Book Description
Written in a very straight-forward and practical, yet research-based, style that users, regardless of their age/gender/nationality/race/etc. find engaging because it focuses on their personal need to enhance their effectiveness, career potential (e.g., salaries, promotions, job choice and flexibility), and general well-being (the book takes work/life issues seriously). The book begins by summarizing the research that focuses on what characteristics predict managerial and professional success and which characteristics predict failure. The subsequent chapters then present each of the characteristics that predict success in more detail, as well as tools and techniques for enhancing readers' personal and professional success. For beginning to mid-level executives.

Paula helps students gain personal mastery.......2007-09-05
I've used Paula's book for undergraduate teaching with very good success. Students find her point of view interesting and enjoy the read. This is not the standard OB textbook with a "march of failed theories". Instead, Paula effectively knits observations, insights, research from a host of traditions toward insights for managing the daily life of sensible beings.

Well researched and practical.......2002-07-02
A really well rounded book about the many dimensions of management....of particular interest is the chapter on understanding and building trust.
Real help for real issues.......2001-02-23
Dr. Caproni hits the nail on the head with this very practical book based on real knowledge (not just supposition). Developing the best in the people in our organizations (easy to want, and hard to do) will help leaders do more with less -- fewer people, less unnecessary change, less "blow it up and start again". Those are the hidden costs that will eat our lunch in competitive environments. I'm glad for the help this book offers.
Management development gurus take note.......2001-01-16
The book is first rate in its relevance, freshness of approach, organization and presentation. The combination of exercises, self-assessment tools, current research and statistics, and realistic perspective on the diverse, global, technology-driven workplace makes the book an extremely valuable tool. No fluff or fill here. This book is packed with information and useful tools for managers, executives, consultants, educators, and trainers. This one has legs, folks. Buy it, read it, and use it.
For the past six years, I have used Caproni's materials and ideas in executive and professional education programs with groups of managers from throughout the globe. They really respond to the way she organizes material, presents important ideas, and brings together critical management knowledge from several domains that are usually treated separately.
21st Century Reality Rules.......2001-01-05
I loved the fact that Ms. Caproni utilized a decididly non north american white male perspective. From the delightful family picture on the back cover to the diverse source material she really understands how the changing landscape of our world, both personal and workplace impacts the skills needed to manage. As an experienced consultant, fronline workplace warrior, digerati and MOM, I can tell her advice is obviously imformed by experience and her critical mind. Read it just to impress your friends with my (and I predicte soon to be the worlds) favorite new word Bricolage. Sould be required reading for all first time managers as well as anyone who aspires to work, live and love well. The practical free and credible assessments are worth the price of the book.

Product Description
You won't find a more enthusiastic guide to the night sky than Mike Lynch, and you won't find a better guidebook to our night sky than New England SkyWatch. Mike Lynch has led stargazing classes for over 30 years and has instructed thousands of would-be backyard astronomers (and maybe a few would-be professional astronomers)! Now with New England SkyWatch you can easily pick up what beginning and advanced stargazers, age 12 and up, have learned in his popular stargazing classes: Use the detailed seasonal constellation charts to quickly identify their main stars and find "celestial goodies" such as star clusters, nebulae, and other galaxies. Enjoy the stories and mythology of characters for whom the constellations are named, including Orion the Hunter, Cassiopeia the Queen, and Perseus the Hero. Locate the most prominent seasonal constellations with easy-to-use monthly star maps designed especially for New England's northern latitude. Learn about the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, planets, as well as comets, meteor showers, and aurora borealis. There's even a planet locator guide good through 2015! Gain firsthand advice on purchasing a telescope and other stargazing equipment, plus find listings of local astronomy resources. Your stargazing will never be the same again!
Customer Reviews:
New telescope companion.......2005-09-11
I recently bought a new telescope, rekindling a childhood interest, and looked for an introductory but not childish star book to go with it. New England StarWatch fits that role perfectly. Its full-page monthly star charts help you get oriented and find things. These are simple and clearly printed; the spiral binding and black-on-white format make them useful outdoors. Elsewhere, descriptions of individual constellations (organized by season) include lists of "celestial goodies" such as double stars, nebulae and galaxies to look for. Beautiful full-page color pictures show how such goodies might appear if you owned the Hubble Telescope, but Lynch also provides practical advice about whether binoculars, a small telescope, or a large (amateur) telescope is needed to see something. I've had fun evenings searching out the sights Lynch describes, and knowing that the fuzzy gray blob in my scope is a glimpse of that awesome red and purple cloud in the book.
The star charts, photos and constellation guides with "goodies" have been worth the price of the book for me, but there's quite a bit of other material as well -- a well-illustrated basic astronomy course, and also some wry retellings of constellation myths. Seasoned amateur astronomers would find this book too basic, but I recommend it for others who are newer to the game, and starting to find their way around the stars.

