    Book Description

Corporations must decide how much to invest in the natural capital (e.g. air, water, land, and forests) that they depend upon for their economic survival. How do they project the costs of essential investments under conditions of scientific and legislative uncertainty? An innovative roadmap is laid out with the help of a case study based on the actual experiences of a forestry company that made such an attempt. Everyone interested in developing a long-range environmental strategy will find this book instructive: senior corporate management, accountants, internal auditors, academics, students, and environmentalists. Based on the author's research for the United Nations, a new methodology is advanced to compute fuller costs. In addition to practical guidance on the theory and practice of calculating fuller costs, the author illustrates alternatives to traditional capital budgeting models. A whole range of concepts and applications are offered on natural capital; intergenerational equity; waste minimization; asset depletion rates; application of risk-management principles to costing natural capital; off-balance sheet natural assets; modern definition of profit for natural and business capital. Pioneering reporting methods for returns on investment and product costs are recommended in the concluding chapters.

            Book Description

What can trainers learn from "Sesame Street"? Apparently quite a lot. Like how to make trainees turn on--not tune out--to learning by injecting training sessions with energy and excitement.

TRAINERS IN MOTION is a lively new book that offers a training approach inspired by the success of "Sesame Street" and other children's educational programming. Centered around the idea of "edutainment" (which says people learn better by doing), this book emphasizes interactive learning and shows readers how to:

            * Apply the principles of edutainment to workshops for adults * Create a stimulating learning environment * Engage the imagination and creative side of trainees * Make the training experience more exciting, involving, and productive for both learner and trainer.

Perhaps best of all, the training techniques in TRAINERS IN MOTION work in any training environment, with any topic, and with any type of person.

            5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-02-26

Jim Vidakovich's Trainers in Motion is published in a binder with dividers, so you can add your own notes and comments. This reader participation workbook parallels Vidakovich's approach to involving participants in their own training. Vidakovich begins with an initial discussion of his approach, but the majority of the book is very hands-on, with descriptions of exercises, illustrations of room arrangements, lists of suggested approaches and questions for you to answer. This notebook is packed with good ideas from an expert on training. The caveat:...it's a little pricey. Nonetheless, we from getAbstract recommend it with confidence to trainers and workshop leaders. If hands-on is your style, you have a very well-informed friend in Jim Vidakovich.

5 out of 5 stars AMA Senior Course Leader.......2001-01-05

I have participated in Jim's Accelerated Learning Course, where he taught us many of the ideas & exercises delineated in this book. All of us in the Course felt it was invaluable, and we were all "seasoned" professional trainers and consultants. His book is an excellent extension of his professionalism, enthusiasm, and superior training techniques. I can't recommend it highly enough. As a Trainer, I'm supposed to be professional ... this book has helped me be even better.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2000-12-19

Although the price may deter some buyers, if you are doing any professional training, this book is a must-have. I unconditionally recommend it. There are many other books on conducting workshops (see my other reviews) but a lot of them are either; 1. Too academic on the subject of adult learning (beware of the use of the word 'andragogy'), or 2. Too consumed with team/individual game playing.

Trainers in Motion is my "bible" for conducting professional workshops. Vidakovich goes so far as to distinguish those activities that are appropriate for small groups versus large groups, and how to adapt your approach if the group dynamics change (which they will).

The real beauty of the book is the adaptability of it to almost any subject. I have taught workshops on Leadership, Team Building, Project Management, Sales and Marketing, Creativity, and other subjects, and one standard I have followed is the approach of this book towards generating participation and excitement.

The 3-ring binding of the book is also a benefit, as I have been able to take some of the pages along with me, when needed, as opposed to the entire book.

            Use it well!

5 out of 5 stars Trainers in Motion.......2000-10-04

I must say that Mr. Vidakovich's book is an essential tool for today's training environment. "Trainers in Motion" has set a new standard in adult learning in the 21st century. We all can learn to utilize this style not only in our academic environment, but also in our everyday interpersonal relations.

If you are in the training field, this is a must see manuel to guide you to an enhanced training environment that not only will your participants enjoy, but you will also have fun in the process.

Enjoy, Jeff Stavitzski Corporate Trainer (Levitz)

Trainers in Motion is a necessity for anyone who is in the training industry. It has become my primary resource for techniques to deliver content that is retained and used. The end result: the participants are enthusiastic about the information they receive and even better they are using this information to enhance the jobs they do for our company. We all WIN!

                Book Description

In 1801, a young mathematician stunned the scientific world by using the modest mathematical tools of algebra and trigonometry to solve the complex problem of calculating planetary orbits. He explains his methods in this volume, which is suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students and remains a vital reference in modern astronomical computation and celestial mechanics.

