Carl Thomas Devine exhibited a breadth and depth of knowledge few in the field of accounting have equaled. This book collects together eight previously unpublished essays on accounting theory written by Professor Devine.

Professor Devine passed away in 1998, prior to the significant scandals that have plagued accounting and business since the collapse of Enron and Arthur Andersen. Many of the essays collected here are particularly important given these events. The first three essays are devoted to ethics and provide profound insights into the importance of a profession's ethical presuppositions. The book then presents essays which provide a critical examination of the relevance of hermeneutics and deconstruction to an understanding of accounting practice and an analysis of the academic "game" particularly with respect to Professor Devine's experiences in the Florida university system. The final essay in the volume is devoted to acritique of rational choice theory applications in accounting.

Revisiting and building upon themes developed in earlier work, this collection of essays will be essential reading for accounting historians, accounting theoreticians and all those interested in the work of Carl Thomas Devine.

      5 out of 5 stars Devine Inspiration.......2000-02-14

Dr. Devine's philosophies were viewed by many scholars as not only exemplar but legendary. I can remember when Berkeley thought he had radical and rebellious thought processes back in the sixties. Little did anyone know how important his work was, let alone how influencial it had become. He was truly a modest hero. He believed what he believed and didn't care what the general concensus thought. These essays are the best he could do. Which is more than most of us can comprehend. These books took a lifetime to compose and should be required reading for any accounting or finance doctoral student. I am most sure that I am not biased. These essays are of a high intensity level. Believe me when I tell you that these are a must read. They should be coveted. I should know since I spent all of my 34 years watching him write them on the dining room table. I know how incredible his work is and hope you will enjoy them as much as I have. I enjoyed being his daughter.

4 out of 5 stars Good material for persons considering a career change.......2006-07-10

This is a good read for those professionals who are thinking about switching into a new career field. The book helps the reader see how to change industry related jargon items from an older resume format so that the new resume will make the candidate attractive to a hiring managers in other fields. The overview of why the candidate needs to change formats based on goals, recommended changes, and resume samples should give any reader ample material to update their own resume.

3 out of 5 stars Good Advice, Middling Format And Examples.......2006-06-02

This book is good for career changers, with a focus on white collar jobs, though anyone in a career transition can find useful material here. The first section of the text is quite good and makes many important points. It is particularly strong on discussions of keywords, advantages and disadvantages of various resume styles (chronological, functional, and hybrid formats are thoroughly reviewed,) and presentation standards (fonts and type size, uses of type enhancements such as italicizing, etc.)

There are a few examples where similar resumes with relatively identical information to convey are compared and contrasted in differing formats, and I find that quite helpful. Where the book falls down a bit is in the sample resumes presented, and in the organization of the book, which makes it difficult to find the most relevant examples for a specific situation. Some of the sample resumes seem to disobey the basic tenets discussed in the beginning of the book, and are rather ornate and crowded with relatively small font sizes used. (Probably the worst example is that on page 110 for Melanie Martinson who is attempting a career transition from library science to information technology.)

Overall this book makes many excellent points in the opening sections, but the examples and samples are sometimes less than ideal. If you use this book for background information it can be quite helpful, but you may or may not find the sample resumes particularly germane to your situation.

        Book Description

Much of the modern world's knowledge of criminal court trials in the Late Roman Republic derives from the orations of Cicero. His eleven court trial speeches have provided information about the trials and the practices of the time period. Records of the prosecution's case are lost; these speeches, our only transcripts of the time, were delivered by the defense. The Case for the Prosecution in the Ciceronian Era attempts to restore the judicial balance by depicting the lost side of the trial.
Guided by Cicero's argument, Michael C. Alexander recreates the prosecution's case against the defendants in the trials.
Organized into eleven chapters, each detailing one trial, the core of the work discusses the different dimensions of each trial, the circumstances surrounding the cases, those involved, the legal charges and allegations made by the prosecution, the ways in which the prosecution might have countered Cicero's rebuttal and the outcome. There is also a discussion concerning particular problems the prosecution may have faced in preparing for the trial. This book reveals strong points in favor of the prosecution; justifies the hope of the prosecutor, a private citizen who had volunteered to undertake the case; and asks why the prosecutors believed they would come out victorious, and why they eventually failed.
The Case for the Prosecution in the Ciceronian Era draws on ancient rhetorical theory and on Roman law to shed light on these events. It will interest historians and classicists interested in Ciceronian oratory and those intrigued by legal history.
Michael C. Alexander is Associate Professor of History, University of Illinois, Chicago.

