* A system that originated in Saxon England, frankpledge was a promise of good conduct given to a sovereign by a group of ten freeholders, or tithing. If a member of the tithing committed an offense, the others acted as bail to ensure that he would appear in court. If the offender fled, the other members would be penalized. First published in 1910, Morris' detailed history remains the standard work on this subject.

Paradoxer Gone Bad.......2007-01-03
Around 25 years ago I read a book titled "Somebody Else is on the Moon." The author claimed he saw all kinds of buildings, bridges, and construction equipment in photographs of the moon, taken by astronomers. The book contained a few dozen photographs where these artifacts could be seen, but I was never able to see them. I wrote a TRS80 game based upon the book, and then wrote a letter to the author describing the game: he wrote back giving me permission to sell the game.
Even though I was 16 years old at the time I realized the author was "seeing" what was not actually there: the artifacts he claimed to see were not and are not there. Later, in high school, I learned about Professor Lowell believing he saw massive "canal works" on Mars, which was also a figment of hius imagination: Leonard was therefore in good company when he wrote this book reporting upon his imaginary artifacts. I remember feeling sorry for the author, realizing he had deluded himself. (Yes, I still have his letter.)
Sadly, there is nothing within this book of any redeeming value. It is not entertaining; it is not informative; it is one long plea for the reader to see that which IS NOT THERE.
A Classic .......2006-11-18
I borrowed this book from the library and found it interesting and surprising. Certainly, this was a groundbreaking theory at the time it was put forward. Although I could see tracks and trails with "things" sitting at the end, and odd shapes inside some craters, I could not see much of what the author was describing. This was because the most spectacular photos had been torn from the book!! No doubt the pictures had been removed by 'Men in Black'. To the author's credit, the book is still quoted by contemporary proponents of the theory.
Mining Operations on the Moon?!.......2006-10-20
I found much of this book surprisingly convincing. In most of the photos I couldn't see anything that struck me as out of the ordinary, but there did seem to be "X drones" at work on the rim of King Crater and an artificial rolling object on the floor of Vitello Crater and some parallel ribbing in Triesnecker Crater. There also seems to be some kind of ladder in one photo down the side of a farside crater photographed by Apollo 8, with treadmarks on this crater's rim and floor. The back cover of the book states that the author "studied thousands of NASA photographs, talked candidly with dozens of officials from NASA and listened to hours of astronauts' tapes."
In addition to this book, see also The Expanding Case for the UFO by M.K. Jessup and page 352 of "Wake Up Down There!", which contains a reproduction of NASA image IV-190-H3, in which three apparently square craters are visible. (This image can also be found by entering in quotation marks "those square craters on the moon" into a search engine.)
Classic crackpot........2006-01-29
This book is a real classic example of crackpot thinking. Leonard picks NASA photos to show that "someone else is on the moon". But the amazing structures he sees in these photos are just at the edge of resolution. Alas, he never mentions that NASA has images (publically available) of the exact same areas but taken much closer to the ground. They show nothing unusual. Leonard's book is a wonderful example of how crackpots and pseudoscientists refuse to examine evidence that shows their crazy theories to be wrong.
This book changed my life.......2003-01-16
George H. Leonard's work definitely changed my life. Better, it changed my way of considering humour. I still can't remember the innumerable times I've spent the entire evening rolling on the floor with my brother, laughing, both desperately trying for hours to identificate the "T-structures" and "bridges" Mr.Leonard was writing about. And, well, pretending to see them, at last.
A book that can't be missed. But prepare a good amount of towels to wipe your eyes from tears.
Cheers

Book Description
Though the format evolved in the first edition remains intact, relevant new additions have been inserted at appropriate places in various chapters of the book. Also included are a number of sample and study problems at the end of each chapter to illustrate the approach to problem solving that involve translations of sets of spectra into chemical structures. Written primarily to stimulate the interest of students in spectroscopy and make them aware of the latest developments in this field, this book begins with a general introduction to electromagnetic radiation and molecular spectroscopy. In addition to the usual topics on IR, UV, NMR and Mass spectrometry, it includes substantial material on the currently useful techniques such as FT-IR, FT-NMR 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR, GC/MS, FAB/MS, Tendem and Negative Ion Mass Spectrometry for students engaged in advanced studies. Finally it gives a detailed account on Optical Rotatory Dispersion (ORD) and Circular Dichroism (CD).

