Telling stories is a powerful way to make a point, especially when the stories are compelling, well-constructed, and poignant. This book captures thought-provoking stories contributed by trainers, nationally known speakers, consultants, business leaders, educators, and professional storytellers that help make challenging ideas and abstract concepts stick.

The stories are organized around major organizational development and training themes, such as leadership, diversity, teamwork, performance and coaching, and customer service. Accompanying each story are tips, debriefing questions, key points, and a follow-up activity to maximize its impact and learning potential.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2003-11-27

What a great resource. The stories recited in the book are poignant, humorous, and best of all, real. As a director of administrative support services I'm always looking for creative ways to get a point across. Stories work; these stories and the follow-up activities and presentation tips work.

My organization faces two challenges on a daily basis. First, what is the most efficient and effective way to collect, organize, manage and disseminate mountains of information? Second, how do we continue to streamline and simplify our administrative processes to provide more value-added service to our constituents?

The resources Lori and Mary provide through this text have enabled me to communicate more effectively with my staff during our planning and design sessions. The moral of these stories help us keep focused on the expectations and perceptions of our constituent base.

It's a book to be kept on your desk and referred to many times.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Valuable Resource!.......2003-10-01

Storytelling has been used to convey history and lessons for centuries. Before newspapers came on the scene, story tellers would travel from village to village telling stories to share the news of what was happening in other communities and the world at large...at least as large as it was back then. One could argue that storytelling has become almost a lost art as our communication mode has shifted more to content, facts, polices and procedures. In the corporate world, leaders and managers-and training professionals-have attempted to communicate without really reaching people "inside," where messages can resonate with a mental or emotional picture. It's that inner connection that has the potential of changing behavior and making a difference. To make that connection, communicators need to engage people's minds and hearts to help them "get" the message.

So here's a book on the stories trainers tell. Big book, thick. Whew! That's a lot of fluffy, touchy-feely soft stuff! That first impression will disintegrate as you open this wonderful resource. Sure, there's a treasure chest of stories, mostly from experienced trainers and professional speakers who use them regularly to build the effectiveness of their work. If this book were merely a collection of all those stories, it would be a helpful reference...sort of a Chicken Soup for the Trainer's Bookshelf. Fortunately, the authors have a deeper understanding of what communicators need, so they created an incredible tool kit for trainers, speakers, executives, managers, coaches, parents-the list goes on.

Each of the stories is presented with tips on how to use it, questions to enrich the telling, key point options, and follow-up activities. The stories-short, not long-are set apart in the text by the use of helpful shading. So, now we have more value than just a catalog of stories. But, wait! There's more. The book includes an explanation of different kinds of stories, when and how they can be used, with a cross-reference to the 55 stories. Want even more value? The stories are gathered into chapters that organize the resources for easier access: Appreciating Differences, Communications and Feedback, Customer Service, Influence and Motivation, Leadership, Living Our Values, Performance and Coaching, Problem Solving, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Training Fundamentals.

Are you sensing why I'm enthusiastic about this book? We're not done! I've only told you about what's in the back of the book! "Stories Trainers Tell" begins with an invaluable section on the why and how of using stories to enhance and enrich communication. Page after page of tips and insight educates and inspires the reader, deepening understanding to raise the level of professionalism and effectiveness in communication.

The CD-ROM? Pop this tool into your computer and enjoy an MP3 format delivery of audio dramatizations of the stories in the book. Readers can now learn as listeners also, and most of the recordings are authorized for replay to audiences. Playing a recording of someone else telling a story, then facilitating the interpretation and application of what was heard offers a new dimension to the richness of communication, thought stimulation, and movement to action.

Then there's the reading list and the index. So much! You'll be captivated with a cover-to-cover read, entranced by the stories yourself. This book will sit prominently on your shelf as a primary resource for years to come. I half-apologize for the long review, but this book deserves the accolades.

5 out of 5 stars Replacing my tired, old yarns with powerful, new parables.......2003-09-04

I find that I hear myself telling the same stories over and over again to colleagues when trying to make a point. On the one hand, this is good for sending a consistent message. On the other hand, I get tired of hearing the same thing, and need to make my points in new ways.

As the global marketing research manager for Invista (the world's largest fibers company with consumer and b2b brands such as Lycra(r) and Stainmaster(r)), I need to convert data to meaning that helps our leadership to make decisions. That is what the stories in Stories Trainers Tell do for me. When our managers understand the opportunities that stories point out in the research, they are better able to act with confidence and communicate with clarity.

