Fine Combination of Information and How To.......2001-08-17

As interested in diversity management as I am, I find much of the written material a bit dry and academic. Perhaps writers compensate for the strong feelings that this work brings up by trying to create some sense of distance. In any case, there is a real lack of simple, down to earth texts that are both effective and easy to assimilate. "Voices of Diversity" is the exception to all of this. As the subtitle indicates, the material in the book is based on the content of interviews and discussions with many individuals, and the vitality of their expression permeates the entire work.

The book starts out with some generic introductory material and then starts to go through the interview findings in a straightforward, group by group fashion. There are seperate chapters on African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, recent immigrants, workers with disabilities, younger and older workers, gays and lesbians, women, and white men. Two groups that were left out, which I feel should have been included are Jewish and Arab-American which are often, mistakenly lumped together with white male. Nor is much attention paid to religious or socio-economic diversity.

The chapters themselves start out with general discussion. They then go on to introduce the statements made by interviewees and discuss the stories behind them. Then several scenarios of workplace situations are introduced. After each scenario sections discuss what went wrong and what might have been done differently. I found this material very useful. Getting some insight into how the affected people felt and what they thought is tremendously useful in getting to the source of the real problem. The material on what should have been done provides good examples of simple, considerate and respectful behavior which could be the basis for finding common ground and resolving issues.

The book dates from 1994, but is still quite timely in 2001. Renee Blank and Sandra Slipp have a crisp, clear writing style that makes for easy reading. Not only is the book good reference material, but it would be a fine teaching tool for a discussion group. I would recommend "Voices of Diversity" for everyone's diversity reading list.

Down-to-earth Manual.. Extremely well written.......1999-08-20

I am reading this book for a leadership program and have found a jewel. I am thoroughly enjoying the real-life examples of discrimination experienced by the various demographic groups. The book is written in layman's language, and without being blunt, its examples and how-to instructions are clear to the reader. I strongly suggest this to managers or staff members willing to learn more about diversity and how it fits into the workplace.

After studying in Illinois for two years, well I wouldn't call what I was doing STUDYING, I happened upon this book. I saw the light! It is so clear, user friendly and succinct. I feel that I owe the authors something. As you can see, I've crossed a couple borders over to Ohio. Thank goodness the publishers make many many state editions. Never too much of a good thing. The sixteenth edition of this book comes with a study CD-ROM which is fabulous. If you've "studied" real estate and have yet to pass your exam, just take the quizzes over and over until you achieve 90-100% accuracy. That will be soon and you will blaze through the state exam.

The only reason I am filing this review is that I want to correct a comment that is on this page (page reviewing the 8th edition of the book). An old review of the book has been placed on this page erroneously. It refers to the book's being out of date. It is referring to a much earlier edition of the book and was reviewing that edition of it. The book on this page is the latest edition, the 8th, published in August of 2004. I just used it myself this fall term of 2004, and will be teaching from it again this winter semester of 2005. It is completely updated. You will discover that if you buy earlier editions, also for sale on amazon, that they are out of date. I insist that my students use the 8th edition and made them return earlier ones. An out-of-date text is of little use in our classroom.

The text does a superb job of covering real estate law essentials in Ohio, however, there due to recent (1996) legislation, two of the largest and most important chapters are out of date and must be re-written!!! These surveys and analyses address procedure and practice issues, as well as potential claims, defenses, and remedies. The third edition contains 528 pages of text, plus a table of cases (86 pages and 1,996 cases) and a detailed index (42 pages). The author, Peter M. Iskin, is a 1973 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. He is the Director of the Law Reform Unit of The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and is the foremost authority on Ohio eviction and landlord-tenant law.

Of the two available books on Ohio landlord/tenant law, this is by far the better... and luckily, by far the cheaper. If you're considering buying one of the two, in my opinion this is definitely the one you should go for. It is far more complete, dealing with issues that its competition doesn't discuss, and is much less tenant-oriented.

THE best practitioners manual for landlord/tenant law in OH.......2004-07-27

As a Legal Aid Attorney, I am frequently assigned landlord/tenant cases to either negotiate or litigate on behalf of tenants. I consider Peter's book on the subject my bible, and it is an indespensible part of the desk copies that I have. If you are an attorney litigating this subject matter in Ohio, and do not have a copy of Peter's book available as a reference, you are undoubtedly unprepared.

Frederic White has covered just about everything in here. While the book may take a long time to ship, it is worth whatever wait you have to endure. You probably have a year long lease anyway. The book provides an excellent overview to Ohio Landlord Tenant Law, and gets into specifics as well. If you have a question, this book very likely has your answer if you are serious about finding it. An excellent reference manual. I have it in my law office to this day.

This is an excellent book and is presented in a question and answer format which allows you to find a direct answer to your question easily. It also provides sample pleadings and forms for tenants and landlords. If you are going to be a renter for a year or more, I highly recommend this book to not only find answers to current landlord tenant problems but also prevent problems from happening in the first place. This is an excellent guide to Ohio Landlord Tenant Law.

