Ultimate Rewards: What Really Motivates People to Achieve (Harvard Business Review Book Series)
Manufacturer: Harvard Business School Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0875848087 |
Book Description
In the knowledge economy, harnessing the power of people to do their best work is more critical than ever. This stellar collection--edited by GE chief learning officer Steve Kerr--brings together the best articles and interviews from the Harvard Business Review on individual and organizational motivation. From San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh on the arc of utilization that creates a plan for moving people through the organization to GE Chairman Jack Welch on the company's famous Work-Out program that transforms attitudes and energizes employees, this book includes many helpful examples of ultimate or true rewards. These articles--as well as pieces by Peter Drucker, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Ronald Heifetz, and others--examine the sources of motivation and offer numerous strategies for compensating employees and driving organizational excellence: power, accountability, responsibility, organizational culture, coaching, team work, incentives, goal setting, and employee ownership.
Ultimate Rewards tackles many of the hard issues and controversial questions about how to reward, what to reward, and who should reward, including:
Determining whether employees really value intrinsic benefits like self-actualization and job enrichment more than extrinsic ones like pay Using promotions to recognize performance in a downsized, de-layered business environment when specific jobs at the next level may not be readily available Instituting reversible compensation, including bonuses, incentive pay, and compensation at risk Making financial as well as nonfinancial bonuses visible. Designing efficient rewards that motivate future performance as well as thank people for past performance Measuring and rewarding results to minimize dysfunctional behavior Creating opportunities for peers, customers, and subordinates to participate in the review process
Framed by Kerr's provocative introduction, Ultimate Rewards highlights successes and failures as well as the conflicting opinions on what works and what doesn't, as it addresses the perennial challenge of ensuring top-quality performance and winning results.

Product Description
Everyone needs to feel that their efforts are appreciated. The Exemplar Employee award picks up where a paycheck and a "thank you" leave off. It targets direct care workers-the employees who leave their jobs most often. It tells workers who go beyond the call of duty, and stand out because of their caring and dedication, that they are appreciated without reservation. It also places them in a select group. Peers who are also exemplars elect the new exemplars, bestow them with a ring, and invite them to continue to be role models for others. Art Dykstra and Deborah Gustafson explain the nomination process, how to inform employees, and the costs and benefits of an exemplar program.

Celestial Objects for Modern Telescopes: Practical Amateur Astronomy Volume 2 (Practical Amateur Astronomy)
Michael A. Covington Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521524199 |
Book Description
Based on field notes made by Michael Covington throughout his career as an amateur astronomer, this guide covers both the traditional and novel approaches to studying the night sky. In addition to the more standard techniques, it discusses the latest modern resources available to today's astronomer, such as personal computers, the internet, and computerized telescopes. Covington includes practical advice on site selection and weather; detailed instructions for observing the Sun, Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects; and newer specialities such as satellite observing and the use of astronomical databases. Written to complement How to Use a Computerized Telescope, this book appeals to astronomers with more traditional equipment. Michael A. Covington is an associate research scientist at the University of Georgia. He is a computational linguist trained in the computer processing of human languages and the computer modeling of human logical reasoning, and a widely recognized expert on the Prolog programming language. He is the author of nine books including Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms, Seventh Edition (Barron's, 2000), Astrophotography for the Amateur (Cambridge, 1999), PROLOG Programming in Depth (Simon & Schuster, 1996), Cambridge Eclipse Photography Guide (1993), and Syntactic Theory in the High Middle Ages (Cambridge, 1985). A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Covington is a Contributing Editor to, and former "Q&A" columnist of Poptronics magazine.Customer Reviews:
Just "Very Good" , not Perfect!.......2004-01-08
My only criticism is the assumption that all users will be using computerized telescopes , and completely ignores those of us who "star hop" by choice , and not necessity. The lack of star hopping descriptions downgrades my rating to a strong 4 stars.
Highly recommended.
I've got a "Go To" scope, now what?.......2003-01-09

8. Stars - physical properties
9. Double and multiple stars
10. Variable stars
11. Clusters, nebulae, and galaxies
PART II - 200 interesting stars and deep-sky objects
12. How these objects were chosen
13. The January-February sky (R.A. 6h-10h)

17. The September-October sky (R.A. 22h-2h)
18. The November-December sky (R.A. 2h-6h)
Appendices
A. Converting decimal minutes to seconds
B. Precession from 1950 to 2000
C. Julian date, 2001-2015
The logical follow up for "How to Use a Computerized Telescope", this volume shows one how to use the various sources available to find the objects one is interested in studying. If I had this book when I first bought my LX200, I would have developed better habits in planning my observing sessions by being able to identify objects in the manner that the telescope has them identified in its database to find them quicker to allow more time for study and or imaging.

Advanced Organic Chemistry: Structure and Mechanisms (Part A) (Advanced Organic Chemistry / Advanced Organic Chemistry)
Francis A. Carey , and Richard J. Sundberg Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 0306462435 |
Book Description
Since its original appearance in 1977,
Advanced Organic Chemistry has found wide use as a text providing broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. The Fourth Edition provides updated material but continues the essential elements of the previous edition. The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. The material in Part B is organized on the basis of reaction type with emphasis on reactions of importance in laboratory synthesis. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.
The Fourth Edition updates certain topics that have advanced rapidly in the decade since the Third Edition was published, including computational chemistry, structural manifestations of aromaticity, enantioselective reactions and lanthanide catalysis.
The two parts stand alone, although there is considerable cross-referencing. Part A emphasizes quantitative and qualitative description of structural effects on reactivity and mechanism. Part B emphasizes the most general and useful synthetic reactions. The focus is on the core of organic chemistry, but the information provided forms the foundation for future study and research in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, biological chemistry and physical properties of organic compounds.
The New Revised 5th Edition will be available shortly. For details, click on the link in the right-hand column.

Advanced Organic Chemistry, Part A:Structure and Mechanisms
Francis Carey Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0306351161 |
Book Description
The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, major advances have been made in the development of efficient new methods, particularly catalytic processes, and in means for control of reaction stereochemistry. This volume assumes a level of familiarity with structural and mechanistic concepts comparable to that in the companion volume, Part A, Structures and Mechanisms. Together, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
The Girl Who Saved Baseball is humorous, yet occasionally bittersweet. Written from the viewpoint of an aging minor league baseball manager who finds new purpose in life by guiding four promising players. One is a girl who has a mission not only to make the major leagues, but also to "save" baseball from the stigma of have and have-not teams, runaway salaries, and the temptations of steroids.
