Book Description
Transforming the Bottom Line presents an agenda for organizational transformation achieved by focusing on seven key imperatives: cutting the workload, not the workforce; managing performance by measuring value-adding work; developing a horizontal team-based organization; aligning performance measures with strategy; selling profitable products and services; finding and retaining profitable customers; and implementing a horizontal information system. By distilling the work of such scholars as C.K. Prahalad, Gary Hamel, and Jeffrey Pfeffer, the book provides managers with a useful synthesis of these important and cutting-edge ideas. In addition, the authors contribute a model of a horizontal information system that provides managers with the real numbers. Arguing that better management information, more relevant performance measures, and more thoughtful reward systems can change management behavior, support strategy, and transform the bottom line, the authors pose a hypothetical case in which this new horizontal information system is enacted.

Good background material but not at all actionable.......2003-01-17
I'm familiar with this book as it was an assigned textbook for a graduate level accounting course I taught. Where is succeeds is in pointing out the flaws of traditional accounting as a management tool and traditional cost reduction efforts as a response. Their material on finding and retaining profitable products and finding and retaining profitable customers are especially good. However, there isn't much in here on implementing the ideas and some ideas, especially managing with the real numbers, may be difficult to impossible to implement.
So, what's here is a good to great source of ideas in financial aspects of general management. There's just not much on how to take action on the ideas.
distills to one book many on subject.......1999-10-28
Although the critic that complains of lack of originality is perhaps correct, this book is of great use to the small business owner. Through this book one may convey the writtings of Porter, Kaplan, Drucker, Copeland, Urich and many others to the layman employee that neither has the interest, time, nor perhaps even the capacity to to inculcate the writtings of the aforementioned authors. It delivers the spirit and meaning of value adding/non-value adding activity and its relavance for every business.
Heavy on Cases Light on Content.......1999-03-31
Apply the cost of this book to the purchase of Robert S. Kaplan's "The Balanced Scorecard" and, perhaps, "Cost & Effect." (I'm assuming that almost every reader already has a copy of Michael Hammer's and James Champy's "Reengineering the Corporation.") The author's tend to quote the leading authorities in activity based costing, balanced scorecards, and process reengineering liberally and follow each quote with an endless stream of supporting cases. Outside of these celebrity quotes and the mind-numbing quantity of cases, there is a surprising lack of content -- I'm almost tempted to write the authors to request a refund.
(Believe me, this two-star rating is extremely generous!!!)

Book Description
Almost 30 percent of an organization's total costs are for work that does not benefit the customer. Eliminating this work alone can transform a company's profitability. This challenging and thought-provoking book will show managers how. Transforming the Bottom Line reveals how to measure the real numbers that give a moving-and more accurate-picture of the company's performance. Whereas traditional measurement systems have focused on financial reporting and controlling budgets, the authors' path to transforming the bottom line includes principles such as "cut the work load, not the work force," "develop the team-based organization," and "align performance measures with strategy." Managers who follow these principles can change the behavior of the people in their companies to do work that benefits the customer, supports strategy, and improves profitability.

Book Description
Using short, inspirational phrases that crystallize the concepts of motivation and determination, many coaches-known and unknown, from high school to the pros-have mastered the fine art of summing up a key point in a single sentence or phrase. Sports coaches, perhaps more than any other profession in America, are the best at delivering these short, pithy quotes. The Quotable Coach is the first book to gather more than a thousand of these inspirational wonders. It is filled with words to stoke your competitive fires, touch your heart, raise your level of motivation, or even make you laugh. As a sports columnist for The Washington Times, author, Thom Loverro deals daily with coaches faced with the challenge of trying to move their players to greater glory, or having to explain to a horde of reporters why their team failed to meet expectations.

Get Motivated to Win!.......2004-03-10
This book is filled with really great quotes that will empower you to succeed. There are many quotes from this book that are real classics. Here are two of my favorites:
"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability." --John Wooden
"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." --John Wooden
If you love sports and like to use motivational quotes then this book is for you. Highly recommended.

Old But Still Very Useful..........2000-09-16
Published over 30 years ago in 1964, "IR Theory and Practice of Infrared Spectroscopy" has served students and become one of the classics texts in the subject. Unlike many texts in molecular spectroscopy and physical chemistry, this book meets the need for an introductory text devoted entirely to IR and can be utilized even by those who approach the study with no previous background.
The section on IR theory focuses on explaining the principles that are most frquently encountered in current literature and research. Presentation of theory is clear, succinct, and thorough. It, however, is not a utterly theoretical presentation that will baffle undergraduates and beginners.
You might have to find this item from the library or used bookstore. It is no longer published.