Book Description
-- American Scientist
In this volume, the product of decades of study and research, the world's foremost geneticist surveys the major developments in what is emerging as the most important single area of scientific inquiry in the twentieth century: biological theory of evolution in particular.
Noting that the theory of evolution in biology is more than a century old, Dr. Dobzhansky points out that it is nevertheless only in recent times that our knowledge of its physical basis as well as our understanding of its dynamics has progressed greatly. Yet, he notes, new problems have replaced the older ones at the forefront of scientific inquiry, problems which require entirely new approaches. It is to these manifold and exciting new questions that the author brings a lifetime of experience.
Throughout, his goal is to create not a summary of all the available literature, nor a professional book written only for the scientific community, but rather a presentation of basic ideas, accompanied by the indispensable references which would enable interested readers to pursue the matter further. The book has been purposely kept short to enable it to be read as a whole, and above all, it has been written in a manner which will hold the attention as well as inform both the general reader and the professionally concerned scientist.

Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual: (PDM)
ASIN: 0898627958 |
Book Description
this important new work connects evolutionary biological concepts to modern psychoanalytic theory and the clinical encounter. Synthesizing their years of experience in the practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, the authors provide a comparative psychoanalytic map of current theoretical controversies and a new way of deconstructing the hidden assumptions that underlie Freudian, Ego Psychological, Kleinian, Object Relational, Self Psychological, and Interpersonal theories. In so doing, they provide a new vantage point from which to integrate competing models into a larger picture that more fully embraces the many facets of human nature. Moreover, they offer clinicians a new framework with which to understand and respond to the inevitable paradoxes and conflicts that arise in the therapeutic relationship.
Customer Reviews:
Psychoanalysis & Evolutionary Biology: Read it!.......1997-12-09
BOOK REVIEW The Adaptive Design of the Human Psyche: Psychoanalysis, Evolutionary Biology and the Therapeutic Process By Malcolm Slavin and Daniel Kriegman by Don Greif, Ph.D. The Adaptive Design of the Human Psyche: Psychoanalysis, Evolutionary Biology and the Therapeutic Process, by Malcolm Slavin and Daniel Kriegman, is a profound and creative work and an awesome accomplishment. The fact that it is brilliant is almost beside the point. For what Slavin and Kriegman have accomplished in this book is that they have come as close as anyone writing from a psychoanalytic point of view has ever come to capturing the essential nature of the human condition. They have provided a highly compelling and lucid description of human nature, in all of its complexity and paradoxicalness, that is inspiring and moving. It is also hard to read. But, and this is an understatement, it is well worth the effort. I can almost guarantee that you will be richly rewarded if you invest the time and energy necessary to understand what Slavin and Kriegman are saying. They use an adaptive theoretical framework, one which is largely based on contemporary evolutionary biology, as a vantage point from which to critically examine the basic premises about human nature which are contained within each of the two major psychoanalytic paradigms -- the classical and relational narrative traditions. Using an evolutionary framework, they elucidate the two narratives= respective assumptions about the nature of the human psyche and of the relational world, and they reveal the important truths about human nature and the psyche contained within each tradition. Through a process of examining and deconstructing important metaphors from both classical and relational traditions (repression, endogenous drives, and the true self) into their basic meanings, and then reconstructing those meanings into an evolutionary narrative, Slavin and Kriegman provide a new paradigm for psychoanalysis, one that synthesizes the essential truths contained in each narrative into a comprehensive framework or whole. The new evolutionary narrative which results appears to embrace, in a way that has not been achieved before, the inherently valid pieces of each narrative tradition. The evolutionary narrative which results from this synthesis depicts human beings, according to Slavin and Kriegman, "as innately individualistic and innately social; as endowed with inherently selfish, aggressively self-promoting aims, as well as an equally primary altruistic disposition toward those whose interests we share. We are, in short, never destined to attain the kind of highly autonomous individuality enshrined in the classical tradition, nor are we the "social animal" of the relational vision. We are essentially "semisocial" beings