    Book Description

Pierce and Newstrom's Leaders and the Leadership Process, 3/e is a collection of readings, self-assessments, and applications on leadership intended to give students a feel for the breadth and richness of this study. This experiential paperback book provides students with a sense of the complexity associated with organizational leadership as well as an understanding of the pieces that serve to define leadership. The text encourages students to engage in dialogue and to think critically about the leaders and the leadership process. Self-assessments, which begin most chapters of the book, encourage students to look at their own personal leadership style. A capstone section of Applications, in the form of case studies and experiential exercises, asks students to move beyond theory to the practice of leadership. The authors use this combination of readings, self-assessments, and applications to create a “leadership mosaic” – one that encourages students to examine the concepts, propositions, perspectives, and theories one at a time as it builds towards the students ultimate unique leadership mosaic.

2 out of 5 stars Leadership Theory Is Not Practice.......2003-03-11

I used this book to teach an undergraduate course on leadership. The book was not my choice. The articles and research were edited in such a way that the reader really didn't feel that any of the theories were supported or substantiated by the data.

If it was the authors' intention to leave room for personal reflection and opinion, they succeeded. As for the assessments, the text, including the instructor's manual, provided little direction for interpretation.

I wish Pierce and Newstrom spent more time on and went into greater detail with the chapter introductions.

3 out of 5 stars Tedious, but less than some..........2002-08-02

(2nd ed.) This book is a compendium of 44 articles on leadership, intended for higher education audiences, especially management students in college. The authors also include 19 self-assessment instruments for the reader. The book finishes with 11 case studies and "experiential" exercises (as opposed, I guess, to cognitive exercises?).

The topics are slanted toward social-psychological (roles, gender effects, group dynamics, leader behaviors, cross-cultural contexts, and so forth). As a result, the writings can be tediously "scientific." The book is very well referenced, but, as the authors state, it is not a review of the leadership literature.

The cover drawing is one of five people putting sails on a boat that is not in the water. I presume this is sort of a Magritte comment on leadership. I think it also is a comment on the patchwork tedium of the subject. And after all the sails are on, what does one know about leadership? And, is one a leader?

            Book Description

Design is integral to our everyday lives to the extent that sometimes we are scarcely aware of it. It is manifest in every industrial sector from clothing to furniture, packaging to jewellery, household goods to toys, while at the same time it is intrinsic to the purely aesthetic domain of the visual arts. This book examines the ways in which the creator of such designs may seek to protect their work from exploitation across national boundaries. The work provides a basic introduction to the international legal instruments by which international protection for designs may be secured. It analyses both the Hague Agreement concerning industrial designs, which sets out a procedure for international deposits, and the Berne Convention covering literary and artistic works, which provides wider protection without registration formalities. The analysis includes the principles underpinning these instruments, the scope of protection offered, the conditions and formalities required, and the way in which the instruments interface with national intellectual property legislation. Lists of parties to the instruments and the text of the instruments themselves are included in annex. This book will be of great value to practitioners and researchers working in the field of intellectual property law and those they advise, as well as to designers and manufacturers.

Meteorites, the fragments of space debris that survive their fall to Earth, have much to tell us. They hold the answers to the complexities of star formation and can explain the earliest events in the birth of the solar system. They also may have brought to Earth the water in the oceans, gases of the atmosphere, and other essential ingredients for the evolution of life.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book........2005-09-26

This book covers what I would consider all the major aspects of meteorites, including craters. The section on the chemistry of meteors is augmented by extremely useful color coded charts that visually display what is being discussed. Also the book has a very interesting section on the reason that most meteorite falls occur at 4PM (it is due to the rotation of the earth around the sun).
The format of the book is very esthetic, with glossy pages and excellent graphics.
Anyone interested in meteorites, who is not a planetary geologist, should find this book both fascinating and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Meteorites: A Journey Through Space and Time.......2003-09-19

I once thought that meteorites were hunks of rock from outer space. Not any more! This fascinating book opened a whole new world for me. The easy-to-understand text and accompanying artwork and photographs gave me a new understanding of these messengers from beyond time and space. Who knew they held secrets to the birth of our solar system and to how planets formed? A terrific, well-done book. Meteorites rock!

5 out of 5 stars Meteorites: A Journey Through Space and Time.......2003-02-10

For Middle and High school students this is an excellent and interesting basic source on meteorites. It is not only informative but visually appealing. Visual learners, like many of our regular students and English as a Second Language young adults will discover learning science content to be an easy task with this title.

This easy-to-ready field index will provide any technical person with the information and tools that they need to respond to many types of hazardous materials incidents. This index should be used to avoid potential deleterious incidents by quickly identifying the problems associated with mixing chemical and common substances. The book begins with an introduction, discussion, identification and definition of symbols, applications and examples of how to use the text. The chemicals are listed alphabetically with Reactivity Group Numbers (RGN). These numbers are identified in a table in both rows and columns in a chart. Chemicals, which react the same under a set of conditions, are listed together under the same RGN group of reactants in the back of the text. A list of alternative names for specific chemicals is provided in the index. Each example of chart interpretation is detailed in a step-by-step procedure. The procedure or interpretation of the results of mixing two or more chemicals is found in a quick and easy format.

