5 out of 5 stars the best accounting book I have ever had.......2006-04-26

the book is well written in the sense that it provides background information (such as how people were debating on accounting standards, how FASB worked out compromising solutions) to help you understand the logic behind the accounting standards. It is not like many other accounting books, which focus mainly on how to prepare accounts. This book tells you why to do so, then how to do.

4 out of 5 stars Good thorough Accounting book.......2001-07-05

I have already owned a few books about Accounting, such as the one I used to use at college and other ones during my MBA. But, they are not as thorough as this book is. This book is so thorough that I will probably be able to use it for my future reference at work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for self study.......2006-04-26

The book not only teaches you how to book accounts, but also why to do so, which I rarely found in other comparable accounting books. It helps you understand the logic behind the accounting rules. The author is both a good teacher and good reseacher. I love this book!

2 out of 5 stars Wordy and heavy.......2003-05-28

I have been using this book for an Intermediate Accounting class that I have to take as a pre requisite for a Master's degree. Even though the book is quite complete in explaining accounting principles it is unecessarily wordy and extremely heavy.

The first five chapters (220 pages) provide a review of what accounting is, the accounting information system, the income statement and the balance sheet. Most of the what is written here is either too basic or will be later found in the remaining chapters of the book. These pages could be easily removed without sacrificing the remaining contents and the understanding of accounting.

Later chapters, however, are also wordy and take too much time explaining concepts that could readily be understood in a couple of lines. You end up getting tired of reading the same thing again and again.

In the end, we have to pay the price for so many pages. With 1300 + pages this book is the heaviest one I have ever carried around. Many people in my class have to use a wheeled backpack. I sometimes can't understand the fascination of editors in the US for such heavy books. If you go to Europe, Asia, and South America, books are usually thinner and much, much lighter.

I would recommend the book to be offered in a CD Rom (or e text) format. Carriyng my laptop around makes more sense than carrying the book.

2 out of 5 stars Accounting can sound less confusing than explained here.......2002-08-08

This book for undergraduate accounting classes at the junior level was more confusing to me than the comparable book by Kieso et al. The sequence of the chapters is not entirely logical. More advanced concepts seem to be covered towards the beginning whereas some basic chapters are discussed towards the end of the book. It was especially confusing when not covering the chapter in chronological order - too bad that my class's syllabus was not outlined according to this book's chapter sequence. In a different class - when we used Intermediate Accounting by Kieso - jumping back and forth was not a big problem. This book by Spiceland also seemed to be very wordy. Studying by solving problems at the end of the book seemed to work. However, it is more important to know how your teacher designs the quizzes and exams and then study accordingly. On the CD that comes with it, there is a lot of ballast. The quizzes are the only valuable thing, I felt. There is not really a lot of use complaining about its weight - accounting books always seem to be extremely heavy and pricy. But this certainly holds true for this one as well!!! When I tried to resell the book at the university bookstore, they would not take it back because it was selling badly on a national scale. Very frustrating when you paid [$$$] just a couple of months earlier...

2 out of 5 stars boring.......2002-05-30

This book put me to sleep. It is a very bland book. This is based on the volume one edition chapters 1-14.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Instruction.......2001-10-19

Straightforward and logical, the material in this text is so well laid out that it is truely possible to learn Intermediate Accounting on your own. An excellent sequential and progressive presentation of a difficult subject! My school has changed texts and is using Kieso's text, but I want to learn the material (all but impossible with Kieso) so this is the text I rely on!

Seattle, the corporate coffeehouse capitol of the world, is the setting for Beans, a smart fable about a real ten foot coffee counter with long lines in rain or shine. Using the plot device of a business crisis at the "El Espresso," Authors Yerkes and Decker spend time with owner Jack Hartman. They help him define success in terms of "the eye of intention."

Being successful in bad times means remembering how you got the business the first time. As the very insightful Jack reflects, the authors organize his approach with four P's: Passion (experience and sustain passion about work), People (create enduring staff relationships), Personal (building a community of regulars), and Product (sustaining product excellence). These "Ps" are prosaic in name only. They are used to illustrate nuanced connections. For example, the link between employee loyalty and customer loyalty and the synergy between an employee's pride in their product and their devotion to it.