While I contributed to the book, I also use what it offers to make me a better communicator. I can communicate the meaning I see in data more effectively when I have a story to help me out.

I recommend that you check out the book for yourself to learn how you can upgrade your thinking and practice no matter what role you are in.

I am a Director of Training for a fortune 500 company. Quarterly, I look for new resources that my 40 designers and trainers can use when developing and delivering material to our employees and agents. This book was the gem I've been looking for. Story telling is the most powerful thing a trainer can give their students - because the stories last in the mind forever when the technical details disappear. This book details the how, the what, the when, the where, and the why. Recently I bought a copy for each one of my staff - and the incredible results are already coming in!!! Thanks for my best new resource of the year!

    5 out of 5 stars Stories: A Powerful Tool.......2003-06-26

To be successful as a project management consultant, it is important to be able to influence people to move in the direction in which they need to go (not always the direction in which they would like to go). The thing about using stories to influence is that people love stories and will listen even if they are resisting other management methods. This book has wonderful, rich content and is very easy to use. The commitment of the authors to help readers succeed is demonstrated by the sayitwithastory web site and newsletter. I am very pleased this terrific resource is available. [By the way, these stories work on family members also!]

            Book Description

This is the first book designed to assist behavioral scientists in the preparation of scholarly or applied research regarding deceptive advertising which will ultimately affect public policy in this area. Because there was an inadequate foundation upon which to build a program of research for this topic, a three-part solution has been devised:
            1) a review of how deception is viewed and regulated
            2) a theory of how consumers process deceptive information
            3) a sensitive and consistent means of measuring deceptiveness.

This text provides detailed discussions regarding the intersection of law and behavioral science and its application to deceptive advertising. In so doing, it offers a solid foundation upon which to base expanded behavioral research into how consumers are deceived by advertising claims, and what cognitive processes are involved in that deception.

                    Book Description

This is an outstanding overview of the history of the Earth from a unique planetary perspective for introductory courses in the earth sciences. The book approaches Earth history as an evolution, encompassing the origin of the cosmos through the inner working of living cells. Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World tells how the Earth has come to its present state, why it differs from its neighboring planets, what life's place is in Earth's history, how humanity affects the processes that make our planet livable, and contemplates human influences in the context of natural changes on Earth. This book brings a fresh perspective to the study of the Earth for students who wish to learn how our planet evolved to its present form.

If you're looking for a book that is a great read and even a better reference book about the geosciences, this is the one. I refer to it often in my scientific education. The references at the end of each chapter are also a great way for people to get further information on each subject, if they need it.

Earth, Evolution of a Habitable World by Jonathan I. Lunine

                    Review by Philip Eklund

Dr. Lunine is a Professor of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona, and a NASA advisor. His new book describes Earth's evolution in a fresh perspective, in relation to its sister planets, particularly Mars and Venus. This 319 page textbook covers Earth's origin, the development of its atmosphere and oceans, the variations of its orbit and climate, and at what point we are enmeshed in its long and lively history. The reader can see how we can be unwittingly in the teeth of an ice age and why the number of species has crescendoed now, in our time.

The vast territory that Lunine succinctly covers is all that anyone with a bit of gumption needs to become an authority on the state of our planet. Guideposts to this territory include the sciences of measurement (basically, math, the metric system, and dating methods), and of physics as applied to geology and biology (and some chemistry). Unfortunately Lunine sometimes lapses into off-topic diversions of astronomy (Doppler shifts, lunar phases, Stonehenge, eclipses, and aging planets by the density of their craters). Also, there is no glossary, but the index is adequate. (A few undefined jargons, like "cratonization", sneak in.)

The book is profusely illustrated by Jonathan's wife, Cynthia. There is a color section, mostly of refugees of some astronomy book showing various wonders of the universe. But one color map of the Southwest occupied my attention for a long time. It compares vegetation regimes during the Pleistocene and the Present, the ancient record being derived from pollen counts meticulously gleaned from old packrat middens. I amused myself by examining these data to see whether elephants could be reintroduced into Arizona. Another color figure shows fantastic computer sequences on how the moon must have been formed by an impact between Earth and a Mars-sized billiard ball.

