CUSTOMER-CENTERED SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT A Link-by-Link Guide
In today's environment of globalism and blink-of-the-eye technological change, manufacturing companies must constantly ask themselves these tough questions:
-- Do we have the best suppliers at the lowest possible prices? -- Are we getting and sending materials as quickly as possible? -- Can the voices of our customers be heard in our processes? -- Are customers satisfied with our products?
Transforming a company's 'supply chain' into an optimally efficient, customer-satisfying process is one of the most crucial challenges of our day. This book provides a pragmatic, step-by-step guide to transforming a supply chain. In great detail, it provides a complete 'bridge' to facilitate change:
creating outcome-driven tasks and processes * retooling the structure and business strategy of the organization * setting up effective people/responsibility charts * incorporating technology for maximum benefit * creating performance-based rewards * measuring results FRED A. KUGLIN (Dallas, TX) is a Lead Client Partner at AT&T Solutions. An expert in start-up operations, logistics, and supply chain management, he has worked internationally with companies that include EDS, A.T. Kearney, and Frito-Lay.
Customer Reviews:
Applicable and Interesting.......2001-06-06
This book successfully combines applicable and valuable information on today's supply chain with an easy to read approach. His examples clearly outline an appropriate course of action and path to follow to improve upon a business' supply chain more toward the customer.
An excellent book for beginners and for those businesses with a little more experience in the field.
Disappointing.......2000-01-13
The book is theoritical and does not provide new practical ideas. It reads like an implementation methodology book more than a management book.
Very good book for beginers with sufficient references........1999-06-14
It's not a bad book for beginers in Supply chain management (SCM). This book introduces you to the basic fundamental with sufficient references. Not this book or any book in the world is comprehensive or plug-in formulation. So, don't expect to buy one-but-get-million. Since this book is only 200 pages, you can finish it in one night with sufficient knowledge to do more research including some URLs for the web-surfers.
Great foundational material.......1998-12-15
Though the concept of Supply Chain is not new, it is a vague and elusive subject. So much of what has been published on the subject more resembles the typical functional areas of operations or traffic management. Supply Chain is so much more but is often mistaken for the former two.
I particularly appreciated this book because of its elementary nature. It made it quite simple to rather quickly develop a comprehension and an appreciation for Supply Chain and, further,to be able to communicate this understanding to others in my organization who are still scratching their heads about this newly implemented function.
A practical start with one part missing........1998-11-05
This is a practical book which covers key issues such as managing change (without it killing you) and how to include quality in each stage. If you have a complex realignment of the business to deliver, this is good value.
However, there is NO direction as to HOW to determine the needs of the customer in terms that will fit the value/supply chain factors.
The direction to do this is paramount in the book, but alas there is not much on how to find and assess customer value determinants in ways that these can fit the supply chain drivers.
My PhD is on this need to retro fit customer value to a supply chain - I got a few good set up quotes but no direction as to how to make it happen.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2007-05-02
This book is an excellent resource. After almost a year of job hunting, I bought this book, put its suggestions into practice, and within a month I had the interview that got me a job in my field. This book helps you generate a bank of success stories focusing on your experience, education, and skills, and shows you how to use them to best showcase yourself in an interview. It provides many example interview questions, and teaches you how to use your stories to answer those questions well, rather than offering canned responses that make all candidates sound the same. Finally, this book goes beyond interview questions and answers to cover other aspects (such as demeanor and attitude) that have a big impact on the impression you give a prospective employer. If you're job hunting, this book is your best investment.
Too much.......2007-03-01
This book is supposed to coach you on how to ace job interviews, but the author tries to cover all too many bases and end up being obfuscating rather than helpful.
Comprehensive.......2005-03-02
This book takes a comprehensive approach to preparing for, succeeding during, and following up an interview. The structure is to plan it like a marketing campaign and then sell yourself - not so much as a logical point-counterpoint list of qualifications but rather appealing to the emotional side of interviewing as well. I like the rather wholistic approach, particularly how the planning component can boost your confidence going into the interview.

Customer Reviews:
Paper recipies.......2006-11-06
The book is helpful but I found that the same recipes were duplicated but just with different colors. No tips on how to make paper, just recipies. Good book if you wnt information on how to make pulp from natural resources.
Great reference source.......2006-03-01
This book is a great reference source and the numerous sample pictures make it very good for choosing the types of paper you wish to make without failed batches.
Great idea book for beginning paper makers.......2005-02-23
Though this book wasn't exactly what I had expected, I found it to be a fine resource for straightforward and easy to follow recipes. It's loaded with crisp photos and great ideas. While it doesn't offer much in the way of information on casting, I heartily recommend this book to those looking for paper recipe how-to and inspiration.
great recipes.......2005-02-22
Before getting this book I felt like there was just one way to make paper - buy the cotton pulp from the craft store, add some flowers or dye. This book really opened me up the possibilities. I think what first got my attention was when the authors wrote that you can use almost anything for pulp including brown paper gags, garden plants etc. I also love how there are ideas on adding texture - I would never have thought to use lace and string to emboss the paper or woven placemats to add texture. The pictures and instructions are all very clear. I was pretty new to paper making prior to buying this book - basically just relying on the instructions from my deckle but this really is a cool recipe book. Recipes are about 8 to each two-page spread and are very straightforward - e.g. 1 cup of lime pulp, 2 tsp metallic confetti followed by a paragraph on how best to mix the ingredients and what to expect. Large pictures of the resulting paper is shown too. The recipes are broken out into subjects such as textures with households items, fabric embossing, pouring and embedding, recycled pulps (using junk mail, construction paper), pigments (using tissue and food coloring) etc. Really a wealth of ideas are packed into this book. I love it.