After the Dinosaurs: The Age of Mammals (Life of the Past)
ASIN: 0521340411 |
Book Description
The family Equidae have an extensive fossil record spanning the past 58 million years, and the evolution of the horse has frequently been used as a classic example of long-term evolution. In recent years, however, there have been many important discoveries of fossil horses, and these, in conjunction with such new methods as cladistics, and techniques such as precise geochronology, have allowed us to achieve a much greater understanding of the evolution and biology of this important group. This book synthesizes the large body of data and research relevant to an understanding of fossil horses from several disciplines including biology, geology and paleontology. Using horses as the central theme, the author weaves together in the text such topics as modern geochronology, paleobiogeography, climate change, evolution and extinction, functional morphology, and population biology during the Cenozoic period. This book will be exciting reading for researchers and graduate students in vertebrate paleontology, evolution, and zoology.
Customer Reviews:
Horses and Evolution.......2007-07-01
The horse is often cited as one of the shining examples of evolution. It is even more often cited by CreationISTs and Intelligent Design proponents as an example of the folly of "evolutionists". CreationISTs consistently misquote, misreprensent and fabricate their arguments about horse evolution.
MacFadden's book is not strictly about the evolution of horses. Individual specimens are not cited, measurements are not provided, and character matrices are absent. Strictly speaking, it is a book about evolution, which just happens to use the author's extensive knowledge of fossil horses as its exemplars.
MacFadden discusses the nature of paleontology and the nature of fossils. He talks about how we erect a chronological structure for our fossils. He explicates various evolutionary processes, including variation, speciation and extinction. Functional morphology, population dynamics, ecology - all are described in terms which the non-specialist can appreciate, and are illustrated using the fossil record of horses.
For those who struggle daily against the incursion of religion into the science classroom, I cannot imagine a better preparation than a careful reading of this book. For anyone interested in learning just what a paleontologist does it provides a wide-based introduction. High school students will find it fascinating; it could be used as an excellent text for a college level course in evolutionary biology, and vertebrate paleontologists will find it a welcome state-of-the-art summary of what we know about the evolution of the horse.
My go-to reference book!.......2007-04-11
This is the book that I recommend highly to our journal readers. I've been using it for reference myself since it was published. Information about the evolution of the horse's foot is my area of interest, so I cannot really comment on other aspects of the book. We cite this book frequently and I am amazed at how many people (and academics) in the horse field still don't know about it. I'm trying to change that!
Fran Jurga
Hoofcare & Lameness: Journal of Equine Foot Science
Best fossil horse book out there.......2003-10-18
I'm a novice trying to understand the incredibly complex history, 58 million years, of the horse. I went on a dig and had the fun of finding bones and teeth from Miocene thru Pleistocene horses. I had a lot of questions after I got home about various issues raised by what we found. This book answered them and more. It's a real scientist's book, not a coffee table book, so it takes some concentrated reading, but I learned things that allowed me to go the natural history museum and perceive the fine points in the display. There were interesting asides also about the perspectives of scientists from the last few centuries, and earlier graphics to compare to new ones illustrating how the understanding of evolution has changed over the years. I'm going on another dig and this time I may know what I'm looking at.
Primarily for the specialist.......2000-10-11
I got this book brand new for 50 pence as apparently the book had no buyers.
For 10,000 years human civilization depended on horses and unsurprisingly horse evolution was a hot scientific topic at a time when people had no faster means of personal transport. History and its emperors are littered with tales of the horse and the equine symbollism in war and heroism is still with us. Given such a magical subject McFadden's book represents a somewhat staid academic account in the style of a scientific paper. Peppered with many references McFadden treats the reader like an academic used to such presentation and fails to enliven his topic. He touches all too briefly on the cultural importance of the horse and the book lacks any decent illustrations save several charts and technical drawings.
McFadden has certainly put in a great deal of hard work and covers many topics from the history of the study of horse evolution to geneology, geological time and the work he and his co-workers have produced. The book is too specific on the Equidae and does not deal adequately with recently extinct members of this family like the quagga and prehistoric species. Nor does it explain clearly why horses may have dissapeared from the Americas. Parts of the book, e.g., the limb locking mechanism were for me hard to follow. The book is afraid of speculation.
It provides ample materials and references to the student and to the paleontologist and is a good textbook. It fails to dramatise its subject and to attract a "lay audience". We are not really treated to what makes horses so special but to its credit it represents a highly authoritative and up to (its) date digest.