While some readers may find the storyline contrived, the success and the charm of the El and its owner--both renamed to protect the regulars--provide engaging and stimulating ideas about how to nourish a business. --Barbara Mackoff

    Book Description

Beans is the story of The El Espresso, a legend in its own time in Seattle and a coffee company that has prospered by intentionally staying small, inspiring fanatical customer loyalty in the process. Told over the span of a single day, it follows The El's founder, Jack Hartman, through a business crisis that will challenge him and make him clear on why he does what he does. Unsure of whether he has lost the passion needed to sustain his business, Jack hires a consultant who flies to Seattle to "help" him but in reality bears witness to the secrets of good business, whether it's a company of 20 employees or 20,000. In the process, Jack learns about "the Four Ps" and how applying these universal principles can reenergize his employees, his customers, and even himself.

Though fictionalized, this is a true story in the best sense of the word. It arrives at a time when people are yearning to return to honest ways of doing business—before corporate dominance, inflated executive salaries, accounting trickery, and outright greed became so much a part of our everyday business headlines. It is the story of how a pushcart David up against the corporate Goliaths succeeded by focusing on what is core to good business and a good life: honoring customers, trusting employees, building passion around a product, and turning an honest profit.

3 out of 5 stars Repeat after Me: Be the Best You Can! Be the Best You Can!.......2006-09-12

I usually like business fables. This one was unfortunately well below par . . . and not because the business described was uninteresting. The business was very interesting.

But the book spent too much time going away from talking about the fable and into attempting to be an elementary class on how to run a very small business. I admit it. The unending repetition of the 4 P's (Passion, People, Personal and Product) got to me.

Is there anyone on the planet who doesn't know that good products sell better than less good ones? Are there any small business people who don't know that your people make a difference? Have you ever been annoyed if people gave you more personal service? Do you enjoy buying from passionate people?

If you know those things, you can skip this book. You've already passed this course.

I liked that the book was based on a real business where anyone would want to buy their coffee. I also liked that the advice was to give great service and products.

But aside from describing how they run their coffee business, this book was pretty boring and simplistic. For me the upside of the book was the description of peddling to work by bicycle trailed by cookies you've baked yourself and enjoying a half-hour ferry ride in between. That sounded very great indeed!

    3 out of 5 stars Beans.......2006-03-22

This is not a great book. It is short and sweet but general knowledge. It can serve as a great reminder but unless it is in the clearance bin don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars OBVIOUS VALUE BECAUSE IT'S CONCISE.......2005-04-05

Although there are literally tens of business cases presented in short book if not parable form for popular audiences, BEANS, recommends itself as one of the best ones by virtue of its usefulness for both managers and employees.

It tells a compelling story that presents real world challenges and realistic solutions. It presents a scale of business almost everyone should be able to relate to since it isn't about the sometimes otherworldly power plays the Captains of Industry like to write about. For the rest of us, the human-sized, daily dilemmas of making one's vision work while surviving to make them work, is sensibly and warmly expressed in BEANS.

BEANS is the kind of book that could pay for itself, if a saavy entrepreneur who resonates with its commonsense, promoted its message in their own enterprise.

    1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2005-01-10

This book is so poorly written it is laughable. This is a fable for yuppies who are fascinated by Seattle and expensive coffee drinks. The points it tries to make are so obvious (treat customers well, etc) that anyone who still needs to learn them has no place in the business world.
The author keeps inserting street names and places in Seattle as if to say "I know Seattle, isn't that cool?", but the writing is so bad and the points so obvious it could be condensed to a three or four page pamphlet.
I read the author's bio, and apart from working at Amazon (that's in Seattle!) he does not appear to have any real world experience. This is a bad book written by two "consultants" looking to cash in on the self help business book boom.
Leaf through it in a book store sometime and you will see what I mean.
Utter crap. Don't waste your money.

    5 out of 5 stars profound principles.......2004-08-27

A short easy to read book with profound principles. The ideas are common sense, but achieving the correct mix and right balance may be difficult to implement.

Moreover, I like the fact that this book has a "discussion forum" via the internet. A useful read for people studying marketing / management.

On second thought, a MUST read for all (employers + employees) on how to improve the enjoyability of their working lives!

