Book Description
New ways of looking, researching and valuing these companies need to be addressed.
Valuation of Internet and Technology Stocks offers practical information to enable institutional investors to value internet.coms and high tech companies more accurately.
The author highlights the deficiencies in existing stock market techniques and shows how they need to be modified or, in most cases, replaced with techniques more suited for the revolution in economies which had taken place since 1991. The economic rules in the financial market place have changed to the extent that strategies successfully applied in the post war era have now been relegated to the deleted items box. 'Valuation on Internet and Technology Stocks' reviews existing stock market techniques highlighting their deficiencies and show how the New Economics necessitates new forms of investment analysis.
* Investigates why there has been a high correlation between high loss companies and a rocketing stock price
* Questions whether there is still a place for discounted cash flows when there is no cash flow to discount
* Considers what new methods are available to value super growth companies and whether these methods are any better than existing techniques

Some (questionable) metrics.......2004-05-10
This book was published in June 2002. The Nasdaq index peaked in March 2000, and that is taken as the high water market of the high technology boom, a grouping which encompasses the dot coms, startup telecoms and the biotechs. So you might read this book as a retrospective on those times. Especially if you had fruitlessly invested some of your own funds in any of those startups.
Kettell's ideas for new metrics by which to evaluate these and future startups are interesting. Though some (many?) might consider these to be discredited by the multiyear slump after March 2000, and the resultant bankruptcies of numerous startups. It was then said that the traditional metrics of performance were still best, and time-tested.

Book Description
This is a wide-ranging book about aspects of the Gothic, from classic texts such as Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights to contemporary fiction by Iain Banks, William Gibson and many others. It approaches the texts through looking at the opposition between the Gothic and the law, suggesting ways in which Gothic at all points produces transgression. It looks at horror fiction by, for example, Stephen King and Robert Bloch, as well as stories from China and Hong Kong, and suggests new ways in which contemporary literary and psychological theory might relate to and address the Gothic.

Book Description
Astronomy, astrophysics and space research have witnessed an explosive development over the last few decades. The new observational potential offered by space stations and the availability of powerful and highly specialized computers have revealed novel aspects of the fascinating realm of galaxies, quasars, stars and planets. The present completely revised 5th edition of
The New Cosmos provides ample evidence of these dramatic developments. In a concise presentation, which assumes only a modest prior knowledge of mathematics and physics, the book gives a coherent introduction to the entire field of astronomy and astrophysics. At the same time it takes into account the art of observation and the fundamental ideas behind their interpretation. Like its predecessors, this edition of
The New Cosmos will provide new insight and enjoyment not only to students and researchers in the fields of astronomy, physics and earth sciences, but also to a wide range of interested amateurs.
Customer Reviews:
applies physics to astronomy.......2006-02-21
As a physics undergrad, an earlier edition of this book was one of our texts in 1982. The latest edition continues the tradition of providing a lucid description of the basic physical principles underlying astronomic phenomena.
Hence, you are shown how the temperature in a star can rise, because as its atoms fall towards each other under mutual gravity, the conservation of energy leads to an increase in kinetic energy and hence temperature. Enough to eventually trigger ignition of nuclear reactions. Well, provided the initial mass is large enough. Otherwise one gets brown dwarfs or gas giants like Jupiter.
Other subjects like spectroscopy are also derived from basic principles. It's nice to see how we can get the surface temperature of a star by looking at its spectrum and seeing which lines exist. And the strength of the magnetic field on its surface by the amount of splitting in certain lines. And even the rate of rotation by the minute Doppler shifts.
The evolution of the elements, from nuclear fusion, is well done. The text refers to the classic papers, including B2FH (Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle). Other key contributors like Chandrasekhar get their fair mention.
A very good introduction to astronomy and astrophysics.......2004-11-21
It's not the flashiest text, I agree. But I think it can be used for a first course on astronomy and astrophysics (for students with some basic calculus and physics).
It covers everything: Celestial mechanics, the Sun and its planetary system, electromagnetic radiation, telescopes and detectors, astrophysics of individual stars, star clusters, interstellar matter, the Milky Way, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, cosmology, and cosmogony. But the style is concise, and there isn't enough space to cover it all in detail. It requires careful reading, and if used for a class, some topics probably need to be skipped or amplified by an instructor.
What would I add to it? Not much. Maybe a little more on planetary dynamics and magnetospheres, since I happen to find them interesting. Perhaps more material on relativity.
Solid astronomical textbook.......2002-12-27
This book may not be the most flashy in illustrations and will require that you actually read whole sections instead of just browsing the highlights in sidebars. But it does contain a lot of solid information going into more detail on several topics than other introductory textbooks. It is targeted rather at the graduating physics student than at an interested lay person.
German Science.......2002-09-07
Being a German-American, I thought this book would get to the rudiments of astrophysics - and it does. Unfortunately, I seem to fall asleep before reading a page or two. The book is full of information ... in TEXT form. The illustrations offered are dry and somewhat difficult to extract information from. The methods of problem solving assume that you have a good handle on the topics discussed already (not for introductory Astrophysicists). If you are in need of a book to give straight to the point explanations, and fundamental equations - you've found it! Try reading at a coffee shop, though - and no decaf!

