ASIN: 0195092767 |
Book Description
This book is a rigorous, unified account of the fundamental principles of the density-functional theory of the electronic structure of matter and its applications to atoms and molecules. Containing a detailed discussion of the chemical potential and its derivatives, it provides an understanding of the concepts of electronegativity, hardness and softness, and chemical reactivity. Both the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham and the Levy-Lieb derivations of the basic theorems are presented, and extensive references to the literature are included. Two introductory chapters and several appendices provide all the background material necessary beyond a knowledge of elementary quantum theory. The book is intended for physicists, chemists, and advanced students in chemistry.Customer Reviews:

Abatement of Pesticide Pollution: Removal of Organochlorine Pesticide from Water Environment
Sudhakar Yedla , and Anil Kumar Dikshit Manufacturer: Alpha Science International, Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 8173195935 |
Book Description
Abatement of Pesticide Pollution: Removal of Organochlorine Pesticide from Water Environment unlike conventional Environmental Engineering books, centres on the pesticide pollution in water environment and demonstrates a comprehensive methodology for developing a low cost treatment system for the removal of organo-chlorine pesticides with a specific case study on endosulfan removal. It presents the process of adsorbent selection; its characterization and capacity enhancement and explains various process parameters viz. removal rate constants, equilibrium time, and isotherms in a batch environment. It further elucidates the rate limiting step and removal mechanisms. In simulating the field conditions, the possible interference due to the presence of exogenous parameters like various salts, fertilizers and other pesticides are explained. Desorption and regeneration processes of spent sorbent are explained to optimize the utilization rate. The field application of the system is presented by means of detailed fixed bed studies followed by evaluation of a laboratory scale column in terms of bed-volumes of water treated. Finally it explains the process of eluent management employing various methods. With the demonstration of a complete methodology, this book would help researchers in the area of water treatment systems development for rural applications.

Darwin's Spectre
Michael R. Rose Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0691050082 |
Amazon.com
"A spectre is haunting the modern world," writes evolutionary biologist Michael Rose in a sly echo of Karl Marx, "Darwin's spectre, Darwinism." Ancient as scientific theories go, Charles Darwin's 19th-century ideas about speciation, adaptation, and natural selection continue to inform modern science and to shape our understanding of the world; as Rose demonstrates, Darwinism retains its intellectual force today, although it has been put to bad use politically (as, for instance, a justification for racism, the dismantling of welfare, and the imposition of authoritarian social controls). Rose discusses the growth of Darwin's thought through three major issues: the nature of heredity, the operation of natural selection, and the pattern of evolution. Darwin helped solve a vexing puzzle of his day, namely how different species emerge; he also helped explain why, in an apparent lack of natural economy, there should be so many species of animal and plant life to begin with. For all Darwinism's intellectual power, Rose notes, most theories of human nature continue to be resolutely non-Darwinian. Rose's discussion is lucid and accessible to nonspecialists, and it makes for an eminently readable essay in the history of science. --Gregory McNameeBook Description
Extending the human life-span past 120 years. The "green" revolution. Evolution and human psychology. These subjects make today's newspaper headlines. Yet much of the science underlying these topics stems from a book published nearly 140 years ago--Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Far from an antique idea restricted to the nineteenth century, the theory of evolution is one of the most potent concepts in all of modern science.
In Darwin's Spectre, Michael Rose provides the general reader with an introduction to the theory of evolution: its beginning with Darwin, its key concepts, and how it may affect us in the future. First comes a brief biographical sketch of Darwin. Next, Rose gives a primer on the three most important concepts in evolutionary theory--variation, selection, and adaptation. With a firm grasp of these concepts, the reader is ready to look at modern applications of evolutionary theory. Discussing agriculture, Rose shows how even before Darwin farmers and ranchers unknowingly experimented with evolution. Medical research, however, has ignored Darwin's lessons until recently, with potentially grave consequences. Finally, evolution supplies important new vantage points on human nature. If humans weren't created by deities, then our nature may be determined more by evolution than we have understood. Or it may not be. In this question, as in many others, the Darwinian perspective is one of the most important for understanding human affairs in the modern world.
Darwin's Spectre explains how evolutionary biology has been used to support both valuable applied research, particularly in agriculture, and truly frightening objectives, such as Nazi eugenics. Darwin's legacy has been a comfort and a scourge. But it has never been irrelevant.

Solid survey, starts with life of Darwin.......2003-12-02
The second half is his desire to convince people that Darwinian thinking is crucial for a good understanding of not just the natural biological world but for greater issues like sociobio to medicine. As such is a good general survey of an extremely polarized subject material without getting bogged down in the debate itself.

My Impressions of Darwin's Spectre:...........1999-12-29
I found the second 2/3rds of the book (with the exception of the last two chapters) nearly useless, because I estimate that I was only able to understand approximately 20% of what was written.
The last 2 chapters, I understood, but did not learn much from them.
P.S. I am educated, and have well above average intelligence.

Not what I'd hoped.......2004-04-20
The approach is very cerebral, with no sense of wonder whatsoever. For the most part it focuses on the mechanics behind most types of solar winds, jets, and other ejecta without offering good connections to actual objects we've seen (well, at least in pictures and animations). It would have been great to read a rundown on just why they think Eta Carinae or a powerful jet looks the way it does, written with an appropriate sense of fascination. Sadly, all we get is a dry account of various means by which heat, energy, etc. flow.
If your approach to astrophysics is technically focused enough, you may enjoy this book. It did hold my interest for the first 1/3 and avoids lots of heavy math in the main body of text. If you're a casual, or even ardent, laymen fan of cosmology and the like, you'll probably find it boring.
Try Turn Right at Orion for an outstanding example of how to make science captivating. Although woven through with a fictional voyage (similar to what Carl Sagen did with "Cosmos" on TV), it really grabs you.

The Bubble Star
Lesley-Anne Bourne Manufacturer: Porcupine's Quill ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0889841993 Release Date: 1998-08-15 |
Book Description
The characters, setting and atmosphere of The Bubble Star are both rural (northern Ontario) and urban (Toronto). The novel focuses primarily on women -- three sisters -- and their relationships with each other and with men. We have marriage, we have affairs, we have a bit of sex, including a scene in an upscale bamboo furniture boutique. One of the secondary characters is a gay male. A lesbian couple appears, and one of the women is married to a professor who is having an affair with one of the sisters working in retail.
When asked by Dale Zieroth (editor of Event magazine) what she feared most about the publication of The Bubble Star, Lesley replied, `That people will read it and think it's a sitcom.' When Zieroth asked her what she hoped for the most from this novel, she answered `That people will read it and think it's a sitcom.' Bourne goes on to say that she expects her audience will be anyone who reads The New Yorker, anyone who works in retail (because the novel has central characters who work in retail), or anyone who watches the Shopping Channel.
