Customer Reviews:
Received hardcover when description clearly said paperback .......2007-06-11
A well-written, well-organized book.......2006-08-21
Best Contemporary Advice for Trainers.......2002-08-03
This book guides the reader through the very best current thinking in training and development practice. Each chapter is skillfully written and edited to focus on delivering ideas that can --and should-- be applied and used.
For example, Chapter 9 is Judy Hale's Intervention Questionnaire. *NOT* a chapter about why you should use one--in this chapter get the actual questionnaire. Wm. Rothwell's Chapter 16, "The Future of Instructional Design," ends with a worksheet to encourage you to prepare for the changes described in the chapter. Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan in chapter 25 on "Training Games and Activities" includes descriptions of almost 40 types of activities, checklists for game design and evaluation, and tips for facilitation and debriefing. James Kouzes and Barry Posner provide 12 tips to practitioners who help others "Learn to Lead." Rob't Hargrove describes transformational learning in chapter 23 in clear and dynamic terms. Don Kirkpatrick summarizes his 4-level evaluation process, and Jack and Patricia Phillips share their work on Return on Investment.
I'm only hitting the tip of the iceberg. I could easily select seven different chapters, and write how they are just as good as the seven above. There is not a single weak chapter, not a wasted word. I recommend it without reservation.

The Black Hole at the Center of Our Galaxy
Fulvio Melia Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691095051 |
Book Description
Could Einstein have possibly anticipated directly testing the most captivating prediction of general relativity, that there exist isolated pockets of spacetime shielded completely from our own? Now, almost a century after that theory emerged, one of the world's leading astrophysicists presents a wealth of recent evidence that just such an entity, with a mass of about three million suns, is indeed lurking at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way--in the form of a supermassive ''black hole''!
With this superbly illustrated, elegantly written, nontechnical account of the most enigmatic astronomical object yet observed, Fulvio Melia captures all the excitement of the growing realization that we are on the verge of actually seeing this exotic object within the next few years.
Melia traces our intellectual pilgrimage to the ''brooding behemoth'' at the heart of the Milky Way. He describes the dizzying technological advances that have recently brought us to the point of seeing through all the cosmic dust to a dark spot in a clouded cluster of stars in the constellation Sagittarius. Carefully assembling the compelling circumstantial evidence for its black hole status, he shows that it is primed to reveal itself as a glorious panorama of activity within this decade--through revolutionary images of its ''event horizon'' against the bright backdrop of nearby, radiating gas.
Uniquely, this book brings together a specific and fascinating astronomical subject--black holes--with a top researcher to provide both amateur and armchair astronomers, but also professional scientists seeking a concise overview of the topic, a real sense of the palpable thrill in the scientific community when an important discovery is imminent.

The Invisible Enemy: A Natural History of Viruses

Though the Berlin Wall has fallen, we find ourselves still struggling with an even older enemy in the eternal Common Cold War. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has studied the link between Epstein-Barr virus and human cancer for years, and she casts a wary eye through the electron microscope to check up on them and report on our strange and occasionally deadly symbiosis in The Invisible Enemy. This slim book, scholarly but accessible, examines these barely living (or unliving, depending on whom you ask) gene packages with a strong emphasis on their disease-causing antics and the intellectual heroics of the various campaigns of eradication and control humans have waged for centuries. Though biological relativists might cringe occasionally at Crawford's dogged humanocentrism, few of them would really pine for the days of smallpox or embrace the raging HIV pandemic if pressed. Crawford looks at the wake of devastation left by these two viruses as well as her own favorite subject, which is strongly implicated in the formation of many cancers. Going a bit farther afield, she explains the weird behavior of the nongenetic reproduction of prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy; though these scary proteins aren't viruses by any definition, their behavior is similar enough to warrant inclusion. The Invisible Enemy, calmer than its title would suggest, provokes a sense of optimism in the reader. Though the war might last forever, we can hope for fewer and fewer casualties as the years go by. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Viruses are disarmingly small and simple. None the less, the smallpox virus killed over 300 million people in the 20th century prior to its eradication in 1980. The AIDS virus, HIV, is now the single most common cause of death in Africa. In recent years, the outbreaks of several lethal viruses such as Ebola and hanta virus have caused great public concern. In her fascinating and vividly written book, Dorothy Crawford describes all aspects of the natural history of these deadly parasites, explaining how they differ from other microorganisms. She looks at the havoc viruses have caused in the past, where they have come from, and the detective work involved in uncovering them. Finally, she considers whether a new virus could potentially wipe out the human race. This is an informative and highly readable book, which will be read by all those seeking a deeper understanding of these minute but remarkably efficient killers.Customer Reviews:

Ex-wife!
My youngest son Jamarl was very upset when my wife and I separated. After being together for all eight years of his life he just couldn’t understand why we couldn’t resolve our differences. I remember one day he walked over to me and asked,
Jamarl: “Dad…What’s an orgasm?”
Me: “What?”
Jamarl: “An orgasm dad, an orgasm.”
Me: “Were did you hear that word?”
Jamarl: “I heard it from mom. She was talking to someone on the telephone and she said that you couldn’t give her one and that’s the reason why she left you…. Dad, I have an idea. I’ll save up my allowance and help you buy an orgasm.”
