            Book Description

When manmade law, natural law, and spiritual law are in conflict, our whole society is weakened. In order to bring these different laws into balance, we must first seek to understand each of them, how they function, how they affect us.

These laws are best understood through examining history—the history of customs, beliefs, philosophies, political currents, inventions, discoveries, and persecutions. Looking into the past shows us that true freedom and equality can only be achieved when we accept the physical and spiritual constraints that define us all.

Francis Baily spent his 20s exploring unsettled parts of North America and didn't get around to astronomy until he was 37, when he traveled to an annular eclipse of the Sun in southern Scotland. On May 15, 1836, he watched as light from the occluded sun poured through the lunar valleys and reached him broken up into "a row of lucid points, like a string of bright beads." With those words, Baily founded the industry of eclipse chasing.

The best feature of Totality is its wealth of biographical information about eclipse chasers past and present. Throughout this century, every total eclipse over land has been attended by scientists willing to travel great distances, endure hostile climates--and risk complete failure because of clouds--for a few minutes' view of the corona. This turbulent outer part of the sun, best studied when the sun is obscured, draws observers across the globe to this day.

Totality, like most eclipse guides produced in time for the 1999 eclipse, doesn't seem to know which readers it's addressing. Near the beginning, the reader is abjured not to let all the science bits "stand in the way of your enjoyment of the wild, wacky, and wonderful things people have thought and done about solar eclipses." What a strange sentiment in such a fascinating and adult marriage of science, history, biography, and sound technical advice. --Simon Ings, Amazon.co.uk

            Book Description

On July 11th, 1991, a total eclipse was visible from Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and South America. More than 30,000 people traveled from the United States alone to witness this event. To mark this occasion, the University of Hawaii Press published Mark Littmann and Ken Wilcox's first edition of Totality: Eclipses of the Sun, a unique treatment of these phenomena that served as an invaluable resource for eclipse watchers. Now Oxford University Press is pleased to be publishing a new edition of Totality that has been updated to include current information on the August 1999 eclipse over parts of Europe, Turkey, and Africa, as well as information on other major eclipses of the forthcoming decade. Including the basics of how and where to view an eclipse--and how to view it safely--this book also presents the history, mythology, solar science, and astrodynamics of eclipses. This new edition also adds Fred Espenak, noted eclipse photographer and astrophysicist at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, to the team of authors and integrates many of his stunning color photographs into this unparalleled exploration of eclipses. An indispensable resource for anyone who plans to observe an eclipse, and a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in astronomy, Totality will be the only reference you need to take you through next year's eclipse and beyond.

            4 out of 5 stars Totality.......2006-01-03

Totality by Mark Littman, Ken Willcox and Fred Espenak was a pretty interesting book. This book explained the stages of eclipses of the sun. It also explained how to safely view eclipses and the history of eclipses. Mark Littman( a professor in science writing and astronomy at the University of Tennessee), Ken Willcox( was a professor of physics and astronomy at Bartlesville Wesleyan College) and Fred Espenak( an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center) explained everything about eclipses very well. They explain the parts of the sun and the stages of the sun. The authors used many examples of past eclipses to back up there information. There were many interesting and detailed pictures to look at. They showed pictures of the stages of eclipses and famous people such as Albert Einstein and Joseph Norman Lockyer. I enjoyed this book most of the time but sometimes it got a little boring. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy reading about solar eclipses and people who want to observe solar eclipses themselves. This book is good for people just starting to observe solar eclipses because it gives safety rules to use when looking at and eclipse. Also it tells you what kind of telescopes and cameras you should use and at what focal length to get the best picture you are looking for. I am sure this book could help out a beginner in observing eclipses. The most interesting part of this book to me was when I read observing a total eclipse. I was fascinated when I learned that animals and plants were affected by total solar eclipses. There were many examples of this. Also I was interested in learning about the many different eclipses. There were many different examples of eclipses to read about. The least interesting part to me was when the authors talked about the history of eclipses. That part was a little boring , but overall this was a pretty good book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to Eclips-o-phile's bookshelf.......2001-07-20

Even if you have other eclipse books at home, TOTALITY provides fresh information about this fascinating phenomenon. This book describes in clear language what makes a total solar eclipse so special. The authors explanation of the science behind eclipses helps to demystify the eclipse, while the chapter devoted to impressions from a group of dedicated eclipse chasers, gives a sense of the magic of a total solar eclipse. There are plenty of drawings and photographs complement the writing, with an excellent set of references in the appendix. Highly recommended, Jerry Levy ....