                5 out of 5 stars Important work.......2007-05-19

This very technical and archaic book is a rather strange book to keep in print. Its entire purpose is the determination of the orbits of heavenly bodies on the basis of limited observations. This was prompted by the discovery of Ceres, which was sighted briefly in 1801 and then lost. For the regular planets one of course has enormous amounts of observational data for determining the orbit, but we are now facing a new problem: to determine the orbit from only a few observations. By Kepler's laws we know that the orbit will be an ellipse and once we know the ellipse we know its orbital period (by the harmonic law, R^2 proportional to period^3). Therefore, to know the position of Ceres at all future times we need to determine the ellipse and the position of Ceres at one given time. A conic has five degrees of freedom (Ax^2+Bxy+Cy^2+Dx+Ey+1=0) and the position at a given time gives one additional degree of freedom, so we should need 6 pieces of data to determine the future positions of Ceres. Each observation gives 2 data (coordinates on celestial sphere), so three observations should be enough to solve the problem and indeed Gauss provides such a solution. To get the most out of the data, Gauss uses the method of least squares and makes careful error estimates and so on. Towards the end of the book Gauss addresses the issue of perturbations. Gauss's prediction of the position of Ceres was a stunning success, but his method does not work as well for Pallas, discovered in 1802, since its orbit cannot be taken to be a perfect ellipse because it is too heavily perturbed by Jupiter and other planets.

The lovely Lady is missing! She's been spotted three times. And the hero, the best and brightest of young Men, goes looking for Her! There is no time to lose. Will she be found by New Year's Day? What an adventure story!

Well, actually, this is a book about mathematics and celestial mechanics. And it isn't exactly new: it was written in 1809.

But this isn't just a history book. Nor is it nearly impossible to read, like Newton's Principia. This is the exciting tale, in great mathematical detail, of the techniques that enabled Gauss to find Ceres. And how the same methods can be used to find Juno and Pallas given three observations of them, or Vesta given two complete and two incomplete observations.

For those who don't know this, Ceres was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi, a 40-year old mathematics professor, on January 1, 1801. Piazzi observed Ceres twenty more times, the final time on February 11. After that, Ceres was lost. In the September, 1801 issue of the Monatliche Correspondenz, Piazzi published his entire set of observations of Ceres. Karl Gauss, then 24 years old, took only a few weeks to predict the path of Ceres, in surprisingly good agreement with modern values. He sent his results to Franz von Zach, the editor of the Monatliche Correspondenz. On December 31, 1801, von Zach unambiguously confirmed the recovery of Ceres.

This book has not aged well, of course. Gauss, one of the greatest mathematicians ever, was forced to do his calculations without the aid of modern computers. And so we see plenty of mathematical tricks that we can all appreciate, but for the most part are unnecessary today (and we can be glad that we rarely need to employ them ourselves).

Still, if you want to understand orbital mechanics, this is a remarkably good book to read. It is surprisingly easy to follow all the math, and once you've read it, you'll be able to solve plenty of orbital mechanics problems.

And if you ever want to solve some really tough problems in orbital mechanics, Gauss is a great teacher. You'll gain valuable insight about what approximations are available and when to make them.

Digging Dinosaurs written by John R. Horner et.al. is a book that covers the search that unraveled the mystery of baby dinosaurs. Honer has dedication, insight, and a sharp eye, but good luck is always nice to have when searching for the past in Western Montana on the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

At the time of writing this book Horner had spent six years digging at Egg Mountain and the surrounding area. His finds are rocking the knowledge base for nestings, babies and herd research.Whether you like to read about dinosaurs or are a dinosaur buff, reding this book gives you an appreciation for being a paleontologist. Also, you get to read about and see how they reexamine their venerable theeories.

The remarkable discoveries found in this book are interesting and they are advancing new hypotheses about dinosaur behavior and ecology... also, how did dinosaurs interact between species is new ground covered within these pages. Clever detective work while uncovering the past bodes well for future knowledge obtained.

Some of that knowledge coming from this large find of dinosaur remains is that duckbills probably moved like birds, with their heads bobbing forward and back. They did not look like the dinosaurs that have their tails dragging on the ground; the tails of most dinosaurs, not only duckbilld but also the sauropods, were held out straight behind them. The duckbills' tails were reinforced by rigid, ossified tendons that we can still see in many fossil skeletons.

Bipedal dinosaurs were built the same way, when a duckbill walked it bobbed its neck to get a fluid gait. Duckbills lived in herds and one of their major defenses against predators was their running ability, herding instinct, and a solid kick with the hind legs.

