    Book Description

This volume is concerned with the intellectual intersections between the history and sociology of science and the history and sociology of accounting. The various chapters describe a broad shift from concerns for the scientific credentials of accounting to a recognition of the constitutive role that accounting plays for science. They explore the links between the ideals of scientific objectivity and different administrative and political values, look at laboratory practice in social context, and evaluate the emerging interest in the economics of science. The volume as a whole considers the implications of accounting for science, particularly given recent initiatives in the industrialized world to make science more accountable.

5 out of 5 stars attitude is everything!.......2003-07-29

Dealing with a mulitude of personalities, politics and conflicts can be a daunting task on top of just trying to fullfill the requirements of a job. This book breaks down the causes of on-the-job conflict to manageable simplicity by categorizing co-workers and managers into 4 motivational types - the lone ranger, the sharpshooter, the professor and cheerleader; as well as defining their basic approaches to their work. The author then addresses various conflict resolution scenerios in which you may find yourself with these different types of people. I found this to be a very useful book based on a simple premise: Attitude is everything when you want to do any job successfully, whether you are part of a team or a manager. Some scenerios were also applicable to parenting school-aged children and helping them to improve academically. I liked the lean & careful organization of this book - the fundamental message is very straightforward stuff without a lot of fluff! Also recommend Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

3 out of 5 stars Okay! Some Good Tips.......2002-06-09

I think there are few good tips in this book.

    2 out of 5 stars so-so.......2002-01-13

This book is not what I expected--I had expected an approach from a theoretical point of view. Instead, this book offers a lot of "general" techniques/advices that I did not find particularly helpful. Furthermore, this book concentrates on scenarios in a work setting, rather than daily encounters, and perhaps that is also another source of disappointment. I felt a lot of advices are "common sense", but then I have some exposure to this kind of books. I would say if you have no working experience (hence have never confronted situations presented in the book), you may consider this book as a starter. If you are looking for something more, try some other book.

          3 out of 5 stars Not A 3-D Book.......2003-07-12

I had bought this book expecting it to be an astronomy/space 3D book with lots of cool 3D pictures. However a "cool" 3D graphic book was not what I got. This book is a heavy, college level text book. The 3D glasses that come with the book are for a couple of stereoscopic line drawings that are in the book.
Just want to send this warning out to anyone who thinks they may be buying a 3-D book.

This is a text for an introductory astronomy course. One of the main goals is to provide a broad enough and deep enough background in astronomy so the student will be able to follow current developments in astronomy years after they complete the course. This book presumes that most of its readers are not science majors and that they probably have not had a college-level science or mathematics course. The book provides a complete description of current astronomical knowledge, neither at an extreme technical level nor at a level that fails to communicate the quantitative nature of physical science. Finally, the historical development of astronomy is emphasized to show that astronomy, like other sciences, advances through the efforts of many scientists, and to show how present ideas have been developed.

The book was in mint condition. I received it promptly. I am confused though as to the record of it's purchase date. I bought this book in early September and the notification I just received says I purchased it yesterday. Other than that, no complaints.

Its a good read, clear definitions, emphasis on getting sence of things, and simple relationships (say lifetimes scales as inverse of mass squared) but rather poor problems if one intends to use as a textbook... a 100lvl classes only :)

1 out of 5 stars Waste on a Scale of Cosmic Proportions.......2005-08-01

This is quite possibly one of the worst text books I have ever had the displeasure to read. I have no doubt that the author is a person of great intelligence, but his ability to write effectively and provide clear explanations is sorely lacking. The main problem deals with his lack of attention to detail when explaining fundamental concepts.
My main issue comes into play with the problems section of the book, supposedly designed to test one's knowledge/comprehension of the subject covered in that chapter or building on the preceeding chapters. However, this is not the case. The problems will hint to equations that do not exist in the text or asks questions too ambiguous for an accurate understanding. Answers are given in the back of the book, but no work is shown in how to arrive at those conclusions.
Honestly, I'd get more out of my Astronomy class if I had just been turned loose on the internet with a set of problems to solve.
              Don't waste your money.

