    Book Description

It has become increasingly evident in recent years that the safe and the efficient operation of the banking system cannot be guaranteed by Government regulation and supervisory review alone, regardless of how conscientious the regulator, or well-intended the regulations. Government regulation needs to be supplemented by market discipline. Market discipline requires the existence of at least some "de-facto at-risk" bank stakeholders, who have an incentive both to monitor the financial performance of the banks and to take action to influence bank management if they find performance unsatisfactory. But the concept of market discipline in banking was dormant for many years in the post-World War II era in almost all countries, as the fear of major economic spillover damage from bank failures led governments and regulators to either not failing insolvent banks officially or protecting most or all stakeholders, if they did place these banks in receivership. Only recently has the concept of market discipline been resurrected in banking. The 12 papers in this volume and eight commentaries on the papers discuss whether the resurrection is worthwhile. They consider the basic role of market discipline, how it may be applied to banking and more broadly to large financial institutions of any type, and the evidence of how well it has worked to date and the promise it may have for the future. The authors and discussants represent a wide array of both countries and affiliations - academic and regulatory. Thus, the papers reflect a wide spectrum of experience and thought.

    Book Description

By the year 2000, white males will represent less than one third of the American workforce. In this universally praised work, Ann Morrison, co-author of Breaking The Glass Ceiling, becomes the first to offer companies practical strategies for moving tomorrow's new leaders -- white women and people of color -- into the executive ranks. Using personal interviews with nearly 200 managers in organizations noted for their model diversity programs, Morrison presents a very definite, step-by-step action plan that will prove invaluable to leaders looking to guide their businesses into the next century.

3 out of 5 stars not the most scintillating text, but full of info.......2001-01-05

This was a required book for a leadership course. To Morrison's credit, it is full of VERY specific advice and a step-by-step plan for companies to set and reach diversity goals. I was kind of surprised that she didn't spend much time on what exactly diversity is and why it is a noble goal besides the fact that we live in a diverse society, hence diversity. Before you know it, you're knee deep in a multitude of case studies and descriptions of how entrenched stereotypes of Hispanics, blacks and Asians can interfere with diversity efforts. I wouldn't exacty call it lively reading, but from a pragmatic standpoint, it does offer companies a good blueprint for how to put in a realistic diversity plan from many angles.

In short, a useful book for managers or leaders in charge of spreading the gospel who need a model for making major changes. By reading about other companies' mistakes, I imagine others will be more fortunate in terms of avoiding these pitfalls.

        Book Description

If we define the term "constitutional" to mean rules, procedures, or substantive laws fundamental to the republic by way of widespread political agreement or consensus, then what is considered constitutional by way of original text and formal amendment is not necessarily qualitatively superior to that which is considered constitutional merely by way of case law and institutional practices held in place by partisan balances of power. One analytical yardstick for assessing the legitimacy of latter constructs is whether the party or parties responsible for them have made sufficiently successful democratic overtures in the process of pursuing their policy agenda and in securing support for it. In "Constitutional Equilibria," John J. Janssen tests this theory of examining the partisan policy agendas in place early in the history of the republic and examining how partisan realignments have shaped and re-shaped what has amounted to constitutional policy.

            Book Description

Target Earth Target Earth is the continuing saga and greatly anticipated sequel of the award winning book, Earth is Ours, "Best" Fantasy/SciFi 2005 from the prestigious San Diego Book Awards Association. The beloved characters developed in the original story evolve and begin an exciting new adventure as they defy monstrous, invading aliens dedicated to the total destruction of the Human Race. Amy is a self-aware female computer whose only connection to the outside world is through a telepathic link. Levi was a dying elderly Indian man who is rejuvenated through this telepathic connection with Amy. It is a story of this forced symbiotic relationship dictated by mutual needs for their survival in a world stripped of technology. Although they have separate and individual minds, they must co-exist in Levi's augmented body, sharing differing emotions and motivations, while simultaneously battling the enemy. Female brains and male brawn must unite as one in love and power to create a new entity to lead the fight against the aliens. They are aided in this war by human armies and rescued alien slaves, but they are still vastly outnumbered in this conflict. These affable aliens will touch your heart with their loyalty and action, while the enemy will rouse your rage and fear. This is truly a Good versus Evil tale, but does good always win? The male versus female conflict of minds, emotions and motivations remain a large portion of the story as it unfolds from both viewpoints. The struggle continues against formidable invaders led by an awe inspiring supreme leader. In this fast paced and compelling adventure, battles wage across the California and Arizona deserts. These unique characters, and the riveting story, are strong and their saga continues into the third book of this series Earth's Warriors.

