Book Description
Financial systems around the world are undergoing a process of modernization due to many different forces. Advances in information technology, product and market innovations, and recent regional financial crises have contributed to this movement. As a result, evolution in the financial sector is leading to larger, more complex financial organizations that render inadequate the supervisory and regulatory structures currently in place. While some changes in regulatory policies have already occurred, the adaptation of supervisory oversight and regulation in the face of these new developments is expected to continue for many years to come.
This book collects papers originally presented in September 1998 at the Financial Modernization and Regulation Conference co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and San Francisco. Revised before publication, the papers seek to identify the reasons for changes in the financial services sector, and the implications these changes pose for financial supervision and regulation. Taken together, the papers offer valuable insights on 1) the forces behind financial modernization; 2) the implications financial modernization poses for corporate structure, market discipline, and financial regulation; 3) how to price deposit insurance accurately to reflect banks' risk-taking; and 4) balancing private versus public interests and managing potentially conflicting public policy goals.

Customer Reviews:
A Helpful Manual for Organizations and Coach Trainers.......2006-10-21
"Law & Ethics in Coaching" is a compilation of 10 chapters by professional coaches and coach trainers. Each chapter takes up a different aspect: background on ethics, developing and maintaining client trust, developing coaching competence, ethical use of assessments, legal issue, culture & ethics, and a few other topics. Not the most riveting of topics, but well written and very practical!
Despite the title, there's not a lot in the book about coaching and specific laws, which is good since all laws are localized. Ethics on the other hand, have a broader scope. The various authors appear to be based in the USA, but also purport a lot of international expertise. One chapter speaks to the intersection of ethics and culture.
Although most coaches would benefit from reading this book, it's a great resource for supervisors/mentors of coaches, coach trainers, or someone developing internal coaching guidelines and policies for an organization.

The New Solar System
ASIN: 0195116941 |
Book Description
Scientists have collected a wealth of physical and chemical data for the Sun, planets, and small bodies in our solar system, but until now this information has been scattered throughout the technical literature. The Planetary Scientist's Companion solves this problem, providing for the first time a single, extensive reference for the interdisciplinary fields of planetary science and cosmochemistry. The book begins with a summary of frequently used physical and chemical constants, unit conversion factors, properties of some compounds and minerals, thermodynamic data, partition coefficients, and useful formulas. This is followed by an overview of the solar system, including comparative data for the planets and their satellites and abundances of the elements. Much of the book is devoted to a series of chapters describing in turn the Sun, each of the planets, and the groups of small bodies (asteroids, comets, meteorites, and Kuiper Belt and Centaur objects). Each chapter includes an introduction, followed by tables of physical and chemical properties compiled from many sources, including data on planetary atmospheres, surfaces, and interiors. The book concludes with data on nearby stars, the interstellar medium, and recently discovered brown dwarfs and possible extrasolar planets, followed by a glossary. A unique and practical resource for anyone interested in contemporary planetary science and cosmochemistry, this volume is likely to be an essential tool in future research.
Customer Reviews:
Useful compilation of data.......2004-08-07
I have not found the same level of errors as the previous reviewer mainly because I am in a different field of planetary science, and I really appreciated having a useful and readily available text as a source of data. The chemical tables are excellent and rigorous, as one would expect from two planetary chemists. The meteorite data compilation is among the best I've ever seen. Planetary data is accurate to the mid-1990s, and is excellent for quick calculations. References are given for all tables, and should be conferred with prior to publishing anything.
Since my field area is rather varied (astrobiology), this book fills a special void in that it compiles data from numerous subjects. If I need to know the mass of Europa, the abundance and location of S class asteroids, and the escape velocity of Mars, this text has it in a fairly easy to find format.
Close to being really useful. . ........2001-04-03
But not. I saw this on my advisor's shelf and thought it would be totally useful to have on my own. Sometimes its a pain to look up planetary data on the web while doing work, and I thought that maybe it would be nice to have it close at hand in hardcopy.
The previous reviewer gave a good assessment of the overall content of the book -- its a compilation of data relevant to planetary scientists including bulk data on the planets (mass, radius, orbital semimajor axis), chemical data on the planets (relevant chemical reactions, weight % of species), general chemical data (molecular weights and such), etc. Basically a whole bunch of stuff that you use relatively often but always have to go fumbling through your papers to find.
Unfortunately, the level of errors (typographical or otherwise) in the book is too high to allow me to use it when I really need it. In a textbook, or a popular book, description of the concepts and processes involved are more important than getting facts right, so this sort of typo thing doesn't matter. However, in a book of facts, if some of the facts are wrong, it brings into doubt the validity of the rest. Basically, my problem is that I can use it for back-of-the-envelope calculations, but if I'm going to put something in a paper I look it up on the web to make sure that it isn't one of the mistakes. Looking it up on the web was what I used to do anyway, before I got the book. So, in my experience, it hasn't been as useful as I had hoped it would be.
Like a poor-debating jerk I can't remember any particular errors except the one that goaded me into writing this review -- as I was looking through the table on bulk data of planets and satellites it claimed that the 5 major Uranian satellites (Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon) orbited retrograde. I didn't think that was the case, and when I checked on the NSSDC website sure enough, it wasn't.
Detailed Chemical View of Solar System.......2000-07-11
Three books on our solar system appeared in the last year or two. Each has its own "flavor." I will review them in turn, but browsers should be aware of the others, so they are listed here. In addition to this book, see "The New Solar System" J. Kelly Beatty, Carolyn Collins Petersen, Andrew Chaikin, and "Solar System Dynamics," C. D. Murray and S. F. Dermott.
This book is primarily for the research planetary chemist and geologist. Exhaustive tables are given of the chemical and geological features of the planets and their atmospheres, with a chapter devoted to each. What enticed me to buy the book were the mathematical formulae listed in the index. But these prove to be primarily for reference and do not enter significantly into the subsequent textual material.
I was tempted to return this book because it is relatively expensive for a 400 page paperback. But I decided to keep it out of respect for those planetary aspects which, at present, I am not deeply interested in, but which may in the future enter into my investigation and understanding.
For instance, why do the four inner planets differ so strikingly in density from the five outer planets? Did resonance conditions in the early solar system in some way resemble a mass spectrometer of cosmic dimensions!
It is clear that we have to know the chemistry as well as the physics in order to understand the solar system in its formative stages. This book well serves that dual purpose.

