    Book Description

Contemporary Issues in Accounting Regulation looks at accounting regulation in a different way. The opening chapters explore the tension between the power of the state and the forces of the market, and other aspects of the political dimension to accounting regulation. The book also examines the process of setting accounting standards, highlighting the crucial role of standard setters in assessing the level of public support for an issue in the face of opposing positions taken by powerful interest groups. In addition, the book provides an introduction to the theoretical framework of accounting regulation, looking at choices between controversial accounting methods and at markets that are characterized by asymmetry of information and beliefs. The final chapters of the book are concerned with creative accounting, deregulation of financial reporting by smaller companies, and the link between price regulation and accounting policy choices.

Journalist Richard Panek begins his historical essay on the telescope with the Hubble Deep Field. This extended exposure by space telescope is a picture that looks out of our galaxy--farther, immeasurably farther, than the human eye has seen before. It exemplifies the purpose of all telescopes: "To address our place in the universe, literally. To size up all of space and figure out where we are in it." How and why did this particular technology have such profound effects?

Panek first considers Galileo, who "raised his new instrument toward the night sky and understood at once that there was more to see--and more to seeing--than meets the eye.... Unlike spectacles or magnifying lenses, the optic tube offered not just a distortion of what was already there, but more. It revealed evidence that was different from what the naked eye could see, evidence that wasn't otherwise there." Panek goes on to look at the, ahem, luminaries of observational astronomy--William Herschel, George Ellery Hale, Edwin Hubble--showing how faith in the telescope grew and our mental image of the universe expanded until "all the assumptions safely based on observation are gone." Panek's prose is vivid and beautiful, sustaining this (curiously) unillustrated book as it traces the astronomer's quest for light and dark, sight and belief. --Mary Ellen Curtin

            Book Description

In the tradition of Longitude comes this story of the telescope and mankind

The human race has not always lived in an infinite universe: for centuries, the earth spun at the center of a giant sphere, and the starlit dome of the night sky marked the ultimate boundary of the cosmos.

The quirky tales of the men who pushed those heavenly limits further and further outward make up Seeing and Believing, Richard Panek's engaging and often amusing account of the telescope, and its significant role in revising humanity's perception of the universe. From Galileo's momentous achievement in 1609 and William Herschel (the musician-turned-astronomer who discovered Uranus) to the crazy brilliance of George Ellery Hale and the minds behind the mighty Hubble space telescope, Panek focuses on the often larger-than-life figures behind our cosmological odyssey. Seemlessly fusing elements of philosophy, politics, literature, and religion, Seeing and Believing chronicles the human mind as it contemplates an ever widening universe.

"Mr. Panek writes about science with practiced fluency. If you haven't yet gotten matter like quasars, pulsars and gamma rays entirely straight in your mind, this book will prove invaluable." --The New York Times

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating story, nicely packaged.......2006-03-10

If you've read "Longitude," by Dava Sobel, and liked it, you'll like Panek's book as well. "Longitude" is the story of the invention of a chronometer sufficiently accurate to allow navigation to a desired longitude. It was instrumental in the mapping and exploration of earth. Similarly, "Seeing and Believing" is the story of another important invention, the telescope, which allowed us to map the cosmos and, as the subtitle says, find our place in the universe.

The story of the telescope begins with glass. More than 100 years before the invention of the telescope people fashioned glass into lenses that corrected poor eyesight, and found practical applications in such things as reading spectacles. It seems odd, I think, that it took so long for someone conceive of using two lenses in a tube to magnify the appearance of distant objects. [Then again, most things seem trivial in hindsight. Original thought is often underrated, and what we mistake as intelligence is often nothing more than the common man's ability to learn tricks taught by genius.]

Most of us have heard of Galileo. He is famous for his use of the telescope, and for his confrontations with the Catholic Church. But Galileo wasn't the inventor of the telescope (though he made significant contributions to the telescope's design). Galileo's genius was in the way he used the telescope to study the heavens, the conclusions he drew from those observations, and how those observations began a scientific and philosophical revolution that emphasized experimentation as the foundation of science.