Champion of modern education, creator of an intellectually dominated profession, T.H. Huxley epitomized the rise of the middle classes as they clawed power from the Anglican elite. Written with enormous zest and passion, Huxley is about the making of our modern Darwinian world.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bio! We Could Sure Use a Huxley Today in USA!.......2005-09-07

What a fine book and bio! The author stated that he is most interested in placing TH Huxley into the context of his times, late 19th Century England, and the world, and he succeeds completely! From THH's humble origins with descriptions of the slums of 1840's London, through the amazing Rattlesnake voyage to Australia and New Guinea, and onward to the world's #1 Iconoclast (Nietzsche came a little later), this book reads like the best novel, with tons of biology, paleontology, history of science, theological debunking, and English history all included. Not to mention the sometimes difficult financial and family life of the founder of the famous 20th century Huxleys. THH was obvious as close to a universal scientific genius and spokeman as we'll ever have! Very strange how his many claims for science in school were accepted in Britain by the 1890's, but are still controversial in 2000's USA!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best science biographies ever.......2005-06-16

I've read Adrian Desmond's Huxley biography several times since its initial publication a decade ago. When I first read it, I thought it was a tour de force; ten years later, it still holds up.

Desmond is a brilliant biographer: his "Darwin" (co-authored with James Moore) and his studies of Robert Owen have been deeply influential among historians of science. The difference between those books and this one, though, is that Desmond obviously likes Huxley: he admires the young Huxley's drive and ambition; his willingness to take risks; his ferocious, furious determination to succeed in despite lack of connections or inheritance (Victorian Britain wasn't so far from Jane Austen when Huxley was striking out on his own); and his incredible success. As much as any single individual, Huxley deserves credit for creating our modern notion of what science can do, and how scientists should be treated-- by the state, by the general public, by universities. It's the bulldog's world; we just live in it.

The hip-hop criticism is astute. The book is actually filled with references to earlier histories of science: nearly every page has a play on the title of some book or article. Insiders will get them; apparently they're noticeable, but distracting, to others.

Still, the book is a model for how to write biography, and probably the best introduction to Victorian science and culture around today.

3 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and exhausting.......2003-09-24

I've never read a book quite like Desmond's. He is an extremely talented writer and is obviously enthusiastic about Huxley, his "X club" cohorts, and Victorian England in general. Some of his prose is worth savoring, in fact. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, his talent and enthusiasm primarily result in a 650 page-long monograph of purple prose. It is difficult to find a single sentence on some pages that doesn't contain a simile (usually of an overwrought nature) or highly charged authorial proclamation. Although this practice certainly makes the writing lively, it also makes it extremely heavy-going and, at times, quite confusing. It is difficult to read more than a few pages at a time.

As for the book's material, it is never less than fascinating. Desmond is a thorough researcher, and he never fails to explore the major events in Huxley's life in proper detail. He is also enormously well-schooled in the world of Victorian science, university politics, and culture. Although he makes even the slightest struggle in Huxley's life seem like a battle for all time, he also succeeds in making "Hal" a truly sympathetic and utterly unparalleled individual. I had no problem with the straight narrative structure as other reviewers seem to have had, but many, many names popped in and out of the story with little information to refresh my memory and this grew tiresome.

In short, I recommend giving this book a shot. You may tolerate or even enjoy Desmond's prose. There is a lot of wonderful information about a wonderful and remarkable man to be imbibed. However, be warned that it will most likely be a murky, if hot and spicy, pool to wade through.

5 out of 5 stars Theory, ideology and paradigm mechanization.......2003-06-11

This is one of the best bios of Huxley ever written (cf. also the more theoretical work of Shellie Lyons) and seems a natural companion to Moore & Desmond's work, Darwin: The Tormented Evolutionist.
The new style of Darwin studies takes the legacy of such as John Greene and others and zeroes in on the social context of the emergence of the theory as ideologically charged.
In Huxley's case one sees the generational change breaking the Anglican monopoly of the Paley-ites, but in the process creating a new establishment in the conservative revolution of Darwin's theory.
What is remarkable is that Darwin's bulldog had an initial clarity that drove him to defend Darwin on evolution, but demur on natural selection. How ironic. Le plus ca change!
It is hard to impossible to take theories of evolution in complete seriousness as pure science when we see the almost outrageous social darwinist cast to the whole operation. Huxley, to his credit, saw things differently toward the end in his final classic Evolution and Ethics. Would that the generations springing from his first great defense of the theory could come to his final regrets. Nice work.