Book Description
Chromic phenomena, or those produced by materials which exhibit colour in response to a chemical or physical stimulus, have increasingly been at the heart of 'high-tec' developments in a variety of fields in the last decade. Many of the newer technologies, which are at the cutting edge of research, are multi-disciplinary, involving researchers from areas as diverse as physics, biology, materials science and electronic engineering. Chromic Phenomena covers five main areas: - Colour change materials, such as photochromic, thermochromic and electrochromic materials - Materials which absorb and reflect light - the classical dyes and pigments - Luminescent phenomena, including phosphorescence, fluorescence and electroluminescence - Materials which absorb light and transfer energy, eg photosensitisers, infra-red absorbers and laser-addressable compounds - Phenomena involving the manipulation of light by chemicals, such as liquid crystals, lustre pigments, optoelectronics and photonics Providing an entry point both for new researchers and for established ones, this book, with its emphasis on the technological applications of these chromic phenomena, develops and investigates new applications for colour chemistry. It will be of interest to industrialists and professionals in the biological, medicinal, electronics/telecommunications and colorant industries, as well as academics in these fields.
Book Description
Tracing the interpretation of the human-like great apes and ape-like earliest ancestors of present-day humans, this study demonstrates how from the days of Linnaeus to the present, the sacred and taboo-ridden animal-human boundary was constantly tested. The unique dignity of humans, a central value in the West, was, and to some extent still is, on the minds of taxonomists, ethnologists, primatologists, and archaeologists. This book thus offers an anthropological analysis of the burgeoning anthropological disciplines in terms of their own cultural taboos and philosophical preconceptions.
Customer Reviews:
Apologist for Putnam..........2007-02-04
I really enjoyed the overview of work done in the complementary fields of anthropology and primatology. But as the book closes, and as the discussion turns to epistemology, I was disappointed to find Hilary Putnam's stamp on the entire book.
On page 190 (paperback), Corbey quotes Putnam--
" 'Objects' do not exist independendently of concceptual schemes. WE cut up the world into objects when we introduce one or another scheme of descriptions. Since the objects AND the signs are alike internal to the scheme of description, it is possible to say what matches what." (Putnam 1981: 52)
How this is relevant to apes, which appear to be able to survive without benefit of constructivist epistemology, escapes me.
The book may as well have been about philosophers, instead of apes, in terms of its metaphysics.
Still, it is a very good treatment of the wide variety of anthropological and primatological studies that have been accopmplished. And the bibliography is very much worth having availiable for future reference.

Book Description
Understanding dissipative dynamics of open quantum systems remains a challenge in mathematical physics. This problem is relevant in various areas of fundamental and applied physics. From a mathematical point of view, it involves a large body of knowledge. Significant progress in the understanding of such systems has been made during the last decade. These books present in a self-contained way the mathematical theories involved in the modeling of such phenomena. They describe physically relevant models, develop their mathematical analysis and derive their physical implications.
In Volume I the Hamiltonian description of quantum open systems is discussed. This includes an introduction to quantum statistical mechanics and its operator algebraic formulation, modular theory, spectral analysis and their applications to quantum dynamical systems.
Volume II is dedicated to the Markovian formalism of classical and quantum open systems. A complete exposition of noise theory, Markov processes and stochastic differential equations, both in the classical and the quantum context, is provided. These mathematical tools are put into perspective with physical motivations and applications.
Volume III is devoted to recent developments and applications. The topics discussed include the non-equilibrium properties of open quantum systems, the Fermi Golden Rule and weak coupling limit, quantum irreversibility and decoherence, qualitative behaviour of quantum Markov semigroups and continual quantum measurements.

Book Description
This book introduces some basic topics in the spectral theory of dynamical systems, but also includes advanced topics such as a theorem due to H. Helson and W. Parry, and another due to B. Host. Moreover, Ornstein's family of mixing rank one automorphisms is described with construction and proof. Systems of imprimitivity, and their relevance to ergodic theory, are discussed. Baire category theorems of ergodic theory, scattered in the literature, are derived in a unified way. Riesz products are considered, and they are used to describe the spectral types and eigenvalues of rank one automorphisms.
Spectral Theory of Dynamical Systems is the first book devoted exclusively to this subject, moving from introductory material to some topics of current research. The exposition is at a general level and aimed at advanced students and researchers in dynamical systems.

Book Description
Analytic number theory and part of the spectral theory of operators (differential, pseudo-differential, elliptic, etc.) are being merged under amore general analytic theory of regularized products of certain sequences satisfying a few basic axioms. The most basic examples consist of the sequence of natural numbers, the sequence of zeros with positive imaginary part of the Riemann zeta function, and the sequence of eigenvalues, say of a positive Laplacian on a compact or certain cases of non-compact manifolds. The resulting theory is applicable to ergodic theory and dynamical systems; to the zeta and L-functions of number theory or representation theory and modular forms; to Selberg-like zeta functions; andto the theory of regularized determinants familiar in physics and other parts of mathematics. Aside from presenting a systematic account of widely scattered results, the theory also provides new results. One part of the theory deals with complex analytic properties, and another part deals with Fourier analysis. Typical examples are given. This LNM provides basic results which are and will be used in further papers, starting with a general formulation of Cram r's theorem and explicit formulas. The exposition is self-contained (except for far-reaching examples), requiring only standard knowledge of analysis.
