Book Description
Welcome to the bully pulpit where opinions fly but common sense rules. Here’s where you’ll find straight talk about the most pressing issues of the day, all delivered in the trademark commonsense style of one of America’s most popular and admired television news anchors. Always resisting the political label that attempts to place people in one ideological camp or another, Greta Van Susteren speaks from the mind and the heart, not as a liberal or a conservative, but as a right-thinking, sensible citizen. “Our country is at a critical juncture,” she writes, and “too many of us are caught up in old definitions of left and right that no longer apply. If I favor the death penalty in some cases, does that make me right-wing? If I think hate crimes legislation is stupid, does that make me a conservative? If I happen to like and enjoy Ozzy Osbourne and have him on my show, does that make me a liberal? And if I believe that corporations should be held accountable if their products harm citizens and they should be subject to the rulings of a jury—ditto for doctors who commit medical malpractice—does that make me a lefty trial lawyer?”
Here’s more of Greta in her own words:
On the military: Liberty isn’t free. As a nation, we must provide for the men and women who put their lives on the line for us. That means good pay, adequate funding for defense, and our heartfelt support. Vietnam was a very long time ago. We Baby Boomers have to wake up and realize that today’s military is a different military from the one we grew up with, and we are fighting a very different war. Patriotism is not a conservative or a liberal thing. Patriotism, as far as I am concerned, is the duty and obligation of every American.
On the Supreme Court: There should be a litmus test for Supreme Court and federal court judges, and that test should be their opinion about allowing public access to court proceedings. Let cameras inside the courthouse, or at least allow an audio feed to radio. What are they hiding?
On the death penalty: It should be legal and available to courts and juries . . . but it should be used extremely rarely, and only when we are absolutely certain that a fair trial has taken place.
On how you look: It’s your business and nobody else’s. Your looks and your life are not a democracy—not everybody gets a vote. Make your appearance and your choices a totalitarian regime—you are the boss.
On fun: It isn’t a curse word. It’s actually quite serious business, as it makes the hard times livable and the sad times bearable. Fun should be part of a work environment, too. Stuffed shirts and snobs who can’t stop and laugh at themselves should be banished!
In Greta’s company you’re guaranteed to get a fresh dose of common sense and a good hearty rant on many of the most important issues we face today. One more guarantee: you’ll have some good fun while you’re at it.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
"Give everybody a chance".......2005-11-24
We've all seen our share of "talking heads".However,I always liked Greta, felt she was different and when I saw this book,I was hoping to find what separates her from the run of the mill.I was not disappointed and found that she was her own self and had well thought out opinions on many subjects.
I have found her strong asset is in putting her personal views ,or even worse some agenda, aside and asking good, fair questions and allowing the guest give their answer without being cut off when the answer doesn't suit the questioner.
It was also enlightning to read why she left CNN and I found her reasons were much the same as mine when I left CNN and opted for FOXas a listener.
Greta summed it up with:"I believe in good strong aggressive debate".
Greta was described as a no-spin lady by Bill O'Reilly and I certainly think he got it right.
Who edited this book?.......2005-08-09
I am a GVS fan, and I watch On The Record as often as I can. However, an accomplished lawyer/commentator does not a writer make. This book was not edited,(well or otherwise), and it shows in the first few pages when you realize that Greta has overused the word FUN....over, and over, and over. It is bland and boring. The fact that she had assistance in writing it is even more of an insult.
Check it out of your local library-or skip it altogether.
Easy read, but not all that interesting.......2004-03-08
This book is exactly as advertised - Greta's opinions on a variety of issues. While I may agree with her on a lot of issues, I'm not sure why I should care.
I learned a little about tort reform, was creeped out by her section on the death penalty and found the CNN slams a little annoying by the end.
Overall, this was an easy read but not all that interesting.
excellent book.......2003-12-19
This is a must read! If you love Greta on FNC, then you will equally love her book.
Much Like Her Show - Informative and Entertaining.......2003-11-25
Maybe I'm biased but I've always liked Greta Van Susteren. She is one of those people that when she is on television, you are drawn to watch her. I think I feel that way because she is bright, articulate, and can engage an interview subject and challenge them without attacking them. Moreover, she can display a sense of humor and seems to have fun.