Cool, classy, articulate, and brilliant--rarely do all of those adjectives apply at once to an astrophysicist. But Neil de Grasse Tyson is no ordinary scientist; as the director of New York City's Hayden planetarium, his job is to inspire the public with the beauty and grandeur of the universe, just as he was inspired there in his youth. The Sky Is Not the Limit is his memoir of the events leading from his birth to his acceptance of his dream job and beyond, and is a marvelously entertaining look at one man's pursuit of his life's calling. Tyson emphasizes the nurturing roles played by his parents, friends, and teachers, in contrast to the sometimes well-meaning but always disappointing discouragement he experienced from all sides in his quest for his Ph.D.

Of course, it's still shamefully difficult for a black American scientist to merit the same quality of attention as his or her peers, and Tyson's insights into the subtle but still-pervasive racism in academia are enlightening. His description of his own shock at seeing himself on television--a black man sought as an expert on something other than being black--is powerfully moving. But, as with his other books, like the gorgeous One Universe: At Home in the Cosmos, the quest for knowledge is more important than the obstacles, and his spirit, determination, and sense of humor prove that the sky really isn't the limit. --Rob Lightner

          Book Description

As the youngest-ever Director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil de Grasse Tyson is America's best-known astrophysicist, constantly called upon by the media to explain news-making scientific phenomena such as the discovery of water on Mars. How did an African American kid growing up in the Bronx, expected by everyone to become a star athlete, not an intellectual, become an extraordinarily successful scientist? This is the fascinating and moving account of Tyson's love affair with the night sky, beginning with the fateful day when he, as a small boy, happened to turn a pair of binoculars up toward the moon and was struck with wonder.

Packed with gorgeous descriptions of the night sky, The Sky Is Not the Limit invokes the grandeur of the cosmos as it tells Tyson's compelling personal story. In addition, it is a perceptive look at life and society as seen through the eyes of an astrophysicist, providing a valuable look into how scientists work in, and think about, the social, political, and physical world. From that eye-opening first glimpse of the moon, through his struggle to fulfill his dream of becoming an astrophysicist, to the triumphant opening of the new Hayden Planetarium, Tyson's story is remarkable.

          5 out of 5 stars by a sixteen-year old.......2005-08-03

The sky is not the limit is a novel that goes deep into the heart of the author, Neil de Grasse Tyson, who started out at a young age shooting for his dream to become an astrophysicist. This book gives the reader a mental view of the objects surrounding us both in space and on earth. Throughout Neil's life he has worked hard pursuing his passion in astrophysics.
I enjoyed this book because it is scientific and also teaches lessons of life that you may not otherwise encounter. I also enjoyed the comedy in his statements. I have learned that if I want to become a scientist like Neil, then I must start training at a young age. This book has opened up my eyes to become aware of many things that I did not notice before.

5 out of 5 stars out of this world!.......2004-08-31

Neil de Grasse Tyson's writing style is unpretentious and reads like a letter from a good friend. It reaches a wide audience from the high school student interested in astronomy to the astrophysist. It is easy to understand and appreciate, even if you don't have a degree in astrophysics. Upon completion of this book you will have gained a wealth of knowledge and a basic understanding of astronomy. This book is a great find for anyone intersted in learning about the how's and why's of the stars, solar system and the universe. The book is jam packed with interesting information presented to you as an autobiography rather than a text book, which makes it very easy to read and very enjoyable. I would give it more stars if I could.

          4 out of 5 stars A life in astronomy.......2002-02-02

Tyson is an astrophysicist and the director of the Hayden Planetarium. He's also black. This unusual juxtaposition provides the grist for this autobiography.

The black part of it is actually not that significant, at least for the most part. Tyson was a gifted and capable student who knew early on that he would go into astronomy. He had a supportive family and encouraging teachers. It would be an insult to Tyson to say he had a charmed life, but certainly he set himself on the right course from the outset (unlike, say, Ben Carson) and had good support along the way.

He goes on to talk about a life in astronomy and some of the technical issues he cares about, from the importance of understanding science and the associated silliness of being terrified of mathematical equations to the dangers of a meteorite striking the earth and destroying human life. He also spends a chapter talking about science, religion, and the fate of the universe. He insists that science and religion are two separate spheres, though without ever explicitly stating his own religious beliefs.

He does devote one chapter to racial issues, pointing out in a low-key way the myriad insults (usually indirect) that he has experienced due to the color of his skin, from police stops to people not realizing that he is as intelligent as he is. It's a sobering chapter and makes me realize how far this country still has to go in terms of eliminating racial prejudice.

