Book Description
Enormous amounts of money are made and lost through activities related to Mergers, Acquisitions, Demergers, Buyouts and Alliances. It is a major management pre-occupation in many organisations in both the private and public sectors, in almost all parts of the world. Yet there is a vast difference between those organisations who appear to manage these processes successfully and those who do not. As a result there is a particularly critical role for more effective learning. This subject area has been extensively covered by
Long Range Planning and this volume brings together a substantial selection of the key papers published by the Journal on the subject over the past 30 years. This is a volume of articles based on the research, case studies and practical experience of leading authorities that stand the test of time. It is a volume that should be read and digested by anyone concerned with any aspect of this particularly challenging area.
Book Description
Praise for The Art of Constructive Confrontation
"There's no magic formula for building a successful enterprise, large or small. If you're in the business of making a profit, you're in the business of building people. First you build your people. After that, your people produce the profit. The Art of Constructive Confrontation is an easy-to-follow, systematic process that makes sure you don't get those things backwards. Constructive confrontation is the closest thing you'll ever find to hold people accountable for what they do, while at the same time reducing the conflicts that get in the way of productivity and, ultimately, profits."
Spencer Hays, founder, The Tom James Company Executive Chairman, Southwestern/Great American, Inc.
"The Art of Constructive Confrontation is a clear and concise road map to making the all-important conversations between team leaders and team members happen. More than that, the constructive confrontation process keeps those conversations happening, keeps them consistent and constructive, keeps everybody accountable, and unleashes the leadership potential in everyone."
Angelo Valenti, PhD, leader of The Company Psychologist and coauthor, Unleashing Leadership
"Embracing constructive confrontation builds a strong, effective leader with a strong, effective team. This book covers the step-by-step process to make you that kind of leader."
Danny Cox, coauthor, Leadership When the Heat's On
Download Description
A manager's guide to improving efficiency, increasing accountability, and lessening conflict Confrontation is used too often among business leaders as a last resort or a way to express frustration. But using confrontation constructively can actually improve leadership and organizational effectiveness. Constructive confrontation is a structured, systematic, three-step approach that decreases conflict and increases accountability by connecting the dots between what people want and what organizations need. Stressing the importance of well-articulated expectations, detailed follow-up, and recognition of achievement, constructive confrontation improves accountability, clears up misunderstandings about goals, and actually lessens conflict. This book shows every manager how to use constructive confrontation to enhance organizational performance through accountability and action
Customer Reviews:
great book, maybe coud be shorter.......2006-04-01
This is a great book filled with bunch of great tips for leaders. Personally I greatly appreciated the idea of covenant, and the questions to ask people. I took one star off just b/c I felt like the book could have been a bit shorter. Bunch of things were repeated again and again and at some parts some water was just added to the text. But overall, great book!
Compassionate Leadership.......2005-10-24
If only business leaders would do this stuff . . .
As the authors readily admit, the basic concepts forming the foundations of "constructive confrontation" are not particularly new. Communicating, listening, forming concensus, agreeing on courses of action, making course changes, and celebrating progress should be pillars of leadership for any good corporate leader. Yet, for most they aren't.
This book explores just why that is and provides concrete, real-life examples of successful confrontation. The book has an easy to follow format, and non-threatening steps for leaders to take. If the goal is more productivity, less turnover, and a happier work environment, then this is a wonderful place to start.
Confrontation has such a negative connotation, normally, but here it is presented in the most positive light. It is nothing more than the meeting of two (or more) parties, face-to-face, to communicate about common goals, etc. I was really impressed that these activities surely can aid in communication outside the workplace. Try confronting a teenager about goals and expectations, and arriving at a commitment from both parties, with a means to guage results . . . and a means to modify the plan. Know what the consequences are when expectations are not met, and celebrate when they are.
Seriously, follow these steps and guidleines and you can be a great leader, even in your own home.
Good Information.......2005-09-23
The authors have conveyed a simple way to have less conflict with greater accountability. It's a great read for upper as well as middle management. Following the suggestions in the book, also reduces a great deal of stress in the workplace.
This is the Manual for doing business!.......2005-08-19
This book illustrates the way to practicing confrontation (constructively) that forwards projects and gets the job done! My stress level has dropped greatly from using the principles in this book. I wish everyone would read it!
Great, practical advice!.......2005-08-18
I have always thought of confrontation as being something to be avoided because of it's negative connotation. This book showed me how important and positive confrontation can actually be - not only in the workplace but in our personal relationships as well. Great book! All people in leadership positions should take this great advice.

Book Description
A necessity for anyone involved with eyewitness reports.
