4 out of 5 stars Humayun Ali Pakistan.......2007-01-04

Good reading. Beaumont has shown how useful and insightful it can be to approach markets from the viewpoint of financial engineering as well as how to innovatively think about risk and return in an everyday portfolio management context. Well, I found the book to be very well written, concise, logical, and plain smart.

5 out of 5 stars A practical must read.......2004-05-06

Beaumont's greatest strength is not so much in the text (though the writing is solid) as in his creative use of charts and pictures that tell the story as well as (or ever better than) the exposition. Useful for the neophyte and the professional.

4 out of 5 stars The right book at the right time.......2003-11-26

I think that more than ever the financial markets are really interconnected, and especially with credit-driven events. This book ties all the pieces together in a very useful way.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the financial professional.......2003-11-11

Like I suppose most other finance professionals, I had often considered certain assets as best belonging within their own separate universe; stocks are stocks, bonds are bonds, etc., and 'never the twain shall meet'. For the first time that at least I'm aware of, Beaumont has shown how useful and insightful it can be to approach markets from the viewpoint of showing how much they have in common as opposed to how different they are. In doing this he succeeds in both providing a way to think creatively about financial engineering as well as how to innovatively think about risk and return in an everyday portfolio management context. In short, I found the book to be very well written, concise, logical, and plain smart.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, clear, concise overview of training.......1999-08-02

This book is a great addition to my personal library. It was easy to read, yet practical and informative. Weiss provides an overview of training technology and terminology that is easy to follow and incorporate into your own training situations. I would recommend this book as a guide for all levels of trainers, and all types of trainers, computer trainers and others.

5 out of 5 stars Essential handbook for anyone who teaches computer skills.......1997-12-22

Ms. Weiss has incorporated her knowledge of adult learning theory to craft a succinctly written, straightforward manual for trainers. As a physician who teaches very resistant adults new computer skills, I found her case studies amusing, yet realistic. The book reads easily, there are wonderful illustrations and very little computerese. The chapter headings and summaries show a recusive use of the learning theories' application to the books own internal structure. No one should teach computer skills without reading this book. Upon finishing the book, I know it immediately "saved" one class I had prepared from certain ignominy.

        Book Description

Revised and updated, Conversing With The Planets interweaves astronomy, mythology, and anthropology to explore what the universe means to us and what it meant to our ancestors. Aveni also deftly illustrates the influence of our culture and beliefs on the path of scientific discovery, tracing the rise and fall of astronomy as blown by the prevailing winds of religious, philosophical, and political change.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Genius In His Own Way.......2004-02-28

A brilliant book! Aveni draws you deep into history, researching a variety of cultures and their views on the planets and what they meant to the peoples of those ages. He does this not so much in the way of a history lesson, but with a passion for who those people were, and to show that they wern't so dumb or barbaric as they are so often labeled.

Instead of doing what we modern humans do, researching just for the sake of knowledge, finding the laws that govern the universe, and thinking that our way is the only way, Aveni shows these old cultures watching the planets and using them to tie into their natural surroundings.

He then goes on to show the slow changes in human conciousness as we slowly started seeing ourselves not as a part of the natural world, but something alone and seperate from our surroundings, slowly destroying our spiritual connection with the physical world.

Looking at the world we live in and how we relate to it, one can see that the change hasn't been total though. We still base most of our calender systems upon ancient observations, such as our years being based upon our circling the Sun, and our months are still (losely) based on the moon doing the same with our own Earth. Even our days of the week still show the names of celestial objects. Sunday obviously is named after our very own star, while Monday is derived from the moon. Harder to see (at least for english speaking people) is Tuesday, from the Nordic word for Mars, Tiw. Wendsday comes from Woden, another name for Mercury, while Thursday is from Thor, or Jupiter. Friday or Fria, is our Venus, and finally Saturday is much easier to see as Saturn.

The last chapter is more of a call to go back to our roots, at least in the sense of exploring the universe with a wonder and sense of awe that is more than just cold and scientific. Aveni seems to have a strong sense of purpose with his ideas, and this flows beautifully through the pages.

To finish, if you have any inclinations towards astronomy, astrology, or archeology, then this book is a must read for you.