          Book Description

Despite remarkable advances in astronomy, space research, and related technology since the first edition of this book was published, the philosophy of the prior editions has remained the same throughout. However, because of this progress, there is a need to update the information and present the new findings. In the fourth edition of Astronomy: Principles and Practice, much like the previous editions, the celebrated authors give a comprehensive and systematic treatment to the theories of astronomy. This reference furthers your study of astronomy by presenting the basic software and hardware, providing several straightforward mathematical tools, and discussing some simple physical processes that are either involved in the astronomer's tools of trade or concerned in the mechanisms associated with astronomical bodies. The first six chapters introduce the simple observations that can be made by the eye as well as discuss how such observations were interpreted by previous civilizations. The next several chapters examine the interpretation of positional measurements and the basic principles of celestial mechanics. The authors then explore radiation, optical telescopes, and radio and high-energy technologies. They conclude with practical projects and exercises. New to the Fourth Edition: · Revised values such as the obliquity of the ecliptic · Expanded material that is devoted to new astronomies and techniques such as optical data recording · A listing of Web sites that offer information on relevant astronomical events Revised and expanded, this edition continues to offer vital information about the fundamentals of astronomy. Astronomy: Principles and Practice, Fourth Edition satisfies the need of anyone who has a strong desire to understand the philosophy and applications of the science of astronomy.

                    Book Description

The most fascinating aspects of coral reefs relate to how corals and reef residents meet the challenges of survival and live together.

The focus of this book is on how a coral reef functions—the jobs of individual residents and how they collectively create a sustainable community. The author explores how solar energy powers the reef, how raw materials are used efficiently and waste is recycled, why biodiversity is security, and how everything is connected. There are also many insights into the more personal lives of reef residents—some are as strange as any science fiction. By viewing coral reefs in the context of a human city, one can more easily appreciate the creative ways reef communities operate; they neither undermine their own survival nor that of other communities elsewhere. In other words, a variety of species collectively enhances the survival of the entire community.

Dr. Murphy sees reef communities existing in a dynamic equilibrium where forces of competition, destruction, and decay are balanced by cooperation, repair, and rejuvenation.

There are lessons for those of us who are concerned about making our own communities more sustainable. The subject matter is serious, but it is not taken so seriously that it isn't fun.

                    Book Description

Reefs are an extraordinary natural phenomenon. Visible from outer space, coral reefs are the largest biologically constructed features known; in close proximity their spectacular beauty and abundance of life is dazzling. Reefs are estimated to occupy only a small percentage of the oceans, but their importance to the marine environment is many-faceted and global. Reefs create harbours and allow the development of shallow basins with associated mangrove or seargrass communities; they protect coastlines from erosion; reefs are involved in the regulation of atmospheric carbon, which in turn contributes to climate control; ancient reefs can provide extensive oil and gas reservoirs. From a biological standpoint, however, the great significance of reefs lies in their ability to generate and maintain a substantial proportion of tropical marine biodiversity. This text documents those biological innovations which have moulded the evolution of reef ecosystems and given rise to the highly complex communities found today. The appearance of clonality, the acquisition of photosymbiosis and the radiation of predator groups are all discussed in depth. Throughout the book, Rachel Wood uses data from the fossil record to document the evolutionary development of reef ecosystems. This interdisciplinary approach has the aim of providing an analytical text which will be of value not only to advanced undergraduates and postgraduate courses, but also to researchers in ancient reef ecology. Rachel Wood is Royal Society University Research Fellow, and Fellow, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The history of reefs - a biological perspective.......2000-07-15

All too often reefs have been described as merely geological phenomena. In her book, Rachel Wood takes a different approached missing for a long time: she treats reefs mainly from the biological perspective, i.e. as phenomena with biological intercations in its ecological community. Appropriate space is devoted to the discussion of reef-builder ecology (clonality vs. modularity), predators, herbivores, and symbionts.

Part I of the book rather briefly (90 pp.) deals with reefs in Earth history and excessively (30 pp.) discussions the effects of mass extinctions on reefs. This chapter is oriented mainly at major episodes of constructor consortia blooms, whereas times of reduced reef growth do not receive much attention (although the discussion of the reasons for this reduction seem at least as interesting). Part II of the volume (40 pp.) is concerned with environmental controls of reef growth and does not provide much new information; nonetheless, these issues need to be mentioned within the given scope. Part III certainly is the most interesting and supplies the reader with several new interpretations of biological interactions in reefs: Growth form and autecology of reef builders are seen in close correlation; the role of biological disturbance is discussed at length; the origins and consequences of photosymbiosis are treated as well as the means and ways of competition among reef organisms. With its 150 pages, this chapter is the most rewarding and well justifies buying this book.