Paper for beginners.......2002-03-25
I recently purchased this book, and had considered (sorry Amazon)
sending it back, since it wasn't at all what I'd been looking for. However, after Reading it through, and enjoying the Beautiful Illustrations I decided to keep it. As a practical guide, it is definately well suited for the person wanting to try their hand at paper making, and having no previous experiance
at all. It is not a good guide for the intermediate paper maker, or for those looking for detailed information regarding the construction of paper making equipment, or the use of more advanced techniques. A good guide for beginning hobbyists...and a lovely, addition to the bookshelf.
Book Description
Rudolf Raff is recognized as a pioneer in evolutionary developmental biology. In their 1983 book, Embryos, Genes, and Evolution, Raff and co-author Thomas Kaufman proposed a synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology. In The Shape of Life, Raff analyzes the rise of this new experimental discipline and lays out new research questions, hypotheses, and approaches to guide its development.
Raff uses the evolution of animal body plans to exemplify the interplay between developmental mechanisms and evolutionary patterns. Animal body plans emerged half a billion years ago. Evolution within these body plans during this span of time has resulted in the tremendous diversity of living animal forms.
Raff argues for an integrated approach to the study of the intertwined roles of development and evolution involving phylogenetic, comparative, and functional biology. This new synthesis will interest not only scientists working in these areas, but also paleontologists, zoologists, morphologists, molecular biologists, and geneticists.
Customer Reviews:
The persistence of basic animal body plans.......2001-04-19
This is a compelling gateway to a new perspective on evolution from the emerging developmental perspective. As the author notes at the beginning, the basic animal body plans are half a billion years old. With that the book embarks on a fascinating exploration of the relationship of evolution to development and in the process shows how our understanding, in the age of hox genes, is undergoing rapid transformation. Very interesting work indeed.
A Great Introduction to the Synthesis of Development and Evo.......2001-03-06
Why have no new phyla emerged since the Ordovician, even after tremendous mass extinctions such as the end Permian, or when life radiated onto land, an entirely new ecological niche? Why have metazoan "body plans" been conserved since the Cambrian, even while vast amounts of morphological change has occurred within the phyla? Do developmental constraints explain this, and if so, what types of constraints? Are the arthropods monophyletic, or not? What are the developmental bases of body-plan structure, how do developmental processes shape morphology? What do new genetic data tell us about phylogenetic relationships between phyla?
These are all questions I had formulated before reading this book. Some of these questions now have good answers, and others remain obscure. Raff does a good job summarizing what is known about these and other questions. Its now obvious that knowledge of developmental processes will answer, at least partially, some long standing evolutionary questions.
Also recommended is "Genes, Embryos, and Evolution," which covers much of the same territory, but is slight more up to date and includes some excellent color plates. As a lighter read, I would recommend Simon Conway Morris' book "The Crucible of Creation," which covers the early metazoan fossil record, and discusses some very tantalizing evidence for inter-phylum evolution from Ediacaran and early Cambrian fossils.
Evolutionary development biology of metazoa.......2000-11-27
This is a solid book on evolutionary developmental biology of the metazoa, suitable for the interested general reader as well as the scientific reader. A thorough set of references are provided at the end of the book.
Strangely Difficult, but Impressive & Rewarding.......2000-07-05
It took me awhile to get through this book--I probably read it twice by the time I was finished. This was because I found myself rereading nearly every paragraph as I progressed. I still have no clue why it was such hard slogging--while Raff makes little concession to the layman, the material is pretty much similar to what one finds in the "News & Reviews" section of a Nature magazine, something I'm pretty familiar with. While he has a slight tendency to be indirect and abstract in his choice of words now and then, it is nothing glaring or overly annoying. Truth is I just don't know why I found it so difficult. But I stuck with it, and there is a good reason: Raff's remarkable detailed command of nearly every aspect of modern biology is nothing short of awesome. And it has to be, for his purpose is to weave disparate, highly technical and entrenched realms of biological study (genetics, cladistics, embryology, paleontology, molecular biology, and evolutionary theory, to name the main strains) into a unified tapestry of understanding. Raff aims at providing a launching pad for such cross-disciplinary synthesis, and I believe he more than succeeds. His inital stabs at theory in this new arena are sound, I believe--he successfully questions the primacy of heterochrony as an explanatory principle of developmental evolution, and forcefully suggests developmental modularity as a deeper source of insight. For instance, Raff identifies the phylotypic Bauplan of organisms with a period of maximum module inter-connectivity in development. He coins the term "developmental hourglass" to convey the concept--both early and late development in embryos have greater developmental flexibility (due to relatively fewer interactions between developmental modules) compared to a constraining mid-developmental "waist" where the phylotype is laid down during organogenesis.
Did you just have to read that twice to get it?
An effort to rejoin empbryology and evolution..........1999-05-14
This book represents Rudolf Raff's latest effort to shed light on the imporance of developmental biology to the future development of evolutionary theory and research. After all, evolution and its processes are evident in genes, developmental patterns and processes, and in the form of living things (animals in the case of this book). The main strength of this book is its approach to showing how the reintegration of developmental biology and evolutionary thought can help us better understand and describe how things came to be the way they are. The main weakness of the book is the limitation of the book's content to animal forms only. I appreciated the discussions showing how developmental processes allow for higher degrees of plasticity at the earliest stages of development and in later stages, but that developmental plasticity is minimized at the phylotype -- the stage of development that defines the body plan of the organism. This is an important book for developmental biologists and evolutionary biologists alike.
