Book Description
From the editor of the most influential biotech newsletter comes the most comprehensive investment guide on biotechnology.
Biotechnology is indisputably one of the fastest-growing and most promising industries. Virtually immune to swings in the economic cycles, biotech stocks continue to perform steadily as high-tech stocks lose their steam.
In Biotech Investing, Jim McCamant offers proven strategies and savvy advice on how to capitalize on the unprecedented opportunities in this high-potential sector. Written by a recognized authority, this book dissects biotech business models from start-up to IPO and discusses in detail the most important factors that affect biotech research. Comprehensive in scope, it looks at the best and worst biotech contenders, discusses all the most newsworthy developments in the field, and shows how they translate into business success or failure. It outlines simple criteria for choosing the best biotech stocks and for understanding the sometimes complicated dynamics of this sector.
Customer Reviews:
Science good, investment insight bad.......2004-05-19
Disappointing. I guess this book is one example where the cover says it all; next time I see a book on Biotech investing, I want to see a dollar sign on the jacket.
Sure, I got the biotech bit, but where was the insight into investing. Nothing really hit me. I started reading the book not knowing how to invest in biotech; I ended the same way.
On a positive note, I did like the writing style.
Excellent Advice!.......2002-11-02
WOW! Such a dense topic, so carefully written. I am the wiser for this book. Thank you for presenting this so clearly.
Guide, but not an *Investors* guide.......2002-10-09
I picked up this book with two kinds of expectations. One that McCamant would give me the "lay of the land" of the Biotech space, the competing markets and the key companies. The other, that he would provide deep insight (a la Peter Lynch) on an investment method. On the first count, the book does a reasonable job. On the second count, it is very disappointing. Most of the investment rules are obvious and generic. The investment web links are outdated.

Customer Reviews:
Biotech Investor.......2007-01-09
Very good book on the unique concepts of biotech investing. It covers all areas and would be useful for beginners or advanced investors.
Well structured and interesting.......2003-09-17
An excellent introduction to biotech investing.
Tom Abate is a good writer and knows his subject. I thought this book was written in a guarded, pragmatic way that suits the reader's purpose (presumably investment). The dustjacket shouts of a 'coming boom' but the author can be forgiven for what is basically puffery. Abate is clearly arguing for a period of drawn out growth fuelled by demographics and accelerating technical progress - not an imminent goldrush.
I gained a number of insights I consider valuable:
-An understanding of the mechanism of FDA approval and how companies manage themselves around it.
-The fluid business models of existing companies.
-The way in which institutional fund managers seem to advocate active trading over a 'buy and hold' approach to biotech portfolios (this surprised me).
Timely, relevant and convincingly argued. I'd probably buy another book by this author.
A strong dose of reality to the often hype driven sector.......2003-04-24
Tom Abate has been covered the Biotech industry for the San Francisco Chronicle for years. It shows. He brings a strong dose of reality to this hype driven sector.
Who this book is for:
-Independent investors willing to spend a lot of time doing research
-People looking for a current industry overview
-Job seekers
The Good:
-Extremely well written
-Up to Date (as of spring 2003)
-Knowledgeable - several small tidbits of data pay for the book by themselves
The Bad:
-Will quickly go out of date. For example the Appendix contains a list of firm websites and market caps; Market Caps change - companies disappear.
-Not enough FDA information. This should have been a separate chapter covering the FDA approval process in detail as well as other countries' processes.
-Too much basic investment advice: firm valuation/free cash flow/ portfolio theory / investor risk profile. Other books do a better, more thorough job of this.
-No bibliography
I gave it 5 stars because if you are going to invest in biotech the book will more than pay for itself.

The Biotech Investor: How to Profit from the Coming Boom in Biotechnology
ASIN: 0471479144 |
Book Description
The biotech revolution is here to stay, and no one can afford to ignore it.
Dramatic advances in genetics over the last two decades are transforming the world and polarizing public opinion in much the same way as Darwin's theory of natural selection did in the late 1800s. While the 'green' biotech industry (genetically modified crops) has suffered recently from vociferous criticism, 'red' biotech (genetically engineered medicine) is going from strength to strength. Top-selling biotech drugs are galvanizing the pharmaceutical industry as biotech players create new markets. Greatly improved treatments for common ailments such as arthritis are producing enormous financial rewards, while many companies are focusing on the 'Holy Grail' of medicine: better treatments - and perhaps even cures - for cancer.
Medical biotech is a high-risk business. Millions of dollars are expended on compounds that may not make it through the rigorous approval process of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). It also takes time. A drug may take years to make it from discovery to the marketplace, and the majority fails to pass all the hurdles on the way. Public opinion and legislation are also unpredictable factors; the enthusiasm for the "race" to sequence the human genome is countered by fears about eugenic and ownership issues.
This book is a collection of interviews with leading biotech scientists and industrialists who talk candidly about the risks and rewards of commercial biotechnology.
Features interviews with:
- Faraz Naqvi (Dresdner RCM Biotechnology Fund)
- Kari Stefansson (deCODE Genetics)
- Jean Deleage (Alta Partners)
- Ed Kania (OneLiberty Ventures)
- Alan Kingsman (Oxford Biomedica)
- Noubar Afeyan (NewcoGen Group)

