        2 out of 5 stars The most over-rated classic.......2005-07-02

I've never met anyone who was "into" DFT and did not like this book... except me. I think it is the most over-rated book on ab initio theory out there. I liked Szabo and Ostlund and Helgaker et al's books because they were detailed enough that you could not know Hartree-Fock or MP2, but after reading them, you could write a HF or MP2 program. I didn't know DFT before I read this book and I still couldn't write a DFT program after reading it. To me, the text seemed more philisophical than applicable, but considering the limited scope of this book, you would expect it to be more detailed than what it really is.

5 out of 5 stars A classic in the field.......1998-10-13

Density functional theory has been used in solid state physics for many decades. It has recently become popular in quantum chemistry. The authors have made seminal contributions to the field and their insight is distilled into this book. The focus of this book is on understanding the physics and chemistry underlying density functional theory - it does not concern itself with computatioonal details of the methodology or specific applications to different systems. Parr and Yang's book has now become a classic in the field, a must-buy for any student or researcher of density functional theory in chemistry.

            Book Description

This volume records the proceedings of a Forum attended by many leading researchers working in the field of Electron Density, Density Matrix and Density Functional Theory held at the Coseners' House, Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, UK in early summer 2002.
It has long been recognized that "All the necessary information required for the energy and for calculating the properties of molecules is embodied in the first- and second-order density matrices". The wave function contains much more information than is required to yield the energy or other property. But the density matrices must correspond to some physically acceptable wave function. Coleman, one of the distinguished participants in the Forum, has dubbed this "Coulson's challenge". His paper describing recent work on the N-representability problem is included in this volume. McWeeny discusses some unsolved problems in density matrix theory and density functional theory; and Bader discusses the use of the electron density in explaining the structure and properties of atoms and molecules.
Density Functional Theory is widely used in studies of molecular and solid state systems. Yet the theoretical apparatus for this approach remains under active development. Theophilou describes a new formulation of density functional theory. Gross and his coworkers present a time-dependent theory for molecules in strong laser pulses. Nagy considers pair density functional theory, while Ludena and his colleagues examine functional N-representability in density matrix and density functional theory.
The meeting concluded with a Forum, ably chaired by B.T. Sutcliffe, in which the latest research and results were discussed. A record of this Forum is included in this volume.
This book will be of value to researchers and research students in theoretical chemistry and theoretical physics whose work involves the theoretical study of atoms, molecules and the solid state. It will be of interest to quantum chemists and solid state physicists, to materials scientists and applied mathematicians.

                Book Description

Abatement of Pesticide Pollution: Removal of Organochlorine Pesticide from Water Environment unlike conventional Environmental Engineering books, centres on the pesticide pollution in water environment and demonstrates a comprehensive methodology for developing a low cost treatment system for the removal of organo-chlorine pesticides with a specific case study on endosulfan removal. It presents the process of adsorbent selection; its characterization and capacity enhancement and explains various process parameters viz. removal rate constants, equilibrium time, and isotherms in a batch environment. It further elucidates the rate limiting step and removal mechanisms. In simulating the field conditions, the possible interference due to the presence of exogenous parameters like various salts, fertilizers and other pesticides are explained. Desorption and regeneration processes of spent sorbent are explained to optimize the utilization rate. The field application of the system is presented by means of detailed fixed bed studies followed by evaluation of a laboratory scale column in terms of bed-volumes of water treated. Finally it explains the process of eluent management employing various methods. With the demonstration of a complete methodology, this book would help researchers in the area of water treatment systems development for rural applications.

"A spectre is haunting the modern world," writes evolutionary biologist Michael Rose in a sly echo of Karl Marx, "Darwin's spectre, Darwinism." Ancient as scientific theories go, Charles Darwin's 19th-century ideas about speciation, adaptation, and natural selection continue to inform modern science and to shape our understanding of the world; as Rose demonstrates, Darwinism retains its intellectual force today, although it has been put to bad use politically (as, for instance, a justification for racism, the dismantling of welfare, and the imposition of authoritarian social controls). Rose discusses the growth of Darwin's thought through three major issues: the nature of heredity, the operation of natural selection, and the pattern of evolution. Darwin helped solve a vexing puzzle of his day, namely how different species emerge; he also helped explain why, in an apparent lack of natural economy, there should be so many species of animal and plant life to begin with. For all Darwinism's intellectual power, Rose notes, most theories of human nature continue to be resolutely non-Darwinian. Rose's discussion is lucid and accessible to nonspecialists, and it makes for an eminently readable essay in the history of science. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

Extending the human life-span past 120 years. The "green" revolution. Evolution and human psychology. These subjects make today's newspaper headlines. Yet much of the science underlying these topics stems from a book published nearly 140 years ago--Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Far from an antique idea restricted to the nineteenth century, the theory of evolution is one of the most potent concepts in all of modern science.

In Darwin's Spectre, Michael Rose provides the general reader with an introduction to the theory of evolution: its beginning with Darwin, its key concepts, and how it may affect us in the future. First comes a brief biographical sketch of Darwin. Next, Rose gives a primer on the three most important concepts in evolutionary theory--variation, selection, and adaptation. With a firm grasp of these concepts, the reader is ready to look at modern applications of evolutionary theory. Discussing agriculture, Rose shows how even before Darwin farmers and ranchers unknowingly experimented with evolution. Medical research, however, has ignored Darwin's lessons until recently, with potentially grave consequences. Finally, evolution supplies important new vantage points on human nature. If humans weren't created by deities, then our nature may be determined more by evolution than we have understood. Or it may not be. In this question, as in many others, the Darwinian perspective is one of the most important for understanding human affairs in the modern world.