The SCIENCE TEACHER's Companion.......2001-05-22

The Scientific Companion by Cesare Emiliani is one of the most important reference works on the shelves in my high school science classroom. I wore out my copy of the first edition and snapped up a copy of the second edition when it came out in 1995. It is primarily a physical science reference, but I think it would prove useful as a reference for a life science teacher also. It has a lot of those physical science facts and equations that you need, but don't want to memorize: the mass of a proton and a neutron in atomic mass units, the masses and mass numbers of all the isotopes, the names of the quarks, conversion factors, a great periodic table, and lots of other basic stuff. Each chapter is a concise refresher course on a basic physical science subject. I think you'll find this book as indispensable as I do.

This book condenses what is usually a gruelling two-semester curriculum into a brief but thorough text that can be navigated in a single semester. Concepts are summarized in easy to understand color tables. Each chapter contains an interesting aside/biography to keep students awake and show that the knowledge has important applications. The periodic table of elements and lists of primary organic functional groups are summarized inside the hard cover for quick reference. A solutions manual for the homework problems is sold separately.

Best book on dinosaurs ever - till the next edition..........2006-01-09

This is a technical book on dinosaurs, covering their systematics, anatomy, diversity, ecology, distribution, physiology, and many other topics, written by leading experts in the field of dinosaur research. It has been completely updated and largely rewritten from the first edition, and the editors did a great job in keeping a common structure especially to the first chapters despite the high number of authors involved.
In the first part of this book, each group of dinosaurs is introduced, with a detailed description of the anatomy, systematics, and ecology of the animals included. The second section starts with an extremely helpful overview of dinosaur localities known from around the globe and then illuminates topics such as dinosaur biogeography, physiology, and extinction. The book is complemented with an extensive list of technical references of dinosaurs, which will be invaluable for any student of these amazing creatures.
Though not necessarily aimed at the general reader, it is certainly a must have for anybody interested in natural history, dinosaurs, or palaeontology in general. This is, arguably, the best, but certainly the most informative book on dinosaurs yet published!

The Dinosauria.......2004-10-13

"The Dinosauria" edited by David B. Weihampel, Peter Dodson, and Halszka Osmolska is for the serious dinophile and for those with some science and paleontology backgrounds. This book should NOT be tackled by the casual reader as it can be very serious when reading this volume on comparitive anatomy of dinosaur bones.

I found "The Dinosauria" to be very well-written and very informative and it gives the reader a clue to the nature of dinosaurs through their bone structure. The first section covers a broad area of interest, mainly the evolutionary relationships of dinosaurs within the wider context of archosaurian descent. The behaviorial attributes are next and what did they possess. Also, how does one analyze them from the paleontological and modern biological perspectives? In this first section, the question is posed, as to how the dinosaurs became extinct as a group.

In the second section each group of animals receives a detailed treatment, beginning with its anatomy. This is a comprehesive review of the taxonomy and systematic relationships at the level of genus and species. Here the dicussion focuses on the aspects of the fossil record, preservation, paleogeography, paleoecology, and life habits of that particular group.

I found "The Dinosauria" to be a solid five star book that is as close to being current as can be expected. Written by experts in their respected fields this book is well-edited and progresses in a very logical manor. "The Dinosauria" is a benchmark reference book. For those interested in vertebrate paleontology, students, serious amateurs, and those in need of serious authoritive information this is the book for you. "The Dinosauria" is NOT a childrens book nor is it intended to be.

"The Dinosauria" belongs on the bookshelves of all serious dinophiles and of those wanting a near complete reference book. The bibiography, alone, contains more than 2,500 enteries and is well appointed with references making your search for authoritive information an easier task.

All It Is Cracked Up To Be And More!.......2001-04-15

What more can I say for this book than has already been said? The first book of it's kind (that I know of), The Dinosauria is the perfect introduction into SERIOUS paleontology. If you want to know more about dinosaurs than you learn from Jurassic Park, this is the place to start. Be warned though, a basic knowledge of the science of paleontology is needed as the book does go deeper into the realm of true science than in other popular books. The Dinosauria layed the foundation for works that would follow, and again this is the perfect introduction for someone who wants to get more serious about the real science of the Dinosauria.

A professional reference book.......1998-08-10

This work was a bit tedious, as any book of this magnitude can be, especially to someone without a PHD, like me. If, however you are aspiring for that PHD, or are a very serious amateur paleontologist, this book is great. It is the most in-depth book I have ever found on the subject. Most books are significantly watered down, as their intended audience is often teenage or younger. This book supplies enormous quantities of information in a fairly usable format. I just wished that there had been more illustrations, perhaps some pictures of different excavation sites and more actual fossil examples, instead of mere drawings. Perhaps this was done for cost effectiveness, as this book is very expensive for someone on a budget. The bone anatomy is very well shown though, and can be studied with the help of this book. I would recommend it for anyone who is serious about paleontology, but please, if you are not, check out another book, as this one may be a dissapointment with a! big price tag.

Humorous and Thought Provoking.......2000-10-03

From start to finish the outlook and philosophy of the writer is very on target with today. The characters and story line bring you right into a very amusing world with lively characters who are making their way through a very difficult world. The momemnt you start reading this book, it makes you think and it makes you laugh.....the humor is outstanding. This book would be a great movie, or a series of movies!