The description of the origin of life is a gem. Lunine's compelling prose springs out as lively as the quasi-stable whirlpools of life he describes (basically an autocatalysis model describing a mode of life existing before reproduction). An alternative model depicting an RNA origin of life is provided mainly for comic relief. Although the role of biology in forming Earth's almost explosive atmosphere covers several subsequent chapters, life is depicted as along for the ride, and the Gaia "biofeedback" theory is dismissed in a sentence.

Unfortunately, the origin of sentience, an event indisputably more profound than the origin of life, is not mentioned. However, the fossil evolution rise of humanity, particularly the Neanderthals, is wonderfully covered. Lunine mentions the "blitzkrieg" theory of his neighbor, Dr. Paul Martin, who postulates the extinction of American megafauna, such as the great elephants and saber-tooths, as being the result of the invasion of "native" Americans with spears. A nice contrast to the increase in American bio-diversity that accompanied the post-Columbian invasion of technologically advanced humans.

Lunine was identified by Time magazine as one of its 1994 "50 for the Future" list of emerging American leaders. Lunine himself would prefer the term "policy-maker" to leader, in the sense of presenting knowledge that self-led individuals can organize into principles of purposeful and long range action. The power of a comprehensive book such as this is that current issues such as global warming can be put in the perspective of past "atmosphere crises" of Earth, such as the super-high greenhouse prevailing at the end of the dinosaur era.

The penultimate chapter, titled "Limited Resources" fails this potential, being anecdotal without the factual rigor of the preceding chapters. (I was told that this chapter was written at the last minute at the request of the publisher.) Lunine starts by treating limited resources and overpopulation as arbitrary assertions, in defiance of his tradition of listing the assumptions of every dating method or limitations of climate modeling.

On the plus side, Lunine does take a rational stand against the Luddites. But where are the charts on air pollution, famine frequencies, human fertility, wetland or forest land acreage, etc. over time? The charts that do appear, on projections of population, energy use, kilos of grain per person, and "undiscovered" oil, have none of the error bars, validation, or context of previous chapters. Bemoaning the tiny amount of land urbanized each year to support farmers moving to the cities as a result of a world-wide food glut is an example of the surreal non-sequitor grab-bag of alarmist insinuations of which fill this chapter.

Particularly nasty is the bromide that less industrialized nations need a "reasonable" standard of living, with the implication that the U.S., (which creates most of the resources that feed and run the world), somehow deprives them of this even as the U.S. demonstrates the technological and political blueprints on how to achieve abundance. Since humans are too greedy or stupid to be allowed the freedom to despoil their own nest, only coercive regulation, or supra-governmental "cooperation" is required to tell their citizenry what is in their own best interests at gun-point. The nadir of these politics is an inexcusable sanction of coercive sterilization in China.

Other than the coverage of our most recent millennium, Lunine has written a tightly integrated and ambitious book. Particularly evocative is the imagery of the continents, floating and jostled into each other like froth on the churning oceanic plates of the Earth, teeming with a surprisingly robust and assertive biological component, laughing yet seesawing through cosmic disasters, extinctions, and self-induced crises of a scale that reduces the palimpsest of human intervention to ripples from a plunked stone.

This beautiful and vigorous accomplishment surmounts what has heretofore been a dry subject, and it literally groundbreaks the placement of our planet and ourselves in the objective context of existence and history.

                    Book Description

The aim of this book is to help people performing routine operations in Organic Synthesis in a laboratory. This book, the first one in a series, focuses on the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. Probably, this is the most important routine operation in Organic Synthesis.

This book (as well as the whole collection "Basic Reactions") is not
well-suited for students of Organic Chemistry. Rather, it is a
practical guide for organic chemists working at the bench, because
besides theoretical sections, it contains plenty of practically
                    important information:
                    - A lot of hints on optimization (different conditions and additives,
what can inhibit and what can accelerate reaction, buffering etc.).
                    - Compatibility of different conditions with functional groups and
                    protecting groups.
                    - Survey of observed side reactions and solutions how to avoid or mitigate them.
                    - Oxidation selectivity between 1°, 2° and allylic (benzylic) alcohols.
                    - Different types of work up: all advantages and disadvantages (how to
avoid emulsions, how to purify easier, sensitivity of groups etc.)

I have found this book very useful in my daily work in total synthesis
and I am looking forward for next volumes of this collection.

