Book Description

Fuzzy Logic is an analytical tool used in the modeling of those phenomena that fall outside the scope of exact sciences. It is used in the analysis of complex and highly nonlinear processes, where mathematical models or standard classic logic cannot define conditions inherent to such processes, e.g. human thinking. Kurt Peray's detailed analysis of the new approaches and techniques for Risk Control and Portfolio Asset Allocation - which uses the principles of Fuzzy Logic - helps you to make decisions as to when to buy, hold or sell. While making independent and educated decisions, you will be able to hedge your portfolio from the volatile forces in the market, and will offset the erosive impact of inflation and taxation. In this electronic age, investors have quick access to important information relevant to the decision process. The guidelines and formulas that serve as foundations to the Fuzzy Logic approach gives you the ability to build customized programs. Investing in Mutual Funds Using Fuzzy Logic is for the individual who wants to invest in financial instruments that will provide a return for growth. With the investment approach he devised, Peray guides the you towards achieving your investment goals.

5 out of 5 stars Good sound advice that works, not just theory.......2002-05-29

I have used his recommended system of "Mutual Fund Investing" for the past two years. This system imposes constraints for portfolio asset allocation based on the investor's risk tolerance before buy/hold or sell decisions are made using his Fuzzy Logic concept. This disciplined method has been extremely valuable to me in these turbulent times when so many conflicting opinions on stock and bond market directions prevailed.

1 out of 5 stars Disapointed in his interpetation of fuzzy logic.......2002-04-13

Maybe this is a book for someone new to mutual funds or to retirement planning - there is a lot of background for those. But if you've had any exposure to technical analysis or expect to see fuzzy logic used, this book is a disapointment. Its not really fuzzy logic - he sets absolute limit thresholds and, depending on their on/off combinations, does a buy/hold/sell. A real fuzzy logic system would have produced a proportional response to varying data. I was expecting a system that might, for example, adjust proportions between the funds available within a company 401k (ideal for a real fuzzy logic approach)- not a conventional all-in/all-out, buy/hold/sell approach like his. His system could have been presented in a small magazine article, not bloated to book size.

5 out of 5 stars A great new approach for investing.......1999-08-10

Peray's technique for investing in mutual funds is easy to understand. I'm a conservative investor and do not need 30 and 50% returns. I also dont want to expose my capital to undue risks. Peray's Fuzzy Logic concept has produced an all-out sell signal for USA equity funds in the first week of June 1999 (DOW JONES Industrials over 11000) and I adjusted my portfolio accordingly. I'm waiting for the Fuzzy Logic signal to get back into the market .

                      Book Description

Dynamic light scattering is a new method for investigating macromolecular systems. The importance of the technique lies in its non-invasive character. It can be employed on extremely small fluid volumes, the instrumentation is relatively inexpensive and allows the rapid determination of
diffusion coefficients as well as providing information on relaxation time distributions for the macromolecular components of complex systems. This volume is directed in part to the philosophy and current practice in dynamic light scattering. Single photon correlation techniques are introduced; a
discussion of noise on photon correlation functions is given and data analysis in dynamic light scattering to polymer structure analysis is presented; and a comprehensive introduction to diffusing wave spectroscopy is given. Theoretical developments relating dynamic light scattering to the
viscoelasticity of polymers in solution and in the bulk are described. A secondary aim of the work is to illustrate the widely varying fields in which the technique finds application. Chapters address multicomponent mixtures, polyelectrolytes, dense polymer systems, gels, rigid rods, micellar
systems and the application of dynamic light scattering to biological systems.

From the author: Light scattering has proved itself an efficient technique to determine particle diameters in heterogeneous dilute dispersions in the micrometer range. Extrusion of polymer blends is expected to give rise to very small particles, typically in the range from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers. A light scattering device developed in our laboratory has been used to study the morphology of polymer blends obtained in a twin-screw extruder. The main advantage of this technique is the immediate response obtained without any surface or interface modification that can occur during the sample preparation by using more conventional techniques like electron microscopy. To show the possible applications of this light scattering device, preliminary tests have been carried out. First, we present a comparison between experimental measurements and theoretical results for dilute systems. Second, we have investigated the effect of shear flow on the droplet deformation. Finally, we have studied the variations of the li ght scattering pattern for a reactive blend.