2 out of 5 stars amazing subject completely ruined.......2001-07-06

Thomas Huxley deserves better than this meandering, plodding tome. What should have been a facinating biography is lost in the obtuse style the author uses. On the plus side--there are some very good passages and pockets of wonderful information, and the bibliography is amazingly complete. On the minus side--the shining bits are so deeply hidden in the depths of the authors quagmire style you may need a machete to find them. I also agree with some earlier posts that a thematic approach would be preferrable to a strictly chronological narrative.

                              Book Description

Herbert Bandke is a resident of the Chicago area. He attended Chicago's Lane Tech High School and Chicago Technical College. Herb then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he studied electronics, aeronautics, and flight simulators. His tour included the B58 simulators at Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Indiana and the KC135 flight simulators at Walker Air Force Base in New Mexico. His duties included pilot instruction and teaching electronics. After Herb left the Air Force, he joined IBM as a Field Engineer in IBM's Large Systems Division. His responsibility included insuring the reliability of new products. The products included large mainframe computers, multiprocessors, and all the connected I/O including teleprocessing.

Upon his retirement from IBM, Herb's extensive background in fiber optic and laser technologies enabled him to prove that quantum mechanics is the true core of all physics. The Theory of Everything breaks all shackles that bind physics to light speed and clears the path for higher than light speed quantum technology.

This publication contains the complete theory, the scientific discoveries that verify the theory, and the discoveries and logic that prove other theories false. Also included in The Theory of Everything e-book is "The Theory of Everything Lite," which provides short summaries of the chapters.

                              Book Description

What happens inside our brains when we think about money? Quite a lot, actually, and some of it isn't good for our financial health. In Your Money and Your Brain, Jason Zweig explains why smart people make stupid financial decisions -- and what they can do to avoid these mistakes. Zweig, a veteran financial journalist, draws on the latest research in neuroeconomics, a fascinating new discipline that combines psychology, neuroscience, and economics to better understand financial decision making. He shows why we often misunderstand risk and why we tend to be overconfident about our investment decisions. Your Money and Your Brain offers some radical new insights into investing and shows investors how to take control of the battlefield between reason and emotion.

Your Money and Your Brain is as entertaining as it is enlightening. In the course of his research, Zweig visited leading neuroscience laboratories and subjected himself to numerous experiments. He blends anecdotes from these experiences with stories about investing mistakes, including confessions of stupidity from some highly successful people. Then he draws lessons and offers original practical steps that investors can take to make wiser decisions.

Anyone who has ever looked back on a financial decision and said, "How could I have been so stupid?" will benefit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Look at yourself!.......2007-10-05

This is one of the best books I read in my entire life. Zweig tells you how your brain works. He is pretty straigtforward, well documented and wise. And funny too. You do not need to be an investor to enjoy this book. Zweig focuses on you, yes, on you there, the best investor in the world, aren't you? If you want to take a good look at yourself and see yourself in a somewhat more realistic perspective, Zweig will help you doing just that. This book is an essential read because think about it: who's making all of those brilliant investment decisions in your life? You are? Think again, it's your brain who's doing the driving.
Hey Jason, thanks for holding up such a splendid mirror. I am wiser now, knowing that I don't know half as much as I thought I knew.

In my professional life I advise high net worth individuals on making smart decisions with their money. I've read a number of the behavioral finance books but this one is different. It was fascinating to read how our brains work and it explains a lot of what I've observed in my clients and in myself. I plan to buy several copies as gifts for my clients.

I would have given the book 5 out of 5 except that it seemed like a number of the studies and stories in the book were mentioned more than once or they were just similiar. Either way, some of it got a bit tedious.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Anne M. Beggs.......2007-06-20

I'm confused because I thought I wrote a review years ago. Well, at least I'm not confused about my investments thanx to Ben. Laughing all the way to the bank, yuck, yuck, yuck.

Mr. Schwalb's writing is lol funny. In fact I read sitting on the floor because I'm bent over laughing. Seriously. Bright, witty, entertaining and knowledgable.

Full of good advice and the humor to get us all through the day. Look for his other books. The one on dating is excellent, but I didn't see it listed on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and funny.......2005-04-22

I like the author's straight-forward, no-nonsense style. He doesn't tell you how to get rich, nor does he claim to, but he gives lots of very good information and advice on how to save and invest money, make sound financial decisions and not get ripped off. He pulls no punches and calls liars and crooks exactly what they are. He is the funniest writer I have ever read, with the possible exception of Dave Barry. I think this is his first book - I searched for other books by this author and didn't find any.

5 out of 5 stars An incredibly entertaining and fun to read book on MONEY!.......2005-04-13

If you like money, if you are interested in money this is the book for you. Money Can Make you Rich is truly that, rich in humor and a deep look at some of the funnier experiences of the author in pursuit of Money. His ability to laugh at himself, his mistakes in attempting to make money and at some of our concepts helps to take this light hearted look at a very serious subject. For the author's first published book I think this one is a hit!