Reading this book was a delight as the narrative was engrossing and kept my interest. Horner has a easy-going style that will captivate the reader and the next thing you know you've reached the end and you what to know more about these denizens of the past. An interesting book that questions conventional interpretations, making for an enjoyable, educational read.

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaur egg hunt.......1999-03-06

Digging Dinosaurs, by John Horner, is a firsthand account of the discovery of fossilized Dinosaur eggs that led to extensive discoveries of nesting sites in Montana. The book describes the geology of the area, the discovery of the nesting sites, their excavation, and the changes in paleontology that ensued. The book was made all the more fascinating by the fact that you can visit the actual site, called egg mountain. The Museum of the Rockies, in Choteau, Montana sponsors tours. On a recent trip to Montana, my wife and I took the tour and met John Horner, digging up more dinosaurs.

I enjoyed Digging Dinosuars. John Horner's enthusiasm for the subject is easily apparent. The book is not overly technical, (although a basic understanding of geology/paleontology helps in fully understanding Horner's theories.) and has a very casual tone. The theories presented are full of clever and logical interpretations of the fossils found. While Horner also gives descriptions of things beyond factual support, he identifies which is imagination, and what is supported. The biggest flaw is the book's orginization. Horner seemed to be attempting to explain everything at once, changing topics for every paragraph. But beyond that, I enjoyed Digging Dinosaurs.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse into the real world of paleontology........1998-12-03

"Digging Dinosaurs" is far more than the continueing search for traces of these vanished beasts. It is a glimpse into the mind and lives of the people who have dedicated their lives to understanding this fascinating topic. Co-authored by Jack Horner, probably the most influential paleontologist alive today, the book reads at times more like a novel than a scholarly research. Fast paced, often humerous, this is a great read for anyone interested in our world's far ancient past.

Digging Dinosaurs really gave a clear and interesting spin on the work that goes behind finding fossils. I loved it!

                                            Book Description

A compendium of novel information on molecular-scale science and the application of nanocarbon, nanosilicon and biopolymer integrated nanosystems. During the 20th century, molecular-scale science and nanotechnology developed rapidly, leading to the construction of innovative materials - nanosystens from molecules (fullerenes), supramolecules (nanotubes, peapods, polymers, biopolymers (DNA, protein and their complexes) and semiconductor nanoparticles (nano-Si, SiOx, Si/SiGe dots, metal nanowires). This book presents exciting new developments of the early 21st century. Significant progress has been made in nanotechnology of building blocks for integrated nanosystems, single and assembled molecules, nanoparticles characterisation, and multifunctional applications of nanosystems. The realisation and the application of novel multifunctional nanosystems in electronics, optics, biomedicine (nano-bioelectronic devices based on DNA and proteins, silicon nanocrystal memory devices, monolithically integrated silicon photonics, nanocapsules, biosensor nanosystems) are described by well known experts. This multi-disciplinary, scientific display of cutting-edge research across the entire spectrum of nanoscience and nanotechnology of inorganic, and organic systems, as well as systems for electronics photonics, and spintronics demonstrates that researching nanocarbon, nanosilicon, biomolecular integrated nanosystems, and developing their new applications, is a complex and exiting topic that will continue to attract scientists and engineers for many years to come.

Description: This is a woman's story. Jean Prehm was an 18-year-old college freshman when she fell madly in love with and married Obie Koprivica, a charismatic dreamer. His accidential death, in the midst of his dream project, found her with $200,000 in debts to relatives and friends. Unless the Bayou Belle, an authentic riverboat paddlewheeler, opened as a restauant, he would be a charlatan, not a dreamer. They had a son. She found within her faith, the survivor skills to carry on, open, and spend a year as Bayou Belle hostess and manager to realize Obie's dream.

Published in Canada to tremendous acclaim, this richly imagined comic fable takes Arabella Slominski Boot on an odyssey to Lafayette, Louisiana in search of herself. Arabella is married to Roman Boot, a man who wears Listermint as cologne and thinks foreplay is a golf term. After catching him in flagrante delicto with her best friend on her fourtieth brithday, Arabella packs her car and heads south to join Melba, a woman who ranks high on the list of literature's most unbearable mothers. Arabella struggles to find independence surrounded by eccentrics-a Harley-Davidson riding palm reader, a sexy seventy-year old jazz musician, a gun-toting hitchhiker, and a karate instructor stalker, just to name a few-in this endearing coming-of-middle-age novel.

This is a hilarious read. I laughed out loud from beginning to end. Joanna Goodman is witty and sharp, and Arabella is a triumphant heroine. Her characters are vivid and memorable, and I'd pass this book on to just about anyone.