Before the invention of the telescope the idea hadn't yet been hatched that an instrument could bring distant, essentially invisible, objects into clear view. There were initial suspicions that the telescope was just an elaborate hoax; an optical illusion. This suspicion was aided by design flaws in early telescopes that resulted in large optical aberrations, especially near the edges of the lenses. Placing myself in this historical context I find a certain amount of empathy for the skeptics. But it was overdone. Even when the telescope proved its validity through unambiguous verification, by demonstrating the ability to discern distant terrestrial objects, there was still a suspicion that it might view celestial objects with less accuracy. Old ideas die hard.

It wasn't just healthy skepticism that resulted in initial criticism of celestial observations with the telescope. These observations were diametrically opposed to the philosophical constructs of the day. What these observations showed us was the picture of a universe that was utterly inconsistent with those favored by the religious and philosophical leaders of the day. Eventually, though, even religion couldn't stop the march of progress. The telescope's utility and its power to challenge belief by seeing (as the old saying goes, seeing is believing) led to a revolution not only in our understanding of the cosmos, but the observational bedrock of modern science itself.

A good part of the book takes us up through the story of Galileo, but it doesn't end there. Other astronomers used the telescope to continue to expand our view of the universe. The story has been a rapid one. It wasn't that long ago (within the last century) that scientists weren't sure if the galactic nebula were clouds or groups of stars. Our local galaxy, the Milky Way, was no different. Within the last 100 years the telescope has been at the forefront of a revolution that has expanded the size of the known universe billions of light years and brought into view strange new phenomena like dark matter, black holes, neutron stars, and super novae.

Today's modern telescopes are very different, yet much the same, as the one Galileo first peered through. They are monumental instruments of incredible complexity. Optical telescopes are huge behemoths that use compound mirrors with active focusing to compensate for thermal currents in the earth's atmosphere. Other telescopes, like Hubble, look outside the obscuring atmosphere for an uncluttered look at the universe. Still others explore the universe at very long (infrared) wavelengths, microwave wavelengths, and even radio wavelengths. While they do, a new generation of telescopes, like the European Space Agency's (ESA) XMM-Newton X-ray satellite, explores the universe at wavelengths indicative of the most violent activity in the universe.

Though different in almost all their mechanical respects, modern telescopes do one thing essentially the same as Galileo's instrument; they open up the universe to our view and explode many of our pre-existing concepts about the universe. And, perhaps most importantly, they guide our quest to understand our place in the universe.

This is a small book with a surprising amount of information within its pages. It can be read easily in a week, and it's small enough to carry to the park or library. The book is easy to read, very well written, entertaining and informative. I thoroughly loved it.

3 out of 5 stars How the Telescope Opened our Eyes and Minds to the Heavens.......2002-02-22

The key word in the subtitle is "Minds" as one soon learns. In the first half of the book, Panek describes how the telescope opened our eyes to the heavens and as the second half begins, he opens our eyes to how the progression began in earnest to the opening of our minds to the heavens. Certainly Galileo opened many minds to possibilities in the heavens that they had not considered: mountains on the Moon, moons orbiting Jupiter, phases of Venus, and so forth. What the eyes could see through the Galileo's perspicillum belied what our minds at the time could see, and the stretching of people's minds is treacherous endeavor, as he soon found out. But with stretching, people's minds do open, and the mind-opening exercises of Galileo prepared future centuries of star-gazers for quasars, pulsars, black holes, and a universe far greater than any of Galileo's contemporaries could have ever imagined.

[page 1] "On January 15, 1996, the universe grew by forty billion galaxies."

On the next page, Panek amends his statement to say, "What actually grew that morning, of course, wasn't the size of the universe, but our understanding of it." What happened that morning was a photo made of a single spot of the universe, as small as a grain of sand at arm's length, by the Hubble Space Telescope that was focused on that spot for ten entire days. They found almost 2,000 galaxies in that grain of sand speck of our night sky, which multiplied by the size of the rest of the sky approximates fifty billion galaxies. And this was only looking at visible light. What scientists found was more light than they ever expected and also more dark. Dark spaces for the first time appeared between galaxies, indicating that perhaps we had reached the end of universe with our instruments. Many questions arose.

[page 3] ". . . sometimes the best answer a scientist could want is more questions."