- Ian Gowrie-Smith (SkyePharma)

Customer Reviews:
great foundation for aspiring biotech investors.......2004-08-03
This book provides the average investor with a solid foundation in their pursuit of successful biotech investing.
Most investors invest in biotech stocks based on media exposure and momentum driven markets. There is a glaring lack of any sort of structure to their research or position management. Dr. Duarte's book lays the groundwork for investors to establish a workable system of identifying and managing promising investments. By incorporating risk management techniques (technical analysis), he has provided a dose of reality to balance the inherent optimism the motivates biotech investors. This is crucial as it prevents the blow ups that destroy portfolios as well as investor confidence.
Give this one a miss.......2004-05-17
The book looks great, but it is definitely not worth reading. If you are into technical analysis, you may derive some use from the text. However, I don't see why you need a book devoted to biotech for investing on this basis.
There's a weak chapter on the science (high school level at a stretch); a discussion on investment basics which misses the mark. The markets chapter is fine, but the review of major drug companies is weak. I just found the analysis of the biotech industry to be too weak. There's simply too little analysis and too much opinion.
I have no idea why there's a discussion on mutual funds. Unless the particular vehicle is a sector fund, the manager won't start investing in biotech until the price has appreciated. By then, it's too late.
The MD and CNBC credentials lead me to believe that this book would provide some dynamic insight or a systematic way for cutting through they hype. Sadly, it did neither.
Synthetic Simplicity.......2001-06-28
This book is not just about biotech investing. Duarte, a technical analyst as well as a physician uses biotechs as a model for approaching the market. The book has all the shortcomings other reviewers warn you of: it's painfully redundant, incomplete and simplistic. But it does offer a consistent approach to stock investing IF you supplement it with other material. It also lists some neat web sites.
VERY BASIC.......2001-06-22
Don't waste your money, very basic and not very informative. Very generic!
Finally! A book that helps the average investor in biotech.......2001-06-16
Since I'm not interested in being a PhD this seems like the perfect book for me and more than likely for the average investor. The thing I really like about this book is that it helps me know how to make money from the coming biotech explosion.
I don't care how this stuff works nearly as much as how to build my net worth by investing. On that point, this is THE book. It has just about everything-understandable explanation of the industry, how to tell which companies are likely to be leaders, and even a reference database.
If I had a book this good at the beginning of the 'high tech' explosion I could have retired already. I would have understood enough about Oracle, Cisco, and all that lot to make even more money. I don't intend to be on the back half of the next wave. I give this book five stars. Thanks a million, $$$, to the author.

Book Description
Many scientific papers and popular articles have been written on the topic of space tourism, describing everything from expected market sizes to the rules of 3-dimensional microgravity football. But what would it actually feel like to be a tourist in space, to be hurled into orbit on top of a controlled explosion, to float around in a spacecraft, and to be able to look down on your hometown from above the atmosphere? Space tourism is not science fiction anymore, Michel van Pelt tells us, but merely a logical step in the evolution of space flight. Space is about to be opened up to more and more people, and the drive behind this is one of the most powerful economic forces: tourism. Van Pelt describes what recreational space travel might look like, and explains the required space technology, the medical issues, astronaut training, and the possibilities of holidays to destinations far, far away. This is a book for everyone who has ever dreamed of traveling to space: a dream which, according to van Pelt, may not be so far from becoming a reality.