This book is much like she is on television. It's concise and to the point and most normal people should be able to read the whole thing in a few hours.
My only quibble with the book is that the title seems a bit misleading. While Greta does weigh in on a number of important topics such as patriotism, the death penalty, her plastic surgery, cable news, corporate ethics and even professional sports, she is smart enough to temper her views. She rarely jumps on the soap box to take hard stances on most of the issues.
Still I enjoy the book because in what she does write, she reveals more of herself. That works to her advantage because the same appeal she demonstrates on television comes through in the book. This is especially true in the last chapter of the book that provides some examples of the e-mails she has traded with viewers of her show.
This book won't go down as one of the most important books of our day but if you like Greta, it's worth your time.

Book Description
A former lawyer and celebrated crime writer has compiled this vastly entertaining collection of anecdotes, drawing from the reminiscences of lawyers and criminals, witnesses and clerks. The law has a great hold over the imagination of the public: it is all-powerful, yet its servants can be
fallible, and it is the foibles as well as the authority of judges and other legal practitioners that make this collection so enjoyable. Edward Carson cross-examining Oscar Wilde, Clarence Darrow defending J.T. Scopes for teaching the theory of evolution: these are perhaps the best known of many
celebrated legal battles retold in these pages. Of a less dramatic nature is the story of the letter received by Judge Benjamin Cardozo: "I read in the newspapers that you are a liberal judge. Will you send me ten dollars as I'm really very hard up." The entries are arranged alphabetically by
the name of their principal subject; headnotes set the context and describe the subject's occupation (i.e. "judge", "attorney general"). A useful note explains the differences between the British, European, and American legal systems.

Book Description
Constellations are not new to astronomy. Even before the era of printing, patterns of stars have been recognized by humans and their histories have been passed on from generation to generation, culture to culture. This book is the ultimate constellation reference book. Finally, a book exists that brings together a variety of information about constellations, including: the size, visibility, and relative brightness of all eighty-eight constellations; former locations of extinct constellations; the number of visible stars in each constellation; and more. Using tables, this information is presented in the first part of the book so that constellations can be readily compared and a general view of them developed. In the second part of the book, each constellation is taken in turn, with a star chart and map illustrating the associated celestial figure, supported by a comprehensive list of essential properties. This highly illustrated volume provides the most complete reference to date covering all aspects of the constellations and will be helpful for astronomers, both amateur and professional, educators and science writers.
Customer Reviews:
If your just learning, try a different book........2000-02-03
If you're just getting started, this is not the book for you. It's a little deeper than I expected. Still a good book, but stay clear unless you're already experienced in this topic.
Practical uses of the book.......1997-08-17
As a serious amateur and frequent lecturer, I have found the Cambridge Guide to the Constellations serves multiple purposes. As a guide for understanding the boundaries and key features of the constellations, it has no equal. It provides significant detail in concise useable capsules. This is exactly what is needed when planning a night of observing or a lecture to any audience. In addition, the author has provided us with numerous significant facts, lists, and historical anecdotes which can enrich our understanding and provide quick material for lectures or special presentations. I rarely plan a talk without first referring to this book. It will be a ready reference to all astronomers for many years
A must-have book for constellation information.......1997-07-11
This book lists all the constellations and tells a little about each one of them, such as its location in the sky and where it can be seen.
It also has many lists, like the brightest stars, the closest stars, Ptolemy's constellations, meteor shower dats, the navigational stars, Biblical references to stars and constellations and much, much more.
I run a planetarium and this book has provided me with more practical knowledge about the sky than almost any other single book in my library (which is extensive).
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning more about the sky and having a multitude of handy reference facts at your fingertips

Book Description
The Cambridge Guide to Stargazing with Your Telescope is an indispensable guide to telescopes and how to choose the right one for your needs. It gives straighforward explanations of how they work, and how to progress from first-time user to skilled observer. It gives practical help for setting up and using any telescope, and provides lists of objects to look at with different sizes of telescope, from both town and country, including the Sun, Moon and planets, comets, asteroids, star clusters, variable and double stars, supernovae, nebulae and galaxies. Aimed principally at newcomers to astronomy, of all ages, this book describes the full range of telescopes that are internationally available, with examples of objects to observe taken from both hemispheres, appropriate for all observing conditions. It also gives advice about accessories, such as eye-pieces and filters, plus suggestions for photography through the telescope and choice of camera and film type.