There weren't very many unanswered questions about the structure of the universe when Galileo made his first "tube of long seeing" by modifying a spyglass of a Dutch craftsman and turned it to familiar night sky. Planets and stars were pinpoints of light, everybody knew that; no questions were asked so nobody looked. But when Galileo looked at the night sky through his telescope he saw for the first time in the history of the Earth that planets had size and shapes and colors whereas stars remained pinpoints of light. He saw three pinpoints of light near Jupiter and as he observed on successive nights, sometimes he'd see two of them to the left of Jupiter and sometimes two to the right. How could Jupiter be moving so as to cause theses stars to dart about the planet so? Faced with this unanswerable question, he dared think the previously unthinkable: Perhaps the dots of light were moons orbiting Jupiter! What his eyes saw was incomprehensible until he opened his mind to new possibilities. Each generation since our minds have stretched farther and farther open as our instruments record previously incomprehensible data from the heavens.

4 out of 5 stars Superb little book!.......1999-06-15

This is a very enjoyable book! As a professional astronomer, I can only recommend this book to all people interested on the impact that the telescope had in the history of mankind. Although there is no deep technical description of telescopes here, this is not the point. The telescope has changed and is still changing the way we see the Universe and Panek does a very good job at describing the major contributions of this wonderful invention.

My only complaint is that the last chapter might be a bit too rushed compared to the previous ones since it basically reviews all modern astronomy in about 20 pages. But, otherwise, strongly recommended!

            5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......1998-11-30

Even if you know nothing about astronomy --even if you don't care about astronomy -- you will love this book. It is written so gracefully, so unpretentiously (no 'we are starstuff' bombast) and the story it tells is so intriguing, that even science-shy readers can enjoy -- and learn. (I know because I am one.) The book is very pretty ,too -- small and slender, and with a lovely cover. A perfect present.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, terrific, informative.......1998-10-19

Richard Panek has outdone even his fine Waterloo Diamonds book. In Seeing and Believing, he unites science, history, and philosophy in a very accessible and dramatic way. I would think anyone concerned with contemporary technology issues will want to devour this book, and that it would make a stellar holiday gift for any thinking person.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The use of U.S. DoD medical assets in International Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Operations (IH/DRO) has been extensive in the past and has grown markedly since the end of the Cold War. It is important that DoD personnel understand the complex interagency coordination and political ramifications of their participation in IH/DRO. This thesis examines the history, current planning, interagency coordination, law, DoD doctrine, and budgeting issues affecting the use of DoD medical assets for IH/DRO. To research the current state of IH/DRO execution by the DoD, Federal laws, DoD doctrine, professional journals, and current periodicals were reviewed. Additionally, interviews were conducted with personnel in OSD, USCENTCOM, and the DoD medical community to obtain insight from recent participants in IH/DRO. Research indicated that three levels of control, coordination, and planning exist within the U.S. government to conduct IH/DRO. The strategic level consists of the U.S. Congress, the NCA, USAID, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff: The operational level consists of the Unified Combatant Commands, who conduct contingency planning for their Areas of Responsibility (AOR). Finally, the tactical level consists of the Joint Task Force (JTF) stood up by the Unified Combatant Command to execute the operation. Doctrine to execute these operations is lacking and acknowledged by DoD Doctrine Commands, who are working to address this shortcoming.

                        Description:
MCM-41-typed mesoporous hybrid was investigated as the fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) compared with bonded porous silica for the extraction of aromatic compounds in combination with HPLC. It was found that the mesoporous fiber coatings have higher sensitivity and better selectivity of extraction than bonded silica phase (BSP) coating because their larger surface area and smaller mesopores. Especially the extraction efficiency of modified mesoporous fiber coating was about 3-5 times higher than that of BSP. Moreover the values of distribution ratio for toluene and biphenyl is larger than those for p-xylene and anthracene. Desorption can be performed in mobile phase within 5min. Vigorous stirring and higher temperature can improve the sensitivity of SPME with mesoporous coatings because mass transfer from bulk solution to the mesopores is diffusion controlled in extraction process. The mesoporous fiber coatings lose their extraction selectivity and show rapidly decreasing extraction efficiency by increasing content of methanol in water matrix. Different from general polymeric coatings of SPME. However, the mesoporous coatings show negative effect of ionic strength on extraction. Chemical modification also enhances the hydrothermal stability of mesoporous silica. Custom made SPME fiber with mesoporous hybrid coating still gives good reproducibility after 200 runs. The recovery is 99.86-100.32% and the relative standard deviation is 0.11-1.51% for the determination of studied compounds in spiked water. The limit of detection was in the range 2.00x10^-^8 to 6.91x10^-^9molL^-^1