This was an excellent book and fun to read. I've been a lover of astronomy for 7 years since I was 13 years old! I've read dozens of astronomy books and this one really is a great one. It definitely made my class easier and more enjoyable. The CD-ROM helps too! Nice big book with tons of color pictures, and interesting facts. Not boring at all. It was a good choice for the class.

                            Book Description

This book starts from the premise that patterns of illness and disability in modern human populations have been influenced by the biological and cultural evolution of the human species over the last five million years. Developments as diverse as the transition to an upright posture, the farming of grains, close contact with domestic animals, the use of cooking, and the proliferation of urban settlements, industrial processes and international travel have all had profound effects on human health. The evolution of infectious, genetic and degenerative diseases are viewed through the interaction between human biology and human culture, which helps explain the variation in susceptibility to disease between individuals and populations.

The authors are biologists who have written an introduction to human biology and evolution that is accessible to a general readership, but which aims to teach some fundamental biological principles, including DNA and the nature of genes, the structure and functions of cells, the evolution of infectious agents and the human immune system, and the interaction between human physiology and the physical environment. The potential for new biomedical and genetic technologies to offer partial solutions to a few major health problems is considered, alongside the ethical dilemmas they pose for health services and for individuals in the developed world. The book contains case-studies on genetic screening and gene therapy, lactose intolerance and dioxin pollution, and ends with the suggestion that the pace of cultural change is now seriously challenging human capacity to evolve genetic and social adaptations to maintain and improve health.

                            Book Description

The main topic of the book are the superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets needed in high-energy accelerators and storage rings for protons, antiprotons or heavy ions. The basic principles of low-temperature superconductivity are outlined with special emphasis on the effects which are relevant for accelerator magnets. Properties and fabrication methods of practical superconductors are described. Analytical methods for field calculation and multipole expansion are presented for coils without and with iron yoke. The effect of yoke saturation and geometric distortions on field quality is studied. Persistent magnetization currents in the superconductor and eddy currents the copper part of the cable are analyzed in detail and their influence on field quality and magnet performance is investigated. Superconductor stability, quench origins and propagation and magnet protection are addressed. Some important concepts of accelerator physics are introduced which are needed to appreciate the demanding requirements on field quality in large storage rings. The operational experience with the superconducting HERA collider serves as an illustration. Finally superconducting correction coils and practical construction and fabrication methods of accelerator magnets are discussed. The physical and technical principles described in the book are substantiated with a wealth of experimental data on multipoles, persistent- and eddy-current effects, quench performance and much more.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Superconducting Accelerator Magnets.......2003-02-18

The book is an excellent introduction into the rather special field of superconducting accelerator magnets. All key aspects of NbTi dipole and quadrupole magnets are described by experts with practical experience.

Starting with an introduction into low temperature superconductivity and accelerator physics the book describes NbTi superconductor manufacturing, magnetic field calculations including persistent current effects, cryogenic implications of superconducting magnets, magnet manufacturing and the measuring techniques to verify magnet performance. For the experts the book also contains some useful tables on material properties relevant for the manufacturing and operation of superconducting magnets.

In summary the book presents a lot of useful information in a very concise and easy to understand way. The book is highly recommended.

The stories of vibrant eastern European Jewish communities in the Appalachian coalfields

Coalfield Jews explores the intersection of two simultaneous historic events: central Appalachia’s transformative coal boom (1880s-1920), and the mass migration of eastern European Jews to America. Traveling to southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southwestern Virginia to investigate the coal boom’s opportunities, some Jewish immigrants found success as retailers and established numerous small but flourishing Jewish communities.

Deborah R. Weiner’s Coalfield Jews provides the first extended study of Jews in Appalachia, exploring where they settled, how they made their place within a surprisingly receptive dominant culture, how they competed with coal company stores, interacted with their non-Jewish neighbors, and maintained a strong Jewish identity deep in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. To tell this story, Weiner draws on a wide range of primary sources in social, cultural, religious, labor, economic, and regional history. She also includes moving personal statements, from oral histories as well as archival sources, to create a holistic portrayal of Jewish life that will challenge commonly held views of Appalachia as well as the American Jewish experience.

