    Book Description

If a family-owned company is to endure and provide the maximum potential opportunity for future generations, it must plan for provision of both adequate shareholder liquidity and sufficient business capital. Many believe their options are limited: restrict money available to the family; sell the business; or go public. Rather than allowing financial pressures to destroy the family business, careful planning and sophisticated use of the growing collection of financial techniques can help the family retain business control and make wise choices among many available alternatives. Francois deVisscher, one of the nation's leading authorities on family business finance, joins Drs. Aronoff and Ward in producing this volume. Financing Transitions: Managing Capital and Liquidity in The Family Business is a guide to: * anticipating and managing capital and liquidity needs; * understanding how the "Family Effect" can be a family business' greatest asset--or its greatest threat; * evaluating two dozen up-to-date, sophisticated financial solutions for providing liquidity and capital for the family business; * recognizing how predictable family business transitions can erupt into family crises; * avoiding the downward liquidity spiral; * keeping patient capital from becoming impatient; * controlling the family business's cost of capital; and much more... Financing Transitions: Managing Capital and Liquidity in the Family Business gives business owners the financial insight and understanding needed to provide future generations with the fullest possible opportunity to enjoy the unique benefits of business ownership.

            Book Description

In one of the first in-depth studies to focus on minorities who have made it to the top echelons of corporate America, Breaking Through examines the crucial connection between corporate culture, career development, and the advancement of people of color. The often surprising conclusions drawn by authors Thomas and Gabarro represent important milestones both for the study of organizational practice and for minorities planning their own course of professional achievement.

Breaking Through profiles minority executives at three different firms who encountered-and conquered-barriers throughout their careers. It then contrasts their successes at the same companies with the experiences of white executives who reached upper management, and with white and minority middle managers coming to grips with stalled careers. From the compelling stories a distinct pattern emerges in the way minorities advance. The message is clear and startling: the path that leads minorities to the top is fundamentally different from the route followed by their white peers. Here are the determining factors-both individual and organizational-that correspond to the advancement of minority executives to the highest levels.

Breaking Through is an unflinching look at the very real obstacles that await minorities in a workforce whose leadership is still predominantly white. Pathways to success do exist for minorities, say Thomas and Gabarro, and breakthroughs can happen-if individuals and organizations understand the roles they play in creating the opportunities that enable minority executives to reach the top.

This is destined to become one of the classic management texts. I found the authors treatement of the subject matter to be insightful and well thought out. This is a must for any person of color who is wondering why it's taking them so long to move into the executive level. As a trainer I will be using this as one of my texts, and I plan on sending a number of copies to my friends.

            5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it.......1999-07-23

I just finished reading Breaking Through and learned quite a bit. Recommend it to you. I wish the subject of leadership, and how to properly use it to get results on the job, was addressed more. I recommend you also get a copy of another book that addresses this issue and is very applicable to the subject of minorities as leaders: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills." It's at Amazon too.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......1999-07-22

Breaking Through is a multifaceted book that speaks to a spectrum of audiences: the business leader committed to creating a diverse workplace; the human resource professional charged with designing and implementing diversity initiatives; the minority professional aspiring to break through.

This book sheds light on the complex career dynamics presented to minority professionals in corporate America. As an aspiring minority professional, I took away valuable strategies, as well as pitfalls, for achieving my career goals.

The book is a balance of compelling empirical evidence and real-life examples. The depth of analysis makes for an engaging and enlightening reading experience.

Breaking Through will serve as a personal professional reference guide and I am sure that it will become an invaluable resource throughout my career.

5 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful.......1999-06-30

Few books have the ability to relate the importance of the information contained within to both professional and layman alike. That is, however, exactly what this book accomplishes. It shows you the how the achievements of minorities trying to attain status at the corporate level are linked to career decisions and mentoring relationships. This is accomplished by examining the characteristics of several minority executives at different companies who have managed to break through the glass ceiling. It also teaches several approaches for acheiving racial diversity throughout a company. It examines three large corporations who have accomplished this feat, by tracing their diversity efforts throughout the past few decades. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the processes by which businesses accomplish diversification throughout all levels of the company.