A few criticisms have to be raised, however. The contents are skewed towards the author's favourite subject (Archaeocyatha); the importance of bioerosion is not stressed adequately and remains rather sketchy; the geological time-scale used is a little outdated; and the ethymologically incorrect form "microbialite" (instead of microbolite) is used throughout.

Nonetheless, the text is very well-structured and arranged logically, with meaningful headings providing rapid orientation. An index further contributes to the easy access. Up-to-date references and a glossary for the non-specialist are additional positive features. All in all, this volume is well worth reading from the first to the last page for everyone interested in this fascinating facet of biological and physical interaction. Compulsory for the palaeontology teacher, and at least every library focussing on Earth Sciences should have it available!

                      Book Description

1896. The series of papers collected in this volume may be considered as a compliment or commentary to my Essay on Classification, since I have endeavored to present here in a more popular form the views first expressed in that work. And although the direct intention of these pages has been, as their title indicates, to give some general hints to young students as to the methods by which scientific truth has been reached, including a general sketch of the history of science in past times, yet I have also wished to avail myself of this opportunity to enter my earnest protest against the transmutation theory, revived of late with so much ability, and so generally received. It is my belief that naturalists are chasing a phantom, in their search after some material gradation among created beings, by which the whole animal Kingdom may have been derived by successive development from a single germ, or from a few germs...the resources of the Deity cannot be so meager, that, in order to create a human being endowed with reason, he must change a monkey into a man.

                          Description:
The extinction and recovery of scleractinian corals at the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary was analyzed based on a global database of taxonomically revised late Campanian to Paleocene coral collections. In contrast to earlier statements, our results indicate that extinction rates of corals were only moderate in comparison to other marine invertebrates. We have calculated a 30% extinction rate for Maastrichtian coral genera occurring in more than one stratigraphic stage and more than one geographic region. Reverse rarefaction suggests that some 45% of all coral species became extinct. Photosymbiotic (zooxanthellate) corals were significantly more affected by the extinction than azooxanthellate corals; colonial forms were hit harder than solitary forms, and among colonial forms an elevated integration of corallites raised extinction risk. Abundance, as measured by the number of taxonomic occurrences, had apparently no influence on survivorship, but a wide geographic distribution significantly reduced extinction risk. As in bivalves and echinoids neither species richness within genera nor larval type had an effect on survivorship. An indistinct latitudinal gradient is visible in the extinction, but this is exclusively due to a higher proportion of extinction-resistant azooxanthellate corals in higher-latitude assemblages. No significant geographic hotspot could be recognized, neither in overall extinction rates nor in the extinction of endemic clades. More clades than previously recognized passed through the K-T boundary only to become extinct within the Danian. These failed survivors were apparently limited to regions outside the Americas. Recovery as defined by the proportional increase of newly evolved genera, was more rapid for zooxanthellate corals than previously assumed and less uniform geographically than the extinction. Although newly evolved Danian azooxanthellate genera were significantly more common than new zooxanthellate genera, the difference nearly disappeared by the late Paleocene suggesting a more rapid recovery of zooxanthellate corals in comparison to previous analyses. New Paleocene genera were apparently concentrated in low latitudes, suggesting that the tropics formed a source of evolutionary novelty in the recovery phase.

                            Description:
Coral reefs worldwide are under threat from various anthropogenic factors, including overfishing and pollution. A new study by Mumby et al. highlights the trophic relationships between humans, carnivorous and herbivorous fishes, and the potential role of no-take areas in maintaining vulnerable coral reef ecosystems. No-take areas, where fishing is prohibited, are vital tools for managing food webs, ecosystem function and the resilience of reefs, in a seascape setting that extends far beyond the boundaries of the reefs themselves.

