Experimental Economics: Financial Markets, Auctions, and Decision Making
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792376412 |
Book Description
Experimental Economics: Financial Markets, Auctions, And Decision Making is based on research presented at the 20 th Arne Ryde Symposium on Experimental Economics, held on November 9-11 at Lund University. The volume is divided into two parts.
In Part I, interviews with prominent researchers in the field, all invited speakers at the Symposium, are presented. Those interviewed are Peter Bohm, Catherine Eckel, Werner Güth, John Hey, Daniel Kahneman, Alvin Roth, Vernon Smith, and Martin Weber. The interviews address important questions about basic experimental methods and the interpretation of results. In addition, these researchers answer questions relating to their specific fields and to their contributions at the Symposium. They are also asked to single out the most important findings in the field.
Part II contains selected contributions from the conference. Topics covered include attitudes towards risk and inequality; pitfalls in experimental economics; analysis of trading-period duration; robustness in learning; video experiments on decision making and fairness; sequential prisoners' dilemmas; and collusion in auctions.

Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history, wrote the modern classic A Brief History of Time to help nonscientists understand the questions being asked by scientists today: Where did the universe come from? How and why did it begin? Will it come to an end, and if so, how? Hawking attempts to reveal these questions (and where we're looking for answers) using a minimum of technical jargon. Among the topics gracefully covered are gravity, black holes, the Big Bang, the nature of time, and physicists' search for a grand unifying theory. This is deep science; these concepts are so vast (or so tiny) as to cause vertigo while reading, and one can't help but marvel at Hawking's ability to synthesize this difficult subject for people not used to thinking about things like alternate dimensions. The journey is certainly worth taking, for, as Hawking says, the reward of understanding the universe may be a glimpse of "the mind of God." --Therese LittletonBook Description
In the years since its publication in 1988, Stephen Hawking's A Brief History Of Time has established itself as a landmark volume in scientific writing. It has become an international publishing phenomenon, translated into forty languages and selling over nine million copies. The book was on the cutting edge of what was then known about the nature of the universe, but since that time there have been extraordinary advances in the technology of macrocosmic worlds. These observations have confirmed many of Professor Hawkin's theoretical predictions in the first edition of his book, including the recent discoveries of the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite (COBE), which probed back in time to within 300,000 years of the fabric of space-time that he had projected.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
In this accessible, student-friendly text, astronomy is treated as a fundamental human endeavor rather than an enterprise reserved for professionals. The authors engage students' curiosity through cutting-edge material that focuses on the themes of human achievement, physics in the universe, continuity of matter, the dynamic systems that sustain life, and astronomy and physics as foundations for our world view.Throughout, the emphasis is on important ideas, with relevant details, techniques, and formulas presented after concepts. A Time Out to Think feature, which encourages students to check their understanding as they read, is just one of many pedagogical aids that reinforce learning. Text discussions are complemented by a distinctive art program, with figures not seen before in astronomy texts. A rich Web site includes student and instructor resources and coverage of current events.

I have read this book cover-to-cover, and although it is intended as a text book, it reads like many of the very popular science books I have read. If you enjoyed reading Sagan's "Cosmos", Gribbin's "In Search of the Big Bang", Feynman's "The Character of Physical Law", Lederman's "The God Particle" or Hawking's "A Brief History of Time", you will enjoy this very well-conceived and well-written book.
"The Cosmic Perspective" is very comprehensive. Besides covering the fundamental concepts of astronomy (such as light as the cosmic messenger; universal motion; celestial timekeeping; and telescopes), this book details how stars are born, evolve and die; the fundamentals of relativity; how the galaxies were formed, as well as how our solar system was formed; how vast space really is; how we know the distances to various objects in our universe; and how we know what happened at the early moments of the Big Bang. Since this book is new (published in 1999), it contains the latest facts and the latest thinking of modern astronomy. This book captured my interest and my enthusiasm the moment I began reading it.

Physical and Non-Physical Methods of Solving Crystal Structures
Michael M. Woolfson , and Fan Hai-Fu Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521019389 |
Book Description
Michael Woolfson and Fan Hai-fu describe all the available methods of solving crystal structure and how they are used. In addition to traditional means such as the use of the Patterson function and isomorphous replacement, and the direct methods, the authors include techniques that use anomalous scattering and observations from multiple-beam scattering. The fundamental physics and mathematical analyses are fully explained. Practical aspects of applying the methods are also emphasized.

Physics of Photorefraction in Polymers (Advances in Nonlinear Optics)
Dave West , and D.J. Binks Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415310733 |
Book Description
This volume describes the current understanding of the physical processes that combine to produce a photorefractive effect in key, representative composite materials. It describes how a straightforward physical model can be devised to describe the static and dynamic properties of photorefractive polymers. Physics of Photorefraction in Polymers summarizes the simple singe-trap model of photorefraction as applied to polymers with high diffraction efficiency. The authors explain how this model can accurately predict photorefractive polymer behavior so that researchers can focus more on the applications of these materials, rather than their characterization. They emphasize how the patterning of an electric field within a dielectric polymer and its physical processes lead to observable properties of the polymers and applications, such as holographic archiving, optical information processing, and optical machine vision. Specific topics covered include the charge photogeneration process, the dispersion in charge transportation, charge compensation and trapping, molecular diffusion, organic composite structure and nonlinear optical wave coupling developed from a physical perspective, and the electro-optical response that creates a phase hologram from the pattern in the electric field. Physics of Photorefraction in Polymers provides a detailed treatment of the best methods for observing photorefractive properties in polymers and explores applications that potentially supercede the capabilities of photorefractive crystals.
