    Book Description

Following the severe financial crises of the 1990s, identifying and assessing financial sector vulnerabilities has become a key priority of the international community. The costly disruptions in global markets underscored the need to establish a set of monitorable variables for evaluating strengths and weaknesses in financial institutions and to alert authorities of impending problems. These variables, indicators of financial system health and stability known collectively as "macroprudential indicators," are the subject of this Occasional Paper by the Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department and the Statistics Department. Macroprudential indicators take measures at both the level of aggregated financial institutions and at the macroeconomic level; financial crises often occur when weaknesses are identified in both. The authors provide a breakdown and explanations of these indicators and a review of the theoretical and empirical work done thus far. Work at other international and multilateral institutions is included, as well as the experiences of several national central banks and supervisory agencies. This paper provides a valuable reference source of current knowledge about macroprudential indicators and issues related to their analysis, identification, measurement, and possible dissemination.

              Book Description

The solar system has always been a messy place in which gravity wreaks havoc. Moons form, asteroids and comets crash into planets, ice ages commence, and dinosaurs disappear. By describing the dramatic consequences of such disturbances, this authoritative and entertaining book reveals the fundamental interconnectedness of the solar system--and what it means for life on Earth.

After relating a brief history of the solar system, Alan Rubin describes how astronomers determined our location in the Milky Way. He provides succinct and up-to-date accounts of the energetic interactions among planetary bodies, the generation of the Earth's magnetic field, the effects of other solar-system objects on our climate, the moon's genesis, the heating of asteroids, and the origin of the mysterious tektites. Along the way, Rubin introduces us to the individual scientists--including the famous, the now obscure, and the newest generation of researchers--who have enhanced our understanding of the galactic neighborhood. He shows how scientific discoveries are made; he discusses the uncertainty that presides over the boundaries of knowledge as well as the occasional reluctance of scientists to change their minds even when confronted by compelling evidence. This fresh historical perspective reveals science as it is: an imperfect but self-correcting enterprise.

Journeying to the frontiers of knowledge, Rubin concludes with the exciting realm of astrobiology. He chronicles the history of the search for life on Mars and describes cutting-edge lines of astrobiological inquiry, including panspermia (the possible transfer of life from planet to planet), the likelihood of technologically advanced alien civilizations in our galaxy, and our probable responses to alien contact.

Authoritative and up-to-date but also entertaining and fluidly written, Disturbing the Solar System will appeal to any reader who has ever picked up a rock or gazed at the moon with a sense of wonder.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful history of the Earth and the Solar System.......2002-08-24

This is a marvelous and wide-ranging book. It is written at a level that is accessible to high school students or precocious elementary/middle school students. However, it also satisfies the needs of a senior scientist (namely me) who wants to review current knowledge in this area. The book covers the history of the Solar System, including the formation of the Earth and the origin of the Moon. Current knowledge of asteroids and meteorites, the latter one of the author's specialties, is summarized accurately without boring the reader to tears. The story of giant impacts and mass extinctions, as in the demise of the dinosaurs, is well told. The author carefully explains the evidence that certain meteorites found on Earth were blasted off the Moon and that other meteorites are from Mars. The discussion of the controversy over possible life forms in Martian meteorites is up to the minute. The book concludes with a summary of current thinking about alien life forms and the possibility of life elsewherein the Universe. In the preface, the author states his intention to show that science is an imperfect enterprise. He succeeds admirably, presenting a balanced view of current controversies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First Book from Meteoriticist Dr. Rubin.......2002-08-09

Dr. Alan Rubin's first book covers an extremely diverse (but interrelated) range of topics, including solar system evolution, orbital resonances, mass extinctions, asteroids, meteorites, tektites, craters, volcanism, plate tectonics, magnetic pole reversals, planetary rings, moons, comets, the evolution of life, and even the Drake Equation and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. No matter how broad your background might be in astronomy, physics, chemistry and biology, you are still likely to find a few topics or theories in this book that you've never been exposed to before.

