1 out of 5 stars Received hardcover when description clearly said paperback .......2007-06-11

I purchased this book from Amazon because it was cheaper to purchase a paperback through here than from my school bookstore. I was very disappointed to receive a hardcover book. The description of the book I was ordering clearly stated that it was paperback. Had I wanted a hardcover edition, I could have purchased a used one in mint condition for half the price from the bookstore. It was too late to return the book for the correct one (because I received the book right before the class began), so I had to keep it.

    The book itself is great.

    4 out of 5 stars A well-written, well-organized book.......2006-08-21

When the book 1st arrived, I was a little put-off by the jacket cover and the title. "What Smart Trainers Know" sounded like one of those "get rich quick" kind of book titles, or "How to learn how to train in 30 days or your money back!" haha...
Plus, the book is big, thick and 400+ pages so I thought it also might be a slow or boring read.

But the book is very well organized and presents a lot of useful information on the field of T&D in a very interesting and I think somewhat unique manner. I particularly like how each chapter is written by different T&D or I/O Psychological professionals. Plus, they keep the chapters short, so you can really move through the book rather quickly.

And despite it being a thick book, it is very symmetrical so it is easier to carry and to read. Plus the paper is relatively thick, so when you highlight it doesn't bleed through to the other side - I HATE when books do that!

    Overall, very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Advice for Trainers.......2002-08-03

Wow! This book is a Who's Who of the training and development world. Each chapter is written by a leading contributor on the parts of the field they know best. Furthermore, each chapter is practical and accessible to the training practitioner.

This book guides the reader through the very best current thinking in training and development practice. Each chapter is skillfully written and edited to focus on delivering ideas that can --and should-- be applied and used.

For example, Chapter 9 is Judy Hale's Intervention Questionnaire. *NOT* a chapter about why you should use one--in this chapter get the actual questionnaire. Wm. Rothwell's Chapter 16, "The Future of Instructional Design," ends with a worksheet to encourage you to prepare for the changes described in the chapter. Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan in chapter 25 on "Training Games and Activities" includes descriptions of almost 40 types of activities, checklists for game design and evaluation, and tips for facilitation and debriefing. James Kouzes and Barry Posner provide 12 tips to practitioners who help others "Learn to Lead." Rob't Hargrove describes transformational learning in chapter 23 in clear and dynamic terms. Don Kirkpatrick summarizes his 4-level evaluation process, and Jack and Patricia Phillips share their work on Return on Investment.

I'm only hitting the tip of the iceberg. I could easily select seven different chapters, and write how they are just as good as the seven above. There is not a single weak chapter, not a wasted word. I recommend it without reservation.

      Book Description

Could Einstein have possibly anticipated directly testing the most captivating prediction of general relativity, that there exist isolated pockets of spacetime shielded completely from our own? Now, almost a century after that theory emerged, one of the world's leading astrophysicists presents a wealth of recent evidence that just such an entity, with a mass of about three million suns, is indeed lurking at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way--in the form of a supermassive ''black hole''!

With this superbly illustrated, elegantly written, nontechnical account of the most enigmatic astronomical object yet observed, Fulvio Melia captures all the excitement of the growing realization that we are on the verge of actually seeing this exotic object within the next few years.

Melia traces our intellectual pilgrimage to the ''brooding behemoth'' at the heart of the Milky Way. He describes the dizzying technological advances that have recently brought us to the point of seeing through all the cosmic dust to a dark spot in a clouded cluster of stars in the constellation Sagittarius. Carefully assembling the compelling circumstantial evidence for its black hole status, he shows that it is primed to reveal itself as a glorious panorama of activity within this decade--through revolutionary images of its ''event horizon'' against the bright backdrop of nearby, radiating gas.

Uniquely, this book brings together a specific and fascinating astronomical subject--black holes--with a top researcher to provide both amateur and armchair astronomers, but also professional scientists seeking a concise overview of the topic, a real sense of the palpable thrill in the scientific community when an important discovery is imminent.

      4 out of 5 stars Concerning Melia's "Black Hole..".......2006-07-06

The best thing about this book is the series of photos at the beginning which focus in on Sagittarius A*. It is a little thin on theory (purposely); and at the end, he is a little too gung-ho about the ability of science to answer all questions. But in general it is an exciting subject and the author presents it very well.