                          Description:
Four silica gel phases-bound-amine derivatives (I-IV) were prepared based on chemical immobilization technique. The surface modification was identified by determination of the coverage values in mmolg^-^1 via thermal desorption method (1.463-1.807) and elemental analysis of nitrogen and carbon contents (1.089-2.456). Structure characterization related to immobilization of the amine derivatives was accomplished and evaluated by means of infrared (IR) and secondary ion mass spectrometric (SIMS) technique. The modified silica gel phases (I-IV) along with their interaction products with copper(II) were also examined by electron impact mass spectrometric analysis (EI-MS) as a method for evaluation of their thermal stability and structure elucidation. Potentiometric titration as a method of characterization was applied for the modified silica gel phases (II-IV) and their copper(II)-adduct. A series of bi- and trivalent metal ions were selected to focus more aspects of the selectivity properties incorporated into the modified silica gel phases for binding and interaction with these metals based on determination of the distribution coefficient and separation factor. The results of these evaluation processes were found to prove higher selectivity and preference of these four phases for binding with lead(II) and cadmium(II) compared to other metal ions.

                              Description:
Recently, we have reported the solvent versatility and enantiomeric resolution performance of an immobilized amylose derivative-based chiral stationary phase (CSP), CHIRALPAK^(R) IA. The second member in the same series of immobilized CSPs is CHIRALPAK^(R) IB. This new CSP is prepared by immobilizing the chiral selector (the 3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate derivative of cellulose) onto a 5@mm spherical porous silica. The aim of this work is to obtain an insight into the chromatographic performance in enantiomeric separation of this new CSP. In addition, we will explore and exploit its enantioselective ability with ''non-standard'' solvents in the mobile phase. Fundamental information regarding the selection of mobile phases and additives for efficient method development is presented. The CSP stability under ''non-standard'' mobile phase conditions is demonstrated.

                                Description:
The retention of the solute in the stationary phase is the effect of interaction between the solute and the stationary phase and the solute and the mobile phase (solvatation phenomena). Additionally, the components of the mobile phase can modify the surface of the stationary phase, and thus the change the interaction between the solute and the stationary phase. The current paper presents a systematic comparison of retention of @a-, @b- and @c-cyclodextrins (CD) and its permethylated derivatives on the porous graphitic carbon and RP C"1"8 columns. From temperature study, the contribution of @DH and @DS to @DG has been discussed. The physico-chemical interactions of cyclodextrins seem to be similar only in the case of native cyclodextrins (except @c-CD) with the RP C"1"8 column when enthalpy-entropy compensation can be observed. In the case of permethylated cyclodextrins and the RP C"1"8 column, interactions are only similar for individual alcohols. For the PGC column, the influence of individual interactions on individual cyclodextrins seems to be different.

                                  Description:
The chromatographic conditions aiming to a better simulation of n-octanol-water partitioning using a base deactivated silica (BDS) column as stationary phase were investigated for structurally diverse basic and neutral drugs. Extrapolated retention factors logk"w, determined using different methanol fractions as organic modifier, were considered as lipophilicity indices. The effect of n-decylamine and n-octanol as mobile phase additives was examined and the appropriateness of the final retention outcome to reproduce lipophilicity data was evaluated. Moreover, the influence of n-octanol on the linearity of the logk/methanol fraction relationship and on the uniformity of the retention mechanism was investigated. 1:1 correlation between logk"w values and the logarithm of the distribution coefficient (logD) was established for basic drugs in presence of both n-decylamine and n-octanol as mobile phase additives. However, for neutral drugs n-decylamine proved to be a sufficient and more important factor than n-octanol.

This book is a hard-hitting, fast-moving collection of evidence for creation presented in an interesting and entertaining format for young adults. What is the evidence for creation? Why is evolution so appealing? What have we learned over the last century? Here are the cold, hard facts and the ultimate conclusion that there is indeed a Creator.

Specious reasoning; either/or propositions; selective quotes; misunderstandings of atheism and references from fringe scholars or creationist literature.

Interesting from the point of seeing logical fallacies like the lists of pre evolution theory scientists who did not hold to a theory that had not been invented yet; statements that a peach has been fossilized from the 19th century therefore it follows fossilization is a recent process; but not interesting for much else. One of the Phd's stated on the front cover is honorary and both writers have no education in evolution. One is a Christian Camp founder and the other teaches public health and policy.