How often have you worked on an accident investigation and found that eyewitness testimony contradicts the physical evidence found on the scene? What do you do when you have a witness stating that he saw the driver of a white truck passing him at 80 miles per hour, but the physical evidence suggests that the driver was traveling at 50 miles per hour? How can an eyewitness remember seeing a barn on the scene, when in fact there was no barn?
Dr. Robins explains this and much more. Investigators, police officers, insurance adjusters, judges, plaintiffs' attorneys and defense attorneys alike should own this book. It explores, in layman's terms, the fallible aspects of eyewitness testimony. Discover how two witnesses can contradict each other over the same accident scene. Learn how witnesses acquire postevent misinformation. Find out the crucial role that human memory plays. Discover the way juries often evaluate witness testimony on the basis of witness confidence and personality.
Dr. Robins engages you throughout this book by citing case studies, research, and seminar demonstrations that both interest and educate you. If you are an investigator, you will learn what kind of questions to ask your witnesses to get the most information from them. As a defense attorney, you will learn where to undermine the eyewitness testimony against you. As the plaintiff's attorney, you will understand how to avoid the pitfalls of eyewitness evidence.
Dr. Robins raises issues you cannot afford to ignore. By learning from one of the world's experts, you can make eyewitness testimony an asset to your case!
Topics covered:

Short but worthwhile.......2004-02-27
This book is directed towards people who deal with eye witnesses such as police officers, attornies etc. It explains how sensory input is processed and turned into a memory. The book further explains how and why people remember something differently than it actually occurred and why 2 people who saw the same event tell different versions. Over all the content of the book was excellent and it probably cannot be found in any other work. The book is essentially 80 pages long as the rest is filled with appendixes and that is why I rated it 4 stars and not 5.
Book Description
Anyone who has ever thought that volcanoes and volcanism were restricted to the planet Earth should open any page of this book to discover that some of the most spectacular explosions in the Solar System are not occurring close to home. Charles Frankel provides a detailed tour that describes such volcanic landmarks as the Moon's Aristarchus plateau, Mars' tallest volcano Olympus Mons, the double-cratered Sapas Mons on Venus, and the churning lava lake of Io's Pele caldera. Illustrated with the most recent imagery from spacecraft, his volume introduces the reader to the wonders and excitement of space exploration. Charles Frankel has written on various topics in the earth sciences, including the following two of his many books: Volcanoes of the Solar System (Cambridge, 1996) and The End of Dinosaurs (Cambridge, 1999).
Customer Reviews:
a tour of our solar neighbourhood.......2006-11-05
Unlike many other books on volcanism, this text looks at the phenomenon across the entire Solar System. A far broader approach that will appeal to many readers. Of course, the bulk of the discussion is on terrestrial volcanoes, because we have the most data on these. Then, the text talks about lunar volcanoes; all extinct, please note. But the scale gets grander when we venture to Mars. Olympus Mons is utterly massive. Nothing remotely like it on Earth. But Martian volcanoes are also thought to be extinct.
Not so with Venusian and Ionian volcanoes. Especially for the latter, one of whose volcanoes was first seen in profile by a Voyager spacecraft in the 80s, spewing its innards into space.
A glittering tour of our neighbourhood.

Physical Chemistry of Surfaces, 6th Edition
ASIN: 0471330604 |
Book Description
From the reviews of the First Edition: "The book has admirably met its stated goal. The whole gamut of surface and colloid science has been presented in a comprehensive manner without any undue oversimplification. The author should be congratulated for his clarity." -Advanced Materials Now in its second edition, this work remains the single most useful introduction available to the complex area of surface and colloids science. Industry expert Drew Myers walks readers through concepts, theories, and applications-keeping the mathematics to a minimum and presenting real-world case studies to illustrate key technological and biological processes. He substantially reorganizes and updates the material to reflect the current state of knowledge in the field, offering new chapters on absorption and biological systems in addition to the important areas of colloid stability, emulsions and foams, monolayer films, surfactants, and wetting. This revision also boasts an improved index, more than 200 new line drawings, general and specific chapter bibliographies, and end-of-chapter problems. Geared to scientists, technologists, and students dealing with colloidal and surface systems and their numerous industrial applications, the book imparts an understanding of the fundamental aspects of surfaces, interfaces, and colloids, which is essential for effective solutions in diverse areas of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, engineering, and material sciences.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT TEXT.......2007-09-29
I used this book as a supplement to my main text for a graduate level course in colloids and surface physical chemistry. It was by far one of the best texts to use for this area. It makes things easier to understand without all the math in some other texts. Excellent.
