Inspiring.......2004-09-15
This book was so much more than one would think by looking at the cover. It doesn't look like much, but as they say, don't judge a book by it's cover, because this little book is packed with a step by step plan for making improvements in whatever area of life you would like. One couldn't help but make positive change following the guidelines in this book. There is no fluff to wade through. The authors have pulled together information from a multitude of sources and made one concise, straight forward resource. I just finished reading it, and can't wait to start putting it to good use.
Practical, sound, inspiring........2003-04-03
This book is a great read and it does what it says. It helps you to see things in perspective and make real, positive change. The steps are easy to understand and practical but it also seems to be well researched and backed up with sound psychological theory. I would also recommend it to anyone working as a business or life coach as I think it explains the fundamentals very well.

A Liberal I like.......2007-09-01
This volume is a selection of the author's articles, columns and essays from the late 1980s to 1992. Although I often disagree with the liberal opinions of Dershowitz, I find all of his arguments quite though-provoking as he roams across issues like the American justice system, censorship, political correctness, Roe v Wade, the war on drugs and the resurgence of anti-Semitism. Of course some of the issues are dated now, hence the 4 stars.
Part One is about judges, justices, juries and the courts. He argues in favor of the jury system and persuaded me that although flawed (OJ), it is a valuable mechanism to check the power of the courts and establishment structures.
Part Two deals with freedom of expression and the rise of intolerance, Part Three looks at the state, the law and the rights of individuals and Part Four with the law and the politics of sex, life and death.
The last section is the most interesting and deals with issues that have continued to loom larger since then. Titled "Observations Of An American Jew," it discusses trends that are quite disturbing and even more of a concern today. The chapters are:
European Semitism, in which Dershowitz looks at manifestations of the continent's enduring plague during and after the fall of communism. Unfortunately this problem has become worse since he wrote these pieces.
Embattled Israel, in which he points out the impossible standards to which Israel is held by the international community. Human rights abuses in other countries are often ignored whilst Israel is harshly criticized. Here he also discusses the trials of Nazi war criminals, the PLO and the Yasir Arafat.
American Antisemitism and Anti-Zionism From The Right explores the similarities between the mindsets. To his credit, Dershowitz had noticed the ominous parallels long ago. These writings contain plenty of essays on the sinister Patrick Buchanan and the creepy David Duke.
American Antisemitism and Anti-Zionism From The Left investigates the lies and half-truths about Israel in the media. I never realized that it was already so pervasive back then because this problem has since become very grave. Personalities like Louis Farrakhan and Hezbollah shill Noam Chomsky are also covered here.
So this book is still a great read after all these years. The witty and intelligent writing makes up for those parts that have dated since the book was first published.
The Case for Israel
Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism
The Changing Face of Anti-Semitism: From Ancient Times to the Present Day
The New Anti-Semitism: The Current Crisis and What We Must Do About It
Informative and Thoughtful.......2005-12-27
Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz shows a surprising amount of balance and sense in this collection of newspaper columns circa 1988-1992. Dershowitz covers such topics as pornography, rights of the accused, abortion, capital punishment, civil libertarianism, Anti-Semitism, and Political Correctness. Despite the author's liberal reputation, he attacks hypocrisy and intolerance from the left as well as from the right. I didn't always agree with him, but most of his views seem well-reasoned, and I came away with a greater respect for a man that I had previously dismissed as predictable. Students of law, politics, and current events should read this book; there's much food for thought in these provocative columns.