4 out of 5 stars A literate but relatavistic defense of astrology.......2003-09-10

In this articulate work, Aveni tries to show that the way people live has profoundly affected the way they create their understanding of the natural world, particularly the sky. Arguing that knowing the sky has always been important, he cites examples of how several ancient societies perceived the heavens, particularly in Mesoamerica and the Near East. Aveni, an expert on ancient astronomy, warns against believing that any ways other than our own of understanding and explaining nature have no value. In effect, he questions the primacy of the modern scientific method. Aveni seems to agree with those who suggest that there may be many answers, each valid in an appropriately understood framework, to the question of how nature works. Many readers may find this perspective too relativist or New Age. Dare one say politically correct? The book includes black and white illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, Quick, and Fascinating.......2002-06-27

The book is great for one who is looking to learn a little astronomy, ancient history (Mayan, Babylonian, etc.), and ancient polytheistic religion. Furthermore, the book dwells on how the ancient people's customs, religion, and astronomy all tremendously interrelated. Any high school level reader can read, understand, and enjoy the book. However, even a person, who has multiple university degrees, can find this book intriguing.

          Book Description

Carbohydrates are the most abundant natural products, in line with their role as energy stores and structural building blocks in plants and algae. They are versatile enough to serve as encoders of biological information and, last but not least, they are involved in a variety of molecular recognition processes. Research into carbohydrate and glycoconjugate functions in cell-to-cell communication processes has even created a new and rapidly developing field of study: glycobiology.

Thisbe Lindhorst's successful book is now available in its second edition. Going from the basic concepts right up to the most recent results, this didactically written book features numerous practical examples of synthetic and analytical methods. The contents have been thoroughly updated, and a new chapter on mass spectroscopy of carbohydrates has been added.
With its clear and lucid style, this introduction to carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry is essential reading for students and postgraduate scientists in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy and biomedicine.

"a very readable book which presents carbohydrate chemistry and, in later sections, biochemistry as exciting areas to work and study. The author captures a sense of wonder and inspiration from the very elegance of these areas of science and their application in the real worlds of pharmaceutical and medical research."

            Book Description

Carbohydrates are the most widely distributed naturally-occurring organic compounds on Earth. They make up much of our food, clothing and shelter, and are as vital to national economies as they are to our diet. This book is the first broad treatment of carbohydrate chemistry in many years, and presents the structures, reactions, modifications, and properties of carbohydrates. Woven throughout the text are discussions of biological properties of carbohydrates, their industrial applications, and the history of the field of carbohydrate chemistry. Written for students as well as practicing scientists, this text/reference will be of interest to a wide range of disciplines influenced by carbohydrates: biochemistry, chemistry, food and nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, and medicine.

Kevin, a WIRED Magazine editor who spoke, with Stewart Brand, at OSS '94, has produced what I regard as one of the top five books of this decade. A very tough read but worth the effort. I had not understood the entire theory of co-evolution developed by Stewart Brand and represented in the Co-Evolution Quarterly and The Whole Earth until I read this book. Kevin introduces the concept of the "hive mind", addresses how biological systems handle complexity, moves over into industrial ecology and network economics, and concludes with many inspiring reflections on the convergence of biological and technical systems. He was easily a decade if not two ahead of his time.

The Space Mass Theory can give answers to questions scientists still ponder. What really causes gravity and why it does not come in waves? What determines the values for the speed of light (c) and the gravity factor (G)? What is the source for the strong force? How space has mass, but only in one dimension. And how, unlike matter particles, it is proportional to that dimension. How lepton and hadron particles are formed out of space. How photons are an absence of space, a vacuum of mass, which stretch the mass of space transversely. Why electrons separated by great distances can act like opposite hand partners? Want to know where gravity shows its negative polarity? And where are found magnetic monopoles? Then for the answers, read "The Search for the Ultimate Space".

This book was great! From the characters that aren't your average novel characters, to the setting, and WHAT A STORY! Yes, as you can see, I highly reccommend this book. I have gotten bored lately with a lot of the new fiction coming out, but this book really was refreshing!

4 out of 5 stars A book that makes you laugh out loud!.......2003-01-28

The writing is crisp and clean. The author obviously knows his stuff. He takes the whole Tarzan story and goes places it's never been taken before. It's breezy and fast to read, with some really poetic passages. A friend loaned me his copy and I liked it so much I bought two--one for me, one for a gift. I don't want to spoil it for anybody, but the historical stuff is dead on accurate, and is fascinating to boot. I actually learned a thing or two from a funny book. This should be a movie.