For me, I'd never made the connection that domesticatable animals might be a requirement for a technologically advanced civilization. And while I'd read a number of books (both fiction and non-fiction) suggesting that life might not have evolved if it weren't for our planet's large moon, I had not previously read that the Moon stabilizes the tilt of the earth's axis. I knew about the Moon's role in nutation of the earth's axis, but was not aware that French astronomers had recently performed a computer simulation of what would happen to the earth's axis over time if the Moon were absent. (Gravitational interaction between the planets and earth's equatorial bulge would cause the obliquity of the ecliptic to vary chaotically over relatively small time periods -- millions of years. Such unstable seasons would lead to extreme global climatic fluctuations, making it much more difficult for life to establish itself.)

As you might expect, there are many dozens of photographs, diagrams, graphs and illustrations scattered throughout. Indeed, this is the first book I've ever seen that contained pictures of the plaque aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft, the pictogram sent out by the Arecibo dish back in 1974 toward M13, photographs of crater chains on Callisto and the Moon, and a table of all the magnetic pole reversals -- all in one place. It will make a nice reference book whenever I need to find something fast.

There is a fairly extensive 18-page glossary covering most of the technical terms in the book, and there are also 10 pages of chapter by chapter references for additional reading. Rubin obviously spent a lot of time putting all of this together.

Of course, in any technical book there are bound to be typos and errors, though I found very few. Page 94, for instance, has a confusing phrase "...gravitational resonance between the Moon and the debris disk..." I believe he meant ~earth~ and the debris disk. The most glaring mistake I found is that Figure 11.2 on pg. 164 is misidentified as being a partial eclipse of the earth when it is merely a crescent earth. There are a couple of minor errors in the glossary -- see if you can spot the problems with the definitions of arcsecond and parsec.

Overall, the book is well-written in plain English that you don't need a PhD is astrodynamics to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to expand their appreciation of just how fortunate we are to be alive on this little blue ball.

5 out of 5 stars Best Science Book In A Long Time.......2002-07-12

I really enjoyed reading this book and I compliment and commend the writing style of Alan Rubin in "Disturbing The Solar System".

It is rare to find books on science written in such readable and understandable prose. It was quite a pleasure to read this book!

It is also my opinion that most authors of science related publications could learn something (and probably sell more books!) by observing Mr. Rubin's writing style.

              Book Description

This second edition of a highly acclaimed text provides a clear and complete description of diffusion in fluids. It retains the features that won praise for the first edition--informal style, emphasis on physical insight and basic concepts, and lots of simple examples. The new edition offers increased coverage of unit operations, with chapters on absorption, distillation, extraction, and adsorption. New chapters on membranes and drug release broaden the book's scope. The entire text is extensively illustrated, and many new worked examples and homework problems have been added.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting and good book.......2006-07-02

I think this book is really a good book for students, and for people who want to refresh their understandings about diffusion.
I am now interested in diffusion in polymer/solvents solution during coated film is being dried. The drying mechanism is complicated as this is a moving boundary problem, accompanying multi-component diffusion in the coated layer and solvents evaporation from the surface.
This book contains little topics relating to the above, but still I felt the necessity of returning to fundamentals, and read this book.
The writing style of this book is very frank, viz. the author expresses his value judgments and opinions based on his experiences. If I were young, I would like to take his lessons using this book.
I couldn't understand why ratings hear are so much spreading.

1 out of 5 stars Terribly Confusing Mass Transfer Book.......2003-04-23

I would strongly discourge using this book to try and learn mass transfer. We used this book in Purdue's mass transfer course and the classmates I spoke with agreed -- this book was extremely confusing and took a "hand wave" approach when solving the difficult mathematics. A much better book is Transport Phenomena by Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot.

              1 out of 5 stars frustrating!.......2002-04-19

This is definitely not a book for those who really wants to learn mass transfer and unit operations. The author only skims through the important concepts and the examples are either over simplified or irrelevant. The example questions are full of mistakes and the answers provided are wrong. For the studious chemical engineering student who is interested to understand the important concepts of mass transfer, stay away from this book. This book totally mess me up. Now I am using Transport Processes by Geankoplis, which is in my opinion, more direct and conventional, and easy to understand than Cussler, who writes the textbook like a story book!! The Mass Transfer section in the book Transport Phenomena by Bird also do better justice to this subject even though it is more suited for graduate students. My advice: Don't use this book if you want to grasp unit operations well.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOKS FOR STUDENTS !.......1999-09-12

This is an excellent book to learn the basics of Separation Processes. Cussler managed to explain Chemical Engineering concepts in a very easy way to understand by students. I was lucky to get him as my lecturer several years ago to learn Separation processes.

