Customer Reviews:
Young Person's Pccupational Outlook Handbook.......2000-05-27
This book is a well-organized reference for children from 1stthrough 12th grade, but targeted at those under 12. The book is not adry page by page drool of words. The quick reference information is displayed pictorally. Each job is given a single page, and divided into several components. Each page has a short paragraph explaining day to day responsibilities, and a quick reference section that delineates education required, earnings and job outlook. Younger readers will be interested in the `subjects to study' paragraph which gives the reader a good basis for what academic areas they need to be strong in. Each job description has a `discover more' paragraph that takes the younger reader through a hands on example of what the job entails. The `something extra' section for each job adds interesting facts about the job that are not readily apparent. This book is a must for guidance counselors at all levels and parents should strongly consider adding it to their library.

Book Description
Frank Cross provides a comprehensive treatment of the widely feared problem of environmentally induced cancer. The author takes a threefold approach to the problem, first examining the cancers themselves and what is known about their causes and then exploring both the government's regulation of these environmental pollutants and the legal remedies available to victims of such cancers. Throughout, new proposals for regulating carcinogens and compensating the victims of environmental cancer are discussed. In Part I, Cross addresses the significant and unique problems presented by the disease of cancer, demonstrating that the limits of scientific knowledge, the absence of a demonstrable safe threshold of exposure and other special features of the disease create a unique "cancer problem" for government. The second section examines the various risk-management approaches from which a regulatory agency may choose. As Cross demonstrates, government must identify carcinogens, assess the risks they present, and choose control methods--a complex task made even more difficult by the conflicting claims of industry and environmental groups. He concludes this section by proposing future approaches for more effective regulation, including prioritization of the greatest hazards and adoption of a moderate, feasibility-based control program. The final chapters explore legal obstacles to victim compensation and argue for fundamental changes in existing common law doctrines to enhance the ability of victim/plaintiffs to recover adequate damages.
Book Description
The standard against which all other star atlases are measured, this best-selling atlas has been completely revised and updated! Each version of Sky Atlas 2000.0 contains 26 charts covering the whole sky and showing 81,312 single, multiple, and variable stars of magnitude 8.5 and brighter and 2,700 deep-sky objects. Includes close-up charts of such areas as the celestial poles and the Virgo-Coma galaxy region, as well as an acetate coordinate-grid overlay for determining accurate positions. A must for any stargazer!
Desk Unlaminated Version: Stars and deep sky objects are black on a white background. Unbound and printed on heavy paper.
Customer Reviews:
Very good but has a couple of flaws.......2006-08-12
For years the Sky Atlas 2000.0 has been the most popular atlas step up from a 6th magnitude atlas. The 8th magnitude limit is deep enough to enable users to find Neptune and the brighter asteroids. The large charts, while they can be a bit awkward to handle, are great to view, as they show wide swaths of sky.
The Second Edition brought some significant improvements: a useful step up to magnitude 8.5, galaxy shapes which show size and orientation, better representation of star magnitude, detailed charts of the Orion region and Virgo Galaxy Cluster. If you are debating between a used First Edition and a new Second Edition, get the Second; it's worth the extra money.
A few shortcomings remain. The charts are arranged in ascending order of right ascension. This presents problems with editions which are bound on the left side. When users reach the right edge of the chart, they have to stifle the instinct to continue right to the next page, force themselves to reverse direction, and turn--of all places--to the previous page instead. The same with the left edge. Charts should be ordered in descending RA like Uranometria or Millennium. Ordering by ascending RA is a pointless tradition.
Some of the versions are bound at the top, which solves the problem of the chart sequence--and makes the book less floppy to handle--but makes it harder to search for charts. Since the chart number is at the top right, the user cannot see what page they have their fingers on until the book is completely open.
The pages of the laminated versions are very sturdy for field use but hard to grasp and separate, especially when moist with dew. This and the previous problem could be solved by adding numbered, graspable tabs to the bottom of each chart.
A badly-needed improvement to the atlas came in a subsequent printing of the second edition: around the edges of each chart are noted the numbers of the charts which adjoin it. This greatly simplifies navigation through the atlas. It would be good to take this measure a step further and, on each chart, mark adjacent chart borders as well to save guesswork as to where each one ends and the next begins.