ASIN: 0849323711 |
Book Description
Microwave Assisted Organic Chemistry demonstrates the under lying principles of microwave dielectric heating and, by reference to a range of organic reaction types, its effective use in synthetic organic chemistry. The recent introduction of specifically designed and constructed microwave equipment, countering safety, and reproducibility concerns has led to widespread use of microwaves in synthetic organic chemistry. Microwave assisted synthesis is now established in many industrial and academic laboratories giving access to the novel chemistry that can be carried out in a variety of organic reaction types. Case studies, drawn from the pharmaceutical industry, illustrate the impact microwave assisted organic synthesis can have on chemical research.

Methods and Principles in Medicinal Chemistry: Microwaves in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry (Methods and Principles in Medicinal Chemistry)
ASIN: 3540309837 |
Book Description
Complex behavior can occur in any system made up of large numbers of interacting constituents, be they atoms in a solid, cells in a living organism, or consumers in a national economy. Analysis of this behavior often involves making important assumptions and approximations, the exact nature of which vary from subject to subject. Foundations of Complex-system Theories begins with a description of the general features of complexity and then examines a range of important concepts, such as theories of composite systems, collective phenomena, emergent properties, and stochastic processes. Each topic is discussed with reference to the fields of statistical physics, evolutionary biology, and economics, thereby highlighting recurrent themes in the study of complex systems. This detailed yet nontechnical book will appeal to anyone who wants to know more about complex systems and their behavior. It will also be of great interest to specialists studying complexity in the physical, biological, and social sciences.

4.5 Stars-The whole is not the sum of the parts;Excellent and scholarly.......2006-02-14
This is a very interesting book. The author demonstrates that she has command over a number of different fields. She exhibits a wide ranging scholarship in this book.In a nutshell, one can categorize the major conclusions she arrives at as the whole is not the sum of the parts alone.Neither a strictly micro or macro approach to the different fields she investigates, using a complex systems framework, yields the idealized types of scientific discovery and knowledge one finds postulated in some philosophy of science discourses that emphasize deductive closure laws.I have one slight criticism of the book, which is why I have subtracted one half a star. The author has a deep general understanding of the Keynes-Knight distinction between risk and uncertainty in economics(and in social sciences). However, she lacks an understanding of the specifics of Keynes's approach in the A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP).She is unaware of Keynes's interval estimate approach to probability, his index,w,used to measure the completeness of the evidence ,ranging from ignorance through partial knowledge to a complete information set,and Keynes's conventional coefficient of weight and risk, which treats risk, based on the purely deductive laws of probability, as a special case. This would be a very minor criticism if she had integrated the work of D.Ellsberg(Ellsberg's 2001 book,Risk,Ambiguity, and Decision gives a modern, improved and updated version of the TP) and B.Mandelbrot into her discussions involving economics, risk, and uncertainty(Ellsberg's Ambiguity with his rho and alpha indexes and the wild versus mild risk of the cauchy distribution versus normal distribution as discussed by Mandelbrot).Unfortunately,Ellsberg's contributions are not discussed at all while Mandelbrot receives a single footnote that completely ignores his contributions to economics. She can certainly obtain a 5-star rating by bringing out a revised edition in which the original, technical, pioneering work of Keynes is covered followed by the modern and updated contributions of Ellsberg and Mandelbrot.
a fascinating book -- recommended to philosophers.......2002-10-26
Philosophers of science need to read this book: the hands-on
account of how three sciences work is a healthy
corrective to the usual practice of writing philosophy of science
without actually knowing how the science is done.
A Professional work.......2000-03-30
This is an amazing work. Sunny Auyang has written an easily comprehenedible book on applications of complexity theories to economics, biology and physics. It is a professional writing to professionals in different fields. One needs college level maths and some physics to fully grasp it but she has made minimum use of mathematical symbols. Her writing flows, the examples are clear, some illuminate important issues in the applied fields, some are just homey bits that convey an idea insightfully. A lot of depth in her philosophical explorations of the complexity ideas. I consider this to be a must for any person studying or instructing in system thinking.
