The authors draw from different concepts, approaches, and techniques, as well as their own, which gives a wider view, and wider choices for a mentor or coach. What distinguishes this book, from others on the subject, is that you can apply it right away, knowing exactly what you are doing and why, and knowing that it works.
This is the most balanced and practical book I have read on the subject. I've been an international coach and mentor since 1983. A look at the "Guide to observing....".......2006-03-08
David begins his book in an unsuspecting manner with a quick look back at how comets effected the lives of our ancestors; before the age of telescopes. Briefly, he demonstrates that comets were recognized by not only early scientist, but poets and "fallen princes."
His book is lightly peppered with people, events, and places of historical significance; e.g., that Edmond Halley "dropped out" from Oxford and "headed south that same year to the island of St. Helena, the island that, more than a century later, would serve as Napoleon's home after the battle of Waterloo."
He takes you on a journey through the discovery of comets (in which some cases, comets turn out to be planets - as was in the case of Uranus, Herschel 1781), the recovery of comets, and he discusses the ardent task of mathematically calculating orbits and estimating returns (it was Encke the "mathematician", not Pons "the astronomer", whose name lives on with the 3 1/3 yr. comet - Comet Encke).
He speaks of houses "made of comets." Actually, financed by comets for the honored American astronomer Bernard, who, with 2 months of formal education, paid his bills by discovering comets. You also hear the tales of morale boosting pranks that college fellows play on one another.
He continues on through the pain staking task of searching and searching, for hours on end, until after 917 hours and 28 minutes, spread out over 19 years, he discovered a comet. Correction, he co-discovered a comet. It was discovered simultaneously by another American astronomer. Very interesting to hear him tell the story.
David touches on systematic comet search techniques, tips on film, pros and cons of CCD (digital imaging and why film is better), the problem of staying focused, and how he breaks the sky down into a grid and methodically examines each point of light; twice! (per night...) How else can one detect *ever so slow-motion movement* of a very distant object?
Finally, David chronicles the discovery, predictions, and events leading up to the impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter. Very enjoyable read.
P.S. The book has many pictures scattered throughout and has a nice set of color photos at the books center.
Interesting but not a practical guide for the amateur.......2004-06-16
I bought this book by noted comet discover David Levy hoping that it would serve as a practical guide for amateur astronomers interested in observing and studying comets. Instead, this book is mostly about how Mr. Levy and his dedicated search team discover comets. If you're looking for advice on what type of telescope is best for observing comets (or maybe large binoculars are better?) you won't find it here. While Levy briefly mentions the telescopes he uses, there was no discussion of the equipment options available to the typical amateur astronomer on a budget (wide field refractors and reflectors, binoculars, etc.). The book also lacks advice regarding the weather conditions and locations that are best for observing comets - except to note that at one point Levy and his family moved to Arizona. That's great for them, but what about the rest of us who can't pack up our lives and move to the desert? The book is light on text and heavy on black and white images, many of which are grainy and provide little useful information. One of the more informative sections of the book is the explanation of the arcane new naming system for comets that was developed by the International Astronomical Union in the mid 1990s. There is also a brief discussion of the morphology of comets and the terminology used to describe the various components that can be seen visually. I would have liked this discussion to have been more detailed, perhaps citing various examples based on visual observations using amateur instruments. Levy devotes a large section of the book to his discovery of Comet Shoemaker-Levy, which collided with Jupiter in 1994. Although this is a significant achievement worthy of mention, its important to note that this comet was discovered using a large professional telescope the likes of which most amateurs will never be able to use. Levy also devotes considerable space to describing his experience searching for comets photographically, on old plates, and with CCDs, yet he gives short shrift to visual observation, which is relegated to the back of the book. As Levy correctly notes, the advent of inexpensive CCD cameras and remote telescope operation, combined with wide-field astrograph telescopes, has largely replaced visual sweeping as the main method of comet discovery. However, most readers of this book will probably not be engaged in comet discovery efforts, but will be using their eyes to search for known comets. It is this type of casual visual observer that the book largely lets down. Based on Mr. Levy's reputation as a dedicated and accomplished amateur observer, I was expecting a more comprehensive treatment of the subject that could serve both as a reference and as a practical guide at the eyepiece. Instead, I found this book to be mainly a recap of the notable achievements of the Levies and a few of their colleagues. Interesting, but not exactly a practical guide for the amateur.

I got a 5 on the Chemistry AP last year using this book--it really helped me a lot. I hadn't done any homework for two-thirds of the year, and it really helped me get the practice and knowledge that I needed.

This was a poorly written prep book for chemistry. There are no explanations of how to actually take this exam. The test problems were too easy for the most part, and many of the problems that I got wrong were actually right, the answers in the back were either switched, or the problem was written wrong. The review was ok, but other than that, you should look into another prep book.