The many virtues of this atlas have been amply documented by other reviewers. The space I have spent on the shortcomings is simply an attempt to round out the picture. The many improvements already made to this work speak well of the publisher's commitment to an excellent atlas. The Sky 2000.0 is now only a couple steps short.
So which atlas to choose for your observations? I would completely ignore the 6th magnitude atlases on the market. For a beginning to intermediate observer, the magnitude 7.6 Pocket Sky Atlas is very well designed and affordable. For intermediate observing, the Sky Atlas 2000.0 is an excellent choice. For advanced observers who frequently go deep, I would suggest skipping the Sky Atlas and bringing both the Pocket and the Millennium along on outings.
Many versions of Sky Atlas 2000.......2000-06-18
Wil Tirion's sky altas is a must for any astronomer. Every astronomer I know has some version. This atlas comes in many varieties, but they all contain the same information. Options are:
a)black stars on white or white stars on black,
b)unbound, spiral, soft cover, hard cover, and laminated.
If you plan to use your copy under dark skies, choose the black star on white version. Skip all versions of the white stars on black - they are just too difficult to see. A major shortcoming of this atlas is the lack of constellation lines. This makes locating the point of interest much more difficult in the dark. You can draw helpful lines and other notes rather easily on the unlaminated, white background charts, so that's the version I chose.
To protect your investment from the dew, you can put your copies in a laminated portfolio, available from office supply stores. You can slide out your chart to make notes, then replace it to keep it dry. This will also allow you to view 2 pages at a time - less chart flipping when what you want to see is near a chart's edge.
You need to get a version of this atlas, just make sure you get the one that best serves your needs.

Book Description
Ankerberg and Weldon present the major arguments against evolution, including fossil and scientific support, provide the facts on the day–age theory, the gap theory, and progressive creationism, and examine the evidence for creationism.
Customer Reviews:
a cross-section of the debate.......2007-03-22
This book is primarily a sampling of some of the literature available on the creation/evolution issue, such as The Long War Against God, Bones of Contention, The Origin of Species Revisited, Darwin's Black Box, etc. It mainly consists of quotes from many sources, and little by way of original analysis that hasn't been expressed in any of the other works. As such, it is a helpful introduction to the issues and a good springboard from which to explore some of these more detailed works. As a collection of many different viewpoints, it does serve as a good argument against evolution from many different areas. This quote sums up the book pretty well:
"'It is unfair, unethical, and demeaning to science as a profession for evolutionists to incessantly charge creation scientists with quoting out of context, misquoting, distorting science, and telling outright falsehoods. These tactics are simply an admission of weakness on the part of evolutionists and of their inability to refute scientific challenges to their sagging theory. If the facts are on their side, they should simply state the facts, and the facts would speak for themselves.' [-Gish]" (56)
There were a couple of things I found interesting. In 1992 Ankerberg edited out Stephen Austin's work from a video and book he was working on, in favor of Hugh Ross. Currently (2007) Ankerberg continues to endorse Ross' organization and has himself made several old-earth statements. This book was published right in the middle of these two landmarks (in 1998), and has some interesting features. The recommended reading list contains a book by Austin, but nothing by Ross. In fact, the book specifically mentions him: "Again, many Christians believe God used the Big Bang to create the universe and even that it fits perfectly with Genesis. Astronomer Hugh Ross is probably best known for this view... To the contrary, biblically speaking, is there anything to suggest that God did not use the Big Bang event to create the universe? In fact there is." (270) This to close an entire chapter devoted to the scientific case against the big bang. Ankerberg has also made statements against a literal 24-hour creation day. This book, on the other hand, explicitly states many times the strong scientific and biblical arguments for a literal 24 hour day creation, 6,000 year old universe, and a global flood. He recommends several young-earthers in his book list (Wise, Austin, Morris, etc.) I'm confused. Not about the scientific and biblical evidence, (which seems clearly to support a young earth/global flood), but about John Ankerberg, and where he actually stands on these issues, and why he published this book? It seems kind of two faced to me.
