With the persistent instability of international financial markets, emerging economies are exploring new ways to reduce exposure to capital flow volatility. Some analysts argue that financially open economies are best served by more flexible regimes, while others argue in favor of extreme exchange rate regimes that have a strong commitment to a fixed parity or dispense with an independent currency. The successful launch of the euro has made more realistic the prospect of replacing a national currency with a strong foreign one. Recent examples include the adoption of the US dollar by Ecuador and El Salvador.

The introduction of a foreign currency as sole legal tender, termed full (de jure) dollarization, has been the center of much political and academic debate. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The topics discussed include the role of balance sheet effects, the linkage between currency risk and country risk, the impact of dollarization on trade, financial integration and credibility, the implications of dollarization for the lender of last resort, and the institutional and political economy aspects of dollarization.

As opposed to most of the literature on the topic (de jure/formal/full dollarization Salvadorean style; NOT de facto financial dollarization that characterizes many developing countries), this volume succeeds in presenting a balanced compendium of papers that summarizes the main issues, informing the reader without trying to sell a particular option. The Primer is particularly helpful for dollarization curious policy makers and economist without an emerging market orientation. While briefing on the contents of the different chapters of the volume, it tackles a number of diverse and related topics, ranging from old-style optimum currency area criteria to modern-style developing-coutries-cannot-manage-their-own-currency type of arguments (the so called monetary credibility argument), to non-economical political considerations, always avoiding easy simplifications of generalizations. For that reason, it may read as a little derivative sometimes, but a second reading and a long reference list provides a fairly comprehensive unbiased introduction that is difficult to find elsewhere. For those whose want more, the chapters elaborate on particular themes discussed in the introductory primer. The language is as diverse as the authors of the papers, going from an analytical presentation of the credibility-flexibility tradeoff by Chang and Velasco to a down-to-earth step by step guide for a prospective dollarizer by Gruber and co-authors, to a descriptive account of the political aspects by Frieden. All in all, a nice introduction for the lay and an up to date reference book for the initiated. (True, papers can be downloaded, some even in the final version, from the Internet. But this happens to be the rule rather than the exception in these days. At least, MIT Press has done an unexpectedly creative job with the cover.)

A must read for all of HRD!.......1999-02-04

For years, we in HRD have been poor at delivering results to the organization on time and under budget. I never could understand the books on project management. They always used way more project management effort than I needed. The examples never made sense either. This book has to be the best resource ever given to the HRD community. The tools are simple and easy to use. I found that I could scale the project managment efforts to match the need. The examples are great and really bring home the point. The ongoing case story of Bill and Karen are fun. I found myself reading ahead just to find out what they did, and how their stories turned out.

This has to be one of the best business books ever written. I found that I was able to take the practices and put them to work right away. My manager can't believe the difference it's made in my ability to get project results. I highly recommend this book to any manager or project manager.

Addressing students and researchers as well as CFD practitioners, this book describes the state of the art in the development of high-resolution schemes based on the Flux-Corrected Transport (FCT) paradigm. Intended for readers who have a solid background in computational fluid dynamics, the book begins with historical notes by J.P. Boris and D.L. Book. Review articles that follow describe recent advances in the design of FCT algorithms as well as various algorithmic aspects. The topics addressed in the book and its main highlights include: the derivation and analysis of classical FCT schemes, with special emphasis on the underlying physical and mathematical constraints; flux limiting for hyperbolic systems; generalization of FCT to implicit time-stepping and finite element discretizations on unstructured meshes and its role as a subgrid scale model for Monotonically Integrated Large Eddy Simulation (MILES) of turbulent flows. The proposed enhancements of the FCT methodology also comprise the prelimiting and 'failsafe' adjustment of antidiffusive fluxes, the use of characteristic variables, and iterative flux correction. The Feynman path integrals are becoming increasingly important in the applications of quantum mechanics and field theory. The path integral formulation of quantum anomalies, i.e. the quantum breaking of certain symmetries, can now cover all the known quantum anomalies in a coherent manner. In this book the authors provide an introduction to the path integral method in quantum field theory and its applications to the analyses of quantum anomalies. No previous knowledge of field theory beyond the advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed. The book provides the first coherent introductory treatment of the path integral formulation of chiral and Weyl anomalies, with applications to gauge theory in two and four dimensions, conformal field theory and string theory. Explicit and elementary path integral calculations of most of the quantum anomalies covered are given. The conceptual basis of the path integral bosonization in two-dimensional theory, which may have applications to condensed matter theory, for example, is clarified. The book also covers the recent interesting developments in the treatment of fermions and chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.

I should have put this book down when my gut told my so, but went ahead anyway and it took me forever to struggle through it. It made very little sense and is very contradictory and most confusing! I suppose it makes sense to some, but I really tried and came up with straws.
