Riahi-Belkaoui examines the crucial issues involved in the determination and uses of earnings as a measure of financial performance. He points out that the nature and measurement of earnings are subject to various interpretations, that determination of earnings follows determination of net value added, and that earnings is subject to management manipulation (earnings can be "smoothed," for example.) A succinct, penetrating, illuminating treatment of earnings in general as well as its particulars, the book will be especially useful to upper management and accounting professionals, and to their colleagues in the academic community. Riahi-Belkaoui argues that the interest in earnings and its related issues of measurement, determination, management, and usefulness stems from three factors: 1) the crucial importance of earnings as the shareholders' share of the corporation's wealth; 2) the reliance of investors and users on earnings and the transformation of earnings for resource allocation decision making; and 3), the direct association between the efficiency of the capital markets and timely provision of earnings data. Each chapter identifies the nature of the issues surrounding the concept of earnings and presents empirical evidence that can be used to make enlightened corporate decisions or to aid in the development of public policy.

The seller has refused to return my emails as well as failed to send me my purchase. I have asked for a refund and they have failed to do that too. Therefore, they made easy money without providing me the item I purchased for my current college course. I totally do not recommend purchasing any item from this seller. This is a required text for a business class at Lawrence Tech. University in Michigan. It is full of diagrams and charts and basic jargon-filled info that everyone should know without having to spend $135! And this is in the FIFTH edition, so that used books are hard to come by, and the price just goes up. If you are buying it you are probably forced to. So sorry! BORING, BORING, BORING, and just filled with common sense that one should know if one has ANY experience at all.

Maybe this would be useful for a writing course on how to bore students to death and make money by making new editions with little changes.

Exploring Ancient Skies uses modern science to examine ancient astronomy throughout the World, that is, to use the methods of archaeology and insights of modern astronomy explore how astronomy was practiced before the invention of the telescope. It thus reviews an enormous and growing body of literature on the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, the Far East, and the New World, particularly Mesoamerica, putting the ancient astronomical materials into their archaeological and cultural contexts. The book consists of two parts. The first emphasizes naked-eye astronomy: the motion of objects in the sky, the determination of time and calendars, corrections due to various factors such as parallax or atmospheric diffraction, and rare or transient phenomena such as eclipses, aurorae and comets. The second part begins with a discussion of the Paleolithic and Neolithic roots of astronomy. It then turns to the antecedents of the modern Western Astronomy: Mesopotamia, Greece, ancient and mediaeval Europe. Separate chapters deal with astronomy in ancient Egypt and Africa; India; China, Korea and Japan; the cultures of the Pacific; and the Americas, with particular emphasis on Mesoamerica, since this is one of the few areas for which written evidence is linked to astronomical alignments. Throughout, the discussion emphasizes the main purposes of ancient astronomy, many of which it shares with modern astronomy: astrology, navigation, calendar regulation, and understanding of our place and role in the universe. Exploring Ancient Skies provides a comprehensive review and reference for scholars and students in both astronomy and archaeology.

An admirable but overall weak effort.......2002-05-01

Considering the lack of texts in this important area, it is difficult to compare this monograph to anything else. The authors do an admirable job of covering a wide range of topics in everything from colloids to rheology to solid forms. However, the flow of the text is poor, and there are numerous mistakes. The greatest problem with this book is the translation--it is clear that much was lost in going from the original German to English. In a few cases, the original German words were left in the text. With so few other books covering this topic, I would cautiously recommend this book. Hopefully the next version will improve on the translation, and cover some new territory (such as the application of Design of Experiment methods to formulation).
