Book Description
Like top-notch athletes, corporations need to stay in fighting shape to compete. And assessing the fitness-both functionally and financially-of every corporate operation and activity is the role played by the benchmarking process. Not simply a detailed company physical that isolates operational weaknesses and fiscal bloat, when effectively implemented, benchmarking also represents the cure-a set of best practice guidelines for maximizing performance, guiding the company toward corporate health, while cleaning up operating inefficiencies and financial waste.
Written by a leading benchmarking authority, Benchmarking Strategies is a state-of-the-art how-to manual for transforming your organization into a lean, optimally performing endurance runner-no matter what sort of shape your company is in now. In a practical, user-friendly format, Reider helps you identify just what sort of businesses your company is in (and not in), develop a set of benchmarks and basic business principles as part of a corporate strategic plan, identify areas or functions that need improvement, implement best practices in a companywide program of continuous improvement, and develop performance measures to chart genuine gains as a learning organization.
A best practice is defined not simply as an operational change that is cost effective, but one that moves the company toward fulfilling the expectations of its stakeholders (from boards of directors, CEOs, and frontline employees to vendors and customers). The book then offers a practical vision of achievable excellence in which every activity affects every other and every employee and department is a shaper of corporate destiny. In clear, practical language, Benchmarking Strategies de-cants the often unwieldy theory behind corporate improvement into expert advice on:
* Benchmarking principles, techniques, and implementation
* Identifying your company's basic operational principles
* Benchmarks for organizational growth-including cost reductions, price and sales volume increases, and new distribution channels
* Strategies for gaining competitive advantage-not just meeting your competition but surpassing them
* How effective benchmarking encompasses both internal and external needs
Offering the insight, wisdom, and hard-nosed realism of a seasoned coach, Benchmarking Strategies is the essential manual to making excellence an ongoing reality in every corner of your firm and to transforming a good organization into a world-class competitor.
Find out how operationally and financially fit your company really is . . .and the secret to transforming it into a tough competitor if it isn't. Both the diagnosis and the cure for an out-of-shape organization, benchmarking is one of the most effective regimens available for transforming any company into an optimally functioning, world-class performer. Used in a program of continuous improvement, benchmarking is a process that allows a company to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of each of its activities and operations and put in place a set of best practices designed to move the company toward improved performance and profits. And Benchmarking Strategies shows you exactly how.
Written by one of its leading experts, Benchmarking Strategies is a practical manual to benchmarking principles, techniques, and implementation, outlining just how to set up benchmarking criteria, monitor overall progress-while fulfilling the expectations of the company's various stakeholders.
Inside, you'll find expert guidance on:
* Developing benchmarks and basic business principles for your company as part of a detailed corporate strategic plan.
* Identifying internal operational areas or functions to benchmark and establishing best practice target triggers for building internal excellence in Using external benchmarks to compare your company to competitors, industry, and best-in-class functions to become the best you can be.

Book Description
This Elibron Classics book is a reprint of a 1860 edition by John W. Parker & Son, London.
Book Description
Towards the Edge of the Universe is the second edition of a successful textbook, previously published by Wiley-Praxis.It reviews the latest discoveries and ideas, discusses areas of controversy, and presents a variety of observational data, in a way suitable as an introduction to cosmology for university students studying the following courses: Astronomy, Astrophysics, Cosmology, Partical Physics, Theoretical Physics and Space Science. The author considers the most contemporary views of cosmology by describing the Big Bang model (its problems as well as its usefulness), and begins with a comprehensive account of the universe and its components, providing a sound introduction for the student. A generally descriptive (rather than purely mathematical) approach makes the book accessible to all levels of students Priced at an affordable level for students - despite the inclusion of many illustrations and some full colour photographs - the previous Wiley-Praxis (1997) edition was successful in Europe and America. This new edition incorporates some revisions, but is expected to continue as a useful textbook with a valuable "additional market" among serious astronomers.

On the Cutting Edge of New Discoveries.......2000-05-21
It seems the world stood in awe as colourized pictures of the newly fixed Hubble Space Telecope were made public. Since then our knowledge of the universe -- thanks to Hubble, satellite-based devices and other instrumentation -- grows at an accelerating pace. Most recent advances in cosomology often circulate first among scientists and appear in technical journals. Lay news is reported in the popular media, but it is by its very nature piece meal.
Therefore, I was pleased to find Clark's newly released, 2nd edition of "Towards the Edge of the Universe". Tantalized by earlier books, I was eager to find an update on recent advances in our understanding of the universe in summary form. This 2nd edition includes new chapters on the architecture of matter and the large scale structure of the universe. Information on the expansion of universe and the formation of galxies has been broadened to include new discoveries. I am not an astrophysicist and cannot evaluate how comprehensive or thorough Clark is in his review. Such judgement is better left perhaps to his peers.
This is not a beginner's book. If you are first coming to the field with a general interest, you would be better served by easy to read books such as "Gems of Hubble" or "Origins: Our Place in Hubble's Universe" --both with spectacular Hubble photographs. "Close Encounters" is geared toward high school students. "Hubble Revisited" is a meatier introductory book.
Clark's book is technical. If you have a college major in physics, chemistry and/or astrophysics (or just enjoyed these college courses), you should be able to understand this book, although it might be challenging for some readers. If you've read James B. Kaler's books, "Cosmic Clouds" and "Stars", Clark's book should be comprehensible, although sometimes more technical in places.
If you are an amateur astronomer and can understand, for example, Sky and Telescope's more techinical articles with ease, you'll find Clark's book probably readable, but very definitely more technical. For the math-phobic, do not be turned away by the apparent liberal sprinkling of mathematical formuals. Everything is explained in English, before the technical formulas are presented.
I personally enjoyed Clark's book and welcomed it into my library. For myself, I am well grounded in scientific research in an unrelated field. Reading Clark's book, I spent little time on most math formuals, had to re-read some sentences, and skipped over some of the very intricate discussions of details, because Clark could make the overall picture clear.

