This book offers great insights into the practicalities of financial mangement, and gives an excellent and detailed description of day-to-day FM. Everyone should have read this, just in case you run into one of those weight thowing around bosses. I hadn't read it when my inccident happened but i called in my Union President, after paying for 4 years worth of dues they better do something. It said to do this in the book, so i was right on it. Regardless of your current employment status, one must read this book. It is excellent guide on what to do to protect one's best interests when it comes to salary negotiation for the new job, or severance negotiation when a job is lost. If you are in the rush and want to just skim the book read the tips at the end of the each chapter and that will have to determine if you need to read all of it or some of it. My advice however would be read the book cover to cover because you could only wish to have Richard Busse is your employment lawyer. If you are 40 or older you definitely want to read this book and better yet, keep it in your library for a refresher reads in the future.

Is Nanotech just more hype? Blue sky research with no practical products in sight?

This book hopes to dispell that by presenting a solid survey of the field. It does require a fairly high technical level in the reader, concentrated in engineering. This may be a good sign. Things are not relegated to pure research. Indeed, several chapters discuss possible biotech and molecular electronics applications. Though you should be warned that these might be harder to build than expressed in the confident tone of some authors.

This is a valuable book, but be aware that the new fascimile edition barely has a cover. The cover cardboard is very thin, and you may need to do something to cover it or purchase a used copy instead.

Archaeologists have become failed ethnographers, forever regretting the demise of the people they would like to talk to. Stephen Shennan provides an ambitious blueprint for a new approach to archaeology, based on the application of the latest neo-Darwinian evolutionary ideas.

What is the history of human populations? How are cultural traditions maintained and changed over time? Why did people destroy their environments in the past and were they ever conservationists? What led to the emergence of marked social inequalities? These are some of the important questions that evolutionary archaeology can answer.

Shennan opens with the study of animal behavior, as acted upon by natural selection, and goes on to demonstrate that the same ideas can be applied to human societies, not just through the genes but also through culture, our second inheritance system. He then looks in detail at population history, methods of subsistence, male-female relations, social evolution, and competition and warfare. Fascinating insights emerge. For example, the unique time-depth of archaeology can be used to show that human populations have expanded and then crashed far more frequently in the past than has hitherto been realized. Similarly, the rise of plough agriculture may well have led to increasing control of women by men.

Ranging from life history theory to game theory, and from the origins of farming to the collapse of societies, the book takes us on a thrilling intellectual journey. 50 b/w illustrations.

Shennan lays the groundwork for an archaeology beyond bones and tools and tells us where it can lead. He specifically addresses both the ability of archaeology to develop theories and its limitations when supporting them.
Of particular interest are his chapters of interpretation, which build on his rather dry theorectical framework. These include a fascinating description of the origin of agriculture and the role of women in early societies.
I found much of the book to be a hard read. Shennan's writing style is often long-winded and full of self-referential vocabulary used in a very precise way. One can perhaps forgive his style as the need to satisfy potential critics in his own academic community. Still, I have a strong preference for clear writing and Shennan does not always offer that.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to acquire a solid high-level understanding of the state of archaeological interpretation or the limits of the science, but be ready to find a quite room and a good reading lamp.

The so-far unanswered question of whether the movements of distance-separated objects are correlated in the way quantum physics requires or whether, according to Einstein, they can influence one another only by mechanical agencies travelling between them at speeds limited to that of light. It is to that still unanswered question that this present compilation of papers is addressed.

The editorial approach is unusual in that in order to break the current conceptual deadlock and to encourage true innovation they have solicited inputs which are multidisciplinary. This open-ended venture is therefore perhaps more in line with what was once called Natural Philosophy than with what is currently known as 'Physics'. This is something of a departure for those who say that Physics no longer has anything to do with Philosophy. For there are physicists who believe that their predecessors have accomplished all the really important conceptual work on interpreting natural phenomena, so that there is no longer any call for radical revision in that direction. This leads to a constricted form of the discipline in which the purpose of all observation and experimentation is seen as simply to collect more and more information and fit it to conceptions which are traditionally 'cut and dried'.

The emphasis is thus on presenting informed and carefully considered descriptions of natural phenomena, economizing as far as possible on interpretations in terms of entities which turn out to be no more than speculative.