5 out of 5 stars Very excited about this book.......2004-08-27

This is an exciting book for just about anyone interested in astronomy.
First of all I'd like to express all my admiration, the book is really
      wonderfully written, witty, elegant, always
crystal clear and never boring, a real pleasure for the
mind. Second of all it's a real surprise to see how close
astronomers are to actually seeing a black hole. Since things
are changing so fast, does the author plan on writing an updated
edition soon? It seems that a new edition would be necessary
      in a few years.

3 out of 5 stars passionate, he is - but it's hard to follow.......2004-05-09

Apparently Sgr A* is shrinking - at various points in the book, it's described as the size of Mars' orbit, the size of Mercury's orbit, and several times the diameter of the Sun. Then there's the "how fast are the nearby stars going", in units of millions of kilometers per hour in one chapter, and kilometers per second in another - unit confusion! It's an enjoyable book, but somewhat choppy in nature - he introduces a segment on Hawking radiation, then mentions that it's totally useless in detection for supermassive black holes. The descriptions of Sgr A* are well done at the various wavelengths and very helpful; the background on why each wavelength conveys certain information was particularly excellent.
Now: why go to Australia to look at the Milky Way?

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating indeed.......2004-02-01

The subject of this book has been one of my abiding interests since high school. My daughter strongly recommended it to me, with the assurance that it contained one of the best descriptions of general relativity for the layman, woven into the captivating story of the black hole at the center of our galaxy. Finally, someone who is directly involved with frontline research on this topic has taken the time to write about it in language that nonexperts can understand. Why is it that others don't do the same?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Detective Story.......2004-02-01

Hooray for Carolyn Collins Petersen, who wrote a review of this book for the January issue of Sky and Telescope. She absolutely captured the essence of this worthwhile read, and convinced me to pick up a copy of my own. I agree with her assessment wholeheartedly. Melia's book is a detective story, but more than that, it's an up-to-date account of what black hole astronomers are aiming for. The only thing I was somewhat disappointed with was that the last chapter ended too early. The subject of supermassive black holes in general deserves a lengthier discussion.

From the supplier: The incorporation of bound antioxidants to hydrogenated styrene-butadiene rubber (HSBR) offers improved aging and ultraviolet resistance. These polymer-bound antioxidants, especially amine-type antioxidants used in moderately hydrogenated HSBRs, can lead to the development of superior HSBRs compared to those without a bound antioxidant. Additionally, the addition of a bound antioxidant does not effect the use of the latex diimide reduction, which can produce HSBR.

Though the Berlin Wall has fallen, we find ourselves still struggling with an even older enemy in the eternal Common Cold War. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has studied the link between Epstein-Barr virus and human cancer for years, and she casts a wary eye through the electron microscope to check up on them and report on our strange and occasionally deadly symbiosis in The Invisible Enemy.

This slim book, scholarly but accessible, examines these barely living (or unliving, depending on whom you ask) gene packages with a strong emphasis on their disease-causing antics and the intellectual heroics of the various campaigns of eradication and control humans have waged for centuries. Though biological relativists might cringe occasionally at Crawford's dogged humanocentrism, few of them would really pine for the days of smallpox or embrace the raging HIV pandemic if pressed. Crawford looks at the wake of devastation left by these two viruses as well as her own favorite subject, which is strongly implicated in the formation of many cancers. Going a bit farther afield, she explains the weird behavior of the nongenetic reproduction of prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy; though these scary proteins aren't viruses by any definition, their behavior is similar enough to warrant inclusion. The Invisible Enemy, calmer than its title would suggest, provokes a sense of optimism in the reader. Though the war might last forever, we can hope for fewer and fewer casualties as the years go by. --Rob Lightner

                Book Description

Viruses are disarmingly small and simple. None the less, the smallpox virus killed over 300 million people in the 20th century prior to its eradication in 1980. The AIDS virus, HIV, is now the single most common cause of death in Africa. In recent years, the outbreaks of several lethal viruses such as Ebola and hanta virus have caused great public concern. In her fascinating and vividly written book, Dorothy Crawford describes all aspects of the natural history of these deadly parasites, explaining how they differ from other microorganisms. She looks at the havoc viruses have caused in the past, where they have come from, and the detective work involved in uncovering them. Finally, she considers whether a new virus could potentially wipe out the human race. This is an informative and highly readable book, which will be read by all those seeking a deeper understanding of these minute but remarkably efficient killers.

                5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2006-03-07

This is a nice book about viruses. The book is slightly technical, but reading it while able to access wikipedia should do it, if you want to understand each detail.