whose nature, or self-structure and motivational system, is inherently divided between eternally conflicting aims." (p. 281) Since Slavin and Kriegman use an evolutionary framework to evaluate the validity of the basic premises of the classical and relational models, one must wonder about the validity of evolutionary theory itself. It seems that evolutionary theory has widespread acceptance and credibility within the scientific world. It is perhaps close to having attained the same status as more familiar and broadly accepted scientific theories. In the November issue of Natural History the evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stated the following: "As for the claim that evolution is an unproved theory, that's nonsense. Evolution is a fact, established with the same degree of confidence as our theory' of the round earth, our germ theory' of disease, and the atomic theory' of matter. Yes, there is lively debate about the particular evolutionary mechanisms that caused particular changes, but the existence of evolutionary change is not in doubt" (p. 19). For the purpose of evaluating Slavin and Kriegman's ideas, it is significant to note that evolutionary biological theory has a far different scientific status than psychoanalytic theory. As a scientific theory psychoanalysis has achieved little credibility in its first hundred years. It has achieved far more credibility as a method of treating psychological problems, and there its adherents consist mainly of its beneficiaries, that is, those who have gained personally from it, or from its offspring, psychoanalytic psychotherapy. It is contemporary evolutionary biological theory, largely through the work of Robert Trivers, that has vastly increased our understanding of the social environment. It is this theory that is most relevant to Slavin and Kriegman's work and to psychoanalysis, for it is understanding those forces that shape social evolution that has made it possible for Slavin and Kriegman to fulfill an aim that Freud sought but failed to achieve; mainly, to link the universal, underlying features of internal psychic structure to ancestral interpersonal experience. Slavin and Kriegman demonstrate that those psychodynamic features that comprise our "deep structure," such as the capacities for repression, regression, and transference, have evolved over the course of millions of years as adaptations to our environment, in particular to the unique and complex realities in our social or relational environment. The complex inner design of the human psyche has been shaped by the same forces that operate within the natural world to shape living organisms, mainly those that constitute natural selection. The basic universal features of the human psyche are a result of their having conferred an adaptive advantage on our ancestors; those humans who had these features were more successful at negotiating the complex relations dilemmas and paradoxes that faced them and were more successful, ultimately, at reproducing and surviving in that social environment. Robert Langs, in an article in the October 1993 issue of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, ("Psychoanalysis: Narrative Myth. or Narrative Science") criticizes Slavin and Kriegman for adopting a teleological position in their use of certain concepts. Referring to their conceptualization of repression as serving to safeguard aspects of an individual's "true self" so that they can be retrieved when relational conditions change, Langs states, "The ideas of a true self (all moments of selfhood are interactional in nature) and of the goal of self-actualization are teleological no matter how they are stated" (p. 580). It seems clear that Langs has not understood several central ideas in Slavin and Kriegman's book nor, it seems, has he understood evolutionary theory. Slavin and Kriegman see the existence of something like the "true self," some core, "endogenous" or independent source of motivation, not as an end in itself, but rather as a basic feature of the human psyche, part of its deep structural, adaptive design that has evolved over millions of years as a functional solution to a highly challenging and complex dilemma that has faced (and continues to face) the human child since the time of our prehuman ancestors, namely how to construct a self in a world where it is highly dependent for its identity on others whose interests not only overlap and converge but also necessarily diverge and, at times, conflict with its own. Slavin and Kriegman state, "Evolutionary theory suggests that even responsive, attuned, facilitative familial environments will inevitably be characterized by a highly ambiguous mixture of overlapping mutual interests, intrinsic conflict, and ongoing deception" (p. 121). Slavin and Kriegman believe that the "true self...may signify a dimension of our overall adaptive design...that seems to provide us with an absolutely critical source of information about our individual interests" (p. 176). In their view "a design element such as [the true self] became a critical, functional necessity for a species in which our s