A thorough general introduction.......2006-11-10
Surfaces, Interfaces, and Colloids: Principles and Applications, 2nd Edition, by Drew Myers, Wiley-VCH
I have used this book for a course I teach at a technical university on surface and colloid science. The students are typically seniors or beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science. For this group of students, I would like a book which covers the wide scope of this field at an intermediate level, giving the basic theory but with a wealth of applications to demonstrate the utility of this subject in the real world. The book by Myers does not quite satisfy those criteria, but it comes close. Few other books cover such a wide range of topics, from the basic stuff such as chapters on the origin of surface tension to detailed treatments of applications in emulsions, aerosols, friction, and adhesion. I can think of a few other books with such a breadth of treatment - Hunter's "Foundations of Colloid Science" or Adamson and Gast's "Physical Chemistry of Surfaces", but these are somewhat encyclopedic in nature and hard for first time readers to really benefit from. The detail of the treatment is somewhat light on the mathematical side, as compared perhaps to Hiemenz and Rajagopalan`s text. But the latter book has been judged too mathematically challenging by the students of my classes - a view I don't really share. What I like best about Meyer's book is the effectiveness, at least in my view, with which it gets all of the important ideas across. Though short on equations, the author uses careful explanations and helpful diagrams to cover the area in a very detailed way. Many topics explained, such as the dynamics of wetting and competitive wetting, are not even mentioned in higher level textbooks. And the explanations are complete, not abbreviated or simplified, and with may practical examples illustrating the concepts. The one complaint I hear the most from students is that the text doesn't give much help with solving the homework problems which the author has placed at the ends of each chapter. To be fair, this complaint really only applies to the more difficult of the problems, which account for roughly half of them. But the students are correct in that these problems sometimes do not provided needed data (it is often not even in the book) and often call for a level of analysis which is above the level of the relevant chapter. A few worked examples, especially in Chapters 4-10 where the basic material is presented, would have been very helpful. While this shortcoming may be a detriment towards self-study, I feel that the breadth of coverage and effectiveness of the explanations makes this a good book to have on your shelf for the next time you need to brush up on your colloid and surface science.
Great introductory text.......2004-01-16
My Ph.D. research involves surface and interface science, so I read a lot of texts in this topic area. This book is one of the best introductory texts I have seen to surface and interface science. It is geared towards the undergraduate student in science and engineering who has little knowledge of quantum, solid state, or thermodynamics. The text flows cleanly with lots of simple pictures and diagrams to illustrate ideas. Important equations are included, but the amount of math is kept to a minimum. All the key ideas in surface science are mentioned, such as adhesion, tribology, wetting, oxidation, catalysis, etc. There is adequate mention of applications, technologies, and how they are related together. The book is organized such that each chapter covers a specific topic, and they can be read independently of each other, making it a great reference. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about surface or interface science.

Book Description
Animal Evolution is a complete analysis of the evolutionary interrelationships and myriad diversity of the animal kingdom. Using modern phylogenetic reasoning based on characters from an extensive review of morphology, including ultrastructure, and embryology, each phylum is analysed to ascertain its monophyly and hence its ancestral characters. These ancestral characters are then used to construct a complete phylogenetic tree of the extant animal phyla. This new edition of Animal Evolution brings the subject fully up to date including some new ideas and emphases, as well as new bibliographic data. It also includes new chapters on the use of computer programmes and on the use of the new molecular techniques to create phylogenies, both techniques that have grown in prevalence in the field since the first edition was published. Illustrated throughout with finely detailed line drawings and clear diagrams. From reviews of the first edition of Animal Evolution: 'A clear and engaging style exemplified by a series of superbly concise descriptions of the phyla.... These are complemented by excellent illustrations.... The volume belongs on every biologist's bookshelf.' Simon Conway- Morris, Nature 'Texts like these constitute the very cream of taxonomic literature.... It really is a joy to read... and in my opinion it constitutes a highly recommended book for all zoologists. I think it is also particularly suited for seminars on animal classification for both undergraduate and graduate students.' JC von Vaupel Klein, Crustaceana 'I highly recommend this book as a fascinating theory of animal relationships, and an excellent summary of the phylogenetically informative aspects of the biology of the whole animal kingdom.' Maximilian J Telford, Systematic Entomology
Customer Reviews:
A little outdated.......2006-09-04
I bought this book when it first came out and quite enjoyed it. However Dr. Nielsen is not in the mainstream- he tends to reject most molecular data and bases his analysis on more traditional morphologic analysis, much of which is no longer accepted as being correct. I do not know his 2006 opinions, but as late as 2003 i think he was still arguing against the movement to ecdysozoa and lophotrochozoa. So if you want to know what the majority of biologists think- i would suggest james valentines book (on the origin of phyla) which is fairly close to the modern thoughts and i think easier reading with very good background info- or for a shorter version- just search the web for Halanych "the new view of animal phylogeny"- that article can be found in its entirety in pdf- but is not a book that gives background info- you have to have basic phyletic knowledge to understand it. Also keep in mind that whatever you read will be a bit out of date- 2006 data that seems to be fairly well accepted puts the urochordates closer to craniata(vertebrata) than cephalochordates and is not in any summary that i can find (not even wikipedia) and there is compelling evidence from mitochondrial DNA that argues that placazoa is basal to porifera.