Most of the book, though, is about the wonders of the skies and how a young man found his life's calling there. It's well worth reading for anyone but particularly for a young person thinking about making astronomy a career.

          5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Joys!.......2000-09-12

Dr. Tyson has written a wonderful memoir that will inspire anyone who reads it to become more interested in astrophysics, how to be a better parent, ways to improve as a mentor, and to seek out an inspirational profession.

The ultimate charm of this book is that Dr. Tyson is a warm, witty, self-effacing, and passionate human being. I seldom get the feeling from reading a book that I would enjoy having the author as a friend, but Dr. Tyson affected me that way.

For young people thinking about a career in science, Dr. Tyson is an excellent role model of how focusing on the joy you feel from the subject matter can evolve into additional joy from the intellectual content. In his description at the end of the book of how the putative Big Bang may have happened, I was enthralled. It was almost like reading poetry. Now, I have read many descriptions of the same subject, and have never been moved by them before.

Dr. Tyson also makes an eloquent case for creating planetary defense capabilities to divert or destroy asteroids or comets that could create catastrophic collisons with the Earth. I came away convinced that this was a worthwhile activity. You may, too.

Dr. Tyson had wonderful parents and mentors. I enjoyed reading about them as much as I did about the main subjects of the book. Anyone will pick up tips for being better at both roles from this book.

He also has a great sense of humor, telling many funny stories in a wonderfully straight way. In the process, he gently tweaks the racism that means that black astrophysicists have many confrontations with the police that white ones don't have, errors in popular movies (Jodie Foster will blush after she reads what he has to say about her), and our earthbound perspective that keeps us from appreciating the heavenly beauty above.

Dr. Tyson often appears with Peter Jennings on television. Watch for him, and notice his ties. He likes to wear ones with astrophysical references. He is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, so you will often see or hear him quoted on the latest space-related issues.

I should admit a bias to you. When the college I attended holds an annual alumni gathering in December each year in Boston, I always go to the astrophysics lectures. The photographs are gorgeous, and the ideas are very exciting. If you have a chance to do the same, you should do so.

After you read this book, ponder his section on science and religion and reconsider how the two areas relate to one another. I found his ideas interesting. Then consider how the two areas could relate to each other better. That's a question hardly anyone asks.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR JUST ABOUT ANYBODY.......2000-08-15

Tyson's book is somewhat of a 90s classic masterpiece. He goes from topic to topic about his exeriences and always entertains the reader while doing so. Such as the being black in academia and New York section, to the public's stupidy concering the natural laws of world. He also displays his wide knowledge of astrophysics and anything above the sun. In the end the book entertains, informs, and delights with the sky not being the limit!

This is a NAVAL HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH TOXICOLOGY DETACHMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A068473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Exposure for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2- ACM was lethal to experimental animals. Surviving animals showed elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, severe respiratory acidosis, and diminished oxygen transport in the blood, the combination of which was deemed the cause of death. These animals also showed signs of pulmonary inflammatory response. Two days post exposure, animals exhibited pulmonary pathophysiology indicative of restrictive lung disease. The pattern of pulmonary dysfunction at 14 days post exposure was similar, with some measures of lung function returning to normal while others remained significantly different from normal values. Although no deaths occurred, similar patterns of pulmonary dysfunction were evident in animals exposed for 1 hr to smoke from pyrolysis of 55 or 100 g of 132-ACM. These animals also had elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, decreased blood pH, and diminished oxygen capacity immediately post exposure however these symptoms were not as severe as those in animals exposed for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2-ACM. Quantitative analysis of a few selected smoke gases (CO, CO(2), NO(x), SO(2) and aerosol particulate consistently accounted for over 80% of the amount of B2-ACM that actually burned. Calculation of the nominal concentration of the smoke correlated well with the chemical analysis, the bulk amount of B2-ACM used to generate the smoke, and the pyrolysis rate.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A208143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report details the development of a facility for the experimental investigation of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement of forced convection heat transfer. The test facility was developed for the Thermal and Transparencies Laboratory (TATLAB), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), for use in future research into the applicability of EHD for the miniaturization of Air Force heat exchangers. During this research, a closed l6op, medium scale electrohydrodynamic test rig was developed and brought online. The test fluid loop was integrated with a data acquisition and parameter control system. Basic loop and fluid performance testing was accomplished through the use of a 3mm hydraulic diameter, square channel test section using Flourinert FC-72, a dielectric electronics coolant, as the working fluid. Due to the design of the test section, no heat transfer data was generated in this initial study. However, this study greatly expanded the experimental and practical understanding of the EHD phenomenon within AFRL, by providing a working knowledge of the basics of effective EHD test section design, contamination control procedures, and loop design and operation. Deficiencies in the design of the loop, data acquisition system, and test section were identified and recommendations for improvements in future work were delivered. The Air Force Research Laboratory is now poised to generate useful EHD heat transfer data with this test facility.