Book Description
This volume consists of papers written by evolutionary, molecular and organismal biologists, geneticists, ecologists, behavioural ecologists, morphologists, mathematicians, theoreticians and experimentalists, in honour of Professor Eviatar (Eibi) Nevo on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The contributors are only a small subset of Eibi's many friends, collaborators and students (not that one can distinguish these categories among Eibi's colleagues). His widespread influence and activity, both in Israel and more generally, as a leading evolutionary biologist is indicated by his many co-authors on books and papers, and by his many students integrated in teaching and research.
This volume presents some of the most recent dramatic results of molecular, genomic, and organismal evolutionary processes. It represents analyses, experiments, observations, reviews, discussions and forecasts of evolutionary theory comprising both novel methods and results, reanalyzed and reviewed data sets based on comparative, experimental, and theoretical studies utilizing model organisms across phylogeny, including bacteria, fungi, plants, animals and humans. It elucidates the revolution in molecular biology that ushered in our understanding of the evolutionary process over time and space. The topics discussed include major problems of evolutionary theory concerning origins, phylogeny, relative importance of evolutionary forces, structure and function, adaptation and speciation in space and time in changing and stressful environments. A major emerging generalization is the nonrandomness of genome structure highlighting the importance of natural selection as a major organizing evolutionary force not only at the phenotypic level, but most importantly at the interlinked genotypic molecular level. The integration between the molecular and organismal levels unifies life which is subjected to the mechanism of natural selection as a major orienting evolutionary force.

Book Description
Hybrid zones--geographical areas in which the hybrids of two races are found--have attracted the attention of evolutionary biologists for many years, both because they are windows on the evolutionary process and because the patterns of animals and plant variation seen in hybrid zones do not fit the traditional classification schemes of taxonomists. Hybrid zones provide insights into the nature of the species, the way barriers to gene exchange function, the genetic basis of those barriers, the dynamics of the speciation process. Hybrid Zones and the Evolutionary Process synthesizes the extensive research literature in this field and points to new directions in research. It will be read with interest by evolutionary biologists, geneticists, and biogeographers.

Description:
Genetic algorithms (GAs) are routinely used to search problem spaces of interest. A lesser known but growing group of applications of GAs is the modeling of so-called ''evolutionary processes'', for example, organizational learning and group decision-making. Given such an application, we show it is possible to compute the likely GA parameter settings given observed populations of such an evolutionary process. We examine the parameter estimation process using estimation procedures for learning hidden Markov models, with mathematical models that exactly capture expected GA behavior. We then explore the sampling distributions relevant to this estimation problem using an experimental approach.

Book Description
Over the last two decades, research into epistasis has seen explosive growth and has moved the focus of research in evolutionary genetics from a traditional additive approach. We now know the effects of genes are rarely independent, and to reach a fuller understanding of the process of evolution we need to look at gene interactions as well as gene-environment interactions. This book is an overview of non-additive evolutionary genetics, integrating all work to date on all levels of evolutionary investigation of the importance of epistasis in the evolutionary process in general. It includes a historical perspective on this emerging field, in-depth discussion of terminology, discussions of the effects of epistasis at several different levels of biological organization and combinations of theoretical and experimental approaches to analysis.
Book Description
Downsizing Dad is a humorous description of the many frustrating experiences separated fathers face as they try to continue to parent their children through separation and divorce. Ostensibly presented both as a warning and as tongue-in-cheek advice, Downsizing Dad describes the divorced father largely by ridiculing his ineptitude as he naively bumbles about, trying to find his way in a suddenly changed world. In doing so, however, Downsizing Dad makes a powerful statement about the critical role fathers play in the care and nurturing of their children. Downsizing Dad also mocks the discrimination fathers are subjected to and is harshly critical of those who make their living advocating for excluding responsible and loving fathers from the lives of their children. Downsizing Dad is both hilarious satire and powerful social commentary.
