Book Description
Training is wasted unless employees really learn. This book makes sure that learning happens--every time.
Just as you can lead a horse to water, but it won't necessarily drink, so you can give an employee training, but he may not actually learn...unless, of course, the trainer uses this insightful new book. TURNING TRAINING INTO LEARNING provides a specific, tested method for making sure training equals real learning.
Written for anyone who must train others, this step-by-step guide shows exactly how to create a program that engages trainees and ensures that they remember and use what they've learned when they get back to work.
Readers learn how to: * Analyze exactly what a particular trainee needs * Establish a safe environment where questions are welcomed * Demonstrate to learners why the training is relevant to them * Understand the process by which adults learn * Place real learning within the context of the traditional training cycle: assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2003-06-19
As someone completely new to training this book was very helpful. It has several useful forms and other things that can be copied and easily used. It may be a bit basic for someone who has been in training for a long time tho.
A Very Helpful Handbook.......2001-04-25
This book would be good for someone, who needs guidance in the process of developing an effective training session. The authors' Shelila W. Furjanic and Laurie A. Trotman separated this training handbook into two parts. Part one focuses on the training process and part two on the LEARN process. In each part, it has many examples and samples to use as a guide, when developing a training session. It also provides valuable information that is a good reference, for a new trainer. Overall, this book is an excellent guide to anyone who is interested in developing a training program. It covers everything that a person needs to know, about the training process in one book. I have learned so much from reading this, that I am sure that it is going to be a very good reference for me in my future, career endeavors. This is more than a book; it is a handbook, in which I would recommend to anybody who is new to the training process.
A new approach.......2000-07-13
I am very impressed with this easy to read and effective book on developing a training program within the organization. From figuring out whether or not training will solve a problem to creative strategies to get the audience thinking and involved, this book helped me make a mole hill out of a mountain!
Complete with easy to use forms and handouts, I didn't need to purchase any other book but this one! Pretty good when you think of all the money that is spent on developing such programs.....!
A Must Read for Anyone Conducting Organization Training.......2000-04-17
This book will have a substantial impact in any organization that really wants to ensure trainees remember and apply what they have learned during a training session when they get back to their job. It provides an innovative and practical approach to organizational training. All the tools you need to identify, design and administer the training are included in this book. It is packed full with guidelines, models, checklists, forms, templates and other easy-to-use tools. I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in conducting organization training.

A wonderful book, but a bit too many pictures.......1997-02-04
As a reader of many of Arthur C. Clarkes books, I just had to get this one too.
I love the topic of this book. And to see how with available technics it would be possible to develop a "Garden on Mars" is very amazing to read about.
Unluckily, in my opinion, Clarke put a bit too much work into playing around with this picture creating tool. I am a computer techie and I know how much fun it can be to work with stuff like that.
But a view less pictures would have worked just the same.
Book Description
Organic Chemistry is unusual among market-leading texts in that it exists only as a brief text and is specifically designed for a one-semester short course in organic chemistry. Its heavy emphasis on applications, increased coverage of basic concepts, thorough problem-solving pedagogy, and excellent problem sets and worked examples address the specific needs of students in this course.
- The Eleventh Edition features a new interior design that makes text material more accessible to both students and instructors.
- "A Closer Look At" features require students to use resources on the Web to expand concepts in the text, applying text content more directly to real-world examples.
- The HM ClassPrep instructor CD-ROM provides valuable supplemental content in one convenient, portable product. The CD-ROM includes a test bank, Instructor's Resource Manual, and PowerPoint slides of all line art from the text and animations from the student CD-ROM.
- All texts will be shrinkwrapped with a new student CD-ROM. Organized by chapter, this CD-ROM contains approximately 30 animations of three-dimensional structures that students can view from various angles. Review questions follow each of the animations. Annotations in the text guide students and instructors to the appropriate structure or animation on the CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
for a chemistry book, it's pretty decent.......2006-12-12
I'm not a big fan of chemistry or anything, but this was actually a pretty useful book. It is easy to read, has lots of examples, and systematically goes through each type of organic molecule you might encounter and tells you how to recognize one, name it, what it's chemical properties are, some info about where they are found and how they're used, and how they are made, broken down, and how they react with other compounds.
One thing that is lacking is how a lot of the chemistry actually works sometimes. They might just show the reactants and the products and expect you to memorize it, rather than learning the process behind it. But, I guess that's part of the limitations of it being a 'short course'.....
Book Description
Contains solutions to both in-text and end-of-chapter problems with an explanation of the answers. For each chapter, the guide provides a summary, learning objectives, and a summary of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms. Review problems on synthesis and 100 multiple-choice questions offer students additional problem-solving practice.

serious one-semester O-chem text.......2004-06-22
This textbook is suitable to be used in a serious one-semester introductory organic chemistry course. Its explanations of concepts are generally clear. It is too tough to be used a GOB text unless you omit 50% of the materials.