                  Book Description

The law of international trade raises questions of great intellectual depth. In Principles of Law Relating to International Trade, the author draws from his practical and teaching experience to give a comprehensive introduction to the key areas of law that apply in international business.

For the benefit of readers unfamiliar with the English legal system and the many associated branches of English civil law, the book includes a brief introduction to, among other topics, constitutional, criminal, and employment law.

The branches of law directly related to international trade, such as contract, insurance, competition, carriage of goods, and sale of goods, are concisely covered in the main text. Case studies and examples are used to clarify the issues for the non-specialist, making international trade law accessible to those taking professional examinations in this field, as well as business executives. The extensive use of footnotes and inclusion of case commentaries bring into clearer focus the many facets of this complicated subject and would be of benefit to the international trade law specialist.

I read this book when I was taking the exams of Institute of Export. It is a very simple book about International Trade Law.That's why it is good for the readers especially whose second language is English. One of the missing points inthe book is the lack of cases. It gives the name of the cases but not the details. You need some other books if you would like to go a bit more in depth especially on the cases.

The asteroids in a chart help to flavor enhance what you're looking at. This is one of the best, fleshed out reference guides to the asteroids. The mythological stories behind the goddesses is crucial to understanding the meaning assigned to the individual asteroids. Further, it sets up archtypal understanding which is great when working through the issues outlined by a chart. If you are a beginning student, put this on your list but skip it until you can put into perspective the influence of asteroids vs. planetary influence. Intermediate and up... don't cheat yourself. Get the book!

Now in a newly published and expanded edition with updated ephemerides of 16 asteroids 1930-2050, Asteroid Goddesses by Demetra George and Douglas Bloch is an impressive astrology guide emphasizing the mythology and psychology intertwined with heavenly bodies and the practice of interpreting their prophecy and guidelines. An extremely lengthy and data-filled appendix of ephemerides enhances this technical and in-depth dissection. Asteroid Goddesses is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the Astrology and Metaphysical Studies reference shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Astrology students need this book.......2001-12-13

How this book ever got out of print for a minute I do not know. All students of astrology need Demetra in their bookshelf and on their desk. An understanding of the asteroid goddesses is a way to add an entire new dimension to understanding the natal and other charts. Demetra understands the ladies in myth, history, and in the psyche, and she details, amazingly well, their meaning in the chart.

5 stars except that I wish the other asteroids were included ... The four main goddesses are here and understanding them is enough of a project for awhile ... but I wish we'd gotten the entire sisterhood ... probably they are around here somewhere ...

The great thing Demetra has done is add the presence of feminine values and concerns to the horoscope. Supporting the Moon, the asteroid goddesses have as their interest, relationship, hearth, romance, adventure, protection, nurture. No natal chart should be without them.

5 out of 5 stars A basic for asteroid interpretation in a chart.......2000-04-08

I loved this book. I am someone who believes the asteroids have a fine tuning significance on the overall chart, and this book does a splendid job of explaining the archetypes behind them. I think the brevity of the minor asteroids goes along with the significance you should place on a chart. Psyche is not going to be as profound as Saturn for most people, Demetra George did a great job covering the material in a clear, concise way. Hopefully, she will write more good stuff for us to read and learn from.

                  Book Description

This is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either in an undergraduate physical chemistry course or by beginning graduate students with little undergraduate background in the subject. It assumes familiarity with thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the kinetic theory of gases, quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, at the level at which these subjects are normally treated in undergraduate physical chemistry. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics and is ideally suited to use in one semester courses.

