This book not only provided expert subject matter, it also provided a lot of good templates/resources to take advantage of. Whether you are seasoned interviewed/recruiter or just starting in the process, this book will put in the right direction of the true interview.

Quaint, but well worth reading.......2003-05-17

This is an updated version of an old book about interviewing techniques. It is reasonably up-to-date, but it takes a rather quaint view of the hiring process. It assumes that a typical company has a large and politically powerful human-resources department which has been given vast amounts of time, staff, and resources to engage in a fastidiously objective hiring process. It also assumes that a company's management actually knows what the firm's future personnel needs are. Most unrealistically of all, it assumes that HR and line managers actually communicate with one another. Even in 1968 when Chiron & Fears wrote the first edition of this book, this was a pollyannaish viewpoint. In 2003, their assumptions add up to a ludicrous fantasy.

The heart of the book is a detailed explanation of a methodology for conducting structured hiring interviews. It also covers yearly perfomance reviews and related topics. The authors frankly describe how to create an illusory rapport with the interviewee while homing in on the character flaws which might make him or her unfit to hold the job he or she is interviewing for. The flaws the authors think you should be particularly worried about are laziness and stupidity.

It is a useful book for anyone who has to do hiring interviews, even when the company is trying to cut corners in the hiring process. It is even more useful for the interviewee, because after the reading the book, you have a better idea what the person on the other side of the desk is looking for. (By the way, the authors tell interviewers to AVOID sitting on the far side of a desk.)

It is worth buying the book just for the discussion of the dreaded "strengths and weaknesses" question. You should admit to a weakness while proving you don't really have that weakness. A good weakness to admit to seems to be "I don't work hard enough"--- assuming you can convince the interviewer that you are in fact a workaholic.

I have taken a sarcastic view of this book's content, but it is well worth reading and contains many excellent suggestions. Although I personally don't agree with many aspects of Chiron and Fears' methodology, I do think the business world would be a more humane place if more companies used a similar methodology (or just about ANY methodology) to evaluate job applicants.

I gave the book a 5th star for actually being readable and entertaining (unlike most management books.)

This books leads you through the application process from the employer viewpoint. It shows you where to, what to consider and how to circumvent traps.

It doesn't provide you with worksheet-like lists where you can make crosses to evaluate the candidate.

Those who are expecting an advanced text of physics, chemisty, or astronomy are going to be disappointed. This is a popularization. It's aimed at people who want to understand the basics of science but who don't have formal training. On that level, it suceeds brilliantly.

Even those that do have formal training, however, could benefit from reading the eponymous essay which offers a great rebuttal to those who think that scientific theories are just current guesses that can be radically overthrown at any given moment.

An ok book if you don't know basic chemistry & astronomy.......1999-07-23

This is the first book I ever pick up by Isaac Asimov & I hope his other books are better. I have to admit he is a good writer, but the book only goes over the basic of basics in chemistry & astronony (Not to say I have given up on him, but I guess I was expecting alittle bit more from a person who got his PHD at the age of 25). If you are just starting one of these subjects it is an easily understandable book.

Einstein's relativity theory ignores the well known facts about the quantities and units, which are presented in a general form in the book. It uses the values of speeds inconsistently relative to units, which is shown in the book. It accepts severely restrictive, physically unacceptable in general, assumptions that Einstein lifted up to the untouchable postulates. Consequently, his relativity theory and its developments represent a singular case valid only when the assumptions hold, rather than a general relativity theory. They are physically valid only if the Lorentz transformations are physically applicable, which does not happen even for simple systems used in Einstein's relativity theory as illustrative ones. Other cases of the physical invalidity of the Lorentz transformations, consequently of Einstein's relativity theory and of its developments, are shown. Another consequences are various paradoxes and errors explained and proved in the book.

The book serves as a guide how to overcome all the drawbacks of Einstein's relativity theory. It is a basis for rejecting the misleading interpretation of time and of its relativity. It opens the possibility for the clarification of the physical sense of time relativity, as well as for novel mathematical relativity theories that create new directions in physics. These achievements are in the accompanying book Time & Time Fields: Modeling, Relativity, and Systems Control. These two books were originally written as one entity. The book size limit forced their formal separation in two books, but they still form essentially an entity.

To the extent that virulence, for instance, is linked to parasite transmission, the evolutionary interests of parasite and host will diverge, and the current winner of the contest to maximize reproductive rates may not be clear, or, for that matter, inevitable. Nonetheless, by affecting susceptibility, host/parasite lifespan and fecundity, and transmission itself, host behavior influences parameters that are basic to our comprehension of how parasites invade host populations, and fundamentally, how parasites evolve. Such an understanding is important for a wide range of scientists, from ecologists and parasitologists to evolutionary, conservation and behavioral biologists: The behavioral alterations that parasites induce can subtly and profoundly affect the distribution and abundance of animals.

Parasitoids are amongst the most abundant of all animals, and make up about 10% or more of metazoan species. Almost no insect species escape their attack. The models were very simple, and their predictions rather divorced from the complexity of what was visible in the field. In particular, the past twenty years have seen major advances in our understanding of how host-parasitoid interactions are influenced by spatial processes, by age-structure effects, and by competition from additional host and parasitoid species. The result is a body of theory that makes direct contact with real systems in the field, and provides us with a detailed understanding of what underpins a whole area of population dynamics.