NB: Another book from this collection which deserves attention is:
"Oxidation of Primary Alcohols to Carboxylic Acids" by the same
                    authors.

Dont agree that the findings based on the scopes trial as mentioned below are not relevant. Peter Jennings in Century writes how the scopes trial brought the "truth" and yet we learn every bit of evidence made to present this "truth" was indeed not true... how more relevant this that. It was a very cool thing to discover the things I was taught like the Pilt down man or other findings now known to be frauds that evolution is based on was indeed relevant esp. after reading Darwin and Darwin himself saying if no interim fossils are ever found then his whole theory is bust... yet how irrelevant evolutionists feel that is... talk about blind faith. If you are a factual person who wants to see what the whole trial is about get this book its good for your kids and anyone watching current Peter Jennings type "truth" its good to find out what the truth really was..beware it might shake your precious evolutionary foundations! Best thing that ever happened to me Id say!

4 out of 5 stars A look at the Scopes Trial from the creationist perspective.......2005-05-08

The position of the small volume "Scopes: Creation on Trial" is that the "fact" surrounding the trial of John T. Scopes in Dayton, Tennessee in the summer of 1925 in the celebrated "Monkey" Trial has been skewed into evolutionary propaganda. The trial is largely considered to connote a moment in history when "science triumphed over religion." The main contention here is that those who know what really happened in the Tennessee case tried by Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan "know that the real issues have been altered by the media." Therefore, the book purports to present "the true, largely-untold story of an historically memorable battle between creation and evolution," with Darwin's theory coming out on the short end of the argumentative stick.

Certainly the "duel in the shade" when Darrow cross-examined Bryan on the front lawn of the Rhea County Courthouse has become what everybody knows about the Scopes Trial. The legal outcome of the case, in which Scopes was convicted of violating the Butler Act but the verdict was overturned on a technicality by the Tennessee State Supreme Court, has been largely forgotten. Almost from the start the widespread assumption has been that Darrow ridiculed Bryan, the Butler Act, and the fundamentalist attack on evolution. However, even with Bryan dying five days after the end of the trial, the anti-evolution movement succeeded in passing laws banning the teaching of evolution in the states of Mississippi and Arkansas.

Chapter 1, "Their Stage Drew All the World: A New Look at the Scopes Evolution Trial," by R.M. Cornelius, then a history professor at Bryan College in Dayton, is revised and reprinted from a 1981 "Tennessee Historical Quarterly" essay. Cornelius characterizes the trial as a drama, its plot conceived in the offices of the A.C.L.U. and its script written in a Dayton drug store, that turned into a "tour de farce." The emphasis is on the complex questions that the trial involved that were obscured by the ballyhoo. However, a major part of the essay looks at what happened to and in Dayton in the trial's aftermath. If there is a thesis to the political position under girding the history here it would be a quote from a Bryan letter where the Great Commoner wrote, "The collective right is bound to protect itself from misrepresentation and is just as sacred as the individual's right to think for himself as an individual."

Chapter 2, "Mr. Bryan on Evolution," is an article first published in August 25 written by Bryan shortly before his death. While containing many of the same ideas found in the speech Bryan was not able to deliver as a closing argument at the Scopes Trial, the article adopts a less oratorical tone. An Editor's Addendum updates some of the points and asserts that both the article and Bryan's undelivered speech, constitute a strong case against evolution even today.

Chapter 3, "The Dayton Deception" by John D. Morris, reconsiders the Scopes Trial within the larger framework of "the long war against God." Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research, has a doctorate in geological engineering. Morris is well aware that although Scopes was convicted, the anti-creationists (an interesting rhetorical label to be sure) won a major victory. Christians were depicted during the trial as being "ignorant, foolish anti-intellectuals" and divine creation, along with Christianity to a large degree, were "ridiculed, ignored, or legislated out of the public arena." The primary focus here is not so much the scientific evidences for creation but an argument that the "biggest victory for evolution was built on false leads, and things have improved little since." Morris makes the case that for the five key points of evidence in support of evolution in 1925 "one was a hoax, one an ape, two (at least) perfectly human, and one a pig."

Chapter 4, "The Effect of the Evolution 'Victory,'" also by Morris, shifts from science to religion to talk about the creation/evolution controversy in scriptural terms (e.g., Morris quotes John 3:12 and denotes "heavenly things" as being about creation).