Recently I came across a theory came which says that viruses played a crucial role in the evolution of humans. After reading this book the above theory made sense to me.

It reads like a novel and yet the info is present in every sentence. The author is clearly beyond knowledgable about the topic. I would recommend this book to anyone . Truely amazing!

"The Invisible Enemy" offers a thorough and useful approach to virology without using excessive amounts of medical and scientific jargon. It is especially useful to those of us who have experienced a lapse in time since studying formal virology or medical microbiology. This book is an entertaining overview of several of the more recent discoveries in the field of virological infectious disease. It should be of interest to any student of the physical sciences, or researchers/practicioners of the medicinal craft.

1 out of 5 stars Merely uninformed opinions, nothing more.......2007-01-04

This book reads like the author sat down, watched each film once and then tried to write up a "funny" opinion. No research (beyond maybe IMDB), no insight, no context, no behind-the-scenes information, no interviews --- nothing. In other words, anyone could have written this book. What's worse is he gets a lot of information wrong -- it's so lazy. For example he delights in describing how confusing the TV movie "Flood!" is, but he is clearly reviewing it from the old edited VHS release, not the original movie. This information is so easy to locate, but I suppose research might have gotten in the way of the "jokes". Maybe it would be forgivable if the jokes were funny, but they're not -- just boring and obvious. If you've ever been trapped standing in a movie line and forced to listen to some "know-it-all" guy's self-absorbed and wrong-headed yammering about movies he feels superior to -- that's exactly what reading this book is like. A real shame.

4 out of 5 stars I'm still waiting for the ultimative Disaster-Movies-Reference-Work.......2006-12-28

In meantime there exists more Disaster Movies on the screens, than stars on heaven. For the fan it becomes harder and harder to keep the overview. It seems that the autors had the same problems. They write about all sub-genres from water, lava, earthquakes,to airplanes, snow till radioactivity and fire. They even have chapters about swarms of killeranimals, parodies and invasion from outer space, but they only grat on the surface. For a reference-work this book is far too incomplete. Not a must for the filmbuff but ok for a beginner. For a filmbook they could have included more pictures !

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!!! A Total Waste Of Money!!.......2006-09-22

What a huge disappointment! Really boring infantile reviews and some Really throwaway extras. I would love to have my money and time back. It's written by 2 Canadians and their choices are really lame. The color posters in the middle are the biggest disappointment. What kind of Disaster genre book wouldn't include The Poseidon Adventure (the greatest disaster poster of all time), Titanic or any of the good movies. Save your money!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Look at Cinematic 'Guilty Pleasures!'.......2006-08-29

Movie fans who have either marveled or groaned their way through the likes of 'Earthquake,' 'The Swarm,' 'Beyond the Poseidon Adventure,' 'A Night to Remember' or 'Towering Inferno' should enjoy this amusing look at Disaster Movies.

Disaster movies are one of life's guilty pleasures. You can turn off your mind, grab the bucket of popcorn and enjoy. OK, the special effects may be cheesy and the dialogue awful - not to mention the one-dimensional characters and the holes in the plot a mile wide - but it's a disaster movie, for Peter's sake, so enjoy!

Key and Rose take the reader through the world of disaster movies, beginning with flicks from the '30s. They divide the films into categories like "Sinking Ships," "Hot Molten Lava," "Those Darn Aliens," etc. and devote 2-5 pages on each film, giving potted plot summaries, highpoints/lowpoints and cracking wise. The book has a five-tier rating system, ranging from "Highly Recommended" to "So Bad it's Good" and also includes lists such as the greatest disaster movie stars, highest-grossing disaster films, disaster movie love themes and so on.

Frankly I enjoyed the book. It's funny, informative and dishes out some well-deserved criticisms about its subject.

                                  Ex-wife!

My youngest son Jamarl was very upset when my wife and I separated. After being together for all eight years of his life he just couldn’t understand why we couldn’t resolve our differences. I remember one day he walked over to me and asked,

                                  Jamarl: “Dad…What’s an orgasm?”

                                  Me: “What?”

Jamarl: “An orgasm dad, an orgasm.”

Me: “Were did you hear that word?”

Jamarl: “I heard it from mom. She was talking to someone on the telephone and she said that you couldn’t give her one and that’s the reason why she left you…. Dad, I have an idea. I’ll save up my allowance and help you buy an orgasm.”
