From the first quote by Kahlil Gibran in Chapter 1, McDermott and Sexton show us how to immediately give ourselves permission to celebrate the innate skills and talent of those who work for us. Then, they show us how, by delivering concrete models of implementation and the research to back it up. Far from ignoring the societal trends of bullying and conforming particularly espoused by television shows such as Donald Trump's, "The Apprentice," or "The Weakest Link," the authors expose the long term danger of trying to quash the freedom for all of us to create, think, and deliver new and 'innovative' ideas in the workplace. They remind us that an organization is nothing without the people who work there; that its success depends on leaders who can galvanize employees by directing their efforts with strategy that venerates ingenuity and enterprise.

    Book Description

This book considers how the post-Cold War democratic revolution has affected international law. Traditionally, international law said little about the way in which governments were chosen. In the 1990s, however, international law has been deployed to encourage transitions to democracy, and to justify the armed expulsion of military juntas that overthrow elected regimes. In this volume, leading international legal scholars assess this change in international law and ask whether a commitment to democracy is consistent with the structure and rules of the international legal system.

5 out of 5 stars The Implications of International Law Revealed.......2003-02-26

Suppose you were living in a village of thirteen people. You and your neighbors elected one person to be the mayor of your village, and made virtually all public decisions by referendums allowing your mayor to put your decisions into action. You would invariably manage few resources, and exert little power on the communities around you; however, you would have a substantial degree of control in your affairs. Now suppose you moved to a village of approximately 63 billion. You now have a village council, a mayor, a local representative, a governor, a national representative, a president or prime minister, and an international representative. There are thousands of issues decided each day, some of these are legislative issues bound to become laws, some judicial decisions that will have legal bearing - all will effect you and your life. Consequently, the degree of control you can exert over your own affairs has virtually evaporated. What happened to the spread of liberal democracy? This much needed text answers these questions with lucid professionalism and keen insight. In a world where the theory of a "global village" is increasingly and increasingly convincingly being advanced, international law theoretically also becomes increasingly necessary - this global village is interdependent, and thus there must be universality to the laws. Messrs. Fox and Roth provide a practical response to theory with this excellent text, which is divided up into five parts: (1) the normative foundations of a right to political participation; (2) democracy and inter-state relations; (3) democracy and the use of force; (4) democratization and conflicting imperatives; and, (5) critical approaches. There are several chapters within each of these larger parts, each chapter is an essay contributed by a significant legal or international studies scholars. For students of any international interest this text is indispensable to forming cogent arguments and/or proposals.

The discussion about a constitution for the European Union and its rejection by referendum in two of the EU founding member states has once again spurred public and scholarly interest in the democratic quality and potential of the European Union. Debating the Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union brings together distinguished thinkers from law, political science, sociology, and political philosophy to explore the potential for democratically legitimate governance in the European Union. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives and strands from democratic theory, this volume is the best resource for students and readers who are interested in democracy in the European Union.

              Product Description

The European Union s quest for democratic and legitimate governance, together with an appropriately defined collective identity and boundaries did not start with the current enlargement process. The Union s search for its finalité politique and collective identity, however, will be the determinant factor regarding its final decision on Turkey s membership. This study argues that rather than the size and economic, political and social problems of the country, its factual or perceived divergent identity will influence the course of Turkey-EU relations. The impact of enlargement on European democratic governance and collective identity is analyzed, in this regard, with a view to highlight Turkey s special case status and an analysis of Turkey s impact on European governance from a democracy/legitimacy vs. efficiency perspective is undertaken. In that context, various approaches to the conceptions of collective political identity and constitutionalisation in the EU are examined with a special emphasis on constitutional patriotism , constitutional tolerance , and pluralism/particularism in order to determine the consequences of each option for a viable integration between Turkey and Europe.

Much of the book could readily be applied to teaching other topics. The authors discuss how to motivate students that may be coming to your class with no prior knowledge or interest. So active participation is one of the key suggestions. Get them involved! Like having them write several essays. Ideally, this forces them to actually read and understand your lectures.

Assessment is another vital area. With feedback both to you and the students being necessary to measure progress.

The class is meant to be at the university level. For 1st year undergraduates.