Book Description
Optical data storage represents a major chapter in the history of information storage and the invention of rewritable media has indisputably been an essential addition to the optical storage family. With the multiple overwrite feature, rewritable optical discs have found application in consumer DVD+RW video recorders, professional archiving systems and computer drives for data storage, replacing the floppy disc in the latter case.
Optical Data Storage provides an overview of the recording principles, materials aspects, and application areas of phase-change optical storage. Some theoretical background is given to familiarize the reader with the basics of the phase-change processes. Elements of data recording, including mark formation, eraseability, direct overwrite strategies, data quality and data stability, etc are explained and extensively discussed. A mark formation model is described and used throughout the whole book to back-up measurement results and support the discussed applications. Two major aspects – high-speed and dual-layer recording – are considered in depth and solutions to achieve higher performance are analyzed.
Optical Data Storage is aimed at a broad range of readers – from university teams studying the subject to industrial media manufacturers requiring insights into performance of rewritable optical media.

Good overview of the field.......2007-08-25
I read this book on my way back from a conference in Colorado and I wasn't happy that Silicon Valley is so close to Colorado.
Intro and 5 chapters give full good overview of optical data storage and plenty of experimental data.
Book is very useful for students and engineers (optics, material sci., mechanics) and everybody who want to know how his/her DVD or CD is working.

Lost in a Florida disappearing from sight
A tremendously funny and sad came-of-age narrative that recalls the hearty, chaotic family fictions of Richard Russo and Ralph Lombreglia, with the cold steel screams of Thom Jones or Denis Johnson lurking in the basement. Sheppard is a pitiless observer of all the foibles that make up the wasted lives of the small among us, yet he arranges these bits of madness in graceful, unexpected forms.
Customer Reviews:
Better than average, perhaps.......2002-06-03
He's got something--I think it's a talent for telling or writing stories & an interest, too, in style (though not a style I'm at all crazy about--it's still a good sign).
He's much too much in love with gratuitous & zany violence to suit me--& he seems otherwise self-indulgent as well--he doesn't seem to have much taste--he tries to pull off gags in the course of narration that are weak in themselves & beside the point--he skips some of the (apparent) essentials of building (esp. character) or of managing a consistent & coherent narrative--& even so he gets quite a few small & terrific effects, including humor & probably accurate social observation & (even though it can be cheap) surprise.
He'd be better--this seems perhaps a naive thing to say but in this particular case I really think it's to the point--if he had more interesting people & subject matter--if he could write about things he didn't have to look down on & make fun of--but he's a lot better than average, in my opinion.