Good source for current information.......2005-12-14
Taking a strictly evolutionary approach to sex differences this book offers a great summary to date (1998) with adequate references to a whole host of research. It takes this information and offers a summary chapter regarding sex differences in modern society that makes great use of the updated information and research to describe basic sex differences in social, cognitive, and interpersonal relationships today. This book is a good source for current information.
Biological determinist. .......2005-10-26
Depending on why you want this book will depend on its usefulness. If your writing an essay to show that men and women are different based on evolutionary approaches then this is your book. It might be worth pointing out I would consider it up there with claims that blacks have a lower I.Q than whites. Most of the studies cited and approaches used have all been questioned scientifically in the past, there is reasonable doubt for me at least that this book contains any truth and merely moulds societies present gender structure views in a way that is hard to disprove, something any first year Psych student will know is true of socio-biology and evolution theories.
I really like it!.......2005-08-10
This is a classic and contemporary book about human behavior in an evolutionary approach. The sex differences is a interesting sobject and this book is a helpful guide to facilitate functional discussion and can be used by students as well. Thanks Geary.
Thorough, concise, convincing.......2002-08-13
This an extremely comprehensive book. With a bibliography bigger than some books, no one can say that Mr. Geary hasn't done his homework. His ability to distill a vast amount of information into a comprehensible, concise and compelling theory of the reasons for gender differences is remarkable. His writing style, although academicly oriented, is very readable. No words are wasted, and no thoughts are half-baked. Agree with him or not, his arguments are well concieved and well documented. A virtual one stop shop for all the documented differences between the sexes. A great book.
A provocative theory of sex differences.......1999-12-23
I wasn't sure at first, but after reading this book I was convinced that human sex differences are related to sexual selection. In all, this was the most interesting and thoughtful book that I have ever read on sex differences.

Book Description
This volume represents a first in its analysis of historical trends in the humor of eight Western countries: Australia, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, the United States, and Yugoslavia. In each country, the authors surveyed and assessed the national humor in a way designed to facilitate comparative study. Each essay details the historical development of national humor with an emphasis on the twentieth century and contemporary trends. The survey includes traditional and popular forms of humor as well as humor in literature, the performing and visual arts, and the mass media. A bibliography suggesting materials for further study completes each chapter. Not only do the contributors present a vivid picture of traditional forms of humor such as carnivals, popular performances, and special festivities, they also examine historical changes in humor. Each author discusses the functions of humor; and as a whole, the contributors demonstrate that sexual, aggressive, social, intellectual, and defensive humor have developed differently and are appreciated differently.
Book Description
In Tuscany, food, family, love, lore, and belonging are all one--and Umberto Menghi imparts this wisdom to those fortunate students who attend his cooking school in Villa Delia, an enchanting Tuscan farmhouse. There they learn the personality of each ingredient, develop a feel for quantities and combinations, and cultivate a new set of instincts to bring back to their own kitchens. If you're not lucky enough to get to Italy and have this top chef teach you firsthand, open these pages for a banquet of over 100 traditional Tuscan dishes he watched his mother and grandmother prepare for years. Commentaries, full of fondness and memory, place the foods in context. Among the mouthwatering sensations, shown in 120 luscious photos: a delicious stuffed zucchini, "my mother's style," with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and several recipes incorporating white beans--a staple in the Tuscan household. Plus: advice on buying and growing your ingredients. Umberto Menghi is a chef, restaurateur, and author of several books on Italian cuisine.
Customer Reviews:
Pure Italian .......2007-07-27
The recipes are very good and easy to follow. The basics in the back of the book are fabulous for making up ahead of time to keep on hand. The Tiramisu recipes is really easy to make and very delicious. The stuffed zucchini are very healthy and taste great, even the kids will these! I highly recommend this cookbook.
Excellent reference for fans of Tuscan cooking.......2006-04-19
If you have been to Toscano and loved the food, then buy this book. Reading this book and looking at the pictures is just like being transported back to Tuscany. If you are looking to expand your collection of authentic Italian cookbooks this book will make an excellent addition to your collection.
The directions are well written and easy to follow. Each of the recipes that I have tried has been fabulous. The Mushroom Carpaccio is a knock out of a recipe. The recipe for Pureed Vegetable Soup with Parmesan Foam is also a winner. If you are fan of potatoes, the Mashed Potatoes baked with eggs and cheese is also fabulous.
There is a recipe in the back of the book for making your own wine vinegar that I am dying to try. Who knew that you could make a mother from broken spaghetti? That recipe has me really intrigued; I just haven't tried it yet.
I love the stories of growing up in Tuscany, and the beautiful pictures of the Tuscan countryside. This book is a winner for anyone that has traveled to Tuscany and fallen in love with the food and the people.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves Tuscany, or wants to.
Recipes come with extensively detailed instructions.......2003-10-19
Written by Umberto Menghi (a professional chef and restaurateur who grew up in Tuscany, Italy), Toscana Mia: The Heart And Soul Of Tuscan Cooking is a splendid cookbook that celebrates Italian (and especially Tuscan) culinary traditions with its savory and taste-tested recipes. Toscana Mia is very highly recommended for any kitchen cook interested in exploring exquisite Tuscan flavors and styles.