5 out of 5 stars Feel again the excitement of the totality.......1999-11-29

After being three times under the Moon's shadow, I already know very well what kind of excitement, marvel and amazement a person can feel during a total eclipse of the Sun. Reading "Totality", not only you learn, understand and comprehend better everything concerning the "most awesome sight in the heavens" (sic from the book's review), but feel again those very special sensations you only expect to find during totality. If you are not infected by the eclipse bug after the 1999 European eclipse, perhaps this book will do the work. I only miss a bit more extent on science (chapter 9) and about historical eclipses (chapter 5). Anyway, a very well-written, complete and fascinating book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on solar eclipses!.......1999-07-28

"Totality" is a superior reference providing a very comprehensive coverage of solar eclipses. I highly recommend this book for advice on understanding, enjoying, photographing, and experiencing solar eclipses, especially total solar eclipses. The information provided is easy to understand as well as practical and useful. I have about a dozen books on eclipses and this is one is the best. "Totality" is a must read for anyone preparing to experience a solar eclipse.

5 out of 5 stars superior explanation of the solar eclipse phenomenon.......1998-10-21

very good book for understanding all the aspects of solar eclipses; gives advice on how to view them, and conveys why they are special events; after reading this book, I was lucky enought to travel to Aruba to see my first total solar eclipse right beside the authors--it was great!

                      Book Description

This is the first scientific review of all factors affecting incubation in avian nests. These range from nest construction, egg characteristics and patterns of embryonic development. There is an extensive section describing incubation behaviour of parents and embryos, and there are chapters reviewing brood patch physiology and the various factors determining the incubation environment, including nest microbiology. Another section provides chapters giving detailed descriptions of examples of unusual aspects of avian incubation, whilst the final section provides consideration of the ecological, energetic and fitness cost of incubation. Written by authorities in their respective fields from around the world, this provides a comprehensive review of this critical aspect of avian reproduction. Much of the data included has not been previously published, and so Avian Incubation is not only an extensive reference text but is also a valuable contribution to our basic understanding of incubation.

                        Book Description

Frontiers in Magnetism of Reduced Dimension Systems presents a definitive statement of our current knowledge and the state of the art in a field that has yet to achieve maturity, even though there are a number of potential applications of thin magnetic films and multilayers, such as magnetic sensors, data storage/retrieval media, actuators, etc.
The book is organized into 13 chapters, each including a lecture and contributed papers on a similar subject. Five chapters deal with theoretical descriptions of electron transport phenomena, relaxation processes, nonlinear paramagnetic interactions, phase transitions and macroscopic quantum effects in magnetic films and particles. The description of different characterization techniques occupies an important place in the book. Separate chapters are dedicated to magnetic resonances (FMR, SWR, NMR), magneto-optical spectroscopy, controlling chaos, magnetoelastic phenomena and magnetic resonance force microscopy. A further chapter gives a detailed review, spread over a number of papers, of materials in current use in information storage devices.

Nancy Means Wright, who teaches at the Writer's Digest School, obviously learned her lessons well; her first novel is a polished, moving mystery about a community of Vermont farmers who have to add a barn-burning arsonist to their long list of troubles. Wright's central character--a strong woman struggling to hold her family together after her husband has abandoned them--is both an American icon aand a believable modern heroine.

“Fine story telling, mixing rural folksiness with both big-time and small-time misdeeds.”

“Regional fans should keep an eye out for this one.”

“A terrific mystery, filled with real people in real jeopardy. Vermont has never seemed so dangerous— which is probably what makes this book so much fun.”

3 out of 5 stars Nice to see a farmer in a book like this.......2002-10-21

but take the details about farming with a large grain of salt. There's some pretty screwy stuff in there that is just plain wrong, or else done in ways that no farmer would ever do for labor or economic reasons. For example, a milking machine catches on fire when not being used. There's no way a milking machine (singular, you notice) can catch on fire. That's like saying your electric frying pan can catch on fire when it's not plugged in and is sitting on your kitchen counter waiting to get used. The wiring for the system could catch on fire, but that's more than just one machine. It's mistakes like this that prove the author doesn't quite get it. And yes,I'm a dairy farmer. But it's a nice attempt and I'll probably read others in the series just because it does feature a farmer.

5 out of 5 stars a view of the other vermont.......2001-05-14

This is the first in the Ruth Willmarth series of mysteries, and it will make you want to read the rest. Nancy Means Wright is exceptionally good at capturing the spirit, dialect and values of rural Vermont. She loves her state but does not paint it out to be all idyllic, as do many other writers. This novel starts out with the shocking murder of an older woman and a dog and goes on to develop her personable characters that will reappear in the subsequent mysteries. Left by her husband to care for a dairy farm and two children, Willmarth is a gutsy, intuitive protagonist. This is a must read for those who love Vermont and for those who admire strong women protagonists.

                        Book Description

As the popularity of women’s basketball burgeons, Karra Porter reminds us in Mad Seasons that today’s Women’s National Basketball Association, or WNBA had its origins in a ragtag league twenty years earlier. Porter tells the story of the Women’s Professional Basketball League WBL, which pioneered a new era of women’s sports.

