Book Description
When first published over 30 years ago, The Evaluation Interview gained immediate recognition as one of the best books on the subject of interviewing. Since then it has become widely acknowledged as the essential reference for organizations and personnel interviewers. The American Society for Personnel Administration even named the second edition the ``outstanding human resource management book'' of 1978. Now updated and revised, The Evaluation Interview is more useful than ever. With the increasing globalization of business, cut-throat competitiveness, and corporate downsizing, it is imperative that organizations hire more versatile people and retrain and develop employees already on board. This indispensable guide shows companies how to do just that, focusing on the many applications of Richard Fear's proven step-by-step method for assessing an applicant's work history, education, social adjustment, and motivation. New to the fourth edition are sections applying interview techniques for team-building, for strategic visioning, and for appraisal information feedback--a powerful tool for improving motivation and employer relations. What's more, it includes a new interview guide for college recruiters and forms and guidelines for recording and evaluating the results. Review of The Evaluation Interview.......2007-03-21
Quaint, but well worth reading.......2003-05-17
The heart of the book is a detailed explanation of a methodology for conducting structured hiring interviews. It also covers yearly perfomance reviews and related topics. The authors frankly describe how to create an illusory rapport with the interviewee while homing in on the character flaws which might make him or her unfit to hold the job he or she is interviewing for. The flaws the authors think you should be particularly worried about are laziness and stupidity.
It is a useful book for anyone who has to do hiring interviews, even when the company is trying to cut corners in the hiring process. It is even more useful for the interviewee, because after the reading the book, you have a better idea what the person on the other side of the desk is looking for. (By the way, the authors tell interviewers to AVOID sitting on the far side of a desk.)
It is worth buying the book just for the discussion of the dreaded "strengths and weaknesses" question. You should admit to a weakness while proving you don't really have that weakness. A good weakness to admit to seems to be "I don't work hard enough"--- assuming you can convince the interviewer that you are in fact a workaholic.
I have taken a sarcastic view of this book's content, but it is well worth reading and contains many excellent suggestions. Although I personally don't agree with many aspects of Chiron and Fears' methodology, I do think the business world would be a more humane place if more companies used a similar methodology (or just about ANY methodology) to evaluate job applicants.
I gave the book a 5th star for actually being readable and entertaining (unlike most management books.)
a perfect evaluation of an applicant can be quite tricky..........2001-02-24
It doesn't provide you with worksheet-like lists where you can make crosses to evaluate the candidate.

Not a grad-level text, which is perfect.......1999-09-10
Even those that do have formal training, however, could benefit from reading the eponymous essay which offers a great rebuttal to those who think that scientific theories are just current guesses that can be radically overthrown at any given moment.
An ok book if you don't know basic chemistry & astronomy.......1999-07-23

Einstein's Relativity Theory: Correct, Paradoxical & Wrong
Lyubomir T. Gruyitch Manufacturer: Trafford Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1425104819 |
Book Description
Einstein's relativity theory ignores the well known facts about the quantities and units, which are presented in a general form in the book. It uses the values of speeds inconsistently relative to units, which is shown in the book. It accepts severely restrictive, physically unacceptable in general, assumptions that Einstein lifted up to the untouchable postulates. Consequently, his relativity theory and its developments represent a singular case valid only when the assumptions hold, rather than a general relativity theory. They are physically valid only if the Lorentz transformations are physically applicable, which does not happen even for simple systems used in Einstein's relativity theory as illustrative ones. Other cases of the physical invalidity of the Lorentz transformations, consequently of Einstein's relativity theory and of its developments, are shown. Another consequences are various paradoxes and errors explained and proved in the book.

Was Einstein Wrong?
Enrique Morales-Riveira Manufacturer: Trafford Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1412022436 Release Date: 2006-07-06 |
Book Description
The author explains for us, in this exhilarating, epistemological discourse, how the theory of relativity and the standard model for the physics of subatomic particles is leading modern physics down an ominous dead-end street where irrationality and the inadequate, indiscriminate use of mathematics and of field experimentation, without the support of substantial theoretical bases, is creating a new physics where common sense and reality seem to have no place whatsoever and where everything, absolutely everything, has an explanation, no matter how absurd it may appear, if one may develop mathematical models ad hoc which, with time, take on the connotation of irremovable axioms.

The Behavioural Ecology of Parasites
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851996159 |
Book Description
Parasites have evolved numerous complex and fascinating ways of interacting with their hosts. The subject attracts the interest of numerous biologists from the perspective of ecology and behavioral biology, as well as from those concerned with more applied aspects of parasitology. However, there has been no recent book to synthesize this field. This book fills this gap in the literature and has been written by leading authorities from the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Main topics covered include: Foraging for hosts; host acceptance and infection; interactions among parasites with the host; parasite-host interactions.

Parasites and the Behavior of Animals (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution)
Janice Moore Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0195146530 |
Book Description
When a parasite invades an ant, does the ant behave like other ants? Maybe not-and if it doesn't, who, if anyone, benefits from the altered behaviors? The parasite? The ant? Parasites and the Behavior of Animals shows that parasite-induced behavioral alterations are more common than we might realize, and it places these alterations in an evolutionary and ecological context. Emphasizing eukaryotic parasites, the book examines the adaptive nature of behavioral changes associated with parasitism, exploring the effects of these changes on parasite transmission, parasite avoidance, and the fitness of both host and parasite. The behavioral changes and their effects are not always straightforward. To the extent that virulence, for instance, is linked to parasite transmission, the evolutionary interests of parasite and host will diverge, and the current winner of the contest to maximize reproductive rates may not be clear, or, for that matter, inevitable. Nonetheless, by affecting susceptibility, host/parasite lifespan and fecundity, and transmission itself, host behavior influences parameters that are basic to our comprehension of how parasites invade host populations, and fundamentally, how parasites evolve. Such an understanding is important for a wide range of scientists, from ecologists and parasitologists to evolutionary, conservation and behavioral biologists: The behavioral alterations that parasites induce can subtly and profoundly affect the distribution and abundance of animals.

The Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Host-Parasitoid Interactions (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution)
Michael P. Hassell Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198540892 |
Book Description
This book examines our current understanding of the population dynamics of one kind of interaction - that between insect parasitoids and their hosts. Parasitoids are amongst the most abundant of all animals, and make up about 10% or more of metazoan species. Almost no insect species escape their attack. Host-parasitoid interactions were first modelled over fifty years ago, but for many years there was little good empirical information on the important factors that affect host and parasitoid populations. The models were very simple, and their predictions rather divorced from the complexity of what was visible in the field. Now, better data is available on many components of host-parasitoid systems, from field observations and laboratory and field experiments, and this allows a much closer correspondence between models and data. In particular, the past twenty years have seen major advances in our understanding of how host-parasitoid interactions are influenced by spatial processes, by age-structure effects, and by competition from additional host and parasitoid species. The result is a body of theory that makes direct contact with real systems in the field, and provides us with a detailed understanding of what underpins a whole area of population dynamics. In this book, Michael P Hassell pulls the theory and field data together to present an elegant illustration of the way in which ecological studies advance.