                                        Book Description

Calvin was in trouble because he'd lied and begins to perspire from his forehead, which was an inherited trait from his mother's side. She pushes him away and utters, `West Virginia Jews must have names?' `Levi, er ah, Levi Klein,' he replies sheepishly. `I wanna be movie star.
                                        --Mike Lilly, West Virginia Jew

And so goes the story of how Calvin Barfield, son of a Cherokee, West Virginia moonshiner, becomes Levi Klein, the next Clint Eastwood in the Mike Lilly's new book West Virginia Jew.

Calvin sets out for the West Coast in his father's van, Maybell, with his dog Partsman as his sidekick. Predictably, Calvin finds the journey to and in California quite different and faster paced than his rural upbringing and manages to get himself in some seriously funny trouble. He gets arrested, sleeps with the deranged daughter of the President of Columbia Pictures, escapes from the jail and falls in with some rather unsavory Los Angeles characters; all within days of arriving in LA. This is merely the beginning of Calvin's quest to become a movie star.

Told from Calvin's cousin Clint's point-of-view and filled with hillbilly humor and backwoods dialogue, West Virginia Jew will entertain and amuse readers over a quick-paced 15 chapters.

                                        Review by Steve Fesenmaier

Charleston native son Michael Lilly has written only the second funny book I have read about West Virginia. Lee Maynard's "Crum" is the first. You know the controversy that surrounds it. Humor can be very dangerous in these parts. This book's title sounds like something that William Pierce out in Pocahontas County may have created to blast his fellow freedom-loving West Virginians - but it is not. You have to know something about Lilly before you can understand the title.

Lilly left his home state after a wild young life, getting to know the most "colorful characters" in Charleston. He told me, " Within months of my departure, three of my good friends had been murdered, one in public. The streets of L.A. were nothing compared to what I grew up with here in Charleston." Lilly became a probation officer in Los Angeles, serving his time for 25 years. As he says, "Ghetto by day, Hollywood by night." During those years he learned a lot about Hollywood, and took a course at Cal Arts on screenwriting. He returned in 1999 to make a film of his screenplay "Tenderloin" which is now a film called "Correct Change." He also wrote the screenplay that was turned into one of the great sports films ever, "Hoosiers," which has won Oscars and is still enjoyed.

This short novel tells the story of a fellow who leaves West Virginia to become the next Clint Eastwood. His name is Calvin Barfield and bares some resemblance to the star of "Correct Change," the actor Russ McCubin.
Lilly uses largely real events to create a Candide-type story of a well-meaning fellow who discovers the joys and hazards of living in Tinseltown.
This book is very unusual because it shows the horrors of modern urban life, NOT the more acceptable horror stories about small town life, as often shown in Stephen King novels and contemporary television.

I had to recall other comic stories like such masterpieces as "Rally Round the Flag, Boys" by Budd Schulberg, creator of the Dobbie Gillis stories. Lilly himself says that the book is largely a cartoon, and has actually worked with a Hollywod animator on creating storyboards for a cartoon based on the book. Calvin is really a character out of the adult animation, "Fritz the Cat," by Ralph Bakshi. ( I wonder why no one has created a cartoon series based on our own Dancin' Outlaw? Making a feature has been in the works for a long time, but a creative WV artist may be able to create fascinating stories and images using a pen and paper - much cheaper, and it wouldn't require any payments to Jesco himself.)

I also had to think of Jethro from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and Lil Abner. Both are the grandfathers of this updated, adult version of the goodhearted hillbilly - in this case, one who loves sex and drugs and knows how to have a good time. I love his dog Partsman who is truly extraordinary, but given all the talking dogs and cats in films these days, not that unusual. I really liked his anti-hero "Kamikaze Don Dudley" - a real person Lilly knew in his wild and crazy personal life.

If you liked "Crum," read this book. And check out the audiotape read by the author himself. He does a fine job conveying the WV and Hollywood accents, and uses his well-developed sense of humor and irony to carry the tale. And it does have a "powerful anti-drug message," showing that there are worst evils in LA than even the hollows of West Virginia.