Consequently, we have a concise look at the Scope trial that makes a nice case for how Bryan was trying to present a reasonable position on the witness stand and actually avoided several of Darrow's traps, Bryan's essential position on evolution in 1925, a rebuttal to the scientific evidence for evolution in general but much more specifically to what was known in 1925, and a earnest plea for Christians to believe the divine message. The fact that Cornelius and Morris are providing a slightly different perspective than what has been found on writings about the Scopes trial from Ray Ginger and L. Sprague de Camp to Edward J. Larson is what makes it worth reading for those interesting in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial and its potent legacy. Scopes and Darrow have found many voices to continue their side of the debate. Cornelius and Morris represent a couple of voices on Bryan's side.

                      3 out of 5 stars A Downhill Slide.......2002-04-21

In the beginning chapter, it does an fine job describing the Scopes Trial and provides good facts and accounts of what happened.

The second chapter also isn't bad, but pertains to post-trial occurrences (Brady, mainly).

After the second chapter, the book just slips into a void. It starts discussing 'evolutionary finds' that were present at the time of the Scopes trial. It discounts each of these finds, and although the information was interesting to read, it was off-subject and highly critical of evolutionists. The last chapter, very short, was just a few pages packed with biblical phrases which let the authors' disposition towards creationism shine through.

Overall, it is not horribly bad or horribly good. The portion of The Great Trials: The Watershed Decasde in America's Courtrooms and the book Summer For The Gods were both very good accounts of the trial (Summer... was more in-depth [expected since that was the book's only topic :P)

                      1 out of 5 stars Very slanted.......2001-06-25

I would recommend the much more evenhanded account by John Larson in the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Summer for the Gods." Morris, as ever, twists the facts around to make his case, but it doesn't hold together.

4 out of 5 stars Short and informative tract book on the Scopes' trial.......2000-09-26

This informative book is on the landmark court case in July 1925 that pitted the evolutionist/materialist worldview against Christianity/creationists worldview. This trial is often referenced and spoken of by evolutionists. This trial has been skewed into evolutionist propaganda and dogma... This book presents the untainted story of what really happened and the relevance of it all without the evolutionist distortions. The significance of this trial is obvious, as it so the tone for the future of American education, which has gradually been taken over by the secular faith, humanism. The Supreme Court has ruled humanism to be a religion, yet despite this fact humanism is the de facto worldview in public education. Is this what the founders meant by not establishing a state religion/denomination in the First Amendment? Hmmmm... Presently, the humanist perspective transcends ever discipline taught in the schools, and it maintains a strong grasp of nearly every subject, whether its history, science, sociology or yes even theology. Lets solve this so called church-and-state conflict with a separation of education-and-state. It is clear education amounts to instruction (or indoctrination in the case of humanism which tolerates no dissent) slanted towards one worldview.

                            Book Description

The focus of this conference was the utilization of DNA as a tool in molecular manipulation on solid substrates. Envisioned already decades ago, tremendous progress was made in recent years that is evident in the broad application of these approaches not only by a few specialized groups, but on a wider scale. DNA could potentially provide highly specific but also nearly unlimited variations of coupling schemes for molecular structures with typical technical elements, for example, on the surface of a chip. DNA nanotechnology as a standard technique next to a variety of other biomolecular and physical approaches promises further progress in the manipulation at the nanometer and single-molecule scale. Topics included in this volume are: immobilization, metallization, electrical field and conductivity, as well as microscopic characterization.

                              Book Description

David was born in Los Angeles. In grammar school he wrote poems and stories, participated in stage shows, sang in the chorus, and played in the orchestra. He served in the United States Air Force for four years. After his honorable discharge, he played and sang with bands, and later on acted and sang in Broadway musicals. Those experiences led him into a pop recording career. He sang and wrote many of his own songs, as well as songs for others. He penned his first novel at age 21, and then began to write for television. When he was offered acting parts, The Screen Actor's Guild told him that they already had a David Russell, and that he would be required to choose another name. He chose Hagen Smith, an old family name on his grandmother's side. David became well-known as Hagen Smith in many shows appearing in Combat, Daniel Boone, Rifleman, The Doris Day Show, Stage 67, The Boston Strangler, and many films. Later in his acting career the studios changed his name again, this time to Brad Stewart for starring roles in Starsky and Hutch, The Legend of Frank Woods, and White Justice. Through all this he continued to write novels and screenplays using his birth name, David Allen Russell.
