Book Description
The authors analyze the schism between accounting practitioners and academics, providing historical, philosophical, and political perspectives on this division. They support the efforts of the Accounting Education Change Commission in its call for sweeping changes in the scope and quality of accounting education. This schism originated before the turn of the century in the United States over concerns about the best preparation for professional accountants. Since that time, the nature of the schism has broadened considerably. Accounting has largely been taught in a structured framework, far removed from the dynamic and ill-structured situations resulting from environmental changes in which accounting is practiced. This gulf between accounting and practice reflects the schism today, which has become a division between individuals with different philosophical, economic, and political goals and attitudes. Nevertheless, the authors view the schism in a positive light--as a natural reflection of different ideas that lead to beneficial changes. The authors begin with a philosophical perspective on the schism, as a division between opposing ideas, and deal with three areas of the accounting schism: education, practice, and standard-setting. The main focus is on education. The history of the schism is then delineated. Other views of the schism are considered next, including economic, political, and utilitarian. The function of the schism in the world of accounting is examined. Recent changes in the nature and complexity of the environment in which accounting is practiced are presented. This book is suitable for use in accounting theory and policy courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and in accounting education seminars at the graduate level. In addition, the book should be of interest to accounting practitioners.

Excellent Guide!.......2006-06-15
I'm an independent trainer and often look for resources that can keep me on top of my game. I have a library of training books -- some very comprehensive; some with only a few chapters of information that I can use. This book concisely covers mostly everything that I need to know as an experienced trainer. It's also a useful guide for new trainers or those who facilitate learning. Every bit of it was useful. If you need a good book to add to your own reference library, I would highly recommend it.
Not bad for novices.......2002-02-10
A good resource that covers everything from Facilitation to Techniques passing through evaluation and personal development. If you are a beginner or you are asked frequently to help other beginner-level trainers, then you would probably benefit from this book.
The Book is written in an easy and simple style that takes the reader through the different aspects of training logically and smoothly.
Solid, If Dry, Guide for the First Time Trainer.......2000-10-29
This is a reasonable summary of current techniques and strategies for training. The writing is a bit dry, and I got the feeling that this book was oriented towards human resources professionals. There is nothing wrong with that, but my preference is for a less academic style of writing. Still, it's not a bad choice, just not one of my favorites.

Helpful How-To Guide.......2007-03-15
I found this book to be well-written and very well-organized. I plan on using many of the structures and frameworks presented because they make good intuitive sense AND provide trainers with clues on what to look for to ensure trainings are working as planned. The ONLY disappointment with the book is that the lessons/examples/exercises it offers feel very old-school. My supervisors are younger, hipper and more sophisticated than the authors realize. I think their ideas, goals and structures make sense - I think they need to match those strengths with current, fun and relevant activites and lectures.

I have been a trainer of supervisors for 5 years. As part of my training I routinely write or update curriculum. This book has provided a lot of input to my writing and updating as well as given me resources for "off the cuff" modifications that sometimes have to be made during training sessions.

Various approaches have been developed to evaluate the consequences of spatial structure on evolution in subdivided populations. This book is both a review and new synthesis of several of these approaches, based on the theory of spatial genetic structure. François Rousset examines Sewall Wright's methods of analysis based on F-statistics, effective size, and diffusion approximation; coalescent arguments; William Hamilton's inclusive fitness theory; and approaches rooted in game theory and adaptive dynamics. Setting these in a framework that reveals their common features, he demonstrates how efficient tools developed within one approach can be applied to the others.
Rousset not only revisits classical models but also presents new analyses of more recent topics, such as effective size in metapopulations. The book, most of which does not require fluency in advanced mathematics, includes a self-contained exposition of less easily accessible results. It is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in evolutionary ecology and population genetics, and will also interest applied mathematicians working in probability theory as well as statisticians.

Heavy literature.......2007-02-28
I am still working my way through this work, but I can say it is interesting and helped me think about my own genetics project. This is not a beginner's level book. Do not buy, it unless you have a strong foundation in population genetics, mathematics, or population biology. This is a thesis I assume and there are no pictures.

When I first picked up this book at a used bookstore, I thought I would not be able to resist buying it. But my joy quickly turned into dismay as I discovered that the two people who compiled the book did a very unfortunate thing - they left out all the references! None of the many news items reproduced in the book is identified by source and exact date of publication. An incredible misjudgement on the part of the compilers who are both identified in the jacket as librarians! It is also a shame that the book has no index.
