Book Description
The volume collects a selection of papers of the 21st EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling. The papers in this book provide a representative, though not complete, sample of the current scientific activity in the field of quantitative finance. Such activity is not only theoretical but also practical, because it tries to combine theoretic analyses with empirical evidence.
The topics deal with corporate finance, asset price analysis, portfolio management, decision theory, international exchange markets and financial derivatives. It is important to note the presence of algorithms, methods and models, helpful in the real activities of a decision maker such as performance evaluations and scenarios identifications in portfolio models, how to measure bank efficiency, and how to realize an efficient diversification of international investments.
Book Description
Competitive Advantage Through People explores why--despite long-standing evidence that a committed work force is essential for success--firms continue to attach little importance to their workers. The answer, argues Pfeffer, resides in a complex web of factors based on perception, history, legislation, and practice that continues to dominate management thought and action. Yet, some organizations have been able to overcome these obstacles. In fact, the five common stocks with the highest returns between 1972 and 1992--Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods, Circuit City, and Plenum Publishing--were in industries that shared virtually none of the characteristics traditionally associated with strategic success. What each of these firms did share is the ability to produce sustainable competitive advantage through its way of managing people. Pfeffer documents how they--and others--resisted traditional management pitfalls, and offers frameworks for implementing these changes in any industry.

Great Concepts for us to take in.......2001-07-26
I have often read and reread Prof. Pfeffer's books. I give this one 3-stars because I found less than half the book of value. I find the examples quite colorful, interesting, and thought provoking. It's just too bad that the book didn't have a lot of value for the money (unlike his other books). I read this book the last time about 2 years ago, each time I pick it up I read less and less. The first time I read it, I read 5 chapters and now I'm down to 2. I wish I could say that it's because I see many of the concepts being implemented within corporate America and as such I have less need for the information.
Pfeffer gives excellent arguments!.......1998-11-02
Competive advantage through people is a great management book for the turn of the century. With a load of great ideas and innovative techniques, Pfeffer gets his message across. Although, one thing that I had notice when reading the book, is that Pfeffer repeats himself quite a lot. I feel that for a book aimed at the business world, management does not have time to read information twice. But, overall, it was a very interesting and enlighting book.
The author documents numerous Southern companies.......1998-06-12
The Stanford professor's most recent book, Managing With Power, sold very well. Among the companies he documents here are Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods, Circuit City, and Plenum Publishing.
Are there diamonds in here somewhere?.......1997-12-09
Throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, American businesses have struggled to gain an international advantage through financial policies, improved efficiencies, and aggressive marketing to develop new and more prosperous markets. Despite these efforts, many American corporations are no longer the dominant force in the global economy they were in the late fifties and early sixties. In his book Competitive Advantage Through People: Unleashing the Power of the Work Force (Harvard Business School Press, 252 pages), author Jeffrey Pfeffer offers one possible explanation for America's decreased dominance in the global economy and suggests how to maximize our most valuable asset in order to reverse this trend. Mr. Pfeffer makes several cogent arguments backed up by real world examples to convince the reader of the importance of treating workers as partners in order to achieve success. By using several real world examples to prove his points, Pfeffer clearly details the benefits of implementi
Business' must change the way it views its workforce.......1997-12-02
Jeffery Pffefer's Competitive Advantage through People is a timely statement which examines the elements that make business organizations successful, as well as theories why most firms continue to measure their work forces as "costs" rather than "investments." Pfeffer provides excellent empiracal examples of firms who have attached value to their workers through the commitment of their managers. He does contradict his own theory of leadership irrelevance in which he states that the responsibility for fixing the firm's problems lie with management. In addition, his discussion of organized labor as contributing to work place efficiency serves as a subjective endorsement in support of unions.
Pfeffer makes good arguments against Frederick Taylor's principles of scientific management and declares that the Tayloristic ideology would have today's workers functioning as mindless robots waiting on their next instructions to come from management. He also discusses sixteen practices that successful managers and firms use in achieving competitive advantages through their workforces. Pfeffer's passion for firms to change their behaviors is strong and readers view his work as communicating the necessary message: bad business theories communicated by poor managers using the wrong language leads to further dissatisfaction and inefficiency within the U.S. workforce.
Book Description
It is no secret that people make the difference. In this bold examination of what really catapults a firm to the top, Pfeffer explores why-despite financial results to the contrary-companies continue to attach secondary importance to their people. This book shows how companies of all sizes and in all industries can dramatically improve performance by redefining relationships with workers.

