Introductory Accounting for Non-Specialists is aimed at a single-semester module in accounting and finance. The text provides a first-level look at financial and managerial accounting and basic finance for non-specialist students. The approach is to achieve a balance between the technical aspects and underlying concepts. The book is aimed at users of accounting information. Students (as future users of accounting information) need to understand the basic ideas and assumptions that lie behind the numbers. They do not need to become expert preparers of accounting information but should know enough of the mechanics to make sense of the sources of the numbers, and to understand how new information would change (for example) the profit/balance sheet position. The “quadrant” system of analyzing transactions is used as a model that allows non-specialists to develop an insight into how double-entry works. The overall key objective is to enable the reader to critically analyse and discuss both the external financial reporting and the internal management information aspects of accounting at an introductory level. In other words, having studied the book students should be able to understand and be able to apply the ideas and techniques presented and to evaluate the usefulness and limitations of them. The book is pedagogically well developed and includes learning objectives, tasks, examples, case studies, diagrams, summaries, review questions and exam questions. Answers are provided to the majority of the review and exam questions at the back of the book.

The Human side of Enterprise is like a perfect baby with 10 fingers and 10 toes. The Annotations of Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld are like adding an extra-chromosome to perfection. It's not absolute disaster, but there's really no reason to transform Douglas McGregor's master piece into an episode of Life Goes On. Just stick to the original.

Answer this Multiple Choice as to how Joel Cuthcher experiences Eros:

Marked by Originality of Ideas.......2000-10-28

This book is a collection of John Barrow's 42 essays mostly published between 1980 and 1998, but none of the topics treated has become out-of-date. Each piece of essay makes a chapter, and all the chapters are grouped into 10 parts. A short introduction in each part clearly sets the theme common to all the chapters of that part as well as the specific subjects of the chapters.

The title of every chapter is quite attractive to those interested in the fundamental problems of physics and cosmology and in their relations to, or a physicist's view of, other disciplines of mathematics, aesthetics and religion. Barrow's writings are sometimes not easy to follow, but are marked by originality of ideas.

For example: In the chapter "Why is the Universe mathematical?" the author first mentions that the sorts of answers depend upon what we think mathematics. Then he puts a puzzle, which is more fundamental in the laws of Nature, symmetry or computation. In the final paragraphs, Barrow states that the science is the search for algorithmic compressions of the world of experience, and comes to the conclusion that mathematics is useful in the description of the physical world because the world is algorithmically compressible. I have difficulty in finding how the earlier paragraphs are related to the last ones. However, the conclusion seems to be simple and persuasive, and would be paraphrased as follows: Mathematics is useful in the description of Nature because she has the characters of orderly complexity.

Only if you haven't read other books by Barrow and want to know his ideas, this would be a good buy.

I'm a fan of Barrow's, but this book is repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. It's a collection of pieces he did for various publications and everything in it is said more clearly in Impossibility or Pi in the Sky or others of his stimulating books. Save your money and buy one of those rather than this deflationary rehash.

The idea that materials can be designed to satisfy specific performance requirements is relatively new. With high-performance composites, however, the entire process of designing and fabricating a part can be worked out before manufacturing. The purpose of this book is to present an integrated approach to the design and manufacturing of products from advanced composites. It shows how the basic behavior of composites and their constitutive relationships can be used during the design stage, which minimizes the complexity of manufacturing composite parts and reduces the repetitive "design-build-test" cycle. Designing it right the first time is going to determine the competitiveness of a company, the reliability of the part, the robustness of fabrication processes, and ultimately, the cost and development time of composite parts. Most of all, it should expand the use of advanced composite parts in fields that use composites only to a limited extent at this time. To achieve these goals, this book presents the design and fabrication of novel composite parts made for machine tools and other applications like robots and automobiles. This book is suitable as a textbook for graduate courses in the design and fabrication of composites. It will also be of interest to practicing engineers learning about composites and axiomatic design. A CD-ROM is included in every copy of the book, containing Axiomatic CLPT software. This is a good book to read if you don't know much about composites mfg and you want an technical explanation of how to do it. I use the term technical loosley because it is not go to deep into the technical side but gives the technical aspects just enough justice to help understand if you knew nothing beforehand.

Fibre Science and Technology is one of six titles in a coherent and definitive series of volumes dedicated to advanced composite materials research, development and usage in the former Soviet Union. This volume deals with the basic components of a composite material, namely the reinforcement and the encasing matrix material. Beginning with a specification of a range of reinforcing fibres (glass, carbon, organic, inorganic, ceramic), the book then considers in detail the development of such fibres and the significant range of properties achieved. An extensive test methodology used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of each type of fibre matrix combination is presented, and the production method employed for each constituent part is described.

Her younger sister, Petra, is employed as a cartographer in the US Land Office, rather against her will. As a friend of Colonel Erbe, and chief of the Land Office cartographic section, he tries to help the young women and becomes entangled in their lives.