                  Book Description

The aim of this book is to provide, both the non-specialist and the specialist in EHD, with the ability to extract meaningful information from his/her experimental data and acquire a good physical understanding, by applying the ideas presented in this book. In addition to providing the scientific background, it is also intended to take the reader to the frontiers of research in this field, so they may go, without effort, into the specialized literature. This book may be considered as complementary to the excellent treatment of EHD made in the classical book "Continuum Electromechanics” by Melcher, in that care has been taken to avoid overlapping of the subjects. In case a topic is treated in both texts, the results presented in the book by Melcher serve as an introduction to the more advanced treatment presented in this book.

                    Book Description

This monograph is the first book exclusively devoted to Electrohydrodynamics in Dusty and Dirty Plasmas with extended Electrodynamics and Gravito-Electrodynamics with Electric Mirrors. The book incorporates novel concepts of Electro Cusp-Reconnection and Generalized Critical Ionization Velocities as well as modern concepts of Self-Organization and Chaos. Therefore, the book is special and quite different from the previous edition in the field of plasma physics in terms of scope, object, and approach.
The scope of the present work is much broader and much more general with space and laboratory applications, including collisional neutral and partially ionized gases in electric and space-charge fields, thereby accompanying electrical charging, electrification, discharge, ionization and recombination.
The book will serve as a text book, text-related or reference book for graduate students, post graduates, and scientists in geo-astro, space, and laboratory plasma physics, electromagnetics and fluid dynamics. In addition, it will be useful for researchers outside the plasma community who wish to obtain new physical insights, aspects, and points of view.

                          Description:
This paper deals with the production of charged water droplets by electrohydrodynamic atomisation (EHDA) of water, in air at atmospheric pressure, in a mode stabilised by a particular corona discharge regime. Indeed, impulse filamentary discharges developing in the gas around the liquid cone temporarily disrupt the EHD equilibrium leading to an unstable mode of EHDA with varying droplet properties (size and charge). The purpose of this paper is to show that a stable mode can be obtained by the control of the field divergence around the liquid, i.e. the electric field profile in the gas, leading to a continuous glow discharge without impulse filamentary discharge. Using observations, electrical measurements and droplets size characterisation, several spraying modes are depicted. We have demonstrated that the electrical discharge regime (continuous/impulse) induces the mode of EHDA (stable/unstable). The stability domains are defined versus liquid flow rate, conductivity, voltage for different nozzle diameters. Then, the properties of droplets (droplets diameter, spray current) produced within these modes are established as a function of the liquid flow rate, of the conductivity and of the glow current.

                            Description:
The formation and stabilisation of an EHD jet from a nozzle with an inserted non-conductive fibre were investigated. The fibre introduced two main effects. First the fibre eliminated backflow in liquid meniscus and allowed the electric field only to accelerate the liquid, while using common capillary nozzle required electric field to overcome the kinetic velocity by convection. Second the accelerating of shear electric stress acted on the liquid surface while the liquid was flowing along the fibre, which did not exist in common nozzle. The above two factors all helped to reduce the potential needed to obtain cone-jet mode, and the second effect highly stabilized the spraying. Among high flow rate range, the influence induced by fibre became significant. Also results show for the same flow rate applied potential affected the thickness of liquid layer on fibre surface slightly. In addition, using the present nozzle intermittent spraying could be obtained and controlled by application of pulsed electric potential.

                                Book Description

Jane Kramer never imagined a life selling discount furniture and commuting between grocery stores and soccer fields via minivan. But when her father-in-law has a heart attack, she and her husband, Leon, trade in their glamorous New York life for a stint running the family business on Rockville Pike, a tributary of the suburban sprawl line extending outward from Washington, D.C. Kramer's Discount Furniture Depot sits away from several lanes of traffic, near the tombstone of Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is here that Jane escapes each day at lunchtime to ponder her confusing turn in life.