Book Description
Are we alone in the Universe? From the furor over Percival Lowell's claim of canals on Mars at the beginning of the century to the more recent controversial rock from Mars and the sophisticated Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), the prospect of otherworldly life has often titillated and occasionally consumed science and the public. The search for planetary systems, the quest to explain UFOs, and inquiries into the origin of life have fueled an abundance of popular and scientific literature. They have also provided Hollywood with fodder for some of the most popular films of our time, including ET, Aliens, Independence Day, and Contact. Lucid and accessible, Life on Other Worlds chronicles the history of the twentieth-century extraterrestrial debate. Putting the latest findings and heated controversies into a broader historical context, Steven Dick documents how the concept of extraterrestrial intelligence is a world view of its own--a "biophysical cosmology" that seeks confirmation no less than physical views of the Universe. The debate rests at the very limits of science, and attempts at confirmation only illuminate the nature of science itself. Dick shows that appreciating the history of the debate enables a better understanding of the nature of science, and is central to any forward-looking view of religion and philosophy. For anyone interested in a look over the edge of scientific discovery, Life on Other Worlds provides the exciting tale behind the greatest debate in the twentieth century. Dr. Steven J. Dick is an astronomer and historian of science at the U.S. Naval Observatory. He is the author of Plurality of Worlds: The Origins of the Extraterrestrial Life Debate from Democritus to Kant (Cambridge, 1982) and Biological Universe (Cambridge, 1996).
Customer Reviews:
An investigation of what is the most important question.......2001-05-16
Life, what makes it different from other matter and how it began on Earth are the major questions that have faced humans since we evolved the ability to ask questions. Given recent studies that indicate it arose very early on Earth and it is extremely tenacious once it exists, there is nothing to suggest that it would not arise on other planets, if they exist. Astronomers have pushed the envelope and there is now conclusive evidence that there are planets revolving around many other stars. Therefore, current thinking is that there is no evidence contrary to the likelihood of microbial life on many other planets. Of course, while the discovery of microbes on other worlds would be one of the biggest discoveries ever, the real point of interest is the presence of intelligent life. Conclusive evidence, particularly physical contact, would forever change every aspect of how humans approach all facets of religious, ethical and social behavior.
As I read this book and followed the arguments about the likelihood of extraterrestrial life, I was profoundly affected by what I read. To me, the most amazing fact is how quickly life arose on Earth after it cooled to a temperature that would allow it. The oldest known fossils are 3.7 billion years old. Given that this is at most 500 million years after it was possible, this indicates that life may arise quickly. Contrast this with the 3.7 billion years it took for intelligence to evolve and you cannot help but be impressed. Following the stated arguments about the remote probability of life spontaneously developing and you are left with three possibilities: the probabilities are wrong and life arises easily; there was some form of intervention in the creation of life on Earth or the nearly impossible random miracle occurred. Of these possibilities, the third is the least convincing and the first two both strongly indicate the presence of life on other worlds.
However, the topics are not restricted to the scientific study of extraterrestrial life. One chapter is devoted to the presence of extraterrestrials in literature and another to the extraterrestrial explanation for UFOs. The idea of life on other worlds has been around for some time, although religious doctrines made it very dangerous to speak of it until after the power of the Catholic church was weakened. It is interesting to read of many scientists arguing, although indirectly, that life can exist elsewhere. The chapter on UFOs was quite interesting. While the extraterrestrial hypothesis is rightly dismissed out of hand, it is acknowledged that some represent events that science cannot currently explain and for that reason, should be the object of serious study.
There is a major investigation currently under way that unitizes software that anyone can download to their machines. It runs as a screen saver and sifts through captured radio data looking for signals from another civilization. The web site is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu and I am proud to say that my current ranking is in the top ten percent based on the amount of data analyzed. I encourage you to join the effort and hopefully make the consequences of a successful search described in chapters seven and eight a reality.
This is a book that explores some of the deepest questions that humans try to answer. In many ways, answers one way or another would be equivalent to a spiritual awakening.
A fine introduction to the ET debate and its implications.......2001-02-21
Steven Dick have given the general reader a first rate overview of the contemporary debate over extraterrestrial life. The book is an academic contribution, but is accessible to the non-specialist.
He may be at his best in describing what he calls "the biophysical cosmology," which has functioned as a wide-ranging worldview for many of its advocates. The book combines first hand astronomical experience with sophisticated philosophical and sociological reflection.
He describes warring parties in careful, measured prose, and doesn't grind any axes. I especially appreciate his treatment of the theological reflections on and implications of the debate--a discussion often ignored in popular treatments of the debate over extraterrestrial life. I highly recommend this book.
Could use some work.......1999-12-13
Steven Dick covers a lot of interesting material in a variety of fields. However, the author has a tendency to write extensively in the passive voice, making it very slow reading. He also has a tendency to drop lots of names at once. This makes it extremely difficult to follow at times.
Toward a new view of the universe.......1999-11-21
In recent years, scientists have moved toward a new worldview. The universe now seems much friendlier to life than it was in the old cosmology of lifeless rocks and stars. Steven Dick captures this new worldview in LIFE ON OTHER WORLDS. It is breathtaking in its broad sweep of decades of debate and progress, and highly relevant for understanding today's science. This abridgment and update of "The Biological Universe" is even easier to read than the longer version.
Excellent discussion of the current status of Astrobiology.......1999-08-18
This book covers the topic of science and theology and the field of Astrobiology in a comprehensive manner. It is thorough in the discussion of most aspects of the debate on life elsewhere in the Universe. I look forward to future discussions by this writer as the fields of physics, biology, astronomy, and mathematics reveal the complex origins of biological life in the Universe and couple it with the realization the creation is not a singular event. It continues as you read this review.