Darwin's Spectre explains how evolutionary biology has been used to support both valuable applied research, particularly in agriculture, and truly frightening objectives, such as Nazi eugenics. Darwin's legacy has been a comfort and a scourge. But it has never been irrelevant.

3 out of 5 stars Solid survey, starts with life of Darwin.......2003-12-02

It is really an introduction to the consequences of Darwinian evolutionary biology in the modern world. But to get there the first 1/3 is a rather nice simple biographical sketch of Darwin and his times. One particularly good accent was on the Platonic essentialism that marked much of the historical thinking about biology up to Darwin's time. As such this part of the book would be a good first read for a high school student on Darwin.

The second half is his desire to convince people that Darwinian thinking is crucial for a good understanding of not just the natural biological world but for greater issues like sociobio to medicine. As such is a good general survey of an extremely polarized subject material without getting bogged down in the debate itself.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Explanations, Interesting Speculations.......2000-09-18

This is an interesting book written for a wide audience. Rose, a distinguished biologist known for his theoretical and experimental work on aging, aims to give a concise overview of Darwinism, a historical background of Darwinism, some insight into the importance of Darwinism for our culture, and some ideas about how Darwinism might help to explain human behavior. He accomplishes all these goals in this relatively brief and well written volume. Though I don't agree with all of Rose's conclusions, this is a good introductory book with a good annotated bibliography.

2 out of 5 stars My Impressions of Darwin's Spectre:...........1999-12-29

I found the first 3rd of the book very helpfull. I estimate that I was able to understand about 80% of what was written.

I found the second 2/3rds of the book (with the exception of the last two chapters) nearly useless, because I estimate that I was only able to understand approximately 20% of what was written.

The last 2 chapters, I understood, but did not learn much from them.

P.S. I am educated, and have well above average intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars Darwinism explained for the general public........1999-04-27

Rose has written a nice, generally nontechnical introduction to Darwinism and its uses (both practical and speculative) for the layman, yet even advanced readers will find some parts of his book provocative.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual account of the overwhelming relevance of Darwinism.......1999-01-07

Michael R. Rose makes an excellent contribution to the understanding of the overwhelming relevance of Darwinism to the Modern World. The first part of the book allows the unfamiliarized reader to grasp the main building of Darwinism, knowledge that is then masterly canalized to present the importance of the field for applied Science (2nd part). Finally, last but not least, comes the best part of the book, which was seriously lacking in the literature, a personnal, Darwinian view of our Society(ies), with its many intrincacies. Throughout the book, and contrary to the normal, regrettable tendency of Academics, the author does not fear neither spiritual style nor to present many times personnal views, which makes the reading most pleasant and enriching, from the start till the end. It is a major contribution to bring to the 'Darwinian side' those that, though intellectually interested, were kept till now apart, due to excessively academic presentations of Darwinism and its contribution to the understanding of the Modern World. It is only regrettable that Rose did not deepen more the third part of the book. More works like this are severely needed.

                      2 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped.......2004-04-20

This could have been a fascinating book. Jets of matter and the stunning, often intricate bubbles of dying stars and other objects really spark the imagination. Unfortunately, this book doesn't do them justice.

The approach is very cerebral, with no sense of wonder whatsoever. For the most part it focuses on the mechanics behind most types of solar winds, jets, and other ejecta without offering good connections to actual objects we've seen (well, at least in pictures and animations). It would have been great to read a rundown on just why they think Eta Carinae or a powerful jet looks the way it does, written with an appropriate sense of fascination. Sadly, all we get is a dry account of various means by which heat, energy, etc. flow.

If your approach to astrophysics is technically focused enough, you may enjoy this book. It did hold my interest for the first 1/3 and avoids lots of heavy math in the main body of text. If you're a casual, or even ardent, laymen fan of cosmology and the like, you'll probably find it boring.

Try Turn Right at Orion for an outstanding example of how to make science captivating. Although woven through with a fictional voyage (similar to what Carl Sagen did with "Cosmos" on TV), it really grabs you.

                        Book Description

The characters, setting and atmosphere of The Bubble Star are both rural (northern Ontario) and urban (Toronto). The novel focuses primarily on women -- three sisters -- and their relationships with each other and with men. We have marriage, we have affairs, we have a bit of sex, including a scene in an upscale bamboo furniture boutique. One of the secondary characters is a gay male. A lesbian couple appears, and one of the women is married to a professor who is having an affair with one of the sisters working in retail.

When asked by Dale Zieroth (editor of Event magazine) what she feared most about the publication of The Bubble Star, Lesley replied, `That people will read it and think it's a sitcom.' When Zieroth asked her what she hoped for the most from this novel, she answered `That people will read it and think it's a sitcom.' Bourne goes on to say that she expects her audience will be anyone who reads The New Yorker, anyone who works in retail (because the novel has central characters who work in retail), or anyone who watches the Shopping Channel.