Macroevolution is the interesting part of evolution: the rise and fall of major groups like dinosaurs or horses, the development of whole new organs (like eyes) and ways of life (like pollination). Such changes are difficult to study, and harder still to prove. Carl Zimmer looks at metamorphoses across the boundary between land and sea: how fish learned to walk on land, and how whales went back to the ocean. "The story of each of these transformations hides its own unexpected details, as startling as the skyward eyes that sat on top of our ancestors' heads or the delicate toes that turned up in the equation of a whale." Zimmer's account is accurate yet lively, covering recent discoveries in taxonomy and dolphin intelligence, embryology and eight-toed fossil fish. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Testing the land.......2006-09-12
The shimmering interface between water and air has been a stage for some of evolution's most amazing feats. In this expertly written book Zimmer examines how nature has coped with the challenge of evolving across this formidable barrier -- first as ancient fish evolved into tetrapods, and later when certain animals re-evolved to return to the sea. Along the route we get to meet the key fossils and paleontologists that have contributed to our understanding today. Zimmer includes plenty of details, including a lucid explanation of how changes in the hox gene complex allowed evolution of the limbs and hands of land animals, and a detailed recapitulation of the step-by-step evolution of a Mesonychid land animal into the majestic whales we know today. Unfortunately the book is stretched a bit thin to cover so many topics, and ends up feeling like a tasty appetizer for something more substantial. If you have a lazy afternoon at the library, try opening a copy of the peerless work by Colbert and Morales: Evolution of the Vertebrates.

Shrinking Fossil Gaps?.......2001-09-29
Although critical of, and no fan of, Darwin's theory, I found this book a significant and interesting counter-challenge important for keeping up with the vast amounts of new research that do belie some of the standard criticisms of Darwin's theory, behind enemy lines speed reading. Part of the problem in the Darwin debate is the spiritual-material dilemma that makes any challenge to selectionism seem metaphysical, this closing on the 'species question' with miracle mongering. But that was never as such the point, and the facts of evolution being filled in, still with theoretical preconceptions to be sure, by new discoveries are essential updates for all parties to all arguments. This work is therefore a good curve ball for any Darwin critic, but still, I fear, no finally conclusive demonstration of the theory, beyond the exciting facts, and these include, for example, one of the thorniest transitions, that of the whales.
Good to keep an eye on the facts, and these 'succcesses' can be misleading, so watch out.
By the author of the PBS series evolution.

Awesome!!!!.......2001-08-03
This book does a remarkable job of covering two major transitions in evolution. First the transition from fish to the first terrestrial tetrapods and secondly from terrestrial mammals to whales. A kind of out of the water and back in scenario.
The book covers the transitional specimens that have been found to date very well and goes over most of the difficulties of changing from one extreme environment to the other.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in evolution.

I've proudly got my yearly goals hanging on the `frig; numbers 1 through 10. 1. Fall in true love with life partner.
2. Don't forget their eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, lingering childhood traumas, live in parents, substance abuse and financial disasters.
3. Get these stories published to save lives.
4-9 Blah, blah, blah
10. Take a cold shower, don't call her back. Who ever planned to be dating in mid-life? This is not at all how I thought my life would be. I'd love to be having a well planned evening at home, pleasant dinner, soft music, love of my life snuggling with me on the couch. Hardly; I am caught in this female vortex, with no way out. We've got to take life and mid-life dating with a great gulp of humor and a there's a someone out there for me attitude. I've been trying, met some great people along the way and a few sad cases. There's some truth in these stories, you'll have to figure out where. When you get done with this little book, have a glass of wine and give her a call.

Who Ever Planned to be Dating in Mid-Life?.......2005-08-30
First time author, Givme Wine's collection of short stories, is for all singles and those in relationships. These stories will make you laugh, cry a little, hold your lover tight, or head for the door. There's a good deal of poignancy and smile-out-loud times, contained inside this book. Givme, however, may just have a knack at making bad choices. Consider this, from "Coronado Cosmo: "...If your girlfriend goes to NYC, gets drunk and ends up in some stranger's hotel room...dump her right NOW." In another story, "Long Liner," Wine's naivete shows through in a conversation with his friend, Linda: "...You seen Helen, how is she doing?" "Why she and Sally are so happy...they've moved in together and are passionately in love." I nearly dropped my pint. "Do you mean to tell me...Helen is gay," I gasped. "Well sure stupid." Linda seemed amazed.
Givme Wine just can't catch a break. And, that's too bad because his bio states he is, among other pursuits, an avid surfer! He's a likeable, if somewhat hapless character and you'll find yourself cheering him on and hoping he finally recognizes/gets what he wants.
This book of short stories belongs in your backpack; in your bathroom; by your bed; and definitely on your list of books that reveal and celebrate the humor of life, love, sex and other human foibles.