Far from evolution not been able to take the heat. This book demonstrates the paper thin reasoning for creationism.

The authors do a great job of collecting a large amount of secular data from scientists from around the globe to refute evolution. They provide a great deal of data in a small number of pages. Plus, it is easily accessible for those who don't have a background in science. This is an excellent introduction into the refuting the distortions, dishonesty and hoaxes that are the foundation of evoltuion.

Another similar read is Hanegraaff's book The FACE that demonstrates the farce of evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!! No matter what others say!!!.......2006-06-19

This book is short, but it's still sweet. Dr. White and Dr. Comninellis have put together an impressive amount of info and reasoning into a relatively small space. The best parts for me were reading Darwin's documented doubts about his own theory. As well as the statements of several other noted scientist in the evolution camp referring to the shortcomings of the theory. Basically, if you are a believer in a designer, this book will give you a better understanding of the theory of evolution. If you aren't you'll no doubt say that most of it is made up or false. The theory of evolution cannot be proven or disproved completely. Unless you were standing there at the beginning of time and witnessed the creation, to say otherwise is a lie. Likewise, while creation can never be totally proven (except by God), neither can it be disproved. It is a debate that will rage until the destruction of the human race. Then we will all find out the truth. This book will show a compelling argument for intelligent design, and major flaws in the evolutionary design the rest is up to faith.

After reading Darwin's Demise for a Biology class, I saw Darwin's demise and why evolution can't take the heat. Dr. Joe White and Dr. Nicholas Comninellis discussed key points to why macroevolution has
very little proof while Intelligent Design, however, does. I thought this book was excellent and easy to follow. It points out the fallacies in the theory of evolution. it also shows how scientific evidence that we do have leads back to God as Creator. Darwin's Demise is great and taught me new ways to evaluate evolution using scientific evidence.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book On Debate.......2005-08-13

Well written, engaging and will open many eyes to the lie of evolution. In 177 pages, it touches on origin of life, DNA complexity, what the geology of our world says about Earth's age and history, and fossil evidence that points to creation.

The bogus evolution theory is a rotting, dead corpse. It's been dead and rotting for some time now, with fools who continually insist on throwing make-up on it and squirting it with disenfectant to keep it presentable.

It's dead, folks. Those who continually insist otherwise never present evidence to the contrary, they just name call and belittle believers as idiot fundamentalists.

Here's a challenge--Anyone who wants to paint this book as lacking evidence in proving evolution is a lie, give evidence why this is so. Answer just one of the numerous questions this book claims evolutionists CAN NOT answer. You won't be able to. Not unless you come up with a fairy-tale answer with no scientific evidence.

It's time Christians start waking up and fighting for souls. Satan isn't shy about dragging people into Hell, Christians shouldn't be shy about fighting for the Kingdom of God with truth. Evolution and Christianity cannot be married. Theistic evolution is just as much of a lie as atheistic evolution. Why? Because it undermines the entire Gospel.

The Gospel states the truth that through Adam's sin, all of mankind fell out of an eternal relationship with God. God repaired that broken relationship through the Pure, Holy Blood of Jesus Christ. Those who accept Jesus as their Lord and repent of their sinful past will be washed in His Blood, which will sanctify them forever.

With theistic evolution, what is the point of Jesus' work on the cross? If we all started as goo in a primordial pool, we didn't fall, we leaped. The whole Holy Bible would be a sham. God would have lied to us about our beginnings, which would make him unholy. Which means we can't trust Him. Which means it doesn't matter what we do, because our God is an unstable God.

Listen, folks. We can trust Him. His Word is true and eternal. It's never been disproven and never will be. Listen to what He says in Romans 1:22-25.

"Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. And changed the Glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, and to birds and four footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. WHO CHANGED THE TRUTH OF GOD INTO A LIE, AND WORSHIPPED AND SERVED THE CREATURE MORE THAN THE CREATOR, WHO IS BLESSED FOREVER, AMEN."

This happened back then, when these words were first written, and God knew it would happen again. This time, using the lie of evolution. Apes aren't our ancestors, and no one is sinless. We need a savior. We have one. Jesus, our Lord.