                          Book Description

Described by the author as a book "about the weird diversity of sexual behavior," A Natural History of Sex explores "how to look at life, how to analyze and speculate about why something is as it is and not otherwise." In a series of engaging essays, Forsyth considers a host of more specific questions, which run the gamut from the obscure and the bizarre to the familiar. Why do roosters crow and waggle their wattles? Why does it benefit the female human to remain inscrutable about her sexual cycle? Who instituted monogamy? Why would a male mite copulate with its mother? Why does the male bedbug drive its "outlandish, formidable penis" into the female's abdomen? Forsyth's highly observational mind ranges over the natural world, revealing the seemingly random patterns and consequences of animal sexual behavior. This classic reference is a must for anyone who has ever wondered just what it is that makes the world go round.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and thoughful - good book.......2006-01-31

This is a great book to have lying around for a quick read. Topics include such cocktail party favorites as sperm competition and internal fertilization, the effectiveness of abortion in animals, progeny without sex, and tons more great stuff. Forsyth writes well and has an obvious passion for his topic. For us biologist types this is the stuff that spiced up our seventh grade conversations - for others to whom these stories are new the book will likely challenge a whole lot of preconceived ideas about animals as well as humans.

                          4 out of 5 stars INteresting reading.......2002-08-30

Lots of VERY interesting facts and pretty good analysis+presentation.
The book is not very comprehensive in dealing with issues - perhaps that is its strength. I have enjoyed reading Dawkins, Gould, Maynard Smith before. This book is only slightly less enjoyable. I will tuck it between 'Red Queen (Matt Ridley)' and 'Promiscuity (Tim Birkhead)' with 'The Mating Mind (Geoffrey Miller)' somewhere nearby in my library.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading for leisure or reports.......2001-08-19

The unsexy side of sex is presented here as natural science writer and biodiversity scientist Adrian Forsyth reveals the weird diversity of sexual behavior in insects, fish, and mammals from whales to rabbits. Even in nature, there is rape, transvestites, orgasm, incest, love 'em and leave 'em types, and males who literally leech onto females. This collection of essays covers everything from attraction to competition to fertilization, highlighting real species that have the ability to change their sex, who compete for mates, and who murder their mates. Each essay begins with some anecdote and includes quirky facts about exploding genitals, testicle size and its relationship to sperm production, species that die in or after the act of mating, and pheromones. The theme that we are all connected governs the collection. Forsyth recommends that we only look at life around us to discover why humans act the way they do. An essay titled Milk and Honey discusses the impact of fat on reproduction, and why specific percentages of body fat in female animals are required for reproduction, just as human females require specific percentages of body fat for menarche, pregnancy, and nursing. An essay on natural abortion in plants leads to a discussion of genocide in cultures around the world. Quotes from leaders in the field such as Darwin and Gould abound, demonstrating the interdependence of the scientific community. The bibliography is divided by chapter into a further reading appendix, and the index is extremely complete. A great supplement to biology or psychology textbooks, students interested in natural history will enjoy browsing the essays, or reading the book as a whole. Especially recommended for students considering going into the field of biology or animal behavior, this is a strong addition for public, high school, and college library collections.

This short but informative paperback is packed with interesting facts. It also gives great insight to many mating behaviors to help beginners learn about what shapes our evolutionary sexual behaviors. The book is not widely available but could also be used as a great learning tool in classrooms.

All's Fair In Divorce And Drug Wars is a comedy, written by Scot Moon, which focuses on the lives of Eddie and Sherrie Strong, a recently divorced couple who, through a twisting turn of events, find themselves sharing the same duplex, with Eddie occupying one half and Sherrie, along with their four kids, occupying the other half. Eddie has lived there a while. Sherrie and their kids have just moved in.

The duplex that Sherrie has just moved in to was previously rented to a drug dealer, who is now incarcerated. A few of Sherrie's children soon learn that the drug dealer has left something inside of the duplex, and they help themselves to it.

Sherrie and her children have no idea what they are getting into, but the drug dealer plans to let them know, and he wants what's his back.
