Accounting and the role of Accountants has permeated the modern societies. For the most part we have accepted the impartiality and objectivity of accounting and not recognized how accounting systems are embedded in a country's economic and legal framework, much of which is in turn shaped by political processes. This web of interactions results in complex economic and political questions which require accounting researchers to focus on several related trends: information economics, regulatory economics, sociology, and political science. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of accounting, many fundamental questions are still subject to debate. Is there one best way to run the modern business corporation? What is the appropriate balance between shareholders, executives, and employees? These questions are being vigorously debated as layoffs, scandals, and restructurings rattle companies around the world. The common assumption is that globalization is merging the varieties of corporate capitalism. Yet, as this book shows, corporations in Japan and the United States are responding differently to the pressures unleashed by globalization. In America, shareholders have emerged as dominant while employment is more transitory and market-oriented. In Japan, shareholders are gaining influence but employees still play a key role in corporate strategy and governance. In The Embedded Corporation, Sanford Jacoby traces this enduring diversity to national differences in economic history and social norms, and, paradoxically, to global competition itself.

The book's vantage point for exploring the varieties of capitalism is the headquarters of large corporations--in particular, their human resources departments, where changes in markets and technology turn into corporate labor policies affecting millions of workers. Jacoby reveals the inner workings of these departments. Despite some cross-fertilization, Japanese and American corporations maintain distinctive approaches to human resource management, with Japanese HR departments occupying a more central position within the corporation. As Jacoby shows, this has important consequences for how firms compete, for corporate governance, and even for the level of inequality in Japan and the United States.

Unlike most of the rah-rah books published in the HR area, this book is based on real research in Japanese and American companies. I don't agree with all of it, but it is interesting, insightful, and original. I would urge all HR professionals, corporate or consultant, to have a look at this book and see what we can (still) learn from the Japanese.

Raphael Cohen-Almagor offers a comprehensive, rich, and critically considered discussion about questions of death and the choice of death in the context of the medical practice.

This book is a remarkable contribution to the debate on death with dignity. It discussed a wide range of topics, including an original outlook on terminology at the end of life (for example, 'post-coma unawareness' is suggested instead of 'permanent vegetative state'); the question of autonomy; the sanctity-of life - quality of life debate; criticism of some extreme quality-of-life position; criticism of Ronald Dworkin's distinction between critical and experiential interests; active and passive euthanasia; the Dutch experience, and the Oregon Death with Dignity Act.

Cohen-Almagor's book is a complete, interdisciplinary discussion of the right to die with dignity. It may be of great interest to people coming from different experiences. Its language and methodology make it accessible to wide range of readers. Its exceptional merit is that it provides a balanced view that never renounces human life and human dignity.

Still able to impart valuable lessons about conservation........2005-01-14

This book was first published in the English language in 1971 as the second in a series of several books - each with it's own specific topic. Some of the photographs may look a little jaded - by today's standards, but because this book would have attracted a 5 star rating in 1971 I believe it should still attract that same rating today.

"Life & Death in a Coral Sea" may be something of an over-dramatic title for some. After all, this is not a book about Sharks or tragedy - but about conservation, pollution and, above all, the protection of our world's underwater environment.

Packed with page after page covering all aspects of the book's main theme, I found the book all the more interesting because of the long passage of time since I read it last. My over-riding conclusion is that the content is as relevant today as it ever was. So much so, I would suggest no scuba diver's bookshelf is complete without a copy - but be quick, they will not remain available forever.

As with all the books in this series, it is also a good read.

Coral reefs have shaped the surface of our planet far more than has any other ecosystem. They are dynamic systems, producing limestone at the rate of 400-2,000 tons per hectare per year, and influencing the chemical balance of the world's oceans. Coral reefs have been around since before the prairies or other ecosystems of flowering plants existed, yet they vanish about a million years before other groups of organisms each time there is a global mass extinction. They return after each catastrophe, however, following a long period of absence. Although coral reefs are the most productive communities in the sea, the fisheries of coral reefs are among the most vulnerable to overexploitation. Despite having the power to create the most massive structures in the world made by living creatures (including man), the thin veneer of living tissue of coral reef is particularly sensitive to natural disturbances and effects of human activities. Coral reefs are the first to go during periods of climate change, but they have always come back. This combination of attributes, creative power and fragility, resilience and sensitivity, makes management of coral-reef systems a challenge to science. Over 70% of the coral reefs in the Caribbean and Asian waters have been degraded, and perhaps a third of the 400 species of corals in Japanese waters are in danger of local extinction unless effective coastal management practices are established. This book presents what is known about factors that shift the balance between accretion and erosion, recruitment and mortality, stony corals and filamentous algae, recovery and degradation--the life and death of coral reefs. Insight into the factors controlling the direction of these processes is essential for appropriate management decisions.

This is a basic and comprehensive book about the processes that affect coral reefs. Exelent edition by Birkeland, includes some of the most restpectable scientists in the field. the book includes plentiful references very useful if you need to start a search in any of the topics included in the book.