Customer Reviews:
Nifty little guide to buy before you buy your first scope.......2000-12-06
This is an appealing digest-sized guide that tells you everything you need to know before buying your first telescope. It presents the technical information you need to understand in plain English.
What's more, it's profusely illustrated and up to date. It has info on the latest scopes and the advantages and disadvantages of the different types (refractor vs. reflector etc.).
So why didn't it earn the fifth star? I wish the pages were larger. It's designed along the lines of a field guide but you're not going to read this book in the field. You're going to read it in your easy chair amidst a stack of Astronomy and Sky and Telescope magazines. In that venue a more traditional book size would be more appropriate.
Don't let that put you off though. If you're contemplating buying a good scope and you don't have a knowledgeable friend to lean on for advice, buy this book.

Book Description
In this book devoted entirely to the mathematics of long-range aperiodic order the reader will find survey and research articles on the major areas of mathematics and mathematical physics that are emerging in this new field, including tilings, discrete geometry, diffraction and harmonic analysis, self-similarity and symmetry, non-crystallographic root systems, the cut and project method, number theoretical considerations, aperiodic Ising models and Schrödinger operators.
Book Description
The Neanderthals provide a surprising mirror for modern-day humanity. They belonged to our evolutionary group and lived like the Cro-Magnons, our ancestors, did - worshipping, socializing, and hunting. The struggle between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons lasted thousands of years. The Cro-Magnons were not biologically fit for extreme cold weather, but their ingenuity allowed them to settle down, band together, and survive. In this tale of life, death, and the awakening of human awareness, Juan Luis Arsuaga, Spain's most celebrated paleoanthropologist, depicts the dramatic struggle between two clashing species, of which only one survives.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2005-05-11
Arsuaga focuses on discoveries in his native Spain, and they are many. His hypothesis is that Neanderthals had the brains to be as intelligent as we, but lacked the physical equipment to develop sophisticated language.
The author ranges afield into areas of natural history and biology that give the book a depth beyond its title. I'm reminded, in a very small way, of course, of The Golden Bough, which set out to explore one cultural artifact and wound up as an encyclopedia of cultural anthropology.
I like Arsuaga's informal style and his fair-minded exposition of points of view that differ from his own. While the book is not a page-turner for the average reader, it is so for anyone seriously interested in its subject.
Interesting topic, poorly organized book........2004-09-20
I was disappointed by this book. It reads like the transcript of a university lecture given by a bright and enthusiastic professor. That said, the author's frequent asides and digressions make it difficult to follow his narrative.
It is about who the first thinkers were..........2004-01-13
The book is very detailed and very interesting, but while it has lots of information about Neanderthals, and they are an important part of the book, much of it IS about the subtitle, In Search of the First Thinkers. When did we go from gestures to language? When did we stop making the same stone tool, again and again, and start making different tools for different needs? When did we stop thinking about how to hunt down an animal which was right in front of us and start planning out how to get food in the future? The author uses Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons to ask 'Why did one win over the other?' Was it language? What does art have to do with it? Maybe it had to do with the development of better tools? And what do bigger brains have to do with it if Neanderthals had the biggest ones?
It is as much history as it is philosophy.
The Neanderthal's Necklace.......2003-09-26
I most definitely do not recommend this book if the reader wishes to learn something about the Neanderthals. Actually, there is virtually nothing in the book about the Neanderthals and their culture, but there is a lot of information on the late Pleistocene environments of the Iberian Peninsula. This book is mostly natural history, not archaeology. I do not recommend it.
review.......2003-09-02
Great. It goes through all the steps of human development "from ape to man". Very easy to understand for non experts. The Neanderthal chapter is the most interesting one. I recommend it to people who are not experts on the issue but love the topic and want to keep themselves on the loop.