            5 out of 5 stars Target Earth.......2007-03-27

After reading the first volume of this story, "Earth Is Ours," I couldn't wait for this second part. The characters are well developed, the story engrossing, I couldn't put it down! and its roller coaster ride of emotional turmoil. Its funny and dramatic. Its written so well, that I sometimes even have sympathy for the 'bad guys.' I highly recommend Gary W Babb's literary talents.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2007-02-06

This is a great story that keeps getting better. Now that the first book has established the characters the story really flies.

                  Product Description

Buried waste on the seabed is a major source of pollution. But, very often, waste sites are not known until a serious problem occurs, or are not adequately mapped. Recent examples around Europe include WWI and WWII ammunition dump sites (e.g. Beufort Dyke in the UK), dumped nuclear submarines in the Arctic Seas, clandestine or hidden toxic-waste in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.. Even if properly documented, waste sites evolve with time (dumped material can move with currents and tides, especially on a scale of decades; toxic-material barrels can corrode and leak). This book shows the results of a concerted EU-funded effort to tackle this problem and find innovative ways to identify and map toxic waste sites ona the seabed, whether they have been covered with sediments or not. These results are applicable to any region on the seabed in the entire world.

                              Book Description

Growth Company is the story of a century of industrial drama told by an insider who has been associated with the firm and its top managers since 1953. Written in celebration of the firm's 100th anniversary, it traces the rise of an archetypical growth company from its unlikely beginnings in a dying lumber town in the backwoods of central Michigan. Later a Wall Street favorite, it made many of its early investors wealthy; it has not missed or decreased a dividend since 1911.

Does natural selection act primarily on individual organisms, on groups, on genes, or on whole species? The question of levels of selection - on which biologists and philosophers have long disagreed - is central to evolutionary theory and to the philosophy of biology. Samir Okasha's
comprehensive analysis gives a clear account of the philosophical issues at stake in the current debate.

                                Book Description

Ever since the groundbreaking work of George Williams, W. D. Hamilton, and Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologists have recognized that natural selection generally does not operate for the good of the group, but rather for the good of lower-level units such as the individual, the cell, even the gene. One of the fundamental problems of biology is: what keeps competition between these various levels of natural selection from destroying the common interests to be gained from cooperation? In this volume twelve prominent scientists explore this question, presenting a comprehensive survey of the current theoretical and empirical research in evolutionary biology.

Recent studies show that at many levels of biological organization, mechanisms have evolved to prevent potential conflict in natural selection. Editor Laurent Keller's aim in this book is to bring together leading researchers from all biological disciplines to outline these potential conflicts and discuss how they are resolved. A multi-level approach of this kind allows important insights into the evolution of life, as well as bridging the long-standing conceptual chasm between molecular and organismal biologists. The chapters here follow a rigorous theoretical framework, giving the book an overall synergy that is unique to multi-authored books.

The contributors, in addition to the editor, are H. Charles J. Godfray, Edward Allen Herre, Dawn M. Kitchen, Egbert Giles Leigh, Jr., Catherine M. Lessells, Richard E. Michod, Leonard Nunney, Craig Packer, Andrew Pomiankowski, H. Kern Reeve, John Maynard Smith, and Eörs Szathmáry.

5 out of 5 stars A Panoramic, yet Compelling, View of Multilevel Selection.......2000-07-28

A multicellular organism has specialized structures to destroy mutant cells that wildly multiply; when these structures fail, the organism suffers from possibly lethal tumors. A beehive has workers who police the behavior of other workers to ensure that work gets done and that only queens lay eggs. Without such disciplinarians, the hive would soon fail. Humans have evolved internal behavioral structures that allow us to cooperate in society, and impel us to punish non-cooperators.

All of these are instances of multilevel selection, as discussed in this fine book of essays. Some readers will be startled to find this material instead of the ancient debates over individual vs. group selection and self-interest vs. altruism---the place where the debate over multilevel selection began in the mid-1960's. The contributors are tops in their respective fields, including H. Kerne Reeve, Eors Szathmary, Richard Michod, Andrew Pomiankowski, Craig Packer, John Maynard Smith, and other equally fine biologists. Their uniting in this book shows that the group selection debate is over, at least among the knowledgeable.

I loved this book, and have spent many hours following up on the other writings of the authors, both in book and article form. This book suggests what I have long had a suspicion is the case: all of biology is sociobiology, in the sense that whenever you have organisms consisting of more than one type of cell that cooperate in making a whole, you have social mechanisms involved in mediating among the divergent interests of the individual parts, and structures emerge that more or less successfully resolve the mediation problems. Darwinian selection then operates upon these mediating structures, yet in no way different from, or even in addition to, the way selection operates on individual genes.