A comprehensive system of criminal law which, while not adopted in the United States, is still influential today because it is the first complete penal code built on Jeremy Bentham's principles of codification. Hicks marvels at the scope of this code and notes that Bentham, Hugo, Lafayette, Story, Marshall, Madison, Kent and Jefferson were compelled by "the most comprehensive and enlightened system of criminal law that has ever been presented to the world." Smith. Columbia Law Review 2:32. Hicks 180. From a penal standpoint the code is important as well not only in terms of its completeness and order, but from its perspective of the advancement of crime prevention over punishment. Livingston [1764-1836] was a senator from Louisiana and later a member of Andrew Jackson's cabinet. Dictionary of American Biography VI: 309-12.
Book Description
Beyond a reasonable doubt. The phrase represents the burden of proof placed upon the prosecution in every criminal trial in the country, and yet the standard represented by this phrase is nowhere mentioned in the constitution and nowhere in our laws is it defined. What then does it really mean? How can it be interpreted? In Beyond a Reasonable Doubt over 80 of the most influential scholars, attorneys, novelists, journalists, and religious figures discuss, explore, interpret, and define the phrase and its meaning. Destined to be one of the most talked-about books of the year, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt is essential reading for anyone with an interest in how our justice system works today and how it will work in the future.
Customer Reviews:
A great read while traveling. .......2007-06-09
You can pick up this book and start reading at the beginning, middle or end. Whether you read it for five minutes or five hours it's enjoyable and provides valuable insights.
Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, has many authors. They range from the famous to the infamous. From high-profile attorneys to everyday hoodlums. Together, they provide a fascinating compendium of what is required to prove a defendant guilty before a jury. A brief biography of each author is presented along with their opinion. Some positions reflect on years of careful thought and introspection. Other opinions are shot from the hip.
The book deals with the criminal and the civil justice systems. A good case is made that the civil system is arbitrary because right and wrong have lost their meaning. Examples are provided for medical malpractice, business ethics and contracts. The state of the criminal justice system is more ambiguous. Strong arguments are made for both the equity and inequity of criminal justice.
All of the information provided is valuable to anyone who may be called to jury duty. Selected information can be used to bolster just about any bias one may have regarding our justice system. The range of authors and the fact that they are kept to just a few hundred words, make for entertaining reading.
Beyond a Reasonable Doubt:Letteers and Essays from the famous and Infamous on the True and Legal Definition of Guilt in American.......2007-01-19
Excellent, interesting and informative reading. Most of these essays/chapters are very thought provoking.
An interesting book about standards of innocence and guilt.......2007-01-05
This book deals with a number of topics and has 85 contributors. An important topic is jury nullification. This is the case where a jury decides, quite legally, to let a guilty person go free. A jury can also intentionally convict an innocent person, but that can often be appealed. I'm against jury nullification. Many years ago, some students were unhappy about the fact that secret (and highly inaccurate) files were being kept on them by their university. They protested, but they could get nowhere because the existence of these files was denied! Finally, some of them broke into a dean's office, restrained the dean (that's a crime; it's called "kidnapping"), opened his file cabinet, and removed the secret files (that's also a crime).
Although the criminals accomplished something positive by their crimes, I felt the criminals needed to be punished in accordance with the law. They weren't, and as a result, numerous destructive "copycat" crimes followed which did no one any good.
Of course, in this country, jury nullification has an even more annoying aspect. In the case that I cited, the issue of "reasonable doubt" did not come up. But sometimes it does, such as in the OJ Simpson case. Here, "reasonable doubt" was used as an excuse for jury nullification. That makes me wonder about the entire idea of using juries as determiners of fact. I think if we want to allow a jury to let a guilty person go free, we should first make sure the accused is actually guilty! And that means letting some folks other than the nullifiers determine the facts.
In this book, Philip Howard points out that the role of a jury is to inform the Court of the facts. Of course, he's right. And he is discussing the contrast with the role of the judge, which is to answer questions of law. But my point is that we won't have a justice system at all unless questions of fact are resolved, and that jury nullification forces us to skip this step. I was hoping to see more comments on this point in the book.
Howard did at least make the point that we need to stop juries from making whimsical decisions on matters of law as well.
The first section of the book deals with the concept of "reasonable doubt" specifically. Next is a section on "equal justice." And after that, there's a section called "quest for truth." There's plenty of interesting material here. But I wanted to see far more on ideas to get truth to play a much bigger role in our legal system. After all, without truth, there can't be justice! Some of the contributors did not mind the fact that OJ Simpson got away with murder, reasoning that a system that would convict him would also convict some innocent people. I think those contributors are totally wrong. OJ Simpson went free because the system was no good; I think such a bad system will generally convict more, not fewer, innocent people.
There is also a section on the media and the justice system. And there's a section on protecting victims. Following that is a section called "punishment in America."
The penultimate section deals with some rather serious crimes, such as the Armenian genocide and Serbian crimes against Bosnia. Again, I want to see more emphasis on truth here. For example, although I see a need for justice in such crimes, I am strongly against any international criminal tribunals. I believe such tribunals tend to degenerate into kangaroo courts that ignore the guilty while trying and punishing the innocent. If there were more value placed on truth, along with some checks and balances to prevent such perversions of justice, I would be less leery of such courts.
I enjoyed this book even though I strongly disagreed with a great deal of what the contributors had to say. It addresses a wide range of important issues. But it should have given more advice on how to make truth a more important aspect of legal decisions, and I'm deducting a star for that.

