1 out of 5 stars My apologies to the author..........2006-11-05

for writing a negative (yet honest) review. I admire self-published authors trying to get their ideas out there.

But this book is *extremely* thin. It reads like it was written by a middle school student for another middle school student. It's very basic, extremely condescending, & the advice isn't anything you wouldn't pick up by listening to a bit of talk radio.

If you really need a baby steps guide to money & finance, go for Suze Orman's stuff. This will teach a working class/middle class person how to be more comfortable.

If you've already got the basics (the importance of putting money into retirement every year, whether to buy or rent a home, how to pay off your mortgage early, etc), then move on to the Rich Dad stuff.

But for advanced financial advice, read books written by the wealthy for the wealthy. Read tax law books, Charles Givens, & especially pay attention to the tax shelters used by the Perot's, the Bush's, the Rockefellers, etc.

I give this book two thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars Thanx.......2000-04-03

5 out of 5 stars Commending Michalle Mor Barak's Managing Diversity.......2006-06-01

Mor Barak's Managing Diversity is a seminal work because of her contextualizing diveristy in terms of global inclusiveness. Not only does the book provide information and incisive insights, but is comprehensive in covering the topic and citing the very best of the current literature in the field.

This book will appeal to anyone who desires to heighten their awareness of this topic and be completely up to date with the literature (and ahead in some respects). The book will be particularly useful in undergraduate and graduate courses that feature diversity, globalization or understanding the complexity of the work force. In such courses, it could serve as the primary or one of the primary texts. For more general courses on business, management, social services, public administration and non-profit management, the book would fill a vital gap created by the paucity of focus on the topic (one chapter on diversity or multiculturalism in a management text is not enough to prepare students for an increasingly diverse and inclusive environment).

I recommend the interested reader and educator peruse the table of contents and materials presented here. This will surely inform them of the meticulousness of Mor Barak's coverage of the topic and tempt them with the promise of new and insightful knowledge-- a promise she delivers on in a well-written and easy to understand style. I commend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars Assessment by a civil rights Judge.......2006-04-11

I write as a retired federal Administrative Judge who decided hundreds of employment discrimination cases and spoke at scores of conferences and forums on the subject of diversity. Today, I teach social work and law at USC and rely upon this book as a primary text. I strongly recommend Dr. Morbarak's excellent volume as a well written, understandable and thoughtful guide to both employers and employees to understand the values and to avoid or respond to conflicts of the modern workplace. She has provided insights, explanations, and models for dealing with situations in the increasingly globalized world of work.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution to the Management LIterature.......2006-03-27

Employee cohesion and high morale in the workplace are generally accepted, along with quality products and services, as contributing to a company's healthy bottom line. To be successful in today's complex multinational and multicultural as well as domestic work environments, however, businesses must concurrently manage new thresholds of employee, supplier and customer diversity at several levels all at once.

A welcome addition to the emerging dialogue on diversity management is Michàlle Mor Barak's inclusive workplace model. In Managing Diversity: Toward a Globally Inclusive Workplace (Sage Publications, 2005), she encourages work organizations to adopt a new perspective on diversity. Building on its expanding importance to the workplace amid new socio-demographic and legislative trends, Managing Diversity comprehensively addresses the corporate role for inclusiveness as part of workforce management as well as at community, state and federal, and international levels.

In essence, the inclusive workplace is a layered ideal, each level of which complements the others and advances corporate effectiveness. At the workplace level, it honors individual and inter-group differences, while at the community level it also contributes to its surroundings, regardless of whether profits are directly realized. Within the wider environment, it expresses concern for and supports advancement of such disadvantaged or marginalized groups as immigrants, women, and the working poor. And in the instance of multinational companies, it willingly collaborates with individuals, groups and organizations across national and cultural boundaries.

Of note is the practical relevance threaded throughout the book, such as the important distinction that Mor Barak makes between visible (i.e., observable differences) and invisible diversity (such not readily apparent attributes as religion, education, tenure or world view). While discrimination toward either kind is unacceptable, the nature of invisible diversity presents human resource managers the added challenge of a consideration that is difficult to monitor.

A portion of Managing Diversity delves into the complex web of skills, knowledge, and values that combine to shape the inclusive workplace. From an overview of diversity-related employment legislation around the world, to theoretical perspectives on diversity and its meaning in different cultural contexts, to cross-cultural communications, the book is filled with colorful, well-researched examples. The inclusive workplace model itself, however, is applicable to work organizations large and small, transcending specific industries or where they are headquartered in the world.

In this excellent text, Mor Barak, who holds joint appointments at the University of Southern California Schools of Social Work and Business, has made a substantial and unique contribution to the human resources and management literature.

5 out of 5 stars managing Diversity for Competitive Advantage.......2006-03-25

Several distinguishing feature of this very good book on diversity deliver value to the reader. Firstly, the book goes into the causal roots of workplace exclusion practices of employers as also their consequences. The analysis focuses on the groups that are commonly excluded in different parts of the world. Secondly, the book provides latest information on changing workplace realities across countries, including aspects of legislation, demography, and developments in social policy. This has been done through analyses, vignettes and case studies from different parts of the world. Thirdly, the book envisages a comprehensive "inclusive workplace model" which among others includes policies, procedures, and programmes that can help implement development of an inclusive workplace. Fourthly, the book gives cogent explanation for developing globally diverse workforce as a business case. Fifthly, it carries both theoretical content and practical propositions. The book has included some thoughtful illustrations and practical solutions to problems involved in developing a globally inclusive workplace.