One other area of interest in this book, gleaned from several quotes he took:
"Society for Amateur Scientists `...that life has adapted and changed through time is as well established as the fact that the earth goes round the sun.'" (68)
"Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal: `Evolution...is as well established in science as are the principle of gravity and the fact that the earth orbits the sun....Virtually no active scientist challenges the fact that evolution has occurred." (68)
"Another prominent evolutionist, Sir Julian Huxley, claimed in his famous keynote address at the Darwin Centennial held in 1959 at the University of Chicago, "The first point to make about Darwin's theory is that it is no longer a theory, but a fact. No serious scientist would deny the fact that evolution has occurred, just as he would not deny the fact that the earth goes around the sun." (72)
"Finally, Marston Bates of Harvard University said in his The Nature of Natural History 91950, p.222) that as far as the evidence for evolution is concerned, `there is no more question of this among contemporary scientists than there is of the relative movements of the planets within the solar system.'" (73)
"California Academy of Sciences: `The appropriate place in the science curriculum for the notion that organisms have been designed is the same as that for the notion that the earth is located at the center of the universe.'" (84)
"As atheist Richard Dawkins, author of The Blind Watchmaker and The Selfish Gene, asserts: `The theory is about as much in doubt as [that] the earth goes around the sun.'" (119)
But interestingly:
"Evolutionary cosmologists and astrophysicists cannot explain how, in an exploding universe, matter could ever become concentrated into the intricate systems we see. For example, the M13 globular star cluster contains an estimated one million suns. About 100 such star clusters are known and they apparently surround our galaxy on all sides. `When the distribution of these objects is plotted, it is found that they form a nearly spherical system and that the center of this system is identical with the center of our galaxy.' [-Astronomy, July 1997]" (256-7)
The authors address these quotes, and many others by evolutionary groups, in the context of their argument. Perhaps if the authors would investigate the facts surrounding the current consensus regarding the structure of the solar system and even the universe, they could write another book: "Copernicus' Leap of Faith: Exposing the False Religion of Geokineticism." I won't hold my breath.
Please read a book before submitting a review.......2006-02-15
In grade school I used to try and get away with doing a book report on a book I hadn't actually read and I always got caught out. Now I see why. It is very obvious from the reviews who has read this book and who has not. I have not, and so I can not offer any recommendation or criticsm on the book itself (I had to give a star to make a submission). But I would like to point out that all the people who appear to support the book's position seem to actually have read it and offer details of what they liked or disliked. All but one of those who seem not to support the book's position bash the book or its author without apparently ever having read a single page!
Most awesomest book ever.......2004-12-17
If you think you know anything about the world, read this book and prepare to be shown why you are WRONG! The authors know so much about so many things it is quite astounding. Every scientist needs to read this book. If they did, they would start going to church. It shows that Jesus is scientific, and that the flood was responsible for the fossils. I highly recommend the book. It will inspire your faith. I'm buying another copy for sure. Give the book to all your friends who are `scientific wackos'! Show them they are going to hell if they believe in Darwin. Jesus loves you!
Another Nail! .......2004-09-04
Authors John Ankerberg & John Weldon offer a book, the purpose of which is to be, the "Exposing the False Religion of Evolution."
The reader is treated to examinations of how Darwin's theory became fact. Why evolution is more "religion" than scientific theory. The major arguments against evolution, including fossil and scientific support. The objective evidence that supports creation. And, the difference creation makes in who we are and how we live.
Having a keen interest in the subject, I purchased the text to see if the title delivers what it promised. At more than >340 pages, I found the book to be easy to read and understand. However, I did expect the book to be more scientifically based and fact driven. Regardless, I rated the book at four stars for a very approachable text on a very fervent topic. Just another nail of many in the coffin of evolution. I would recommend the text "Darwin's Black Box," by author Michael Behe for a more scientific evaluation of the topic.
Typical creationist garbage.......2002-09-26
Creation "science" is based solely on the biblical creation myth and for nearly 100 years (more if you count the protests in the 1800's) creationists have been attacking science to desperately convince people that 200 years of scientfic study is wrong.
As always they fail miserably depending solely on the same old lies and misinformation that is the sole basis of so called "evidence".
The truth is, evolution is a reality. The earth is billions of years old. There was never any global flood. Get a real science book if you want to learn science. DLF is worthless.
