Book Description
This text aims to provide an in-depth review of recent historical research on the emergence and maturation of institutionalized public accountancy in Scotland from the mid nineteenth century onwards. Not only is this research important for understanding the elitism of the professional project, but it also provides a template from which further studies can be undertaken of public accountancy's origins in other countries. The need for comparative international research of the professional project is assisted by the text's content. Individual contributions cover a range of historical studies including the original foundations and founders, the early competitive struggles with other bodies, the nature of Victorian public practice, individual successes and failures, and the gender issue. Most of the material has a contemporary relevance to accounting policy makers, teachers and students. It should also be of interest to social researchers of professions generally.

Recruiting and retaining the proper employees is an undeniable key to corporate success, and The Headhunter's Edge offers proven advice for those on either side of the process. Want to attract the best skills to your company, or find the best company for your skills? Jeffrey E. Christian, a high-level search consultant for corporations like Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, says we've entered a talent economy in which thinking like an executive recruiter can make the difference whether you're hiring or looking for work. The bulk of the book details suggestions for finding the right people (don't rely too much on academic credentials, do seek résumés displaying upward movement), uncovering the candidates who can sell more than themselves (prepare interviews for specific positions, craft questions that show decision-making and problem-solving aptitude), ensuring that potential employees are who they claim to be (go beyond the references initially supplied, meet personally with critical sources), and retaining those you ultimately select (don't be stingy with compensation, benefits, responsibility, or recognition). Additionally, it shows how to turn this advice around and advance your own career (use well-prepared phone calls to stand out, pay attention to events inside and outside your organization). Packed with loads of such practical and specific tips, this book is recommended for anyone involved on any level in the job market. --Howard Rothman

Essential reading for all managers.......2005-03-10
This book is called "The headhunter's edge" but Christian's mission is to make any hiring manager "Think like a headhunter"
Now Christian is not just ANY headhunter. He's the founder leader of Christian & Timbers, the pioneer in recuitment firms that focussed on IT industry and was the person who showed Carly Fiorina to HP
In the book, Christian looks at what managers need to do, "look for talent" most of the time and shows that what differentiates good organizations is talent. He seeks to define what talent and leadership is, he says it is NOT a good education or experience but mostly "soft" factors that one needs to sense like integrity, humility, intellectual firepower and others.
He also believes that talent is contextual, and that good leaders spend an inordinate amount of time pursuing great talent, or ensuring that great talent does not leave their doors.
So, its not a book just for headhunters, recruitment people or CEOs. Even a manager who has the final decision on who gets on his team will benefit from this book.
I would recommend reading this book with more academic articles on leadership and EQ. Then Christian's examples will put things more into perspective.
What is more interesting is the example of top CEOs who put a great focus on recruitment process for their organizations like Bill Gates, Jack Welch and even VCs like Vinod Khosla.
Do not have to be a CEO to benefit here.......2002-09-29
At first glance, it would seem that this wonderful read was intended solely for those running billion dollar companies (those multi-million concerns can get by without a ferocity for talent). Glance again. Everything Mr. Christian says is just as true for the 150-employee distributor or metal-stamping company as it is for the colossal tech firm. Human beings ARE the corporation. They dictate the momentum a business pushes against or gets swept away by.
In a fell-swoop, Christian validates the entire headhunting industry at its core purpose-to find the MOST appropriate candidate for the position. There is a world of difference between great and irreplaceable. Yes, a small percentage of concerns have the luxury of hiring an "outsider" to find their next star. Yet, this book isn't so much aimed at the IBM and Dell's of the world as it may first appear. Christian implores UNIQUE WIDGETS INC. to do everything in its power to grab, and hold onto, persons who MAKE the company.
Again, this is as much for the corner barbershop as it is for a company bent on cornering the market. No business person can afford to disagree with this man.

Big subject in a small book.......2000-11-27
As the name of this reference implies, it provides a good review from particle physics to astrophysics, and of significance, relates inner space to outer space. Both theoretical and experimental methods are explored. The classical big-bang theory is clearly discussed, as are its difficulties and the solutions provided by inflation theory.
Extremely clear and easy to read, plus beautiful!.......1999-01-24
I have read lots of popular science books about particle physics and this is way out in front of the pack! It clarified many things that other authors just assumed the reader could understand. For example, the section on how to build synchrotrons and accelerators and why the devices are shaped the way they are was so clear. Plus the color photographs and drawings make it a lovely book to just browse through. If you love particle physics, or are even just a little intrigued, this book is a must! I intend to reread it sometime.

Book Description
Quantum behavior encompasses a large fraction of modern science and technology, including the laws of chemistry and the properties of crystals, semiconductors, and superfluids. This graduate-level text presents the basic principles of quantum mechanics using modern mathematical techniques and theoretical concepts, such as hermitian operators, Hilbert space, Dirac notation, and ladder operators. The first two chapters serve as an introduction to quantum theory with a discussion of wave motion and Schrödinger's wave mechanics. Coverage then details the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Throughout, basic theory is clearly illustrated and applied to the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, the variation method, perturbation theory, and nuclear motion. This volume is the ideal textbook for beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical physics, molecular physics and materials science.

Excellent textbook.......2002-08-02
Despite its title, this book contains few applications to chemistry. What distinguishes it from most QM texts is the absence of physics-specific applications like solid state, and the careful, step-by-step process by which the author derives results. I'd recommend it to anyone (chemist, physicist, whatever) who wants to know nonrelativistic quantum theory. It's also a handy reference for a few subjects that have wide use outside QM, like group velocity and spherical harmonics. The style is a bit dry, and I doubt that I'll ever read it cover to cover, but as a textbook it's hard to beat.
Fantastic explanation of theory with math.......2001-10-24
This is exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to put a face to some of the more complex theories and physics that I've been studying on my own about the fundamentals of some string and quantum mechanics theories. He starts from the beginning and goes nice and fast, however its nice small steps he takes, you can read it at any pace but its a LOT packed into it. I'm just glad he was able to finish it without going crazy :) Thanks for taking the time to split up the math and put it all together into one source. This makes it much easier to apply some theory with this kind of background. The math is easily layed out and forshadowed. the formulas and values are explained as they are used and each propogation is shown and explained. It assumes knowledge of physics but explains anyway. I'm not a graduate student, but I can understand it anway, great work.

Behind the triumph of Darwin's theory.......2005-04-11
We tend to think of the monolithic triumph of Darwinism in the wake of the publication of _Origin_, but as Bowler shows the theory of Darwin was under assault by the end of the nineteenth century, before the rise of the neo-Darwinian synthesis. In fact, the acceptance of the fact of evolution--and the rapid conversion of most scientists--was not matched by a similar assent to natural selection. Further, the absence of a genetic argument and the treatment of inheritance in terms of blending was a major problem. By the time of the sixth edition Darwin's claims bordered on incoherence, as a strain of Lamarckianism reentered Darwin's thinking. This was only the beginning, and by the beginning of the twentieth century claims for theistic evolution, orthogenesis, Lamarckianism flourished even as the rediscovery of Mendel produced genetics and the mutation theory. It would be some time before the real triumph of Darwinism occurred, by the middle of the twentieth century, and yet one wonders if a similar cycle must greet the harderning of the paradigm that we now see.