At age forty-one, she has a teenage Goth son, her husband is increasingly overweight and quick-tempered, and their business is in a state of crisis, both financially and legally. Jane finds herself wishing for something more. First, add to the mix Delia, a mysterious and strangely predatory patio-furniture saleswoman who seems to have her sights set on Leon, and then an attack on the store expansion plans by historic preservationists. When potentially disturbing findings about Delia's past come to light, Jane finds herself learning that, despite life's reversals, it is possible to reinvent herself by tapping into talents and desires she didn't realize she still had.

Rockville Pike is a smart, witty, and funny read that revels in the joy of discovering what life has in store.

                                4 out of 5 stars Rockville.......2006-02-27

I live in Rockville and have always been both fascinated and confused by the location of the Fitzgeralds' graves. It's so utterly bizarre and incongruous, something that I shouldn't be stumbling upon on my way to pick up the laundry. What an interesting plot thread.

                                5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2006-02-21

This is a very nice book -- Except, WAIT -- I think it is about MY LIFE! Ha.

I guess I could really relate to the dismal, suburban setting and the odd suburban characters. I loved the Goth son and his rich friend. The husband was, well, in many ways, pretty typical! Janie manages to rally, but you can see why it wasn't easy for her.

If you are wondering how you ended up in suburbia you'll be able to relate to Janie too.

                                3 out of 5 stars Midlife Melodrama.......2005-09-06

Rockville Pike is told from the perspective of a middle age suburban wife and mother who finds herself living a less than satisfactory life. She works at her husband's family's furniture store in Rockville, Maryland and is the mother of a teenage son recently turned Goth and vegan. This book chronicles her realization that her marriage is floundering, the furniture store is hemmoraging money, and none of this is even similar to the life she once planned to lead. This novel follows her comical and introspective search for answers and the decisions she is faced with regarding how to improve her lot in life.

Susan Coll does an excellent job of capturing the feelings of the disgruntled suburban soccer mom caught in a life that doesn't seem her own. The characters are very well developed and easy to relate to. It is not at all difficult to believe Jane Kramer, the narrator, and how she feels about her husband, job, and child. The downside is that this book drags at times and is occasionally boring. This disappointment is tempered with other sections of the book that are extremely entertaining and funny. Another reason this book is fun for some readers is the references to Rockville, MD and other localities related to this DC suburb.

Overall, this book is mediocre, but portions of the book save it and result in a novel worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fun on the Pike!.......2005-03-25

Angst-ridden and unhappily married Jane Kramer helps her husband Leon run his family's discount furniture store on Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland. Coping is difficult for Jane as she tries at the same time to keep an eye on Delia (a store employee to whom she suspects her husband is attracted), supervise her 16-year-old Goth son who was just suspended from school, and assist fellow soccer-mom Tiffany in running a scrapbooking business.

At the same time, a mystery ensues. Money is disappearing from the store's funds. Who could possibly be taking it? It's not as simple as it sounds.

How Jane deals with all of these problems makes for one hilarious read. The author's hard-hitting, sarcastic humor is timed just right to provide a truly laugh-out loud reading experience.

I absolutely loved the Rockville setting since this city is my hometown. The author did a fantastic job of bringing some true-to-life local color into this story. She used not only the quirky character of the city but also references to F. Scott Fitzgerald who is buried here in Rockville.

Rockville Pike is a fun story with very interesting characters, many of whom you'll be sure not to forget. This is an excellent novel for everyone. No, you do not need to live near Rockville Pike to really enjoy it. I highly recommend it for everyone who likes to laugh.

3 out of 5 stars How Did I Get Here?.......2005-03-23

The Talking Heads' song ONCE IN A LIFETIME comes to mind while reading ROCKVILLE PIKE. Janie is not quite sure how she came to be living in a huge house, working at her husband's family store, and trying to connect with her increasingly distant husband. In addition to the humor and pathos in this tale, there's an odd sense of menace. Who is Delia underneath her makeup and flirty clothes? What is Tracy, the lawyer/scrapbooking consultant, really up to? Where did those old bones found under the store come from? Characters and conflicts come and go, many not really explored or resolved, which is a bit frustrating; there are actually about three potential novels that could come out of ROCKVILLE PIKE. Overall, however, Janie is quite likeable and you want to keep reading in the hope that everything will turn out for her.