                  Download Description

Statistical mechanics is the theoretical apparatus used to study the properties of macroscopic systems - systems made up of many atoms or molecules - and relates those properties to the system's microscopic constitution. This book is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either by advanced undergraduates or by beginning graduate students. The first chapter deals with statistical thermodynamics and aims to quickly derive the most commonly used formulas in the subject. The remainder of the book then illustrates the application of these formulas in traditional areas such as the ideal gas and less traditional areas such as the quantum ideal gas. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics ideal for use on an 8-12 lecture course.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2006-09-01

While looking for a suitable textbook for a one-semester course on Statistical Mechanics, I found this little gem by Prof. Widom, a recognized authority in the field. It was a pleasure to read, clear, all the classical topics well explained, very understandable.
Several excellent textbook on the subject are available, but none conveys so much in so little space (THE SPACE you have available in an undergraduate lecture course), yet with no compromise on rigour or clarity. At the beginning, I was a little uneasy by the choice of skipping a discussion of the (difficult) foundations, jumping directly to the Boltzmann distribution as a starting point. Now I totally agree with it, it is the best for a first introduction, and if time is left (rarely) one can profitably add a discussion on fundations at the end of the course.

                                          Book Description

This monograph deals with integrable dynamic systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. Leading scientists were invited to discuss the notion of integrability with two main points in mind: 1. a presentation of the various recently elaborated methods for determining whether a given system is integrable or not; 2. to understand the increasingly more important role of integrable systems in modern applied mathematics and theoretical physics. Topics dealt with include: the applicability and integrability of "universal" nonlinear wave models (Calogero); perturbation theory for translational invariant nonlinear Hamiltonian systems (in 2+1d) with an additional integral of motion (Zakharov, Schulman); the role of the Painlevé test for ordinary (Ercolani, Siggia) and partial differential (Newell, Tabor) equations; the theory of integrable maps in a plane (Veselov); and the theory of the KdV equation with non-vanishing boundary conditions at infinity (Marchenko).

Erotic short stories have gone out of style, but Whileaway reverses that trend with this eye-popping collection of salacious tales that will appeal to your mind and your funny bone.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A Real Hoot.......2005-11-19

                                          T. Martin Woody's Whileaway is not for readers who don't like wit and humor. Nor is it for readers who blanch at adolescent sexual fantasies. But it's a must read for those who enjoy a narrative fabric that weaves all three of these factors together. In flavor, the book reminds me the early 1970s X-Rated movie version of Alice in Wonderland, presenting an unabashed joy in human sexuality within an ironic context that refuses to take itself too seriously. Whileaway is, in short, a real hoot, great fun and (dare I say it?) a very stimulating read.

5 out of 5 stars Roald Dahl on Viagra.......2005-06-13

When the NY Times runs a 2/3rd page article on the sex book industry (6/7/05), can a resurgence of erotic stories be far behind? T. Martin Woody's "Whileaway" seems to have caught the wave with 5 delicious short stories ranging from the merely ribald to the hilarilously pornographic. Unlike most porn, which exhibits all the finesse of car crash, Woody's stories are not only clever-they have actual plots-but the frenetic sex occurs as the natural outcome of the always twisted story lines. (Roald Dahl's "Kiss-Kiss" comes to mind.)

The two stories of greatest interests to the target audience ("men, ages 18-80") are "Monika," a sweet, torrid lesbian coming of age encounter of an exquisitely dressed older woman with a young girl at a Baltic beach resort, and "The Nun." The latter is an engineer's damp dream as a make believe psychiatrist cleverly bamboozles an earnest Nun sent by her diocese to attend a religious conference on martial intimacy. The Nun may be innocent, but she is no fool.

The piece de resistance is a 17,000-word "pornovella" called "The short happy life of Harry A. Winston." Franz Kafka wrote "The Metamorphosis" in which the subject awakes one morning to find that he has been turned into a beetle. In "Short Happy Life," the hero is a flabby 44-year old illustrator who has been turned into a 17-year old boy. The title is a reference to the "The short happy life of Francis Macomber" by Ernest Hemingway. That tale is about a coward who goes on African Safari with his cheating wife. For one glorious split second as an elephant charges him, he finally overcomes his fear and shoots it, just as his wife shoots him. Woody's 44-year old protagonist remains a 17-year old a little longer-a full week. Long enough to live out the life-long dream of every man-to return to high school as a youth, but with the mind of an adult. In this case a very randy adult. The twists and turns of this plot is exceeded only by the incredible series of escapades Harry enjoys in his one week culminating with a spectacular conjugation at the Senior Prom. I never knew high school romances could be so complicated-and so funny.