                  4 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-07-30

Having only a cursory knowledge about human pre-history, I asked a colleague in the anthropology department for a good primer. He gave me this. It was a veritable cornicoupia of information, even as the authors sought to provide their own answers to quesitons of acadmeic controversey.

The central question Stringer and Gamble seek to answer is: are modern humans kin to Neaderthals, or are we distantly related? In answering this, readers are treated to a briefing on the ice age world of the Lower and Middle Paleolithic, the relation of Neanderthals to other early humans, the way in which Neanderthals have been understood (and seen) by science and the public, before the book really hits its stride in disucssing the archaeology of Neanderthal sites and what they tell us about these early humans.

The authors belive that modern humans are related to (rather than directly from) Neanderthals, and that by the Upper Paleolithic, were being replaced by modern humans coming out of Africa ("Out of Africa II"). The evidence in support of this is strong, although not overwhelming: mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) as well as behavioural data are primarily used.

In all, it was a worthwhile and fascinating read, and certainly provides more depth on the specific case of Neanderthals than other books on early humans.

                  4 out of 5 stars Well done..........2001-04-28

The authors really do a great job in doing a detailed study of Neanderthals, their lives and their world. They catalogue the fossils found, examine how we know what we know from the bones, tools and even the ash from the fires.
The only problem is that the book was published in 1993-1994 and does not take into account later DNA tests and the four-year-old child who lived five thousand years after the last of the Neanderthals SHOULD of died (found in 1999)who showed signs of interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals. So, while the conclusion in the book that we did not come from Neanderthals may not be correct (and still open to debate), the chapters dealing in detail with Neanderthal tools, camp sites, society, art and burial are a must for people interested in the subject...

                        Book Description

This book focuses on four areas of current turbulence research: compressible turbulence, rotating turbulent flows and turbulent flows with significant mean streamline curvature, turbulent boundary layers in unfavorable pressure gradients, and statistically unsteady turbulent flows. Recent progress in the theoretical analysis and modeling of these flows is reviewed, and likely directions for future research on these topics are indicated. This text is unusual in as much as it provides both general commentaries as well as recent specialized developments in the field of turbulence modeling. As such it provides access to both historically validated and accepted results and newer ideas and approaches to the problem of modeling turbulence. Specialized results relevant to the compressible and non-equilibrium nature of turbulence as well as turbulent flows subjected to rotation and mean pressure gradients are also treated. Also of interest, outside the traditional arena of single-point turbulence closures, are articles addressing spectral (two-point) closures, structure function closures, vortex methods and low dimensional models. This book is unique in that it provides a balanced perspective with an emphasis on both rigorous mathematical developments and a focus on engineering problems in a field traditionally dominated by empiricism.

                                Book Description

Porkville, Ohio is a small town with similarities to many communities across America. However, if you are able to put faces with each of these characters, you should seriously consider moving away. The action is centered around two friendly foes; Milton Farnsworth, a retired postal worker, and Earl Swenson, the town dentist. The oasis of conversation is Lou's Bar, and Lou rules his thriving little dive of a business with a firm hand. In other words, if your glass isn't resting on a napkin or coaster, you will regret it. Lou's bouncer, The Weaver, will make sure of that. There's never a dull moment in Porkville from Little Cliff's nonstop lying, to Liddy Loomis' overly observant guarding of her neighborhood; there's always something to keep abreast of. If you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by VerKlempt's Grocery and say "hi" to Marty, the bagger (you can't miss it, it's right next to VerKlempt's Funeral Parlor). Then, head on down to Lou's for a night of fun. If you're lucky, you may even "catch" some live music; Edwin Flambeau and the Smallmouth Bass are due back in town anytime now.