Book Description
Classic Chemistry Demonstrations is an essential, much-used resource book for all chemistry teachers. It is a collection of chemistry experiments, many well-known others less so, for demonstration in front of a class of students from school to undergraduate age. Chemical demonstrations fulfill a number of important functions in the teaching process where practical class work is not possible. Demonstrations are often spectacular and therefore stimulating and motivating, they allow the students to see an experiment which they otherwise would not be able to share, and they allow the students to see a skilled practitioner at work. Classic Chemistry Demonstrations has been written by a teacher with several years' experience. It includes many well-known experiments, because these will be useful to new chemistry teachers or to scientists from other disciplines who are teaching some chemistry. They have all been trialled in schools and colleges, and the vast majority of the experiments can be carried out at normal room temperature and with easily accessible equipment. The book will prove its worth again and again as a regular source of reference for planning lessons.

Book Description
Theories of human evolution portray ancestral men as active individuals who shaped future generations by testosterone-driven competition, creating a critical gulf between reproductive winners and losers. But what role is left for women within such evolutionary thinking? Their role has been constricted to mere consumers of the fruits of male competition accepting the winning male genes to pass to their children. Allegedly devoid of the need and capacity for competition amongst themselves, women could be neither winners nor losers in the reproductive stakes and so could contribute nothing to the genetic variability that drives selection. Is it any wonder that feminists are dismissive of such evolutionary approaches? That many have sought to ignore the contribution that evolutionary theory can make to our understanding of women? But have women really just been bit part actors in the whole story of evolution? Have they not played their own role in ensuring their reproductive success? In this highly accessible and thought provoking new book, Anne Campbell challenges this passive role of women in evolutionary theory, and redresses the current bias within evolutionary writing. Guiding us through the basics of evolutionary theory, she proposes that women have forged their own strategic way forward, acting through their own forms of competition, rivalry, aggression, and sexuality, to shape their own destiny. Throwing down a challenge to feminist theories, Campbell argues that evolutionary theory can indeed teach us plenty about the development of the female mind - we just need to get it right. This is an important book that will force others to re-evaluate their own assumptions about the evolution of the female mind.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Piece of Work.......2005-11-01
Anne Campbell looks at why females are too easily presumed to be merely passive receivers of winning males' sperm.
Considering the enormous burden of motherhood and a mothers need for resources for both herself and her limited number of potential offspring it should follow that females will compete with each other for resources and there will be differential reproductive success amongst females.
But it is also essential for females to preserve their own health throughout their reproductive lifetime so open, physical aggression is not normally an option. (It is an option for males who can maximise their number of offspring in a brief spell of copulatory access to a number of females.)
So female competition is indirect and low-level harrassment except when the mother needs to show full aggression to directly protect her offspring.
Campbell discusses hormone studies - particularly serotonin and dopamine - suggesting that different levels of these in the sexes provide a braking system on female emotions and impulsive behaviour but less so on males. Hence greater male impulsivity, risk-taking, violence and even suicide. Only the male had the potential for reproductive gains via this weaker braking system.
Campbell also makes many more points about females and males such as the rarity of male parental care in nature and the possible reasons for monogamy eg the female trades sex for the protection of one male against numerous other males who may also be infanticidal. She also discusses female crime and female friendship.
And regarding modern women she points out that there is nothing new about women working except that women have to leave their children to do so.
This is a solid, wide-ranging book providng sound evolutionary reasons for women's psychology and behaviour. She includes the important points about variation within the sexes and the overlap of the sexes. But by considering the reality of how males and females achieved reproductive success in different ways during evolution she explains much about the differences between the sexes today.
Highly recommended.
Very influential book about womens behaviors.......2004-01-17
Quite simply, I am impressed with the value and scope of this manuscript. It is the most influential piece of work written about the mind and behavior of women to appear in history (and yes that is a bold statement, read it you won't be disappointed). I say kudos for taking on a topic of such magnitude, and bringing to light the fact that women too have an evolutionary past. This book is loaded with insight about women's behaviors such as social aggression, friendship, love and marriage. And far from offering simple opinions, the ideas and explanations are backed up by a stagering mound of scientific data. Whether you are an academic or the average Jane, this book is bound to be a classic read for anyone interested in the unique behaviors of women.

Product Description
Volume 11 in the Chronicles of Canada series, this book is essentially a biography of James Wolfe, the great general who led the British to victory at Fortress Louisbourg in Nova Scotia and Quebec, but succumbed to wounds received in the same battle that killed his noted adversary, Montcalm, on the Plains of Abraham. Beginning with Wolfes family history, this work follows the sickly boys growth and development into a dedicated soldier, influenced by his father and other military leaders, and shaped by experience. This work contains famous portraits of Wolfe, Pitt and Amherst, the great British commanders of the French and Indian War. It also features maps of the sieges of Louisbourg and Quebec, a view of Louisbourg in 1758, and an engraving after the famous painting of The Death of Wolfe.