A refined sense of style and a superb introductory section set Rubber Stamp Celebrations apart from many others on the subject. The authors carefully walk us through all the tools and supplies, provide a good overview on understanding color and design, and explain a wide variety of techniques, with each step illustrated in full color. A number of these techniques are not often covered in other books: water embossing, paper layering, collaging, masking, stamping on modeling compounds to create a dimensional image, and embellishing with trinkets, ribbons, and other findings. Excellent step-by-step directions accompany a vast array of projects organized by theme: the subject of weddings, for example, brings us gold-embossed gift boxes, a photo album, toasting glasses, an embossed velvet handbag, and a unity candle. Christmas offers cards and ornaments galore, plus a charming plate and tumbler for Santa's milk and cookies. For birthdays there are cards, wrappings, party hats, and gifts, such as a journal or a silk scarf. Each holiday is given its due, as are housewarmings, garden parties, baby showers, and everyday occasions that require just the right hand-crafted card. With lovely subdued colors and many touches of gold, the items have a sophisticated Victorian feel. Some projects are more advanced, but novices can probably handle many of them. And just browsing through the beautiful pages offers plenty of inspiration. --Amy Handy
Book Description
With rubber stamping and basic decorative methods such as découpage and watercolor, anyone can make greeting cards, invitations, wrapping paper, decorative boxes, scarves, journals, picture frames, and more. Vibrant color photographs illustrate the effects stamping creates on papers, fabric, wood, candles, clay, glass, and ceramics. Hundreds of creative ideas to copy and adapt.
Customer Reviews:
Great book-- sad angel policy.......1999-10-21
I am an avid stamper, and PSX used to be the grand dame until I read their demonic angel policy. They are pretty tight with their stamps and what you can do with them and go beyond the, "Just-make-sure-you-hand-stamp-as-opposed-to- reproducing-our-images" policy of other firms. It is hard to sell your work and you can't really donate it to an auction without prior approval. If you enjoy stamping, look into other firms like Magneta or Mirkwood for their stamps and READ THE ANGEL POLICY (limited angel policy is a warning to run!) but definitely buy this book.
Beautiful projects organized around a theme for each month.......1999-01-13
The projects in this book are shown in beautiful photographs with easy to follow instructions. There are twelve "groups" of projects - one group for each month and each month has a theme. The cards are stunning. As an avid stamper, there were new techniques described that I have not seen at my local stamp stores nor in other books or magazines. If you like to look at beautiful examples for inspiration, then I highly recommend this book.
Complete technique book.......1998-11-19
This book has alot on techniques and not just for cards. This book is nice for beginners and more advanced. It gives you many ideas to branch out with. As an avid stamper, I would recommend this book to all.
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
When Gavin Penfold finished work that evening, he was thinking only of looking forward to an evening drink with his wife before dinner at their beautiful home in the country. But his journey was soon brutally interrupted by men who hijacked his car, gagged and blindfolded him, before wedging him in the back well. One of these mysterious captors drove Gavin's car while the other two guarded him on the journey to he knew not where. On the way, the car hit and seriously injured a woman who then inevitably became involved in the kidnappers' plans. Soon Gavin was forced to learn that in certain circumstances it was easier for the police and the lawyers to believe a lie than the truth.
Customer Reviews:
AN ODD ONE.......2004-02-07
This is an odd, dark novel that is more John Grisham thriller than conventional British whodunnit. Gavin Penfold is an IT security expert at a large bank, living a successful and primly conventional life. On his way home late on a Friday night, he and his new Jaguar are hijacked, changing all that. The hijackers accidentally hit a pedestrian and leave Gavin to face the music after forcing him to consume a huge amount of whiskey. He is eventually charged with DUI and the hit and run accident.
The CID officers Penfold encounters do not resemble the stereotypes we are accustomed to in British mysteries. There is no aristocratic chief inspector who writes poetry in between murder investigations; no female detective inspector driven to prove herself by solving crimes at all costs. There aren't even any mild-mannered (but canny) rural constables to plod after the truth. The detectives Gavin meets are run-of-the-mill civil servants. Some are lazy womanizers, some are misanthropic bullies, and some are dedicated, hard-working policemen. The soliciters and barristers don't resemble Grisham's heros any more than the detectives resemble their BBC counterparts.
No one is murdered in this book. The main casualites are Gavin's illusions and his innocence. The ending is short, cynical, and unsatisfactory.