While the book has the above-mentioned merits, I must add that the the author's definition of diversity could have been wider so as to include differences related with individual idiosyncrasies, competencies, roles, needs and mindsets as well? She has dealt with group differences such as those associated with race, age, sex, region, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, etc. Of course, that might have made her project heavier.

Overall, the book is a very useful resource for conceptualizing and implementing an inclusive workplace agenda. It reflects a global perspective and will interest readers across countries. The book has demonstrated well that when diversity and inclusion are being practiced as business strategies, they help in providing competitive advantage. It rightly suggests that in order to meaningfully practice DM people must be educated and held accountable for demonstrating new behaviours and competencies envisaging support for a diverse and inclusive workplace.

      2 out of 5 stars Not Great.......2004-04-09

This book is adequate as a textbook, but it's not a great resource for what's really going on out in the world. I felt it was very academic--which can be a good thing, but I think high school students will want something a little more practical. "Street" Law should be something more connected to the streets....I just didn't think this book did the job.

4 out of 5 stars Street Law: A Course In Practical Law.......2000-08-10

This books gives a great overview of law related education. Students are introduced to legal issues in the context of real life. It contains practical information for dealing with various legal problems. Students learn how to write to a member of Congress. This book has a section that allows students to consider and decide the outcome of legal situations. They learn variations in local law and prodedures that focus attention on where the student lives. Over all I would suggest this book as a great training tool for the law related class study.

5 out of 5 stars A coherent guide for the average citizen.......2000-06-07

As a high school student who studied with this textbook, I learned terms and concepts that I could immediately apply to current events. The news on TV and in newspapers about cases were suddenly understandable to me and I felt connected with justice and reason. I recommend "Street Law: A Course in Practical Law" to anyone who wants a detailed and informative, yet comprehensive guide to the law, from torts and criminal law, to business and family law.

Planetary Aeronomy is a modern and concise introduction to the underlying physical and chemical processes that govern the formation and evolution of the upper atmospheres of planets. The general approach employed permits consideration of the growing number of extrasolar planets, the detailed observation of which will become possible over the next decades. The book explains the physics behind many atmospheric processes, which are relevant for the evolution of planetary atmospheres and their water inventories, and also contains useful scaling laws and analytical expressions that can be applied to any planet. Readers thus gain insight into the evolution of terrestrial planets and their long-time habitability, atmospheric stability, etc. This volume can be used both as graduate textbook for students wishing to specialize in the field as well as succinct compendium for researchers in the field.

1 out of 5 stars Error filled text........2003-04-18

I had used an earlier edition of this book in one of my courses years ago and found it to be full of errors. I should have examined this 5th edition more carefully before I chose it as the text for a course this year. I looked at the early chapters, and they seemed to be okay. Since I didn't have many other options at the time and the coverage was at the right level for my undergraduate polymer chemistry course, I went with it. The problem I have found is that the book is full of errors, poorly written, and very poorly edited.

For example, the mechanisms given in section 7.16 would not pass muster in any sophomore organic chemistry course. They omit steps, leave out electron pairs, have arrows pointing in the wrong direction, and show electron pairs moving to atoms that already have a full complement of electrons.

As an example of poor editing in section 7.6, aramids are defined in one paragraph and then defined again in the very next paragraph and then still again a few paragraphs later. It's a though these paragraphs were cut and pasted from someplace, but never read together. Kevlar is also called "Kevlor" in this section.

Some other errors include calling an alkoxide ion a "carbanion", making references to data in a table when the data isn't there, referencing the wrong table in an earlier chapter, and even referencing the wrong early chapter.

I cannot recommend this book for use in a classroom. Students tend to take what is written as the gospel, or they don't have the confidence to question something that looks wrong to them. There are other books that are much better for use in an undergraduate course in polymer chemistry.

2 out of 5 stars Seymour/Carraher's Polymer Chemistry is carelessly written.......2001-12-06

This nominally comprehensive textbook on polymer chemistry is filled with information, but appears to be carelessly edited. Since this is the fifth edition, it may be that material added throughout the editions have been tacked on to existing material without trying to integrate it into the previous material. Many times, the same information is repeated in subsequent paragraphs with different words. I have found many typo, spelling and chemical formula errors in the text.

                        Book Description

Sociologist Jon P. Alston offers a unique and clear analysis of the weaknesses of scientific creationism and intelligent design by identifying what creationists say when they reject evidence for evolution. He also shows how scientific creationists accept non-scientific statements that contradict established scientific knowledge. Acceptance of anti-evolutionary knowledge also demands acceptance of a literal six-day creation and other statements contradicting scientific findings.

Few persons have read so closely the writings of scientific creationists to show how anti-scientific anti-evolutionists become when they criticize the fact of evolution. Creationists are forced to develop “just-so” stories to defend their literal interpretations of Biblical scripture. Alston finds creationists cannot defend their religious beliefs using established scientific methodologies and principles.