                        Book Description

What does it mean to be female? Sarah Blaffer Hrdy--a sociobiologist and a feminist--believes that evolutionary biology can provide some surprising answers. Surprising to those feminists who mistakenly think that biology can only work against women. And surprising to those biologists who incorrectly believe that natural selection operates only on males.

In The Woman That Never Evolved we are introduced to our nearest female relatives competitive, independent, sexually assertive primates who have every bit as much at stake in the evolutionary game as their male counterparts do. These females compete among themselves for rank and resources, but will bond together for mutual defense. They risk their lives to protect their young, yet consort with the very male who murdered their offspring when successful reproduction depends upon it. They tolerate other breeding females if food is plentiful, but chase them away when monogamy is the optimal strategy. When "promiscuity" is an advantage, female primates--like their human cousins--exhibit a sexual appetite that ensures a range of breeding partners. From case after case we are led to the conclusion that the sexually passive, noncompetitive, all-nurturing woman of prevailing myth never could have evolved within the primate order.

Yet males are almost universally dominant over females in primate species, and Homo sapiens is no exception. As we see from this book, women are in some ways the most oppressed of all female primates. Sarah Blaffer Hrdy is convinced that to redress sexual inequality in human societies, we must first understand its evolutionary origins. We cannot travel back in time to meet our own remote ancestors, but we can study those surrogates we have--the other living primates. If women --and not biology--are to control their own destiny, they must understand the past and, as this book shows us, the biological legacy they have inherited.

5 out of 5 stars Insights Into the Evolution of Human Behavior.......2006-12-05

Found this book to be an excellent read. I am a biologist and physical anthropologist by training...with specific interest in human evolution. The links between behavior in our closest primate relatives and ourselves...are very relevant. I found Hrdy's scientific discussion of these issues...appropriate and as insightful as science allows us to be. I would recommend this book and other books by this author...she is a scientist with the background to draw connections AND and excellent science writier. Enjoy.

                        4 out of 5 stars title a tad misleading.......2000-04-27

This book deals mostly with primates. Despite the layperson style title, the book itself is quite scientific and detailed. This can be great for those educated in anthropology and sociobiology as it is very thorough, giving exact names and evolutionary history on the primates discussed, yet can seem a little dry to the layperson, especially if read for long stretches. However, layperson, do not despair. Hrdy will often use humour to lighten or better explain an idea and when she occasionally uses jargon it is usually tongue-in-cheek and always explained. Many of you will be attracted by the feminist-sounding title, but do not be fooled. Only rarely does the author tie in her observations with human behaviour. In fact, any feminism does not appear until the final 2% of the book and seems to simply be angry raving against the oppression of women, and is not linked as well as it could be to the previous 150 or so pages. Generally, however, I enjoyed the book, even though it contained more detail than I, as a layperson, actually needed. To anyone unhappy with the stereotype of the strong male in charge of his passive harem of females or with the aggressive male just using the females as a vessel for his genes, then this can shed new light on the way primates behave and are shaped by their biology. Tying in the information with the woman in the title is left up to the reader.

                          Book Description

This is the first comprehensive treatment of the interactions of atoms and molecules with charged particles, photons and laser fields. Addressing the subject from a unified viewpoint, the volume reflects our present understanding of many-particle dynamics in rearrangement and fragmentation reactions such as electron capture, target and projectile ionisation, photoabsorption and Compton scattering, collisional breakup in Coulomb systems, and dissociative ionisation. The individual chapters, each written by leading experts, give a concise picture of the advanced experimental and theoretical methods. The book also describes experimental methods such as recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy (RIMS), electron microscopy (REMI), and many-particle time-of-flight and imaging techniques. Theoretical approaches treated include the three-body Coulomb problem, R- and S-matrix as well as classical approaches, close-coupling methods, and density-functional theory.

Meg is one of the foulest characters that has ever been written on paper. Meg is green, disgusting, and awful and when she aligns herself with Eann, Ellis and Ott Fitzgibbons, the worst boys in Gonnil, no good can come of it. You will uncover the secret of the Manor at the tip of the hill. An eight hundred year old Manor at the edge of the marsh and boglands. A Manor that Colin moves into when his family inherits it, a Manor with secret’s all it’s own.