More Taxonomy Than Evolution.......2006-06-12
I thought this book was a brilliant exposition about the taxonomy of the phyla but it gave one little feel for the evolutionary history of animals. By cutting much of the discussion at the level of the phyla, a lot that I was hoping to learn something about was completely missing. In addition I thought it odd that tardigrades and even more obscure phyla had as much discussion as vertebrates. The chapter on nucleic acid sequencing seemed disorganized with it difficult to follow why some trees were more relevant than others. The time lines of the processes were hardly mentioned.
Overall I thought it read like a taxonomy lecturer's notes. I suppose these are hard words for what is so obviously expert's comprehesive work. However popular synthesizers like Sagan or Gould never wrote a book like this. So it would seem if you what to know structural details, taxonomy, embryology, this is the great book, but I wanted the big picture with organizing themes, and came away a bit disappointed.
Not based on fact though.......2004-05-25
It's interesting how the imagination of this author of all the branchings of the animal kingdom can be taken seriously. Where's the beef though as far as physical proof? It's all based upon his imagination of what MAY be. Just because big words are used doesn't make it so. The evolutionists STILL have no physical proof of how a whale used to be cow used to be a whale, or whatever their ridiculous theory is to explain away one of God's beautiful sea mammals.
Also, if the earth was as old as the evolutionists say it is, the sun would have engulfed the earth due to the size the sun would have been that many billions of years ago. Also, the moon would have practically been scraping the earth. Our DNA is millions of times more complicated than the code contained in Windows software. Does anyone really believe mathematically it's possible for our DNA, much less ALL DNA, to have evolved over the supposed billions of years they claim the earth has been around? Time doesn't equal order. All of the different species of living things are much much too beautiful and complicated to have just luckily evolved. It's absurd. It's complete junk science.
I'm sorry evolutionists. Even me being a lay person can easily explain away your lies and deceit. There are hundreds and hundreds more examples I could give to destroy your myth which entire purpose is to try to explain that a God doesn't exist. I pray that God has mercy on your souls for perpetuating this horribly destuctive myth that a 5 year old can see through. It's so hilarious because the only physical proof the evolutionists can provide is some artists' rendition of how things MAY have evolved. Anyone can go down to their local museum of natural history and ask the curator to show some physical proof of ANY plant or animal evloving from one state to another. They'll have nothing to show you. All they can show is the micro-evolution that is programmed into our genes that allows for adaption in a minimal way, ie, breeding of dogs, etc etc. But they can't show any linkage from pond scum to human, pond scum to lion, pond scum to flower, etc.
If anyone wants the real truth about this subject, I suggest reading a book by James Perloff entitled "Tornado In A Junkyard".
Brilliant.......2001-08-31
I really enjoyed reading this book because it is detailed and up to date.
Clear, well done presentation of the latest information........1996-08-05
This book is an excellent presentation of one expert's
interpretation of the current known facts of morphologic
animal cladistics. He has studied the subject of the
relationships of the animal phyla and synthesized his
understanding into an interesting and well written book.
He presents some knew and potentially controversial
branchings of the evolutionary tree of the animals.
The only negative is that the book can be technical and
dense with facts at times. This should not inhibit the
interested reader from buying this book.

Book Description
Quantum information science is a new field of science and technology which requires the collaboration of researchers coming from different fields of physics, mathematics, and engineering: both theoretical and applied.
Quantum Computing and Quantum Bits in Mesoscopic Systems addresses fundamental aspects of quantum physics, enhancing the connection between the quantum behavior of macroscopic systems and information theory. In addition to theoretical quantum physics, the book comprehensively explores practical implementation of quantum computing and information processing devices.
On the experimental side, this book reports on recent and previous observations of quantum behavior in several physical systems, coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum dots, superconducting quantum interference devices, Cooper pair boxes, and electron pumps in the context of the Josephson effect. In these systems, the book discusses all required steps, from fabrication through characterization to the final basic implementation for quantum computing.

Well who would have guessed?.......2000-03-27
This book has some of the funniest stories, by some of the most unexpected people. We all know Bob Dylan for his powerful songwritting, but in this title we discover his talent for razor sharp prose. Likewise Salvador Dali known worldwide for his surreal paintings, delivers a children's story that borders on profane. This book twists and turns and is full of funny stories and chocked full of surprises.