Formed in 1978, the league included the not-so-storied Dallas Diamonds, Chicago Hustle, and Minnesota Fillies. Porter’s book takes us into the heart of the WBL as teams struggled with nervous sponsors, an uncertain fan base, and indifferent sportswriters. Despite bouncing paychecks, having to sleep on floors, and being stranded on road games, the players endured and thrived.

Karra Porter brings to life the pioneers of the WBL: “Machine Gun” Molly Bolin, who set lasting scoring records—then faced an historic custody battle because of her basketball career; Connie Kunzmann, a popular player whose murder rocked the league; Liz Silcott, whose remarkable talents masked deeper problems off the court; Ann Meyers, who went from an NBA tryout to the league she had rebuffed; Nancy Lieberman, whose flashy play and marketing savvy were unlike anything the women's game had ever seen.

A story of hardship and sacrifice, but also of dedication and love for the game, Mad Seasons brings the WBL back to life and shows in colorful detail how this short-lived but pioneering league ignited the imagination of a new generation of female athletes and fans.

5 out of 5 stars So Close, Yet So Far.......2006-08-16

What would you say about a league that survived for three tumultuous seasons due to players who many times had paychecks bounce higher than the basketballs, a handful of owners who truly wanted to operate a first-rate league and a fandom that came out in impressive numbers for the final championship series?

Karra Porter, an attorney who has represented several WNBA players, pens the first history of the WBL, that operated from 1978-1981. It is an important addition to the knowledge of a reader who enjoys exploring basketball history or wants to better comprehend the battle waged in women's team sports to have viable leagues at the professional level.

Porter covers every facet of the game - from the front office and hardcourt, to the media and fans - and thoroughly describes the financial stumbling off the court that doomed the product on the court.

Ultimately it was the shabby treatment of players that destroyed the league. In the final season, several teams and individuals staged walkouts in protest of not being paid. A showdown between owners who wanted the league to be operated professionally and those who had more shallow verbiage than cash caused a rift that sunk the WBL in a sea of broken promises.

But how close the WBL came to making it.

At least one NBA owner was interested in investing in an existing team, but watched to see if the league would stabilize financially. The league just missed on what became the sports boom in cable television, when a then regional operation in Bristol, Conn., espn, began its search to show sports 24 hours a day.

As much oral history as it is research, Mad Seasons is a great read.

                        5 out of 5 stars Mad Love.......2006-07-23

This book from new author Karra Porter was well worth the wait. It is not a dry history of the oft forgot WBL, but rather an engaging and fun read. The years of research that went into this book is obvious with its detailed accounts and interviews. A true labor of love by a dedicated basketball fan, "Mad Seasons" offers an objective "insider's" look at the rise and fall of this pioneering effort.

Fans and women's basketball professionals alike should read this book to see just far we've come and what the phrase "playing for the love of the game" really means.

I would, however, have included the unpublished "Media Glare" chapter (see the book's website for more info) rather than the "Snapshots" chapter. While the snapshots are interesting and amusing, media coverage remains a hot issue among fans and I think many would have been greatly interested in it - particularly as it also gives us the history of the first women's college basketball poll.

                              Book Description

What begins as just another day at North Middle School quickly turns into an unforgettable nightmare as faculty begin to turn up dead with letters of the alphabet carved into them. And school teacher Steve Asher is right in the thick of things, having received a strange phone call from Principal Alex Webster arranging an early morning meeting to discuss how to handle a situation. "No big deal," he'd said. But now he was dead. When Asher's best friend becomes the major suspect in the hideous crimes, Steve sets out to prove the man's innocence and unmask the killer. But is he hampering the investigation and endangering the lives of his friends as he follows the twisted trail the killer leaves behind?

The Mad Season has all of the plot twists, humor and page turning suspense the reader has come to expect from Al Blanchard the award winning author of Murder at Walden Pond and The Iscariot Conspiracy.

5 out of 5 stars Blanchard's books keep getting better!!.......2003-01-09

Once in a while a reader finds a favorite author whom he/she rushes to the store to buy the newest book solely based on the author. This has happened to me with Al Blanchard. All of his books and short stories are so wonderfully crafted that I know for sure I will enjoy and relish his tales. In his latest, Blanchard has created a mystery based on murders at a public school. The wonderful descriptions of the characters, the way sub-plots are interwoven throughout the story, and the ability in all of us to relate to our school days makes this book a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars Back to School is Murder.......2002-10-23

In his second Steve Asher mystery, The Mad Season, Blanchard sharpens his craft while losing none of the charm of the first. The story is more of a whodunit than Murder at Walden Pond, but Blanchard still centers the story with his reluctant, appealing sleuth Asher. Blanchard also has a gold mine of a setting: a public school. Is there any place in the world as people intensive as a public school? They are places of shifting loyalties, lifelong friends, career long grudges... and there is a shaky hierarchy of superintendents and principals trying to impose order on a world that is intrinsically messy. Blanchard not only takes you back to school but lets you delight in the chaos.
