2 out of 5 stars This Book Does Not Scratch the Surface of Real Credit Enhancement Methods........2005-12-03

The information in this book is the same recycled misinformation that the general mainstream public believes about credit. Paying old debts does not help your credit score much at all. A paid charge off is just as poor as the charge off in the first place. If you have severely poor credit, nothing in this book is going to help make it better unless you are cool with waiting 10 years to rent a car, book a hotel room or be able to start a bar tab at half decent restaurant without being treated like a leper. You need to start a new credit file which is 100% legal and works very well. Then you need to have seasoned aged credit added to your file which will dramatically boost your score and allow you to get on with your life. All the money management skills in the world won't help you if your credit has already been damaged severely. That time has passed. The author's view that a new credit file is illegal is totally false. My attorney charged me $3000 to create a Credit Privacy Number for me and it is totally 100% legal and was worth it even if I had to pay her $10,000 because it is perfect and prestine. Then my aunt added me to her 10 year old Amex account as an "authorized user" and 60 days later, I had a credit score of 790. The only thing illegal about credit is when you borrow money with the intent of never paying it back. Period. You don't have to give your Social Security Number to ANYONE but the IRS, your employer and the SSA. That is not my opinion, that is FEDERAL LAW. If you think this book contains your only credit options, good luck staying poor.......:) The title of this book should be "What Average Consumers THINK About Credit"

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Starting Resource.......2001-03-17

This book I got from the library and started reading. It is a good resource with basic information such as where to contact the three credit burueaus, how to organize your debt, etc. It provides good details and I recommend it to any one. By the way, if you are thinking of buying it with using a credit card, you may be missing the point. Use debit card or check instead [yeah, you with the Viss right in front of you! I'm talking to you! ;) :) ] of credit card.

From the supplier: Vast numbers of people do not use their computers to their full technological potential because of many fears including computer viruses that can infect their computers and online privacy. Privacy concerns are one of the biggest reasons why people are wary about shopping or banking online. The banking industry needs to address this issue quickly and effectively to successfully sell its online services. They may be able to do so through the Council of Better Business Bureaus, which has developed a program to specifically to address this problem.

                      Book Description

The glowing cloud in Orion's sword, the Orion Nebula is a thing of beauty in the night sky; it is also the closest center of massive star formation--a stellar nursery that reproduces the conditions in which our own Sun formed some 4.5 billion years ago. The study of the Orion Nebula, focused upon by ever more powerful telescopes from Galileo's time to our own, clarifies how stars are formed, and how we have come to understand the process. C. Robert O'Dell has spent a lifetime studying Orion, and in this book he explains what the Nebula is, how it shines, its role in giving birth to stars, and the insights it affords into how common (or rare) planet formation might be.

An account of astronomy's extended engagement with one remarkable celestial object, this book also tells the story of astronomy over the last four centuries. To help readers appreciate the Nebula and its secrets, O'Dell unfolds his tale chronologically, as astrophysical knowledge developed, and our knowledge of the Nebula and the night sky improved.

Because he served as chief scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope, O'Dell conveys a sense of continuity with his professional ancestors as he describes the construction of the world's most powerful observatory. The result is a rare insider's view of this observatory--and, from that unique perspective, an intimate observer's understanding of one of the sky's most instructive and magnificent objects.

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of Star birth.......2007-02-18

This relatively short book covers a lot of material on astronomy and in a very understandable and thoroughly entertaining way. Mr. O'Dell, a noted scientist who played a big role in the development of the Hubble space telescope, does a beautiful job of blending the facts and history of astronomy into this fascinating tale of the Orion Nebula.

He covers some interesting history of astronomical observations and of the telescope, astrophotography and other detectors. He then goes into many details of the birth and evolution of stars from their initial gravitational collapse inside a molecular cloud to their achieving the nuclear fusion state and reaching hydrostatic equilibrium and then their long life on the main sequence. He also discuses some interesting objects such as brown dwarfs and rouge planets (star wantabes that didn't have the initial mass to ignite fusion). He has a very interesting coverage of the Hubble space telescope's history including the details of the infamous mirror problem and how it happened.

As he gets into the description of the Orion Nebula itself, he covers (and documents with beautiful pictures) many of the amazing features of this relatively nearby young stellar nursery. He discusses the dominant stars such as Theta1C, the numerous proplyds, the visible shock waves and the high speed particle jets emanating from the circumstellar disks.

A particularly thought provoking passage in this book was when Mr. O'Dell described what it would look like to an observer who was within the Orion Nebula Cluster - he painted a spectacular picture inside my mind!

In the latter chapters, he covers topics like planet formation, the possibility of life in the universe, and how scientist are more accurately refining some of the terms of famous Drake equation.

He concludes with a short description of the scientific process and how we have gained more and more understanding of our universe from the works of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, and Einstein. As each added to our knowledge, sometimes we had to let go of older ideas. As Spencer Tracy said in the movie, Inherit the Wind, "Progress has never been a bargain. You have to pay for it. You can have a telephone, but you lose privacy and the charm of distance. You may conquer the air, but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline." As science reveals more answers to the origin of the universe, we sometimes have to abandon the simpler (and perhaps more confronting) explanations.