Book Description
The diminutive size of cometary bodies is in no way proportional to their scientific importance. Theorists suggest that comets played a major role in the development of the Earth and subsequent collosions of comets may have wiped out various life forms, allowing only the most adaptable to develop further. In short, the study of comets is important from a historical perspective, scientifically compelling and, at the same time, entertaining. In this authoritative book, the development of cometary ideas is traced from antiquity through the actual fly-by of Halley by international spacecraft in 1986. The focus is on the cometary theories that were evident in each era. Included are many colorful anecdotes and information about culture and important personalities throughout history. Also contains an exhaustive catalog of all comet apparitions through the year 1700.

Comets.......2006-01-03
Comets where first discovered way back in the time of such scientific scholars like Aristotle and Ptolemy. The book Comets was written by Donald K. Yeomans. In the book he tells you the history on comets and how they have been and are being discovered in space. He also describes the different views of the scientists of the time on comets. An example of a wacky thought of comets was by Aristotle as he thought that comets had something to do with meteorology.
The author also describes how comets impacted societies and time periods. Suck as how Newton viewed the comets of 1607,1618,1652,1664 and 1665. He tied this info into his theory of a heliocentric universe. This book tells you facts on comets also like how Halley's Comet returns roughly about every 70 years. I didn't really enjoy this book because of the fact I am not a big reader and it is basically a book of facts. The book on comets is really a giant fact book compiled for studies. I would recommend this book if you where going to do any type of project or paper on comets but I would not recommend it for the casual reader.

Book Description
Looking for the first time at the cut-price anatomy schools rather than genteel Oxbridge, Desmond winkles out pre-Darwinian evolutionary ideas in reform-minded and politically charged early nineteenth-century London. In the process, he reveals the underside of London intellectual and social life in the generation before Darwin as it has never been seen before.
"The Politics of Evolution is intellectual dynamite, and certainly one of the most important books in the history of science published during the past decade."—Jim Secord, Times Literary Supplement
"One of those rare books that not only stakes out new territory but demands a radical overhaul of conventional wisdom."—John Hedley Brooke, Times Higher Education Supplement
Customer Reviews:
An evolution of politics: difficulties on theory.......2002-03-20
This is an excellent series of snapshots of the generation of Darwin's youth before 1859, with its gestating theories of evolution, development, transformism, and embryology. In this generation after Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin, we find a host of perspectives, from the Geoffrey-Cuvier debate, the Vestiges, to the many figures such as Grant, who influenced Darwin. We also see the context of the radical era of the anti-Malthusian revolutionary 'evolutionists' in the collision of the Reform Bill, and the conservative polarization of the Whigs and Tory reaction. It is a confusing picture, yet one that is essential to grasping the subtly clever and nonetheless ideological cast to Darwin's tactics of silence and delay, until the moment was ripe, prodded by Wallace, to put forth his conservatized version of evolutionary theory.
The great irony here, and the left-leaning Darwin Industry seems to suffer incorrect focus on this point, is that the basis of Darwin's thinking was no more solid scientfically, as to natural selection, than were the views of those in the penny rags preaching cooperation, equality, and radical change in the name of evolution. The endemic confusions of organismic versus cultural evolution, evolution and revolution, and the relation of free action in relation to past, present and future emergence are shared equally by all parties. And the Malthusian basis of Darwin's theory is as open to challenge today as it was in the era of the penny papers of the radicals in the 1830's. The relations of economy and evolution are so transparent, and so connected to the strain of the Whigs, including Darwin, that one must smile to see the merry-go-round turn again in this direction in the era of the genome, and resurgent developmental biology. Will our erstwhile left, now quite conditioned to Darwin's Whiggery, grasp the strangeness of their position, and step off this theoretical illusion?
This is an excellent book in many respects, and especially helpful for seeing the nature of Darwin's development in the thicket of the explosive cultural politics of his time.
A revision of the history of evolutionism prior to Darwin........1999-05-21
Desmond's Politics of Evolution is not what the title may suggest--a study of the politics of Darwinism and its uses for rightwing ideology, or a study of the implications of evolution for a formerly theocratic world. Rather, the book details the RADICAL social and political implications of earlier evolutionary, anatomcial other life science theory as held and promoted by medical scientists and professors in London and Edinburgh, prior to Darwin, thus allowing for a reconsideration of the meaning of later naturalism in light of the political valences of its materialist progenitors. We can thus see Darwinism and the new naturalism as an accomodation and "domestication" of the earlier evolutionism.