Way more helpful than either Princeton or Barron. This book covers every single topic on the Ap Chem test and has some really good practice questions.

In this remarkable book, Plotkin attempts to unify philosophical and evolutionary approaches to the concept of `knowledge'. He examines the various ways one can think about this concept and concludes that there is more to it than only philosophical epistemology. That's why the author tries to study knowledge in a broader perspective. In a well written, erudite manner, he guides the reader through philosophy, psychology and evolutionary biology.
After a short introduction, Plotkin devotes a chapter to sketching the theory of evolution and its natural outcome: adaptation. He continues with the statement that the concepts of evolutionary theory have far broader applicability. They can be used to explain aspects of how our immune system works, the organisation of our brain, or the way science works. Plotkin introduces a model that can be used to study all these different subjects from the same evolutionary point of view. After these chapters we are well prepared to follow Plotkin in the application of his theoretical framework to the origin of knowledge.
The fourth chapter contains the core of Plotkin's argumentation. Here he states that knowledge (also behavioural knowledge) and adaptation are closely related concepts. In fact, he maintains that all adaptations can be viewed as a form of knowledge, and knowledge as an adaptation. With this in mind he examines different kinds of behaviour. He discusses behaviour without thought, also known as instincts. Instincts are adaptations, evolved to cope with predictable changes of the environment. However, when the environment changes in an unpredictable manner, organisms need more than instincts. According to Plotkin, our intelligence is an adaptation which makes it possible to handle such unpredictable changes.
Plotkin believes in the modularity of the mind. This theory states that the brain contains certain modules involved in processing modular-specific information. The most famous example is Chomsky's language module. The knowledge obtained through these modules has epistemic boundaries. Plotkin finds evidence for this point of view when he examines our ability to reason logically, the development of language, emotions and culture. He states that because of these boundaries, our intelligence is also restricted. We cannot learn anything we want. In our struggle to cope with the unpredictable changes in our environment, we are condemned to make failures.
In the last chapter we turn to philosophy. Hume stated that induction can never lead to reliable knowledge. Plotkin agrees and confines that evolutionary epistemology cannot say anything about this reliability problem. Kant maintained that we can only know things in the way they are modulated by the mind, hence we cannot obtain true knowledge. Here Plotkin does not agree. Evolution provides the evidence for the fact that the surviving organisms `got it right' most of the time. So we are capable of generating knowledge that is reliable (enough). In fact we are still getting better, we can even see a glimpse of the future nowadays.
I think this is a great book for everyone interested in the combination evolutionary biology and philosophy. It isn't an easy read, but the author developed some really great ideas, worth the effort. This doesn't say one has to agree with the author on all points. I found it very hard to deal with the adaptation=knowledge idea and his argumentation wasn't always clear to me. I'm also not as modularity minded as Plotkin is and I think he relies heavily on this principle.
In spite of my doubts, I really enjoyed reading this book. For me it was a nice acquaintance with epistemology from a surprising perspective.

Dynamical systems theory is especially well-suited for determining the possible asymptotic states (at both early and late times) of cosmological models, particularly when the governing equations are a finite system of autonomous ordinary differential equations.
In this book we discuss cosmological models as dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on applications in the early Universe. We point out the important role of self-similar models. We review the asymptotic properties of spatially homogeneous perfect fluid models in general relativity. We then discuss results concerning scalar field models with an exponential potential (both with and without barotropic matter). Finally, we discuss the dynamical properties of cosmological models derived from the string effective action.

A major part of the book deals with the spatially homogeneous (Bianchi) models and their isotropic subclass, the Friedmann-Lemaitre models, but certain classes of inhomogeneous models (for example, ‘silent universes’) are also examined. The analysis leads to an understanding of how special (high symmetry) models determine the evolution of more general families of models; and how these families relate to real cosmological observations. Recent advances in our understanding of instabilities in galactic type systems have led to an unravelling of some of the mysteries of what determines the form galaxies take. This book focuses on the mathematical development of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of it, with a strong emphasis on the underlying physical interpretation. This framework is used to discuss the most relevant instabilities which are believed to be closely involved in the way galaxies are formed, in a model independent manner. The relevant observed properties of galaxies that may be used to establish the role of these physical mechanisms are discussed.
The book also includes a chapter discussing numerical simulation techniques, with attention paid to their limitations and to recent advances in this approach. It is demonstrated that recent developments in computer hardware enable a detailed comparison of simulations with analysis. Thus the simulations extend our physical understanding beyond the limitations of the analysis.
The book is intended for use by postgraduate students and researchers in the areas of cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and dynamics.