                              Description:
Ordovician reefs of the South China Block occur chiefly in three stratigraphic units: (1) the middle Tremadoc Fenhsiang Formation and the upper part of the Lunshan Formation; (2) the late Tremadoc Hunghuayuan Formation; and (3) the middle Ashgill Xiazhen, Sanjushan and Daduhe Formations. The region therefore records part of the Early Palaeozoic reef expansion episode and permits a broader assessment of change in Ordovician reef facies. During middle Tremadoc time, lithistid sponge-bryozoan-Calathium-calcimicrobially dominated patch reefs of the Fenhsiang Formation occur in the high-energy belt of the central Yangtze Platform. Columnar nonskeletal stromatolites of the Lunshan Formation (coeval with Fenhsiang Formation) occur on the southeastern margin of the platform, where low diversity reef-attached organisms, and the generally fine-grained character of the sediment, are consistent with a depth below normal wave base. Calathium and lithistid sponges were the principal reef builders of late Tremadoc reefs and were widespread in the areas of Yichang (Hubei Province) and Dongzhi (Anhui Province), from the platform centre to its margin settings. Bryozoan reef builders occur only in the platform centre with a high diversity of reef dwellers such as brachiopods, trilobites and nautiloids. However, during the same time, at the platform margins, microbes played an important part in reef building together with Calathium and lithistid sponges. The middle-late Tremadoc lithistid sponge-bryozoan-Calathium-microbial community was replaced by a middle Ashgill coral-stromatoporoid community and shows that the succession of community replacement during the Ordovician took a relatively long time. Restricted by the black shales of the main part of the Yangtze region, middle Ashgill reef complexes can be found only on the northeast platform of Cathaysian Land, between the Yushan (Jiangxi) and Changshan (Zhejiang) regions. Carbonate mudmounds are present on the western margin of the Yangtze Platform. On the northeast platform of Cathaysian Land, patch reefs (some higher relief) with talus and biostromes of the Xiazhen Formation consist of high-diversity biotas of corals, stromatoporoids, calcimicrobes, brachiopods and gastropods. The Sanjushan Formation is age-equivalent to the Xiazhen Formation and contains carbonate mudmounds that are composed of abundant calcareous algae and calcimicrobia. Uplift forced a northward extension of Cathaysian Land and caused a regional relative sea-level fall, eliminating this reef complex prior to the first extinction event of the Late Ordovician. The Daduhe Formation carbonate mudmounds occur in the nearshore belt of Kangdian Land (western margin of the Yangtze Platform) and are paraconformably overlain by the Hirnantian Nancheng Formation. In total, the Ordovician reefs of south China show a range of habitats and controls on growth and demise.

                                Description:
Stone tools discovered within uplifted marine terraces along the Red Sea coast of Eritrea at the Abdur Archaeological Site, dated to 125+/-7 ka (the last interglacial, marine isotope stage 5e), show that early humans occupied coastal areas by this time [Walter et al. (2000) Nature 405, 65-69]. In the present paper the stratigraphy, facies types and faunal composition from 25 measured sections of the tool-bearing Abdur Reef Limestone (ARL) are documented in detail and interpreted to provide a palaeoenvironmental context for the stone artefacts and a model for the deposition of the ARL. The ARL represents a complex marine terrace sequence. Erosional surfaces indicative of interrupted sedimentation are locally observed at two levels within the ARL. They subdivide the complex into three subunits, named 5e"1, 5e"2, and 5e"3, representing different stages of the marine isotope stage 5e sea level highstand, comprising six depositional phases (I-VI) of the ARL. Subunit 5e"1 begins with the initial transgression of the 5e sea level highstand leading to the deposition of widespread lag gravels on which rich oyster beds developed in shallow water (phase I). It further records rapid deepening accompanied by the deposition of low-energy carbonates with scarce corals (phase II), and later shoaling characterised by local development of a fringing reef tract in a sedimented environment (phase III). Subunit 5e"1 is capped locally by a burrowed hardground that is laterally equivalent to depositional discontinuities, interpreted as caused by a globally recognised mid-5e sea level low stand (phase IV). Extensive reef build-up in response to sea level rise and improved conditions for coral growth characterises subunit 5e"2 (phase V). A possible second sea level drop during the 5e highstand is inferred from the oyster-encrusted upper surface of subunit 5e"2. Subunit 5e"3 encompasses restricted coral patches that developed on the upper surface of the underlying subunit during the last stage of the 5e marine high stand (phase VI). Two different toolkits are found in the ARL. One consists of bifacial hand axes and cores of the Acheulian industry, typically associated with the oyster beds encrusted on the transgressive lag deposits. The other consists of Middle Stone Age (MSA)-type obsidian flakes and blades, mainly found in the nearshore and beach environments alongside debris from marine invertebrates and large land mammals. The distribution of these tools suggests that foraging activities of early humans varied with environmental setting. The Abdur Archaeological Site represents a late example of the Acheulian/MSA transition, seen as a benchmark for early modern human behaviour, and is, to date, the earliest well-dated example of early human adaptation to marine food resources.