An enthusiastic guide for your first trip.......2005-05-18
This book is for everyone who wants to be like Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth but doesn't have the millions to spend yet. Because this book tells what it must have felt like for them to be genuine space tourists, and at the same time gives all potential space tourists good hopes for regular affordable trips to space in the near future. It is enthusiastically written, with lots of details about what each space tourist should know and be prepared for, with the occassional twink of the eye, or a critical look where that is needed.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-07-03
As an experienced ceramic artist, it's nice to be reminded, that we are never too old to learn
In this book Kathy Triplett shares many of her skills, what I also enjoy is seeing the works of some other outstanding ceramic artist
Honestly, after seeing this book, you will be off to the ceramic supply store, and stocking up on clay & glazes
Comprehensive Ceramics Book.......2006-07-19
Through setting up, producing simple pieces to attempting more complex projects 'Handbuilt Ceramics' is an excellent guide. There are many examples of simple and basic ceramics pieces for inspiration along with practical advice. Each of the projects has step by step photographs and clear written explanations. I have found it useful and interesting.
Very useful.......2005-10-07
This is one of the most useful and well-done ceramics books I've found. It strikes a good balance between basic information (i.e., theory) and practical application (in the form of example projects). It has hundreds of good color photos: some of finished work (to stimulate creative ideas), and others showing step-by-step techniques being applied. The text is well-written and full of useful tips.
Inspiring.......2002-10-23
This book is wonderful. The writing is clear and concise, the project instructions have enough detail to give you confidence for execution and experimentation.
The photos are good quality and inspirational. In the short time I have owned this, I have used it in adult and children's classes. For smaller children who want to rush to the wheel, the book gives excellent examples of what can be accomplished with handbuilding.
The book lit a creative fire for new 6 year-old potters and this old, experienced potter.
Excellent book for both experienced and new potters.......2002-03-18
I turned to this book after being "stuck" with wheel throwing--I just can't think of anything to make on the wheel that appeals to me right now. The pictures and techniques have freshened my creativity and inspiration, and are leading me to explore new techniques and develop new skills that I will eventually combine with wheel-thrown pieces. My favorite aspect of the book is the variety of styles that are shown in the beautiful pictures--there really is something for everyone in here. The directions are comprehensive and clear. Thank you, Kathy, for bringing back the excitement I felt when I first started working with clay. An amazing book! I'm not allowed to come to class without it, and other class members have made trips to the book store to pick up their own copy.

Book Description
This book serves as a unique handbook that answers over a thousand of the potential combinations of basic variables or problems that can occur from up-stream to down-stream equipment. Guidelines are provided for maximizing processing efficiency and operating at the lowest possible cost. It explains in a clear, concise and simple format the various extrusion processes that produce different commodity and engineered plastic products. Extruding Plastics's practical approach provides, for the novice and experienced personnel, a methodology on extrusion advancements and trends. This leads to a streamlining of processing lines by anticipating problems, which causes them, how to eliminate them, and/or how to take corrective action. The content and index are arranged to provide a natural progression from simple to complex situations. It correlates materials, equipment, process controls, product requirements, and people. Readers who will find this book invaluable include: those already extruding and desiring to obtain additional information for their line; those processing or extruding plastics for the first time; those considering going into another extrusion process; those obtaining information about employing the design of various products more efficiently performance-wise and cost-wise; those in new venture groups, materials development, and/or market development; those in disciplines such as non-plastics manufacturers, engineers, designers, quality control, financial, and management; and those requiring a comprehensive introduction on extrusion.

From the author: It is important to evaluate the deformation process accurately in analyzing mixing in extrusion. This paper discusses numerical methods to determine a representative deformation measure over the entire cross-section of the extruder channel accurately and efficiently. Two different numerical methods are introduced to determine a deformation measure over the entire cross-section of the extruder channel efficiently: i) the first method based on the mapping sequence of the deformation gradient tensor; and ii) the second method which does not require the evaluation of velocity gradient fields. These two methods are applied to the extrusion process of a single-screw extruder and are compared with respect to their numerical accuracy. It is found that trajectories of fluid particles are difficult to obtain especially near the screw flight and barrel surface, which causes numerical inaccuracies with respect to obtaining a deformation measure. In this paper an inverse mapping method is employed to overcome such a numerical problem. For computational efficiency and accuracy, the second method was found to be more powerful compared with the first one, especially when there are singular points as in an extruder channel.

Book Description
Solid State Physics: An Accessible Introduction for Undergraduates presents a straightforward treatment of solid state physics for undergraduate physics students as well as materials science and electrical engineering students. The writing style is akin to a popular science book, but the required rigor is not lost. The author emphasizes both the technological applications of the physics and the multi-disciplinary nature of scientific research. The text includes journalistic-style accounts of recent research and covers topics, such as bonding in solids, amorphous materials, polymers, diffraction, lattice vibrations and phonons, free electron models of electrical conduction, energy band formation, simple band theory, superconductivity, dielectrics, and magnetism.