This is a book that will make you think, open your mind to the beauty of the cosmos, and appreciate the work of those giants on whose shoulders we stand as we gaze to the future and unravel the past of this amazing universe we inhabit.

3 out of 5 stars Only 2 chapters devoted at THE NEBULA !.......2005-08-16

I feel a bit disappointed because i was expecting a book devoted (and specialised) at the famous ORION NEBULA and instead of that i've read a book covering general astronomy knowledge. The final taste that this book left me is that of a fair, easy-to-read book, but away from the main subject.

                              Book Description

Can the insights of science provide a proper understanding of human culture, or must we leave the analysis of culture to the so-called humanities? The ability to share knowledge and beliefs is the preeminent characteristic of our species. Science itself is a product of culture and the natural sciences are the most powerful forms of knowledge we have. From explanations of the origins of the universe to descriptions of the molecular structure of life, science has a spectacular record of achievement. Yet it has mostly failed to provide an understanding of human culture.

The Imagined World Made Real changes this by showing how a grasp of human evolution extends the reach of science. Henry Plotkin recognizes that at the heart of human culture are social constructs, such as justice and money, and that collective beliefs, values, and actions are essential to their formation and maintenance. Only when these constructs are integrated into an accepted biological framework will there be a true synthesis between the social and natural sciences.

This book describes the beginnings of a comprehensive natural science of culture, and with it, an understanding of why people do what they do. Culture can now be thought of as a natural process that is actually billions of years old.

                                      Book Description

Buffalo Winged is women's fiction served medium hot and extra crispy. But there's something for guys too: There's football! There's violence! There's crazy weather!

Will love triumph over a nasty wind chill factor?

After a nightmare wedding reception and a honeymoon trip with friends instead of a husband, Nikki Holloway would rather have a root canal than a date. Jack Buchanan's bold attempts to win her over are hampered by a secret that could destroy his hope for a relationship. Is it too late for him to earn her trust?

Buffalo Winged is a multi-generational story set in Buffalo, New York, a quirky city known for the pluckiness of its residents, the character of its neighborhoods and the idiosyncrasies of its weather. Whether cheering the Sabres, battling a blizzard or stuck in traffic near the big blue water tower, Nikki Holloway and her friends reflect the down-to-earth qualities Buffalo's natives take for granted.

The themes of love and loss, betrayal and forgiveness are echoed in their parents' generation as former friends wonder if some fences are better left un-mended. Whether standing up to a co-worker while wielding office supplies as a weapon, or fending off the attentions of an unwanted suitor using only her wits, Nikki tries to piece her life together while regaining her emotional balance. Only time will tell if Jack can melt her frozen heart.

The story opens on one of the hottest days of the summer, and ends on one of winter's coldest. The reader can enjoy a story set legitimately in Western New York (unlike faux TV shows in which everyone has the wrong accent and no one even owns an ice scraper.) The Bills matter, the Sabres matter, who has the best chicken wings matters, what your family thinks matters, and, (unless you're a glutton for frostbite), the weather matters.

It's a story about friendships that last, families that care, and loves that are lost, found and rekindled. By the end if you aren't from Western New York, you'll wish you were. And if you are from Western New York, you'll understand.

This isn't a bad book, and hey - it's set in my town! The only comment I will make is that, because the author overly saturates the novel with Buffalonian mentions, I think a reader who has never been to and knows nothing of Buffalo would get a little bored with all the restaurant/street/building references. I mean, I live here and even I thought there was a bit of overkill on that end of things. A book set in Chicago usually isn't overly indulgent on the landmark references, and I see no reason why a novel set in Buffalo should be any different. While I doff my cap to the author's obvious fondness for this city, I really think she overdid it.

I picked up Buffalo Winged simply because of the title, not expecting it to entertain me the way it did. Although admittedly I was reluctant to read a romantic-type of story, the expert characterization was the strength of the book. Not only is Nikki, the protagonist, a real and likable character, I particularly enjoyed the way the more mature characters dealt with real life issues of love, loss and despair. These emotions were conveyed in a very real way with real life characters that anyone would be able to say they knew (or hoped to) in their lives. These compelling characters along with the humor and authentic Buffalo flavoring made this ex-Buffalonian and confirmed mystery reader reconsider his thoughts for his next pleasure read.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Buffalo Winged.......2004-01-28

I found "Buffalo Winged" to be a delightful, well-written novel that follows two generations of Buffalonians as they confront real-life problems.
I was captivated by the cast of characters as they interacted with each other. The situations they faced are down-to-earth and all of us can close our eyes and remember such times in our lives. The relationships of family and friends are a major part of the book and everyone will find a "kindred spirit" within the pages of "Buffalo Winged".
Hope there is another novel in the works to update us on Nikki, Mush and Kendra.