In this work, George C. Williams--one of evolutionary biology's most distinguished scholars--examines the mechanisms and meaning of natural selection in evolution. Williams offers his own perspective on modern evolutionary theory, including discussions of the gene as the unit of selection, clade selection and macroevolution, diversity within and among populations, stasis, and other timely and provocative topics. In dealing with the levels-of-selection controversy, he urges a pervasive form of the replicator-vehicle distinction. Natural selection, he argues, takes place in the separate domains of information and matter. Levels-of-selection questions, consequently, require different theoretical devices depending on the domains being discussed. In addressing these topics, Williams presents a synthesis of his three decades of research and creative thought which have contributed greatly to evolutionary biology in this century.

Because the new high-temperature superconductors cannot be grown as large single crystals, interfaces and junctions play an important role in their properties. The chapters in this book, each by leading researchers in the field, examine the state of our understanding of such interfaces. Chapters cover such topics as studies of YCBO films by transmission-electron, scanning-tunneling, and atomic-force microscopy; microstructure, interfacial interactions, and twin boundary structures in YCBO films; grain-boundary Josephson junctions; and overlayer formation.

                                          Book Description

From the author of the acclaimed The Future Homemakers of America comes a funny and moving novel about a high-spirited, unconventional woman whose life is a celebration of passion's triumph over prudence. What hope is there for Poppy Minkel? She has kinky hair and big ears-and an unquenchable lust for fun. Her mother Dora despairs of ever finding her a husband, despite the lure ofthe Minkel family mustard fortune. Social mores, duty, and ear-correcting bandages are the weapons of Dora's husband hunt, but they only serve to torture a girl who has her own ideas about beauty, love, and marriage. Then, her father dies on the Titanic. And as WWI opens up new horizons, Poppy's tendency toward the unconventional finds room to blossom. Without a moment of self-doubt, Poppy reinvents herself in step with the unfolding modern century.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, memorable characters. .......2007-03-22

This book made for an enjoyable read, despite a character that was unusual at best. The American publisher changed the title and cover photo to something our public would "get", as we don't understand irony! "The Great Husband Hunt" has almost nothing to do with the story and the photo is insipid cheesecake. Had I seen the cover first, I'd never have bought the book and was pleasantly surprised at the content. The Unfortunates (British title) is surprising, witty, and an interesting look at the life of the "fortunate" class of the 20th century.

                                          5 out of 5 stars very entertaining.......2006-04-05

I love the way Laurie Graham writes. I really enjoyed her book, The Future Homemakers of America, and thought this would be similar, but the style of writing is different. I recommend both books. They made me wish I had more time to read.

3 out of 5 stars still hunting for a better book.......2006-01-03

I really give this book a 3 1/2. The high parts of this rating I reserve towards the beginning of the book, but as the work progressed I became disappointed with the character of Poppy and the plot.

I initially loved this book. Hearing about Poppy's ackward appearance, her mother's shallow obsession with "fixing" her daughter for the "great husband hunt", and Poppy's rebellious nature made me laugh. I thought this book was going to be all about her mother's pushing for this perfect life and Poppy pushing back with unconventional adventures. That this "great husband hunt" would not have produced any husbands or children, just adventures, affairs, and eccentricities. So I was a little disappointed when Poppy did marry (granted it wasn't to a traditional socialite and it did lead to divorce).

In the beginning, Poppy was very naive but she told it like it was even though her Aunt and mother found her comments and behavior rude. I found her honesty very refreshing.

After WWI, Poppy's character crossed the line from this naive, lovable girl to an arrogant, rude young woman. In fact she didn't even seem human anymore. She seemed to have no connection with anyone, her mom, aunt, sister, husbands, and even her children. I thought she was a terrible mother. I could not get over how nonchalance she was when it came to her children. You would have thought that Poppy's experiences with her own shallow mother would have taught her that a mother's attitude has consequences on the happiness of her children. I heard more praises of love between Poppy and her dog than between Poppy and her children.

And if I had to hear one more time, "I'm a mustard heiress," I think I would have screamed. You would think someone would have taught her not to say that b/c 1) it's rude and 2) someone will take advantage of you.

Basically, I couldn't root for Poppy during the second half of the book and that's when my opinion of the novel fell short of the promising beginning.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Romance?.......2005-03-09

I would like to know where people got the idea that this book is a romance. It is in the general fiction area of any book store I've been to.
The book is a good read and I would recommend it to anyone look for an easy read.

This was an awful book. I could not finish it because the main character was so annoying.
